I have just taken an SL25 & SL18 on the same circuit out of service August 2022 to be replaced by Philips LED. They never let me down & I can see no darkening inside. Being the early days of CFL, they were expensive at around AUD40.00 in Sydney in 1984. They can join my collections of old goodies!

Wonder what the cost savings over the lifetime were

I found a nib SL-25 in a house clearance place back in the late 00s been running it as a hall lamp and moved three years ago and installed as a landing lamp. Keeps a good spread of light. I don't really know much history on these. How better or worse are they compared with the modern energy savers. I run a few calex rgb smart bulbs too now.

Such a shame it got damaged. These were well renowned for running way beyond their rated lifetimes. I buy them occasionally when they come up cheap from ebay, some people charge upwards of £50 for one but you can occasionally find examples for as little as £1-£2. Ive got boxes and boxes of them stockpiled to (hopefully) last a lifetime. Not many fittings at the moment but that'll change when I get my own place.

Lucky I have a few myself, anyway it gave me the opportunity to dismantle one of those lamps without destroying a good one. Too hard to see through the glass envelope so easier to pull it apart. They sure are well made, designed for a lng service life. They certainly can be expensive, worth looking for them now as they are hard to come by, especially here in central Australia. Good that you have a stockpile, they should last you for some time. I came across one recently that looks more or less identical to the magnetic ballast types but this one has an electronic driver module inside, much lighter than the ballasted one too.

rustymotor ah, yes I came across them too. Same design and “jar” as the later magnetic types but fully electronic. Unfortunately I don’t think they’ll last as long as the tubes instant start with a flash of purple every time. Cool to have as collectors items though as I don’t think that variant was common.

Should be possible to Frankenstein another florescent onto that base, no point wasting a low/no-hours power supply circuit and it'll be fun to try it! Suppose it would act as a ballast for a small straight-tube bulb?

TheFurriestOne Yes, a straight tube will work fine, I will search for a similar rated tube that I can connect to the structure. I think I have a U shape tube somewhere.

Sounds like a good plan!

The postal service/couriers is shocking considering what you have to pay for shipping. I remember then while I still lived in The Netherlands, early 1980's. Very expensive, new lamp technology, then around 30 NL Guilders then. Pity the lamp was toast on arrival. (BTWI am over In Aussi next week, about 5 hours inland from TooWoomba for Thunda Rockets Down under.) Hope to see some interesting wildlife as well.

Hi Ray, yes it was annoying to have the lamp damaged, mixture of poor packing from seller and postal rough handling. Anyway it gave me the opportunity to open one of those lamps up and check out how it is constructed. I wish I knew that rocket event was on, I would have tried to make a trip to it and may even have caught up with you! I use to make home made rockets with mostly failures however a double stage rocket actually flew very well! Hope you enjoy your trip and hopefully you have documented some good action. Cheers, Ian

I do my best to get some good footage from the rockets, as well of interesting meters and power structures during my travels. Then also will be driving down to Melbourne over the following days after the event. @@rustymotor
