Ok, here's my unpopular opinion... true, simply dressing all in neutrals doesn't make an outfit automatically stylish and elevated... but the same goes for very colorful, busy outfits... they are not better, cooler or more stylish just because they have a lot of colors and elements. I think it just depends on the style of the person wearing the outfit.

Maybe a weird connection, but I feel like cottagecore will never completely phase out because it too-like punk-cannot simply be distilled to a clothing aesthetic. Cottagecore has evolved into an ethos that encompasses reconnecting with nature, promoting sustainability, and encouraging a slower pace of living. Those sorts of sensibilities go beyond trends and consumerism imo. Is it controversial to therefore say that cottagecore-like punk-is not just an aesthetic, but a state of mind?

I agree completely. Cottage core has been in and out of style since the Victorian era. I inherited all of my grandmothers, scarves, costume, jewelry, hats, purses, etc. and for sure it’s cottage core to the max. She loved these items in the 70s and 80s and that definitely was Prairie cottage core goodness my grandmother didn’t even know what an aesthetic was, and she was totally cottage core with lots of ruffles pearls cherubs lace doilies ribbons bows, and everything French English lots of dainty, delicate, feminine decorations. She just loved everything very feminine before there even was a namr for it!! She really enjoyed quiet time,baking, cooking, sewing, crocheting and being at home, loving her family and romantic movies and novels of yesteryear. I definitely agree. This is a minds set and a way of looking at life and living!

That's the difference between an aesthetic, which is pretty much just the visuals, and a subculture/counter-culture. It got adopted en masse as aesthetic, which also happened to punk, grunge, ect., but I don't think it'll die; it's roots are still intact.
@danic2514
@danic2514 Жыл бұрын
I would argue that cottage core has always been a thing so I don't think it's all that revolutionary. It talks about reconnecting with nature in a way that is very centered towards whiteness and the idea of a homestead which just promotes settler colonialism. There's a lot I like about it and some of the DIY ethos (which will be one thing it shares with punk). It has some counter cultural elements but it also has problematic aspects.

I hate ripped clothes. While a not insignificant portion of my feelings is not liking them aesthetically, which is subjective, the thing that really irks me is that they don't hold up as well. There is a reason the edges on garments are finished, generally, because they will fall apart much sooner otherwise.
@robertchavez7926

I moderate a plus-size fashion community group on Facebook and lately they have been gugugaga over the fact that low rise jeans are "in" again because a lot of people have sensory issues and they can't have things pressing into their middle. So, they like low-rise because it's it's below their stomachs. I personally like a high-rise. I need my jeans to come up to my bottom rib! I just want to live in a world where all Rises and all styles of denim are available and are fashionable. No more micro-trends.

Unpopular opinion: People don’t dress for your entertainment, stop calling their outfit boring. It may be classic, plain, or simple, but it’s not boring. Also, people who dress in a classic/smart style (neutrals, button ups, blazers, etc) get so much hate online for?? What? It’s so odd.
@Eloraurora

Some people who dress "classy" online make a big deal out of shaming people who don't. They'll put out a lot of very didactic content: "How to be Ladylike," "10 Things Expensive Ladies _Never_ Wear," etc. Calling these looks boring is a backlash to the classism associated with the aesthetic. If you're just wearing beige and button-downs because you _like_ them, have fun! So long as you're not in the "color is for peasants" camp, the backlash isn't meant for you.

I feel like opinions on 2010s fashion are split between thin people and fat people. For thin people it was comparable to any other fashion decade, but for fat people it was the plus-size fashion boom. We finally had options besides Torrid and Lane Bryant, plus-size fashion bloggers became a thing, stores started expanding their sizing, small business plus size fashion houses opened. It was like being too short to ride roller coasters. Sure, you have the carousel, but the year you finally get tall enough to experience the entire carnival is the best year of your life.

Yes I remember being a fat teenager in the UK in the early 2000s. I was 5'3 and 185lbs and could only find clothes in Evans and occasionally the thrift store. I had to shop clearance in Evans because I was poor. Almost everything I wore looked like it was for someone older. I now live in Bulgaria. I'm 200lbs at 35 and my options aren't always a lot better over here unless I shop online which is annoying because I can't try things on and I don't have standard proportions. I'm glad I'm at least able to find them, though.

I always get a little confused in the conversation about what people "need to do" to dress in a particular aesthetic. i guess i'm just too old to know anyone who approaches things like that? it seems to me like (with the exception of a few aesthetics that are actually subcultures in themselves with music and cultural elements) it's just people finding language to describe particular style inspiration so yes they can search it, tag on social media to be found by people who are drawn to the same things, etc. but i don't think i've ever met anyone who is like, i'm going to go full cottagecore or whatever and buy a bunch of new clothes. instead people (adults) are just like oh hey, that's a cool aesthetic, maybe i'll keep an eye out for a couple pieces more along those lines to incorporate into my wardrobe. or sometimes just oh hey this is a way of describing a style i've had for ages and it's cool to see how other people interpret the same inspo.

@ArtichokeHunter
@ArtichokeHunter Жыл бұрын
@@Androgynary I think cottagecore is a kind of middle-ground area between pure aesthetics and full subcultures, but I'm no expert. There's definitely more of an ethos and hobbies associated with cottagecore, but I don't think it's as much its own culture as punk or goth in terms of having a community, genre of music, publications, specific venues and events, etc. But at the same time, cottagecore is younger so we don't know where it could go. But the activities and ethos associated with cottagecore are also not very unique to cottagecore, like there are lots of versions of reconnecting with nature and slower living that aren't attached to cottagecore, and plenty of people who pick flowers and embroider and bake bread etc. aren't associating that at all with cottagecore and don't necessarily care about it or its aesthetic. I guess that could be said of punk and goth to a degree, but I believe (as an outsider who went to a goth club one) there are more specific elements to those cultures that weren't widely done activities before the cultures came along.
@Androgynary
@Androgynary Жыл бұрын
@@ArtichokeHunter yeah I’m definitely not implying cottagecore has the same lasting historical/cultural background of punk or goth (besides maybe the architectural significance). But I would also say that it’s had a notably longer longevity than the shorter-lived micro trends that came up alongside it. I’m actually surprised it’s lasted as long as it has, with niche online communities developing & branching across age + gender demographics…Can’t same for the likes, idk, fairycore or e-girl. It’s making its appeal to not just gen z tweens, but married men and middle aged/boomer moms, which is interesting. Who’s to say where it’ll go as far a “subculture”, but it’s definitely gone beyond just aesthetic clothing at this point, which makes it less of a micro trend or fad to me. One could argue cottagecore is just this generation’s interpretation on folk or country, which has already existed. But maybe in doing so, it solidifies itself more of a subculture in its own right because it’s based on already existing “cultural movements” in architecture and music. Just like how goth or punk builds upon and evolves across the decades, the same could potentially be happening with cottagecore. Again, it’ll be interesting to see how it actually pans out since it’s all speculation at this point 🤷

I agree with you I only appreciate that I can find clothing and Decour online by understanding what aesthetics and cores I’ve been attracted to my entire life I don’t reimagine or define myself and only box myself into certain aesthetics, because they fit within a certain “core” I had no idea for the longest time that there were even names for these things but for searching purposes, I have figured out that my style is 90s minimalist chic with romantic, ballet core Gothic twist. Basically those are the pieces I try to search for everything sleek minimalist black with lots of lace and clean lines, usually black, white or gray maybe with some blue! Truly, if anything in any style catches my eye I don’t care what core it is!! if I love it, I’ll wear it any decade any silhouette if it makes me happy it’s mine!

All of the 90s/early 2000s trends were easier for very slim people to find the right fit. All the mid-late 2000s trends had stretchy skinny jeans, long flowy tops, and skater dresses, which were so much easier for curvy bodies to find the right fit. I wish certain silhouettes didn’t take over because it’s more about catering to body types than styles or vibes at some point. No matter how trendy mom jeans are…they will never fit me right.

i agree! as a short “average” weight girl i kind of hate high rise jeans oversaturating everything currently because it basically swallows my stomach, midrise seems most flattering on me but also i don’t mind low rise because it balances out my proportions, but low rise is much more expensive these days though unless you get lucky at the thrift store. also the bootcut and flares, which i feel look more flattering on short women. and then there’s those revealing dresses that only look fancy on girls with flat chests who are tall but even then might be too small to fit a tall woman. everything seems to be about bust or waist emphasis + mid/high rise, or no emphasis whatsoever which looks really awkward on those of us with big busts. a lot of fashion is meant for petite, skinny women with flat chests that are either tall or average height, and if it’s compensating for height it still may look unflattering on your chest. and jackets that have strange cuts typical of fast fashion that try to look unique but come off like it could be straight out of euphoria to the h&m racks everyone has already seen.

I've seen articles in the last year or two like OH MY GOD GOTH IS BACK and talking about a bunch of stuff that has no connection to the subculture and trying to make goth into something different and the reaction from myself and other goths is basically 'we're still here? just because a popular female celebrity put on black clothes doesn't make her a 'goth queen'

The thing about personal style is that not "creating" one doesn't mean you don't have one- it's just gonna be what you wear everyday and the sorts of clothes people associate you with. If the people in your life can correctly pin down what you like, you've probably already got a pretty defined look, it's probably just not something you needed to stress. Some people aren't participating in fashion, they're just wearing clothes, and that's ok.

You do need enough to rotate though because it's not good for your feet (and can leave to smelly sweat build-up) to wear the same pair every single day. When I worked out of the house (which was also before our current sneakers-with-everything era), that meant two pairs of trainers, two pairs of dressier leather shoes/boots and a pair of sandals for summer minimum. And five pairs of shoes is still kinda a lot to store when you share space with other people.

I don’t know if this is unpopular, but I think we’re living through a really great time in fashion history. Obviously, in like 5-10 years or so we’ll look back and hate what we’re wearing bc that’s how the trend cycle works, but like in 50-100 years when we can evaluate this era more objectively, I think it’s going to be really loved. It’s not like I really love everything that’s going on atm either, as I’m not the biggest participator in trends and there are too many sub-aesthetics to love everything, but it’s more just the general ethos of this period that I find enjoyable. People are being encouraged to be creative and have fun with their clothes, being playful with colour, and silhouette, and cute little details. I’ve always loved maximalism and not taking clothing too seriously, and I think this will be known as the era of treating getting dressed in the morning as a massive game of dress-up.

One unpopular opinion I have is I think some trends happen simply to make people comfortable to wear it because others are wearing similar things. Which isn't a bad thing but people need to realize you can wear whatever you want! It doesn't need to be a trend or trendy!

Mixing gold, silver, bronze and other metal jewelry has become one of my favorite things. There are a few things that help: one is to have a few pieces that already mix metals that help bring different pieces together. I have some simple stacker rings that are silver and bronze, for instance. It helps when the pieces bring out a similar energy or style. I often do a Southwest look with my jewelry, which includes gold, bronze and silver pieces and various gems. The gems/stones used in jewelry helps in the mixing of metals, as well. It also helps if a few of the pieces in one metal are small and "standard"-- like I have a nose piercing and industrial in silver jewelry that I don't change out, so they are there regardless of what other pieces I'm wearing. Having said all of this, part of the reason I got into mixing metals is that I didn't want to limit myself when shopping from different artisans. I've fallen in love with pieces of all different materials!

Love this video. Would love to see more of them in the future. I don't like clothes that are made of polyester. Because you get to smell bad when you are going to sweat. Especially the mesh fabric from polyester makes people smell so easily. But i do have a dress and a vest which are of a smooth silky like polyester and that fabric is different and doesn't make me smell bad. Maybe it's a poly-cotton mix. But the silky like polyester fabrics are better than the mesh fabric in my opinion. I do have 2 dresses from mesh polyester fabric and i hardly wear them. If i do i wear them i wear a cotton shirt under it which is covering my armpits. And i don't wear them if it's very warm weather. I also wouldn't buy nylon underwear/pants because it's synthetic too and gives the same problems. Only hosery. I prefer natural fabrics for clothes. But some items need to be from synthetic fabrics, like swimwear and sportswear. For those kind of activities polyester or nylon materials are better. I don't think my opinion about polyester/synthetic fabrics is that unpopular.

Low rise jeans are great for people that have a lower tummy pouch if you have had kids and have the lower tummy or just carry your weight there because the waistband goes across that part it hides it better than a high rise which can bulge out under a high-rise waistband

I feel like your natural posture and body shape have so much to do with whether hi-rise jeans are comfortable or not. I find them way more comfy than low-rise jeans, and I think thats because I'm quite thin and tend to sit with a straight back even when I'm relaxed. I'm not saying "just sit up straight! stop complaining!" or anything like that, just that it's more comfortable/natural for me to have an erect posture and I find that a rigid denim jean feels supportive rather than constraining.

Zara is definitely just a more colorful H&M with a larger variety of fabric blends. Many fast fashion stores are full of only basics…tan, off white and blue…sometimes you want pinks, oranges, green and Zara is the only store bringing that. Not everyone wants to dress like their in dystopia (even though we feel like it lol), let’s bring back color! BUT, I primarily shop the sales lol

I thrifted shoes on occasion. Some Jeffry Campbells, Ariat boots. Never panties, underwear bras, wigs. And oddly I wouldn’t thrift Tupperware even though I like the vintage ones- the plastic absorbs stuff and I can’t stop thinking about it! I did wear whatever I liked out of everything in my 20’s - the actual 90’s :) but as I get older, I have curated my style more. But it’s still what I like for example gothic, not just the trendy aesthetics. I hope Coastal Grandma is around in 25 years when I’m ready for it! Chelsea Boots Combat Boots Cowboy boots are a constant style rotation. I’ve been wearing all 3 since the 80s.

The diesel skirt would look amazing with a handkerchief top you know the ones that are just a square of fabric worn as a diamond shape so you have the v shape coming down from under your busy and then a upside down v going up to your neck and just halter neck string around the neck and two string like straps the hold the left and right point of the square around your back

The interesting thing about the “core” thing is that I feel some of them are genuine subcultures that go beyond the the visuals and are also about a lifestyle and values, but if they are viable for it aesthetically then fast fashion gets a hold of them and makes a shallow mockery. And I do think some are now being invented specially just to sell something. Of course I think you can be genuine and responsible about incorporating them into your life and wardrobe after it gets popular but I just feel fast fashion works really hard to zap the soul and meaning from every subculture because thats what happens when nothing but profit matters to you

I rarely comment on a video, but I heard you mention ThredUp several times. I know this was not sponsored and what I am about to say is not on you. But I just did my first order with them and the experience was awful to put it mildly. I ordered from Canada and followed their FAQ in order for them to put the address correctly (as the website didn’t allow me to). The customer service rep told me it was correct but they still sent it to the wrong place. I sent emails and spent hours on the chat with them to find out that they blame me for the mistake and they were only refunding me out of good will. Honestly, after seeing so many sponsorships, I would have thought that was a valid alternative. But, their website is bad, a lot of items are not classified properly, it takes forever to build an order and for them to ship it, for you to realize that they sent it to the wrong place and they blame the customer. After I put them on the spot about all of these things, they basically harassed me over email always claiming that this is all my fault. I would never recommend a business like this and I hope my experience helps others not going through the same.

It’s definitely a bit hard to wear considering my personal style, but I still wear them from time to time and they have been a staple of mine for years lol I have a few pairs of cowboy boots that I’ve just collected over the years, and I plan to keep expanding my collection. Yall are lying when you say you buy unsustainable fast fashion because you can't afford any other way... Literally where i live (Portugal) thrifting is way cheaper and the quality is way superior, besides there's literally big sales every month, sometimes all the items cost 5€ each, sometimes even 4€,sometimes 3€.....2€..........1€!!!!!!!
