FINALLY, I HAVE FINISHED IT! Sorry to everyone who thought that I was dying, or at least I acted like I was when I was working on this. And I will give BIG thanks to my friend who was willing to pretend to drown in my bed so I could have some references.
I usually have a lot of references/easter eggs in my animatics. Usually, I have Disney, like Aladdin or Cinderella.
But this one, I used the short film "Augenblicken." That film is one of my pillars of why I became so interested in 2D animation! It's really good, but I must give a trigger warning that it's about SA. I actually had a plan that I would make an animatic similar/based on that short film, but it's about Hera and Zeus, and I scrapped it. But I couldn't help myself to be inspired by that film!

I do enjoy that Poseidon's whole point throughout the song is literally 'Buddy, if you'd actually finished my son off, I wouldn't have known who to punish'. He doesn't actually care for his child, or at least it seems that way. It seems that he's doing what he's doing because he knows someone that hurt something of his, and he's a greek god. If someone wrongs you, there is only one course of action.

After singing a whole song about how ruthlessness is required, why would he want an apology or grant mercy. He is looking for Odysseus to essentially say he isn't sorry and he would do it again if he had to. Poseidon says, "The line between naivete and hopefulness is almost invisible" because hoping Poseidon would spare Odysseus or his crew was stupid in the God's viewpoint.

First of all, I like this Poseidon in his roughness. That the way he drags and shoves Odysseus shows that he is nothing more than a man who can do nothing before the power of god. Secondly, I like how Poseidon mocks Odysseus’s emotional trauma, remembering the baby. Obviously, he was referring to Troy here. Thirdly, am I not the only one who thought Odysseus was smug at the moment of apology?This is what Poseidon is talking about and it is clear that he has not forgiven him

I think it was the part when Odysseus state that he took no pleasure in Polythemus' pain. Which was a flat out lie since Odysseus literally shouted out his name to the Cyclops so he can always remember that it was he that blinded him. Also Odysseus never truly apologize about blinding Cyclops. Notice he never outright says he sorry, but rather framing it as a form of self-defense ('I only meant to disarm, I only want to run away'). Which yeah, was true, but not something a father would want to hear.

​@@fbiuzz I don't even think this was why he did it. The entire song Poseidon is giving Odysseus a lesson on being ruthless because he is wanting to be good and merciful to everyone he meets. The entire song is Poseidon saying show no mercy to anyone. Then after all that he says to apologize? No. "The line between naivety and hopefulness is almost invisible" Naivety is referring to a lack of wisdom or judgement that Odysseus thinks Poseidon will actually let him go. In Greek mythology Poseidon is the most petty among the gods. After that entire song, and with that background, why would Poseidon all of a sudden show mercy to the man that blinded his son, didn't kill him, and openly told him his name? Poseidon was never going to spare Odysseus or the fleet regardless of whether he apologized or not. It's only thanks to the bag of wind that Odysseus got his last ship away before they died as well.

"Remember me," is the same thing Odysseus told Polyphemus While the original intent was to kill Odysseus, he decided to instead to let him live with the mistake that caused hundreds of deaths. Yeah, disproportionate retribution is kind of something all the Olympians are known for. Brutal as it is, killing all but a handful of Odysseus's men is pretty on-brand for someone like Poseidon. If it weren't for his desire to see Odysseus suffer that kind of loss, he probably would've just killed everyone and not given him the chance to open the bag.

Think what I like about this one is how *inhuman* Poseidon is. His face as a human is skull-like, a pale brow and hollow cheeks around monochromatic eyes and a beard that frames his lips apart from his jaws, like teeth. And when he shifts into a horse, he moves fluidly, standing like a statue that shatters the laws of motion when he shifts. Poseidon isn't an especially powerful humanoid here. Poseidon is an aspect of reality and fantasy, reminders of death and fear. Trying to dance around him with words means he teaches you that his vows, like water too, can be unyielding.

But as Poseidon said there are 43 left, so how to save those remaining 43 who only live because they're on Odysseus' own ship and Poseidon saved him for last...? By saying/doing something so unexpected Poseidon doesn't have the time to react before they're out. The way he delivers the line is jarring but that, I feel, is because it's intended to be. It needs to make a GOD go "??????" for a long enough moment that the remaining wind can drag them out of immediate reach.

Bathos is used as an intentional anti-climax, a way of immediate subversion to segue into the next part where no clean transition exists. For Odysseus of all characters, it works the best. He's still a soldier. Everyone is dead. His ship is the only one that remains. But HE is still alive and he still has some men. He is an optimistic bastard by design. He remembers what he has, sees Poseidon's hubris as a weakness, then uses the tone shift to confuse the God enough to escape. With Poseidon DECIDING to let him go, with the sinister threat (Which is contained in the musical stings of the piano) that this escape is temporary and that Poseidon won't forget. Tone is carried by the instrumentation as much as the lyrics and their delivery. In comparison to the total piece, there's a more clear transition away from brief triumph to grief. It's only glaring because this is one song out of a series, so there's no continuation. You're condemning a part without the context of the whole. Would it work in a normal play? Probably not, but Musicals don't function the same as plays. They have different rules and standards. So take some time to learn those rules and standards before passing harsh judgement. These words are probably wasted and it will just get countered by semantics, grammatical mistakes, or just calling me a "Fan boy" or whatever like I've seen all around the criticisms that have been confronted. But I figured I'd throw them out there anyways for those who wish to either have a dialogue or see a perspective that goes into detail as to why these things work.

It really clarified that my issue with that line is primarily due to how Odysseus was animated. The gigantic face-splitting grin, mainly. No joke, the entire sequence of Odysseus's crew just screaming "Captain!" over and over while drowning gave me chills. It really highlighted how helpless Odysseus actually is in front of Poseidon, to the point where he wasn't able to even help his own crew and was only able to stay alive because Poseidon wanted him to. Not because of his wit, or his smarts, or anything else Odysseus was known for. Only because Poseidon wanted to gloat. Look at how powerless you are. Look at how your decisions have caused your crew's downfall. Look.

The visual of the baby that Poseidon drops hitting the deck timed with the "You are far too nice" lyric hits so hard. It's clear that Odysseus thinks killing that baby is the worst thing he has ever done, so for Poseidon to call him "nice" and merciful right then is exqusite torture.

I love Odysseus expressions in his “apology”. He is not just smug, he looks to the side just for a second to figure out how to spin the tale & starts playing the part of being contrite without having to actually say sorry & when he’s done he smiles like he just singlehandedly defeated the ocean. Holy fuck this is incredible. I love how free form posideon is with his form, quickly shifting from man to horse to weird eldritch horse. And this is some of the best use of posideon being the God of horses I've ever seen or even thought of. Overall, it's a phenomenal job, and I can't wait for more in the future. Edit: just to gush a bit more about this incredible piece of art, the whole transition from huge posideon into the smaller but still big posideon that drops the baby is just *chefs kiss* capital P Phenomenal. As well as the entire sequence of posideon just fucking up Odysseus by the hair, and the whole seen of him murdering the crew make me want an animated Epic:the musical film so bad.

Yeah, it flows well that the gods take on forms that humans can perceive yet they are still fluid enough to shift forms at the drop of a hat, this is especially so with Poseidon here since it also uses water elements along with the shifting between human and horse forms. Overall this is a very fitting visual to show Poseidon’s wrath towards Odysseus for blinding Polyphemus and leaving him alive.

I love Poseidon’s monstrous forms depicted here. It fluidly combines him being an ocean god and a horse god and it’s just so fucking epic. I especially liked right after “Die.” when he’s killing all of Odysseus’ crew. before Hades entered Greek mythology, Poseidon was in charge of the underworld too. The ocean is a depthless grave filled with creatures human eyes were never meant to see that will forget the names of all its victims.

Any gods associated with the underworld at all were given higher importance than those without underworld connections. Poseidon, being the underworld's king, was thus given top spot, while Zeus' domain of the sky, basically as far away from the underworld as you could get, left him with little authority in the pantheon. Things got shuffled around during the Grecian Dark Ages, and when we got to the other side, Zeus was now at top billing with the epithet Panhelle'nius, basically labelling him as king of everything, and Poseidon was split between his domain of the seas, and Hades as the new underworld king. However, Poseidon's reign of king of the dead wasn't fully forgotten, honored in his title of The Earthshaker.

For people asking why Poseidon seems not to care about Odysseus hurting his son and wishing he’d just killed him, for ancient Greeks a death in battle was a glorious end. If Odysseus killed Polyphemus it would be honorable for him and by extension Poseidon. By leaving him maimed and humiliated, he’s humiliated Poseidon, and for a god that’s the worst disservice you can give them. It’s really weird from a 21st century western point of view, but it’s a pretty accurate depiction of Poseidon as a Greek god

This is one of those amazing animatics where you can rewatch it a dozen times and still find something new to enjoy. A moment that I love is at 1:47: in the brief second before he turns to Odysseus he looks so affectionate towards the baby in his arms - is this a memory of when Polyphemus was a baby? It's a good reminder that Poseidon was actually a decent divine parent compared to most of the pantheon. I also love 2:54, where he literally stops seeing Odysseus as a person. He's closing his heart to all the paperwork he's about to give Hades. Every god Odysseus has talked to so far - Zeus, Athena, Aeolus - has told Odysseus that he must walk a ruthless path. Poseidon, in all his eldritch equine glory, is giving him an object lesson in why he can't have his cake (remain unchanged by his experiences) and eat it too (return home).

⁠@@Shadowblader98Yep that is pretty much right, you have to think that navigation in the Mediterranean Sea, especially in the zone around Ancient Greek territory was very hazardous because of the winds and sea currents that would develop around the islands that were on course and there were no life saving swimming techniques that would help at the time so falling in the ocean was a sure death sentence but the real problem was not death itself as it was pretty much an accepted part of life in their culture, it was the loss or the disfigurement of the body that really scared the Greeks, it was dishonourable to not give the proper funeral to the dead, reason why they usually took time to clean the battle fields too, leaving their dead to rot and being scavenged by the animals (birds and dogs as the Iliad cites if I remember correctly) was a terrible thing to do, but at sea nothing could be saved, the men claimed by it were lost forever

One thing that I like about the artistic depiction here is that when Poseidon asks for an apology, Odysseus seems to try and placate him diplomatically. He is good with his words, he's a tricked the cyclops this way. He seems so confident in his supplication to Poseidon, and that is where Poseidon seems to take offense. This is beautiful. The part that captures me is the smirk on Odyssey's face when he "apologizes" to Poseidon, stating that he was only trying to survive and he "took no pleasure in his pain". Polyphemus likely already told Poseidon of Odysseus's gloating. Poseidon's face clearly depicts his disbelief. This mortal man, with his and his crew's lives on the line isn't taking the situation seriously. He's not showing fear in his apology, and appears to think that he worded it so nicely, so clearly he's safe from harm? Except he wasn't and he lost that smirk real quick. Amazing animation.

I am absolutely speechless. The use of the horse to create this horrifying and beast-like image of Poseidon, the imagery of Poseidon dropping his "son" mirroring Odysseus dropping the infant from the walls of Troy, the depiction of all the men drowning-- this is truly one of if not THE best EPIC animatic I've seen (and trust me, I've binge watched a LOT of them lol). Keep doing what you're doing, man, it's absolutely incredible.

Okay maybe it's just me but is Poseidon drawn at a different frame rate than Odysseus and the crew? He's so fluid--it really shows the idea that he's a god on a different playing field than the rest of them. I've watched this at least fifteen times in the past two days. It's likely, a lot of his scenes are done in a silhouette, which is a lot easier to animate rather than whole detailed line art characters. Especially for the scenes where Poseidon is all watery

I don't know if anyone's mentioned this yet, but I absolutely love the contrast at the start. Odysseus and his men are shown on the ship, meanwhile as soon as Poseidon appears, he takes up the ENTIRE FRAME. It's just such a nice way to show how small they all are, compared to one of the prime gods of the Greek mythos. I mean this one being has complete dominion over the sea, so him swelling over the ship displays that immense power very well.

There is a brutal irony to not having killed the Cyclops after killing Hector's child back in Troy in order to avoid a future fate. Having Posiedon holding a shaow child as he sang that line was a brutal reminder of what Odysseus has already done, a demonstartably even more ruthless action than killing the Cyclops would have been.

​@@ilyte1I see your point. Personally, I think that it means more towards Poseidon's disgust. When he says the line you quoted I believe he is referring to Odysseus trying to be clever. The Gods in Greek mythology never go back on their word. At least not that I can remember. Usually they lay out a deal for the mortal with strict conditions, like with Hades and Orpheus. So, with that said, I think Poseidon genuinely would have let Odysseus go had he actually apologized. I mean, Odysseus is a prideful man, but he's earned it because he is actually clever. But Poseidon knows this. He's watching for it. So when he says "the line between naivety and hopefulness is almost invisible," seems like he's calling Odysseus out for trying to pull one over on him. In a very "You really tried that. With me. After everything I just showed you. I can't tell if you were being hopeful that I wouldn't catch that or are just so naive you don't truly understand the situation you're in." And when Odysseus didn't apologize, after Poseidon clearly laid out the terms of the deal, he followed through with what he said would happen. He sank the ships and drowned most of the men.

I kept trying to figure out why the part with the drowning men screaming "captain" kept sticking out so much. It's because the pattern is incomplete by one. Matching the song, it should've had one more "captain" but it was cut short suddenly like their lives. Great song. Also: Dude, please open your bag BEFORE Posidon kills everyone.
