Rut Mfg Brush Eliminator on John Deere 35G Mini Excavator Review | CBH

We just got this 36" rotary cutter from Rut Mfg, it is called the Brush Eliminator. We put it on our 35G and tried it out. It hooked up easily and cuts great. We need to maintain our trails and a few hillside views that would need cut with weed eater brush cutters otherwise. We plan to get lots of use out of this machine with this cutter. So far definitely a recommended attachment if you are looking for something similar. Not in any way endorsed or paid for this review. That whine after letting off means the back pressure is stopping the cutter rotation. Your return should not cause any back pressure or you will over tax your return lines. It should dump directly into the hydraulic tank. I had the same issue. Now when i release the cutter throttle it spins down freely, quietly and slowly. Call Rut if in doubt.

The hammer mode is supposed to change the return line into an unrestricted flow to the hydraulic tank. I am now thinking maybe my lines are reversed, the cutter spins correctly but maybe it’s being supplied through the return line and the supply is acting like a restricted return? 🤷‍♂️ I’ve been thinking about digging deeper into it for a while now and your comment has motivated me to get this figured out and fixed. The whine is annoying and sounds like it probably isn’t good from a longevity standpoint. Thanks again, have a great day and be safe!

@@CopperBarnHomestead The whine is the compression of the hydraulic fluid in the lines. You can imagine the pressure required to stop that spinning head. I paid to have a direct return line added to my machine when I bought it. Good luck and thanks for the video.

You really need to add protection to the front of your cab and limit mowing while the cutter head is tilted away from you. Be careful.

You can set up a T with shut offs and keep your thumb plumbed all the time, just shut it off.

Not only that, but I think I will order that clamp for attaching the hoses. I have a fence post auger I switch to, and can’t stand getting the hoses on without having to bleed the lines off!

I added a piece of 3/8" Lexan to the front of my Kubota KX040 for protection. I agree with your observations - only a few pieces get thrown toward the operator and at low speed, but the Lexan gives an extra layer of protection. I have a constant on switch, and as demand for moving the boom or tracks are used, it takes away fluid from the cutter and you get that annoying hydraulic "braking" sound. That I could do without. Otherwise, it does a reasonable job at cutting. Don't expect mulcher type results. That's not this piece of equipment.

Is there a way to not have to use the thumb switch to power the cutter where it stays on continuously? Also when you purchased the cutter head from rut did they tell you that you would have to hold the thumb button all the time?

Thanks for watching and your comment. I don’t know of another way to run it other than with the thumb button. On my 35G the flow required to run cutter takes away from flow to other functions so continuously running cutter would limit stick movement. I can lower stick and roll cutter down along with swing side to side with cutter running. I can’t raise stick or rotate head up while cutting so continuously running cutter would not benefit my machine. I am sure Rut would have told me that if I asked but I didn’t, and in my case I am fine with how it operates on my machine. Rut was very helpful in ensuring my flow requirements and coupler style and size matched up. Thanks again, have a great day and be safe!

@@wendybaker3334 Thank you for watching and your question, yes the button on the back side of the stick on mine is also a momentary on button. It operates the cutter as long as it’s held down. I had to go out to the machine to find that out lol. For me it seems easier to use the rocker switch on the top of the handle. The only other button on that side is the horn on mine.

Thanks for watching and your comment. It has held up and worked great. We just made another video with it clearing trails a couple weeks ago. The only thing it does is make you want a bigger machine with more flow. With the blade running the excavator can’t raise the arm. Can lower arm, rotate, and even track but don’t have enough flow to lift the arm without getting off the cutter flow. We really are happy after a year of use and it has been extremely useful for us.

I have a 35g. It’s annoying that we don’t have a mower or mulcher that can run continuously without disabling other hydraulic functions.

The problem is that there is still pressure in the line...take a flathead screw driver and push in on the nipple on the cupler of the house and it will release the pressure and go right on... no Ned to buy 89 dollar gadgets

Thanks for watching and your comment. These are flat faced hydraulic couplers, I believe the iso ag couplers have the little nipple on them. They are still basically the same idea though so I will try that out. I already have the EZ clamp thing. The clamp works great but basically does what you describe using the couplers instead of a screwdriver. I have used the clamp on my tractors pioneer hydraulic couplers as well and it works great there too. Thanks again! Have a great day and be safe!
