As a painter a great tip would be to use a mini roller. If something cannot be sprayed the next best thing is to always use a mini roller. Doesn't matter what it is. Could be kitchen cabinets, trim or doors, anything at all. Better quality finish everytime as well as a much more even coat of paint.

Just some helpful tips: 1.Make sure your surface area is clean. Prep is EVERYTHING when painting. 2.Sand down the surface with a 220-400 grit sand paper to promote bonding for the paint. 3. Use a tack clothing to pick up any little particles that might still be around. 4. The little bubbles are called fish eyes and can be caused by multiple things ex:incorrect prep/the way the product is made or the chemical process between the paint and the tubs material. 5. Ventilation saves lives. Do it, wear a mask and don't think twice about it. These paints are strong and not good for your lungs. 6. Most importantly! Have fun and enjoy the process 😊

Great video. We are a professional refinishing company. When using these products, a ducted exhaust fan is recommended. We have tried almost all of the diy kits on the market to see how the hold up and what is needed to remove them. The finish used at the factory on fiberglass tubs and surrounds is a 2 part urethane topcoat, crosslink primer and expoxy primer. We end using $250+ just in materials to refinish a tub. The right product and correct tools are needed for a finish to last and not yellow over time. Refinishing is way less expensive than replacing a tub, but most diy kits will fail and yellow. If a professional refinisher is used, the life span is the same as a new tub at a fraction of the cost of replacement. We see a lot of diy tubs we have to correct and end spending more money in the long run. If you have the money to spend, use a professional on this to save money and also cut down on the risk of breathing toxic chemicals. Most professionals today use low voc materials for refinishing. The product does cost more, but safety is key. Again great video, just read msds sheets on these products. They are harmful. If you are trying to buy 6 months to 1 year on your tub then use the kits.
@evyburkhart33559 ай бұрын
yep, most all of the diy videos that get updated by the channel report that they quickly yellowed and cost way more to correct the problem than if they had just hired a professional to do the job.

I've not refinished a tub/surround before, but I've done cleanup/renewal. Here are a few tips (some of which have been mentioned): - Ventilate the area via the bathroom ceiling fan, box fans, air filtration cleaners. Wear a ventilator mask. - Allow extended time for this project: there are no ways to do this correctly quickly. This should not be done while the unit is inhabited. - Remove the fixtures (stopper, drain shoe, overflow plate, etc.), prior to the job. Tape off the exposed openings. - Fully clean all surfaces that are to be painted. Paint will not fully adhere to unclean surfaces. It may take several hours for solvents to remove stains and gunk. - Sand the surfaces prior to painting. You should use a mechanical sanding tool for this step. - Remove the grit and fine dust with a vacuum and dustless detailing cloths. - You may need to allow a minimum or 16 hours for the steps listed above. - Apply single coats of paint using a small, short-nap smooth rollers. Allow the coats to fully dry (at least two hours for each of three coats). - Do not use the tub for at least 72 hours. Replace or re-install the fixtures. The real takeaway from this is that the "money-saving" aspect of this operation is only derived by allowing plenty of time ...

@@heidih3048 the tub I refinished was in a complete fixer upper and the tub was horrible and cast iron so I started with 60 grit and worked my way down to 120. If your tile is a harder you could do the same but if you have a "softer" tile I'd start with like an 80 and work down. But the easiest would be to just get a pack of mixed grit sandpaper and see how the tile you have reacts to it as you go. You essentially want to just remove the shine from your tile without being able to see any scratches. If that makes sense.:)

I'm a professional bathtub refinisher for the past 10 years. Not here to judge anyone just give you all an advice with rustoleum. This stuff yellows pretty quickly if you use some abrasive cleaners. Just stay with any eco friendly cleaners, dish soap, and the best is actually car wash soap. You should be ok for 2-4 years. Also that bath math if it has cup suctions is a no no, every time you pull it, you forcing the paint to come off. The paint will come off there, the question is when. I will suggest to put something permanent like an antislip stickers. Or even a math, something that stays permanent.

I did this today to my shower. It looks pretty good, one thing I'd note is that it's not really like painting. Both the smell and consistency (as she said, kind of milky) remind me more of staining than painting. Also, had the same issue using a foam roller as she mentioned, it started to fall apart and I had to pick little foam bits out and finish with the brush. Even if it goes on thin and milky it becomes VERY sticky which was what was causing the foam to pull away after a while.

That bubbling is what we call a reaction... The tub has chemicals, oils, soap etc something on it that is causing a chemical reaction with the paint. For your final wipe use alcohol, lacquer thinner or alcohol and wipe in patterns to clean every area. Do this two times. There's alot of steps Rust-Oleum doesn't tell you, there's also a reason professionals charge what they do and that's because it's not that simple, don't get me wrong it looks amazing it's just for the best results you would need to put in more time and research on best methods. Also that mate will pull up your finish

@@mlinecomposites1 acetone does not leave a film. If you are getting residue with acetone it's because either there is a lot of what ever you are cleaning off or the rag you are using is dirty or has dies coming off of it . Take a clean piece of steal or aluminum and a blue paper shop towel and wipe it down. You will not see any residue. This is why they use acetone in hemp oil extraction. All elements in pure acetone evaporate. If you really want to stop the rust from coming back use muriatic acid. It will turn black and then you dry it and paint. I cleaned the tub with multi-purpose solvent, then with limeaway and rinsed thoroughly with water. Dried completely. I used a small sponge roller and a two dollar synthetic brush. Basically just painted the tub and it came out great. So far only one coat, but may add another coat to the bottom even though it looks good. I’ve done this a couple times and a goo investment is in a professional cleaning chemical and liquid sanding product, soap and water just want provided lasting finish, secondly when using a roller do not use any kind of roller with nap, no matter the quality that will lift paint and your tub will feel like 80 grit sandpaper when it drys, I use the very small (3/4 in diameter x6” long) that are almost smooth -0- nap. Brush’s no matter how good you are leave some brush marks, the no nap rollers live the tub smooth as new. The hard work in cleaning, sanding and cleaning again is where your effort pays off. Good luck.

@kgkendrew1 Yes you can roll but the roller head needs to be one that is about 3/4 to 1 inch around and smooth like used for decorative work, not wall painting. Clean very good before sanding with 320 grit wet sand paper. Sanding wet cleans up good and reduces the risk of dust in your job. I used the Rust-o- product the last time and it went on great and self smoothed out nicely. Spend the extra time at the drain area cleaning and sanding and insuring the area is very dry. Good luck.

As a painter a mini roller works wonders on these projects and u can literally just pour little puddles into the bottom of tub and rub it out so to speak push it around don’t roll like u would a wall but a mini rolller is def the way to go and by keeping the product in the tub pouring little puddles and pushing around at the same depth will save the amount of product you use/time and the roller is given lol just a smooth sleeve. Them cheap brushes leave brush strokes and strings from the brush will rip off and stick to the tub. Hope that helps

I’ll be doing this. My Dad had one person refinish an old porcelain tub. That didn’t work, had a company come in and do it. We had to pack up and go to his house to shower every night. Then we had little patches start coming up. Same company came pack and did patch work only versus redoing the entire tub. Same routine, packing up to shower elsewhere. We’ve got more peeling again. Forget it.

The NIOSH N-95 mask is not sufficient for this type of coating. The fumes are extremely noxious and I was surprised that you could even talk or breath right after using it. The video put out by Rust-oleum has a guy painting without a mask also. I think this was irresponsible on their part as the fumes are toxic. I would advice everyone to use tape along the floor and adjoining walls. Site prep is very important and any soap, dirt, or silicone will prevent bonding. Don't mix like you would stir paint, but slowly mix the two parts together without getting air into the mix and make sure you mix it long enough to be totally blended. Wear latex gloves! The product is great but you must be careful.

I must have watched your video a million times for inspiration. Finally got around to painting up my master bathroom last night. Nervous and anxious the whole time but i kept going. It’s 3:16AM and i woke up to go check it out. Looks great, it’s drying up well. I do have one question how much longer before i go back in to caulk the sides in?

Warning!!! N95 will not protect your from organic vapors! ( Which are the chemicals you are smelling) You need a respirator with organic vapor cartridges! N95's are for particulates like dust and such.(oh, and airborne viruses as well.) Please just look it up real quick. Take care, stay safe!❤️

Spray paint gives the thinest coat, a paint/epoxy combo box gives a medium coat, and a thick application brand like Bath Works gives the thickest coat. Also, use a 1/4 inch nap roller, not a foam one. Nap is manuf. suggested, it rolls on great, and doesn't break up like foam. Also, a standard bath-shower combination requires two quarts of Rustoleum paint. The easiest way to prep the tub is to use comet and a soft soap scrubbing pad. Apply thick coats & avoid repainting more than a minute later, or you can wrinkle up the first coat. With Rustoleum, touchups can be done later using Rustolueum tub and tile spray paint ($22). Last, follow the instructions, wait at least an hour before recoating, and use 440 or 800 grit sandpaper to lightly sand specs of dirt that show. Your first quart will cover everything; the second quart will make it look perfect (watch out for light blue areas; lighter coats that bleed thru & need a second coverage).

You had be cracking up when you came back to the camera to talk after the 1st coat & you realized you didn't have your mask on. 🤣🤣 I believe you got a contact high. 😂😂 I have been wanting to do something to my tub to freshen up the bathroom then get a new vanity. I'm so scared I am going to mess up my tub.

@paulnicolas1722 жыл бұрын
Hi and thanks for the video ! I know this is an old post but wondering if you could kindly provide some advice . I live in the uk and I have an acrylic/hard plastic white bath tub and want to change the inside colour to blue . I know about the product you mentioned but it’s not available in the uk and it only comes in white. The surface condition is brand new already and is very smooth but clean . Wondering if you can suggest a paint I could use and if I need a primer or any overcoat to go with it - obviously it has to withstand water and heat without flaking etc You’d think there would be loads of varieties of paints available but doing some research online the only innediate paints I can find that might do the job even though I’m not too sure is either plastikot or rustolium all purpose outdoor paint - and rustolium crystal clear gloss laquer as an overcoat protector perhaps ? Not sure if perhaps hottub paint might do as they tend to be made from fibreglass ? I’d appreciate any info you could provide ? And also as the tub is brand new will I still need to do all the preparation you mentioned other than just a quick clean ? Cheers
@Thesmallerhalf2 жыл бұрын
I think even if it is new you would still need some prep work to sand off the finish before applying the paint. Try searching online for a product that is for bathtubs. I’m not sure if just any old paint would work. The Rustoleum product mixes paint with apoxy. Good luck!

Any brush marks? I just primer my tub now I need to get the paint etc but wondering if I should roll it on or brush it ?

I tried the roller but mine fell apart and left lint. I liked the brush better and didn’t have brush lines.

I used this product last weekend and I would just like to add to the advice already mentioned in this video. Btw, I am also very happy with the finished results. If you don’t have a window or adequate air circulation in your bathroom, a simple N95 mask is not enough for the fumes released by this product. I had to use a heavier duty mask with organic vapour filters on it. It even caused eye irritation so a cheap pair of goggles wouldn’t hurt. I couldn’t wait to finish. Secondly, buy extra foam rollers. I went though 4 for my tub and wall. As mentioned, it is very sticky product and it will cause them to deteriorate. Lastly, if you are a wall as well as a tub, you will likely need two cans to cover two coats.

To clarify, how many kits were required for this bathroom transformation? Did I understand you when you said you purchased 2 for the tiles and 1 more to do the tub? 3 kits in total? I’m trying to judge how many I’ll need.
