Ruth, I'd recommend you search out a 1945 film 'I Know where I'm Going' A love story, it features a small boat battling the Corryvreckan whirlpool as a key part of the plot. The reasons for there being no woodland stem indirectly from the Act of Union. 1. The huge Caledonian Forest was gradually cut down to provide timber for the wooden warships of the growing 'British" navy, not just timber for the actual frames, decks and planking but also for the masts and spars, etc. The trees were cut and floated down rivers to the coast. And of course the British navy was huge. 2. Following the Jacobite risings we had the clearings. The indigenous people and their ragged cattle were cleared from the land to make way for sheep (which eat the tops out of young saplings, and for sporting estates for the new rich (industrial revolution) - they paid gamekeepers to annually carry out planned burnings of the hills and moors to provide new growth heather for grouse to feed on.
@ruthaislingАй бұрын
Thanks for sharing more details about this topic.
@GordonDonaldson-v1cАй бұрын
andyallan2909 -- that is all very true. Also, it is said that all the trees in Fife were cut down to build the Great Michael for James IV's navy. It was the largest warship of its day, and put the fear of god into the English. Incidentally, much of the Black Forest was cut down and floated down the Rhine to build ships for the Dutch East India Company, Holland being somewhat deficient in the forestry department. The Germans had the good sense to replant it.
