Today’s guest is legendary SAS operator Rusty Firmin.
Rusty Firmin served in the British Army for 27 years, most of them at the highest levels of special operations.
Famously known as “the man with no gloves,” Rusty served as the SAS Blue Team lead during the 1980 Iranian Embassy Siege in London that resulted in the rescue of 19 hostages.
Rusty recounts his experiences in the SAS in his books, Go! Go! Go! The SAS. The Iranian Embassy Siege. The True Story. and The Regiment: 15 Years in the SAS. Go! Go! Go! was the inspiration behind the major motion picture, 6 Days, starring Jamie Bell, Mark Strong, and Abbie Cornish.
Following his time in the SAS, Rusty transferred his skills to the private security industry consulting for diamond mines in West Africa, global news organizations, corporations, actors, Olympic teams, and foreign dignitaries.

Yes, it was called Who Dares Wins in England and The Final Option when they released it in America. I caught it on cable television back in 82 or 83, great movie. And I remember the 1980 Iranian Embassy Hostage thing when it happened, I'll never forget watching that guy jump over to another balcony just as that explosive went off, talk about your heart going up in your throat, that was something.

In 1959 a team (they had not established real formal names then) left Merebrook Camp and rescued a "member of society " in London. Shots where fired and 2 people died. This was when the SAS did not write books or do TV shows and bring out daft "SF" branded clothing !! The press never got wind of the event .It might have been the first "SAS" hostage rescue mission on UK soil ever ? There has to be some still alive who "might know a lot more" . The name of the person they "Liberated " has never been mentioned .Only the fact it was central London

Funny how naive you really are Jack. At the time the SAS were unknown. There wasn't the US like recruitment drive as they again disappeared, with no one knowing anything. Years later rumours were there of the Falklands and Northern Ireland. You can't compare UK military directly with the US, certainly not historically with the SAS or SBS.

@@nickjohnson710 there is a huge difference between being involved in a war and training terrorists, which is what the SAS did in Cambodia with the Khmer Rouge. The genocide and atrocities that Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge did were widely know and reported on by then and the SAS still went to train them in guerrilla and non conventional tactics, this is after the Khmer Rouge were defeated by the Vietnamese and were forced to the jungle to fight an insurgent war leading all the way up to UN backed and monitored "free" elections in the early 1990's. It would be like sending Americas to Germany in 1940 to instruct the Germans on how to build and run concentration camps and then never talking about it or questioning it and what effect it had and why they did what they did. No naivety here, I've been to Cambodia many times myself and seen the skulls, you never quite forget the feeling of finding and holding rope bindings and bones in the dirt that have been laying there untouched for 40 years, with the knowledge that the last time they were exposed to air was when they were tied around someones wrists as they waited to be killed. Also I've had first hand experience of the results of SAS operations in the North of Ireland and that was not a positive experience at all. The fact that this was done covertly by a highly secretive military unit is fact that the UK government were concerned about the optics and morality of it and didn't want anyone to know about it. When you are on the wrong side of history no one wants to seem to talk about it. Jack Carr has had a few chances to ask SAS operators who were active in this period about this but never has, if you are going to interview someone you should cover the highs, like the Iranian Hostage siege and also press them about things they seem a bit reluctant to talk about not just fan boy out about them. Bob Woodward said "Democracy Dies in Darkness" and I would add that theory applies to truth, accountability and history as well.
