Today we are ranking and roasting IT GIRL brands! From Djerf Avenue to Princess Polly, I'm deciding if they deserve to not exist or a worth the hype! This is just my opinion and in general just a fun little silly video :) I decided not to rank these on the sustainability factors because obviously most of them aren't and instead just if I think they are worth it or not, but the sustainability factors do influence of course my opinion a little.

Sezane literally went to Mexico, took photos of the native people, paid them 10 USD and went ahead and did knock offs of the native clothing, not giving credit to the authors nor paying for it. In other words, they are like Zara that wanted to patent Mexican embroidery patterns that had existed for years. I get colonizer vibes.

@Sophia Denison-Johnston you could probably find small native owned businesses that ship to the US. If you have the money, there's actually a lot of designers who sell pieces with traditional embroidery. But honestly the best you can do is buy local when you visit Mexico. Go to a local market or street stands. If you can, as a tourist, never haggle. Pay full price as their work is often not appreciated and devalued.

They not only did that, they paid a local indigenous Zapotec elderly woman to dance for them in the brand's clothes while they filmed her, for like 10 us dollars. 10 us dollars. They faced so much backlash they had to cancel the campaign. The Oaxacas state has since passed legislation to stop international brands to exploit and steal indigenous designs. Capitalistic colonization for sure.

In all honest Brandy Melville as a company doesn’t surprise me. I feel the reason they are so popular is because they create this more affordable exclusivity you would only really expect from expensive designer fashion that is deliberately made to flatter solely women who are tall and thin, but more particularly borderline underweight. They have an incredibly similar standard to luxury fashion houses-it being an unspoken rule that the models all have to look a certain way to fit the clothes. I think they were saying the quiet part many fashion houses who have maybe one single plus size model in a show refuse to say aloud.

I do think a lot of this is valid criticism, I will, however, always stick up for naturally petite people like myself who feel that same exclusivity when they don't fit into "adult" or even "junior" oriented brands. I'm absolutely not saying that Brandy's lack of sizing isn't a business tactic to sell exclusivity. Still, for me personally, it can feel like the only place where clothes are made specifically for people my size. Far too often, in my opinion, the body-positive movement only focuses on gaining acceptance of larger bodies, even to the extent of vilifying smaller-than-average ones. There's so much damaging rhetoric on both sides of the aisle, and it can feel like it strips petite women of their womanhood. Ideas of "real women have curves" and "no healthy woman can fit in Brandy" really devalue smaller bodies. In the 12 years since I stopped growing, I have had the unfortunate message drilled into me that when I don't fit into the smallest size of women's clothing, it makes me not a woman. For all of its faults, Brandy Melville helped fill that gap in the market.
@pixi3d3ath47
@pixi3d3ath47 Жыл бұрын
@@ameliaboivin6267 I understand. I think petite brands are needed for people who for any reason can’t fit into standard clothing. I feel if people made more things like Torrid and Brandy, that would be ok. If more brands like them existed, they’d be much less exclusive to the public. If they focused on a particular size and were transparent about it, they could spend more time making quality clothing for their target audience. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with making clothes tailored for people who are skinny and petite, but fashion houses obviously profit off of that by making clothing for them incredibly expensive. their main goal is exclusivity at all costs, not reaching out to a broad audience like brandy.
@olivia4394
@olivia4394 Жыл бұрын
I totally get your point and I do wish Brandy had sizes; however I wear a size 10-12 usually and I have to buy large shirts usually because my arms don’t fit in shirts that usually fit the rest of my body, and for some reason the brandy one size shirts fit me so well. My sisters are small like size 0-2 and me and them can wear the same shirts when we can’t anywhere else and it really shocks me. I have a brandy shirt from like 6 years ago and it still fits me so well even tho I gained weight. Idk what kind of magic it is lol
@alexasunshine83
@alexasunshine83 Жыл бұрын
@@ameliaboivin6267 I just wish they leaned more into being a petite dedicated store like still offering small sizes but at least with many different cuts or something like cater to the petite demographic more, kind of similar to Torrid where they still have multiple offerings of things. Petite Studios is a dedicated petite brand, obviously not exactly the same as Brandy with the clothing trends, but they focus on all petites of different sizes and needs (loads of info of measurements on each piece with sizing). Yes some of Brandy's clothes do stretch like I mentioned, but there's tops that don't so why not add more than one size to help *ALL* petite's or even different chest sizes of petites. I think people would be way less angry if Brandy marketed themselves to fill the difficulty of petite bodies versus only wanting "certain" bodies to be in their clothing due to fat phobia (why Abercrombie had their original downfall and had to rebrand). They don't even have an about section on their website detailing that their goal is to offer petite bodies clothing that fits them because they know how hard that can be. Obviously there's more layers to Brandy though like alleged racism and other controversies. Again all of this is coming from someone who has multiple Brandy secondhand pieces like I said so I totally understand the appeal and that their pieces can really help those in petite bodies.

The quality of the items are NOT worth it as well, they've got zero quality control. So many people on the DA subreddit and other social media have reported issues like staining, extremely bad stitching, clothes falling apart after one wear or wash, sizing issues where the same item with the same size look like completely different sizes. Not to mention their AWFUL costumer service. The DA subreddit is a big eye opener for anyone looking into buying something, haven't bought anything in like 2 years.

Recently, I went into an Urban Outfitters just to check it out as I hadn't been to one in years. I was obsessed with them in high school and they were THE "alternative" and "edgy" store (besides American Apparel)- at least for suburbanites who didn't have easy access to thrifting. I don't know if it's just because my tastes have changed or I no longer like the styles they carry, but it doesn't seem to have the same indie ethos as prior. It's all very popular styles now. Maybe it was always popular and was marketed differently then, though? Anyway I completely agree that the quality is terrible. It's fast fashion but just at a higher price tag than Shein and H&M.

For a long time I was not convinced on Aritzia, but I recently ordered a few pieces from them and I am obsessed! My style is ultra feminine so I never bothered with a lot of the trendier pieces like those leather pants you showed (super cute just not my personal style!) but the quality of their basics is really nice in my experience. Also as a 4’11” girlie I really appreciate that they carry a lot of things in petite sizes. Their stuff is unfortunately pretty pricey but so far I’ve gotten a ton of use out of the things I purchased! I also am a huge lover of Abercrombie, FL&L, Reformation, and House of CB but I’ve definitely had hits and misses from all of them.

I think there’s usually a difference in customer perceived quality and actual quality based on a garments construction and raw materials that sways peoples opinions. I see this a lot in the discourse about realisation par dresses and personally everything I own from them drapes well and is sewn beautifully ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ just something to consider! Thicker doesn’t always mean better quality. I work in apparel manufacturing and sometimes all we do is make a fabric a gauge thicker to increase perceived quality but the the polyester we’re using remains the same

They have never been sustainable, and have have always provided very little information on their sourcing and labor practices. As a Canadian, especially living in vancouver where aritzia originated, its extrememly popular, pretty good quality, but personally when certain pieces, especially when its made form plastic and not natural materials, I do not feel as though the price tag accuratly reflects what your getting sometimes. But, living in Canada, ordering from brands internationally is usually even more expensive because of the currency exchange (CAD $ is soo bad) and then on top of that customs and tax. I do think they made good basics though and good denim brands and I do buy from them every few months, recently i've been loving Depop.

I don’t wear any other socks besides the TNA ones and their jumpsuits and leggings are GORGEOUS. I also thrifted a Babaton cashmere sweater and its one of the most luxurious items I own (I dont really support cashmere production, but I will buy it second hand). Also Aritzia does their browns like no one else. Almost all the brown items I own are from Aritzia either thrifted or bought new. I wouldn’t recommend buying just because its so expensive, but the quality in my opinion is worth it. If you see any of the Aritzia brands at the thrift, snag them!

My question is- how good quality can a baby tee even be? I don’t understand what makes some brands t-shirts worth $80 and some worth $8 (aside from sustainability, but even then it smells fishy to me) 😅

the rating on miu miu was insaneeee but also I have a lot of respect for Alexa for actually criticizing them, even if I disagree. It was an odd choice to include them in this video though when they’re like high high designer though

Lot's of people were mentioning them so I figured since I've seen even just non influencers talk about them on tiktok that I'd just include them! I think their brand identity is great like they have great aesthetics, but just not a fan (for my personal style of course)!

@@alexasunshine83h okay I see, that’s interesting then. Is there a reason you didn’t then include like a Vivianne Westwood as they as also designer and very it girly? I realize at a point the video might get too long though. And like I said I do respect you not being obsessed with them and being a sheep like I am 😂

I chose miu miu over vivianne in this video just because I think they’ve been more trendy just with some “it girl” influencers recently (not saying vivianne isn’t but the video was getting way too long so I had to leave brands out). I’d love to include them in maybe a part 2 though because I do have many thoughts especially as a Nana lover! ❤️

Lisa says gah was such a disappointment for me too. They advertise ethical practices and high quality, and the pieces are pretty but I got a top from them that has cheaply finished seams and it broke almost immediately. It's still technically wearable, but it makes me so sad that they essentially advertise themselves so falsely.

I love aritzia and brandy, the ONLY brands that fit my 22-23 inch waist and 4’11 height. They’re incredible. Aritzia’s “short 3XS” is a fucking GOD SEND rare size and although brandy Melville is technically too big for me, I love how some of their stuff still looks cute as lounge wear

I bought two items from reformation.. and it was a big deal for me as I was coming out of being a teenage gremlin and mostly shopped second hand. The jeans I got are so nice and are my favorite. The dresses I've had, one I bought directly and another I got second hand do not fit me as a shorter person. The other I got second hand and it also just didn't look right on my body.

I love this video so much! I have thoughts on this topic too if I might share. White Fox do not offer refunds. I would not have bought from them if I had known. I wanted to return a terribly fitting top and they only offer store credit. Thankfully I only bought one item so I didn't throw away a lot of money. Shame the top is poorly fitting, itchy, polyester rubbish. Their customer service is also rubbish. House of CB is so weirdly fitting and their mini dresses are way too short. They replied to complaints on the shortness by saying, "The model is five nine and it fits her." But the thing is it was way too short on the model too lol. Djerf Avenue is totally overpriced masculine basics but their bedding is divine! Absolutely stunning, and Matilda has a great vibe so I get why people love her. Selkie is way too much money for what are mostly polyester dresses. Their "sexy baby" aesthetic is super duper unflattering on most body types too, but absolutely stunning on the few bodies it fits. With Jean is lovely when it leans into its pastoral French vibe, but its sizing is deeply inconsistent. I have an XS dress from them and I have not been XS since I was 13. Thankfully returning to them is super easy and they offer refunds unlike White Fox.

I like aritzia BUT imo the quality is honestly horrible for the price. You get clothes that are nicely designed and fit well if you want a basic piece, but I feel like if you have one of their pieces in heavy rotation it does start to degrade pretty quickly. Especially their TNA line

But also now EVERYONE wears them so a point where I’m like bored with them.
