I have one of these and it's a turd--I bought it cheap for a job and promised I'd restore it once the job was finished. It's finally time to get down to it, so cheers for this one Alex.

When you do electrolysis the red positive lead goes on a piece of scrap steel so the rust gets attsched to that not the part of the vice, spart from that you did sn awesome job

This is a nice high quality vise. The care and maintenance you gave it will add many years of life to it. Besides, it's always more pleasant to use a clean, nicely functional tool than a dirty neglected one. Thanks for saving this good vise, and regards from the USA.

Ukenick I think some people feel a need to be rude on the internet because they daren't say boo to a goose in real life. It gives them a feeling of power. The notion that you can advise someone or make recommendations without insulting them, just doesn’t give them the same feeling of self importance.

I just bought a Number 3 on an auction. Will be picking it up tomorrow, don't really think it's in bad shape but it does need some clean up. Hope I can do as good a job as you did. Thanks for the video, I will use it as my guide. That's a nice color Blue you used on the repaint. Well done.

Great job. It must have take massive force to snap that base in half. The remains of the little hole along the middle of the broken edge is where a retaining pin was driven in to prevent the threaded part from moving backwards.

Hi, I've same vice, to do same clean up as shown in vid do I just leave that pin as is? Don't touch it I mean... ?! Thank you.
@garyneal2963
@garyneal2963 4 жыл бұрын
@@julioseviltwin2304 The missing pin would normally be used to keep the part the main screw, screws into - you would need to remove the pin first, then remove that part :) I'm just in the process of refurbing the same vice aswell - lol. Buggered up the repaint as must of been some oil or something as paint hasn't adhered properly in parts, so needs restripping.

@@garyneal2963 thank you. I appreciate that as I picked up another and can now see the workings of it. 👍🏻 Soon as I get one I soak it for a day in Mr muscle kitchen power.. savage oven cleaner degreaser foam. Power wash the lot off, dry with heat gun or an air compressor, spray it in isopropyl. It takes off grease, oil, gunk and even the paint ...

I noticed that the rear of the footplate was broken off which should have a 3rd fixing hole at the back of the vice, have you found it stable in use with only 2 locating bolts?
@steviebee1989
@steviebee1989 3 жыл бұрын
I bought one of these today. Intact luckily. With the broken rear of the footplate you’d want an extension brazed on for sure as I can’t imagine it being strong enough in all circumstances of its use.
@N269
@N269 2 жыл бұрын
Not only that, but the pin holding the slotted worm gear isn't there. But I would have thought 2 bolts stable enough, but I wouldnt put too much weight on it, not just for the missing purchase, but also the above mentioned retainer pin being missing.

Hey, thanks for the video! I’ve followed your video step by step but had to stop before I could finish and the vice has been sat in the garage for a couple of months. The non painted metal has started to rust again, despite the initial citric acid bath and rub down. Any thoughts as to how this can be avoided? I’ll rub it down again but don’t want it to keep happening. Thanks, N

@@tash_j19 👍🏻 you can even start off as low as 8 parts spirits to 1 part boiled linseed oil. Old classic barn find cars are preserved as found, with the above 8:1 mix. Great too to preserve rust as a feature, try it on an old pliers or wrench. An older version of that cocktail is equal parts: denatured alcohol, boiled linseed oil & melted bees wax. It's like hair gel 😬.. put on a pair of rubber gloves and lather it onto any metals. Prevents & preserves rust. 👌🏻

Ok, I am glad to see you put something in the tapped holes for the jaws. Too many times I see guys who've had to move Heaven and Earth to get a rusted/broken screw out and they always just put a new one in with nothing on them to prevent the same thing happening in the future. I always wipe mine with a anti-seize lubricant, you shot in some grease. Good job. Also, primer and paint. Double good job. However, you didn't get all the old paint off before painting. Points off for that. LOL!

I just refurbished a Record No 3 (video uploaded on YT) vice and mounted it on a stand because I need mine to be portable. These are great vices. You could use another steel to weld a repair section on the base. Weld it on using dissimilar welding rods and a Manual metal Arc welder. You would need to pre-warm the vice beforehand in an oven to raise the temperature so as to avoid a thermal shock and then weld failure.
