Och goodness, that’s where I grew up 😊 There’s a churchyard tucked beside the river in Kingussie which has some really old graves in it. John Macpherson, Ruthven barrack master is buried there, along with his children. The stones have incredible lettering on them.

Used to pass this place regulariy on the way to my German Stalker pals at the Invreshie House Hotel at nearby Kincraig, back in the eighties, stunning area. Lighting at night is positively haunting and dramatic. Always meant to have a look round the Barracks but sadly never got around to it. Really enjoyed your video. Used to do battlefield renactments with an 18th Century replica three pounder, RFA Period Uniform the lot. The coat and tricorn hat was surprisingly effective in inclement Highland Weather. The 45 is a particular old hobby. One of the first things you learn about the 45 is that many of The Redcoats were in fact Scottish. The Argyll Militia,The Royal Scots(Pontuis Pilutes Bodyguard) The North British Fusiliers(Ayrshire),Gardiners Dragoons,The Glasgow Militia,The Cameronians, The Black Watch. Add to that Dutch,German, and French Hueganots and The 45 is not so clear cut as it would at first seem. There were English County and Household Regiments there they were by no means alone however. There is a recorded incident at Ruthven of a Sergeant Molloy and a limited number of men defending The Barracks against a Superior Jacobite force when this was I do not know. The Jacobite's later burned the place. Dragoons inccidentaly could function as cavalry or infantry being 'armed to the teeth,' with sword and pistol,as well as musket and bayonet as opposed to cavalry carbine.

I’ve been right by Ruthven Barracks, but it was not a stop on our tour ☹️. My husband has gotten to explore there, though, when he was in the Kingussie area for a Clan MacPherson gathering. Even though I did not get to explore Ruthven, I did stay overnight in Newtonmore, just a wee bit down the A86. And, though it was after regular hours, I had arranged for a private tour of the Clan MacPherson Museum in Newtonmore. That area has a very special meaning for our family.
