I fell in love with the city the first time I visted in the 80s. For me, since I'm unable to drive due to my poor eyesight, a major factor is that it's one of the few cities where it's easy to get around without a car and the only one where it doesn't snow.

Showed my last workplace before moving Back East - Hills Bros. Coffee! Lived in SF from 1978 - 1986. Moved from New England, and then back to New England. Two things that sum up why I still love that city (and why I now nostalgically browse real estate videos): 1 - political and cultural diversity and equity, far ahead of where I came from - still. My spirit felt free, after getting used to it. I miss that. 2 - panache -- just about everything San Franciscans do, they do with panache. Starting with all the bright colors everywhere. When I meet a San Franciscan here in N.E., their panache almost gives them away. I think the San Andreas has something to do with it? My most outstanding memory among many outstanding ones: partying with friends in the Richmond until the wee hours then, not wanting to wait all by myself to ride the Muni home, just walking from there to my studio apt. in the 24th and Mission area, hiking up above Cole Valley, across Upper Market and back down through Castro-Noe Valley to the Mission. Under a full moon, with the foghorn booming across the Bay, and all the lights spread out at my feet, and the stars that were visible above my head. Did that a few times. Still feeds my soul.

My feeling is that unless one makes a big income and yes you mentioned ‘tech’.. then it’s plausible to move here…. But sadly my millennial kids cannot afford San Francisco or the Bay Area. One has been working for the same firm in Brisbane for 5 years, has a college degree and still lives with us because they cannot afford to buy a home and cannot afford to rent, and the other moved to a city on the other side of the continent and has started a new life there because she was able to buy a home on one salary…. And has a masters from a private university in Manhattan but chose to work in a field where she helps people in need…..

This breaks my heart to read, but I know it's true. I'm sorry. That must be really hard! I'll be honest, I'm worried about this for my own kids who are now 15 and 12. I'd love for them to stay close but it's unclear if they will be able to afford to start their lives here. The cost of living is very high, especially for those who are starting out.

I grew up in the City and have lived here continuously since 1977. Before real estate skyrocketed to unbelievable levels, San Francisco was a magnet for culture and the arts. The City was home to legendary musicians such as Journey, Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Huey Lewis & the News, Metallica, Sylvester, Carlos Santana, Green Day, Steve Miller Band, and Sly & the Family Stone to name a few. Now, I can't even think of any major music act that came out of SF since 2000. The one thing that really hasn't changed over the years is our vibrant food scene. Those who've been here since the 1980s will wax nostalgic at groundbreaking restaurants like Masa's, Stars, The Flying Saucer, Spork, Aqua, Cypress Club, Postrio, and Square One. However, even the food scene seems to have "cooled down" in this City since the pandemic. For 2 years in a row now, no Bay Area food institution was awarded a James Beard award and only one made it in World's 50 Best for 2024: Single Thread in Healdsburg.

I grew up in Deerfield, IL and have been living in San Francisco’s Richmond since 1994. Saw a swim friend yesterday who moved back here. I was surprised as he has so many choices given that he has EU citizenship and grew up in Boulder, CO. Not owning a car since 1994 has kept me from going broke and somehow manage to travel from Pier 27 cruise terminal after morning swim in Aquatic Park.

I'm more active and fit than i was when i was living in San Diego. Even though it is on the pricey side it does even out by not owning a car. The weather isnt bad and theres tons of things to do, even if I'm bored all I have to do is walk around the city and thats enough to keep me busy. And yes like any large city there is crime but I don't go to those areas.

I lived in San Francisco for a cuople of years. The one thing that is mussing is the thiught that economucs doesn't doesn't apoly. Rent control and less hiusing doesn't increase hiusung costs, higher taxes don't don't get passed on to the consumer. I just returned from a ine week visit. Considering all the money in the tech money in the local economy, it's disappointing several neighborhoods are in such bad shape. The tech industry will have a harder time raising money 8n the new financial environment; so that advantage will be less goung forward.

The best part of SF is its energy. It's not NYC go-go frantic, but a palpable "electricity" of the future. It's like "THIS is where tomorrow is being made". Yes, it's in Seattle, West LA, Berkeley, La Jolla, but to a lesser extent. Maybe it's the combination of the universities, the tech scene, bio tech on top of the Bohemian vibe. If only they could get over their repressed inferiority complex of Los Angeles.

LOL I watched the original Terminator in a theater on Geary when it came out. People moving to San Francisco: Making 6 figures / year, live on the outskirts of city. I guarantee you aren't parking your car on the street downtown. Fairly certain you aren't doing any shopping there either. Keep it real. I used to party in SF all the time. Spent the first few years of my adult life at Ruby Sky watching EDM dj's spin. I wouldn't set foot in downtown today.
@livinginsanfranciscoca
@livinginsanfranciscoca 4 ай бұрын
Downtown is going through a bit of a hard time. I think one problem is that retail shops can't stay open anywhere, not just SF downtown, because we ALL shop on line instead of going to brick and mortar stores. I know I'm guilty. I want them to be there for the rare occasion that I want to physically go in but unless we support them more often they can't afford to stay.
@frankiek2691
@frankiek2691 4 ай бұрын
@livinginsanfranciscoca A lot less to do with online shopping and a lot more to do with the rampant crime, theft, and homelessness in the bay. It was once a beautiful metropolis and cultural hub, now the whole area reeks of urine, and is littered with homeless encampments and used needles. You literally cannot park on the street without getting your windows smashed in. My reference to the lack of downtown shopping is due to mass exodus of commerce, which is a direct result of our Governor's soft on crime policies. Despite all this, still one of the most expensive cities in the world to live in.

There are lots of other affordable states with good weather, "great outdoors" and day trips. How much of that can you really enjoy if you are living in a state where you have to constantly work to make ends meet?
