Thanks for the video, I'm in the process of a restore now... For anybody missing Jerry can caps. A cap off of a 55 gallon drum fits perfectly.

That was actually one of the reasons the US-made jerry cans have that particular lid. British made cans have a flip-open top, rather than a screw on lid.

A chunk of rebar, electrical tape the end and wrap where it exits the neck and electrolysis... works great... can even zinc coat the inside as well, before red kote.

Appreciate it. I have 3 cans that are way more rusty than the rusty one you showed, but hope it works. If not, I'll use ferric chloride or muriatic acid.

Cool video.. need to do two cans that my dad had for years. I think there as old as me (53) or older. Hate to lose them. There where times we last one or two because we forgot we had them in the back of the dump truck and dump them out with the load 😢. But thank for posting this video

I took three of these in partial trade for some tires and one of them has a small leak along the bottom seam, I think. It's always just a little wet. I'm wondering if anyone's had any luck sealing a leak in these with Red Kote or Kreem...I've had good luck with both on dirtbikes before, but they really only have to survive vibrations. They generally don't get roughed up as much as gas cans getting shuffled around in everyday use in the back of pickups and shop floors, etc.

good idea but when turning the can to coat the inside be careful doing the top the vent starts at the spout opening and is a tube that runs to the back along the top the coating will close it off and its not easy to open back up been there done that

Hi, great video. I am currently cleaning 3 of these. I already removed most of the oxide from the cans, but a yellowish-greenish film remains. To one I mixed baking soda and h2o to neutralize Vinegar and then dish soap but I got rust back. I already removed rust again. But I don’t know what to do now if I put h2o again, I am afraid it will oxidized again.! Help!!!🤔
@ErayBukulmez
@ErayBukulmez 2 жыл бұрын
If you put h20 , you will see oxide again. You can put just fuels. Oxide is comprise of h20 and 02’s reaction.

As I'm an Aussie, I'd call those Ameri-cans. Only seen those with G.I 's in WW2 docos. We only have the Euro/German type lid which are slow and gluggy to empty. What are these like to use???
@Elandycamino
@Elandycamino 4 жыл бұрын
Haven't used a euro German tank it's gluggy but it pours faster with a ar-15 on your back and a Glock on your hip, while smoking a cigarette 👍🇺🇸🦅🇺🇲

The GI cans have the wide mouth that matched the GI vehicles of the time and they were designed to flow stupid fast for on the run battlegrounds they will empty in seconds versus the actual jerry cans where they do glug and seem to take over 1-2minutes to empty that would seem like a life time if your being shot at and run out of gas

Do you mix the vinegar with water? Do you think a plastic or metal brush would damage the tank?
@dR00Ck
@dR00Ck Жыл бұрын
You can dilute the vinegar with water. 5 gallons of vinegar would work also. I don’t think a brush would hurt a metal can as long as it’s cleaned out really well before the coating

Hi dR00Ck. Are any of the jerry cans leaking before you coated them with redkote? How's the coating now after 8 months? My motorcycle gas tank is rusty and leaking. I'm thinking of using redkote.
@dR00Ck
@dR00Ck 8 жыл бұрын
Only one of the cans had a "weeping leak", meaning it would collect dirt around one of the seems thus indicating a slow leak. This stuff is amazing and the tanks still look good inside. There are a few spots along the seem that didn't get a good enough coating imo. This is why its important to really de-grease/clean and let them dry good. The tanks look really good on the inside and I am super happy with this product. It should work really well with a small gas tank since you have holes designed for draining. These jerry cans were a little difficult to get all excess liner out. I would say go for it! I got mine on amazon amzn.to/2bFYsGf

Look up Jerry can design and and the genius behind the original design, and you will never buy one of those again. That's the crappy American knockoff with the inherent weakness of the bottom seam. They seem like they might be better because they are heavier gauge metal, but its necessary because of the poorer design. Stick to the two-piece cans, and never by the cube can't unless you are some kind of Oddity collector, because they are one of the weakest designs.
@HollywoodCreeper

Seems like you might as well just sell one of the old ones for $40, pocket the $10, and spend the $30 on a brand new Walmart jerry can that is metal and has a spout and they deliver for free.
