The thing that I really like about this channel is every restoration actually feels like a restoration that preserves a feeling of an old object, with imperfections like pitting on metal, weird old texturing on wood etc. That's not to say channels like my mechanics are not impressive, with that guy I am blown away in every video by the fact he turns an old thing into something that looks like it's brand new. It's just that I prefer it when some quality of "vintageness" is preserved, like with this heater - some amazing work has been done here and it is obviously perfectly functional, but it looks like an antique piece worthy of being exhibited in a museum, not like something that came off a conveyor belt last monday.
@Cora.T2 жыл бұрын
One thing I "dislike" about my mechanics is the use of the mirror finish, I understand why he does it and it's absolutely a show of brilliant craftsmanship. But it makes the metal look a bit like plastic sometimes

For such few parts to repair, your workmanship is excellent. This has been one of the most enjoyable restorations to date. Nice that you restored the handle as opposed to crafting a new one. I am a woodworker (as well).

Lovely work. I think my seamstress wife would prefer a slight bevel or rounding on the plate circumference to get rid of that slightly rough edge so it doesn’t snag fine fabrics. We love old irons, too!

I won't lie, seeing that extra hand threw me for a second. One of those, something isn't quite right, moments! 🙃 Between being at 888k subs and the kitty's guest appearance, notice my name and pic, I couldn't help but sub. Nicely done, too. I like that you didn't "restore" the handle, opting for a light sanding and staining. If it's old, keep it old, is my preference.

I truly enjoy watching this channel. I subscribed after watching your first video and patiently wait for new ones. Of all I've seen here, the wheelbarrow restorations are my favorite so far. I like that you reuse what you can. It reminds me of a saying that came from people that lived through hard times. They said "Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without."

I always wonder: why do you have to clean the rust before taking it to the sander? it feels like the sanding machine could handle everything at once could it not?
@andy_rb2 жыл бұрын
One reason is that the sand in the blaster is reused a few times, until the grains are no longer sharp. Contaminating the sand with rust particles makes it work less well and you have to change the sand more often. So it's useful to remove what rust you can, especially with a low effort method like electrolysis, before you blast, so you can use the sand longer.
@waffles36292 жыл бұрын
Rust means more debris in the sandblaster, which makes it less effective because you also blast the sanding residue. Removing most of the rust beforehand extends the time you can use the sand.
@latimelord35862 жыл бұрын
Also, the rust that gets into the sand can also be reintroduced into the metal,
@Caboose302 жыл бұрын
Rust also wears down sanding implements faster than clean metal.

Grandma had one of these. Heavy as you would expect for something made entirely of iron. Then you looked at the other things she had, like a wooden floor polisher, also maddening heavy, and you would understand why grandpa wouldn't push so hard. His manly face wouldn't make a dent in her heavy fists.

Hello there, love your guys videos been watching for years. I noticed you used a spoon for the electrolysis. I can't help but wonder if it's stainless steel? If it is please don't use stainless steel It creates a very caustic chemical that you get exposed to.

When using this iron on delicate, thin clothes, you can use a pillow case as a barrier. You put the extra cloth on top of the thin cloth your afraid will burn, then the cloth won't burn.
