I started woodworking in the mid-60s and have used nothing but oil stones for sharpening. I've tried other methods but the oil stones are the easiest to maintain and use and are significantly cheaper. Your video brought back wonderful memories. Thanks.

Great video David, I really enjoyed the whole process. As a wood carver I have a lot of chisels but never seemed to master the exact art of keeping them sharp. Sometimes the old, straight forward ways are the best and one of the reasons I have discovered your tutorial. I will keep at it as you suggest and live in hope of mastering the craft. Many thanks.

EXACTLY my position... Oil stone, 1 rusty + 1 cheap Chisel to take care of. Cheap 2 sided oil stone was twisted and concave when purchased. Now It's flattened off a granite flat stone lying around... onwards. Subscribed. You've a great energy. I don't sub easily too.

Brilliant, I did this exact same thing just the other day then found your video. I have the same stone my dad used and he died 40 years ago. Still use it. Don't get caught up in all the hype. Okay, a strip of leather from an old belt with some block soap on it will finish the job too.

You have a good process for using only other stones to flatten a stone. I have flattened thousands of stones and the best rule for using only stones is : always use three stones and make sure you always use all three on each other. This is also the rule in metal working. Good video. Thanks, Steve

Nice video David even for an old Woodworker to review a skill or two. One thing I learned years ago was to strop a freshly sharpened chisel either on my belt or my denim jeans. That seems to add just a bit more edge to the chisel. Great job keep up the videos.

I am 50 this year,when i was about 13,i was taught in wo0d work class to sharpen my chisels with the figure of eight motion & to this day i do it & it works a treat for me. Have you ever tried it? i do not see many do this on the other sharpening videos on youtube. Thank you. It also is kind to the stone,meaning you use all of the stone more or less,rather than using 1 part of the stone & creating bevels in the stone.
@RusticDavid5 жыл бұрын
Hi Ginger Thanks for your comment i agree with you figure of eight does everything you say i only covered back and forth to keep things simple in the video maybe i will make another video using better stones and discuss different techniques at a later date Happy Woodworking David

Yes. That. Exactly the video I have been looking for, thank you David! Today I have had the benefit of watching a competent, skilled craftsman demonstrate a fundamental task. I learned that I can shape and straighten one sharpening stone with another. Also, that it is Ok to use sandpaper on tools (to do basic clean up). And I learned about 'shortening the grain'. I guarantee you that half of your audience didn't know that. Thanks again. Ps. Your discomfiture (almost embarrassment!) particularly at the beginning was palpable but nevertheless it was a worthwhile endeavour.

Hi Stephen im delighted that you watched the video so soon and learnt so much its because of your request that i made it thanks for commenting good luck with your sharpening and i will be happy to hear any more suggestions have a great week David

Going down the grit on sandpaper will razor sharpen your chisels too. I sometimes do that for my friends as they do not have the stones,and i have not brought my own with me. I like wet & dry paper works like a charm & cleans like a charm.
@lilcicero775 жыл бұрын
Hi David, you have an uncanny strategic instinct for curriculum - I mean for what skills a beginner needs and in what order, because if someone asked me what basic skill I thought I might need next, I would say quite soon I'll need to try sharpening a chisel, and as you say, there as a bewildering number of arcane videos out there with competing theory, and one just yearns for something simple. By the way the scarf looks great !
@RusticDavid5 жыл бұрын
Hi how are you doing?thanks for the scarf compliment ,so if you have a sharpening stone and a chisel give it a go its not the sharpest method but it gets the work done and you can upgrade slowly without breaking the bank have a great week David

What is the fluid that you put on the stones prior to sharpening. Great video, thanks!
@RusticDavid3 жыл бұрын
Hi Dan its oil I don’t use oil stones anymore i use water stones and diamond plates which also need water The fluid is so the metal particles wash away and don’t clog up the stone

Hello sir. Very useful video. I already subscribed to your awesome channel :^) I have a doubt and i wanted to ask you, when you rehandle a hammer, after you put in the wooden wedge, you put in the metal wedge in an angle or across(vertical)?? Which way is better? Thank you for your help and attention :)
@RusticDavid5 жыл бұрын
Hi Leonardo Nice to see you here again thanks for your question .The “hole” in the hammer head is oval and and larger on the side you need to put the wedge .knock in the wedge across the narrow part of the oval i hope this is clear if not let me know best wishes David

Great video! What oil do you apply to a oil stone anything in particular?
@RusticDavid5 жыл бұрын
Hi ,Thanks for your feedback.A light oil is recommended, I didn’t have any I generally sharpen with diamond plates and Japanese water stones and dont have need for oil so I took engine oil for my car and thinned it with turpentine its not the first time I have done that,I didn’t always have the water stones and made do with what I had including engine oil! If its to thick it’s hard to hone the tool sort of “floats” above the stone thin it until the tool contacts the stone and the metal dust can wash away with the oil.having said all that the video is meant as a starting point with granddads old stones up grade slowly as you can afford it to diamond plates they are amazing!!!
