Great review. I read this last year. I think based on your review of another Book on Douglass. Eye opening and thought provoking.

Thank you Ben. I appreciate it. This is one of my favorite books. He is a fascinating figure in American history. He is one of my heroes! What he accomplished in his life despite all of the racism that was present, never ceases to amaze me. Have you read this book? I need to read the other two autobiographies. I got all three of them now in a Library of America book, so I have no excuse. I need to get it on the official TBR list! Thanks for watching. Have a great day.

The President and the Freedom Fighter by Brian Kilmeade is another great book on Mr. Douglas.

I have read that one. I agree, it was good. They did a nice job with the book. I actually wrote a book review for my local library on that book. Thanks for watching. Have a great week.

Thank you for your kind words. It is an excellent book, I would argue maybe the best of all the slave narratives. I just got a Library of America book that has all three of Douglass's autobiographies in it and I am excited to read the other two. If this is a topic of great interest to you then go check out David Blight's biography of Frederick Douglass, Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom. It is awesome. Very powerful and well done. You will enjoy it. It's a big book, but don't let that intimidate you because it is very worth the time to read it. Thanks for watching. Have a great day!

Frederick discovers that obtaining education was one of the biggest fears of his slave owners.

You are exactly right. An educated slave was tough to suppress because they could understand more readily what they were missing. Education was the key for everyone then, just as it is today. Thank you for watching.

Thank you. Douglass does an outstanding job retelling his early life. I need to read his other two autobiographies which are a lot more detailed. Thanks for watching. Have a great day.

It was also just so crazy to me that the grandma who worked for that family for generations was in the end just given to strangers who ended up building a hut in the middle of the woods and leaving her there on her own. They could have let her walk away they could have put her on a boat to a city but they left an old lady in the woods to starve to death. The way he told that part of the story was so powerful

Thanks Jacob. I totally agree. It was one of the saddest parts of the book. It was a total disregard for the elderly. As soon as they had lost their value, they were pitched aside and left to die. It makes my heart ache. Thanks for watching. Have a great week.
