I tried Starlink internet in remote Scotland. I’ve tried many different vanlife internet solutions over the years but nothing has been perfect. Ever since Starlink satellite internet launched, I’ve wanted to try it and since I will be off-grid and travelling in remote Scotland, I deliberated a lot but finally decided to get Starlink.
Starlink internet doesn’t rely on a mobile network or wifi like many other internet solutions. Elon Musk is behind Space X and Starlink and they launch satellites into space, and you connect to the satellites in order to get internet.
In this video, I share with you the Starlink set up, the speed tests and my Starlink review after having used it in rural Scotland, UK for the last few weeks.

If we haven't met before... Hi, I'm Ruth 👋 and I recently bought a campervan to travel my home country of Scotland after living overseas for 12 years. I’ve hardly seen anything or been anywhere in Scotland and now is the time to change that!

£85 per month is a bargain for the flexibility and speed. Have it at home or bring it in your van, your onto a winner. Van dwellers and travellers have dozens of semi permanent soloutions for van use. In remote areas while traveling this really is a game changer.

Your downland speeds are amazing and comparable with internet service one gets here in the States. I lived briefly in Thurso back in 2008, in the days of 3G cellphone service and I didn't get speeds any where near your numbers today. My sister lives in southeast Alaska and Starlink is very popular where she is. It's a Godsend to those who live outside of the larger towns. Good luck with your travels and be safe.

Ruth, your channel found its way to my KZbin recommended list, so as I enjoy van/DIY/tech/outdoor stuff, decided to take a look - and am so glad I did. I have this evening binge-watched many of your episodes, and will continue to do so over the coming days. Love your approach, your frankness and honesty, and your fabulous desire to learn and just get on with what needs doing. One thing I might add perhaps as thought for the future... maybe consider getting an amateur radio license and use a small handheld or even a car installed amateur radio (or both). Appreciate this might be for another time, but might be worth considering as there's many of us amateur radio users about. Keep up the great work. John (GW3JVB)

@@ruthaisling Hi Ruth - it is for two way radio communications. Taking and passing the RSGB (Radio Society of GB) examinations, in three levels, grants you privilege to use the relevant amateur radio frequencies (overseen by OFCOM) at the power level associated with your level of qualification - Foundation, Intermediate and Full. With any level you get your own call sign (mine is GW3JVB) and at what's termed the foundation level, you can use a handheld radio transceiver or even a vehicle mounted transceiver to communicate with other amateur radio enthusiasts who might be within a 50/60 mile range! Of course, I am simplifying the process, but it is a great hobby, and one that when remote, can come in extremely useful! Please do shout if you want to find out more or need any additional info, more than happy to help. John.

Hi Ruth, I’ve heard about Starlink but you have done all the figures, well done. I have 2 SIM card routers and external antenna but it does rely on getting a signal. Up the West coast of Scotland it can be a problem but it’s getting better these days, I have an EE contract and a 3 12Gb per month cost about £40/month, EE is better as 3 only give you 12Gb in the EU, I had unlimited in Spain earlier this year but we can’t go now for more than 90days. You download speed is fantastic with Starlink I don’t get anything like that but it’s ok for Netflix and news etc via our Amazon Fire Stick. From Durness down to the Kyle mine worked fine. I think with your nature of work Starlink is the best option even with the purchase price, one of my routers Netgear M2 was £400ish on Amazon. If you can stop payment when you’re not using it that is really good. Enjoyed your video, great stuff, Cheers Mike🍷

Starlink is becoming popular on boats and ships too. The monthly cost on their 5Tb package is $5,000 per month then $2 per gb over. It sounds a lot but considering 5Tb on VSAT is around $85,000 - $249 per 3gb, you can see why it's becoming popular on yachts. There is a cheaper Starlink maritime package which is $250 for 50gb. So all in all your monthly Starlink cost isn't too bad. Not to mention Starlink Maritime equipment is $2,500 but VSAT equipment is around $35,000.

Hi Ruth, I have a 5G antenna fitted my van, with a 4G router only, It’s always been underwhelming for me tbh, most of the sales hype from the supplier was BS -particularly the original smarty sim which it was supplied with. But I have ran a Spanish roaming sim for coverage across Europe and UK. That worked well across the highlands and abroad but then was cancelled without much warning. Been watching the Starlink prices fall gradually, Very intriguing, It’s def the way to go if your a heavy user but my personal need has changed and I can manage with a payg sim now just for monitoring the van systems etc. 😊

And if you want to go extreme and want a secondary screen for your laptop, take a look at usb-c laptop monitors with power pass trough.

Thanks for the video. I just sub’d. Can you tell me how Starlink Performs for Zoom, Google Meets or Teams calls? You mentioned you run a business on the road. Is the picture and audio solid for conference calls? Also, are there any limitations on the amounts of data which can be used with the starlink package you mention?

I'm still really happy with it and it's still the best internet solution for my needs. Speeds aren't as fast as you'll find in houses with super fast wifi but it's still better than what I can get in my house. The power usage is a challenge. If I need to work, I tend to go to a campsite and use EHU so I don't need to worry about power usage.

I live in Finland and I have a 500/250mbs fixed fiber optic connection at home. However, I'm really interested in Starlink, and I've been thinking about getting it as a backup connection that would start working automatically if there was a problem with the fiber optic internet. The only reason I haven't bought Starlink yet is its price. But fortunately, I could suspend the subscription, and then activate the subscription when I need a Starlink connection. Hopefully the Starlink prices would go down in the future, at least I think so. When the number of customers at Starlink increases, I believe that they would be able to lower the prices. Starlink started operating in Finland at the beginning of this year.

Miss this is a game changing technology for remote areas and mountains where no human exists. Its a full independent system that everyone should have if he or she consumes lot of data per month. Off course we would be paying too much at cost of it's robustness.

Hi Ruth. SpaceX is able to fly satellites on its own, so the cost performance seems to be much better than before. If the antenna is installed outside, it can be used in rainy weather, but the battery consumption is larger than I expected, so I'm worried about using it on the move. If the antenna is leased, there is no risk of failure, and other basic questions have been solved, thank you.

I cam from the very middle of shikoku . there are many mountains sight. it is being called that Tomisato village of Iyomishima city in Ehime prefecture. there are some smal rivers where is at this site. and this small rivers are flowing the place of valleys. and this yamame ( it is belonging with the trout family) . this fish can be alive in the colder river situation only. therefore, this yamame can not go down from this river site to the city`s site warmer river. and this place is at 1,600m`s site from the sea level. therefor in Winter season , we have to be in the much sonwing situation . but on the other hand, we don`t need to use airconditoner while the summer season. about this site , I put some one on this page later. now I am living in Tokyo. I was living at this site for 8 years in my childhood. but my family`s ground is still at there now. so, you are trying to be showing me very good nature view site , so, I am getting to be wanting to back to my village site sometimes . you are very good adventure person to be giving me very good nice nature view video thank you. static.retrip.jp/article/119723/images/119723c306f949-0e46-489e-bfe4-4945f99c0bea_l.jpg , 33.865072, 133.526307  33.865072 133.526307  レストラン  ホテル  アクティビティ  交通機関  駐車場  薬局  ATM 保存済み 最近
