In my opinion Book ruyi is one of kind mc she isn't specially genius like zhen huan or yingluo or have the "not like other girls" aura she's intelligent enough and has her own charm and charisma as a leader and a rich lady not to mention her sass and aggressiveness are fun to read 😊

I can't wait for you to dissect Wei Yanwan. She felt like a really poorly written villain in the drama and her reason to hate Ruyi were really unfounded/forced.
@moonstarstories1298 Жыл бұрын
Yeah. Her entitlement/jealousy over Yunche and her gripes with Ruyi made me roll my eyes. I actually much prefer a cunning villain who's opportunistic and can play the Emperor like a fiddle than her scenes when she whines about Yunche and gets upset at Ruyi for confusing reasons.

Now that I’ve seen the first book, Jia’s downfall makes more sense. The novel clearly shows that while Jia is smart and resourceful. She is also incredibly haughty and arrogant and looses sight of the plot she feels that she has won or is winning.
@dramarecaps4217 Жыл бұрын
Exactly what I was thinking. Jia was subltle and deadly in the first half of the drama, so her sudden fall into ridiculousness felt unearned. But book Jia has been like this from the start.
@moonstarstories1298 Жыл бұрын
I have noticed some differences in personality. For example, Jia seems incredibly haughty. Jia's fierce and arrogant in the show, but in the earlier episodes, she's subtler and more of a force behind the scenes, while in the books she's straight up throwing her weight around and being openly disrespectful to the higher-ranked Ruyi.

Interesting how the Ruyi-Arou relationship was explained better in the books. Ruyi keeps drilling Arou about her dangerous behavior but is simply unwilling to give her a real punishment because of their connection. And with the Lianxin situation, Arou is still horrible but unlike in the show, it wasn't completely unprovoked as Lianxin made a comment about Ruyi. In the show, Ruyi was so gentle with Arou that it felt like she was neglecting the issue.

Mei’s baby is way more graphic in the novel and she’s so unlucky for the time. Her child is a hermaphrodite fully formed and the belly is blue due to the poisoning. The child also looks a bit disfigured. To make things worse her and the doctors said it was a prince and the Empress does a mini scheme and later claims it’s a princess when her and Ruyi are comforting Mei. My theory is that stillborn or not, a prince is still higher status so she didn’t want Mei to gain or have a slight chance for power since she replies without hesitation and makes Ruyi lie and back her up.
@dusksunsetio6042 Жыл бұрын
Honestly the novel’s version of the story makes SO MUCH MORE sense than the tv version. The characters actually have reasons to act this way and that instead of just sounding like they just got replaced by a stupider/meaner version.

notes: 1. *Sulian's original name is "Suxin"* (in keeping with the pattern of Imperial Prince Bao's harem having their main ladies-in-waiting have the 心 (xin) character in their name), and the change was obvious because *her name would audibly clash with Suoxin* 2.1. "grew up pampered and is a bit arrogant" are a bit of an understatement; *Qing'ying was a spoiled little бịťçħ* no different than her "Empresses in the Palace" version just because her aunt was the Empress Consort; this is *the main reason why Langhua, Gao Xiyue, & Jin Yuyan (Qian Girls™) deeply hate her* 2.2. "how much has changed in only a few days" also includes obviously *her aunt being abandoned* , hence the Boddhisatva that is drama!Ruyi: with her mountain (main backer) gone, *Qing'ying is on 24/7 survival mode in the Forbidden Palace* 3. the "prince's dormitory" is *Ahgesuo* (阿哥所, aka "Suo'er" (所兒), both literally meaning "princes' place"), which was historically called by that name during Qianlong Era; it was in the next *Jiaqing Era that it became known as Xiefangdian (擷芳殿)* . Its current name is now Nansansuo (南三所) (tbf you mispronounced dormitory as well) 4.1. part of the aunt's dialogue is an oblique reference to Uya Chengbi; she reprimands Qing'ying that *her mother-in-law (Empress Xiaogong'ren) lectured her that basically Ula Nara clanswomen must be Empresses Consort or bust* , which well explains her reasoning and motivations well (and quite possibly way back in "Empresses in the Palace") 4.2. Ruyi's aunt's death is *basically what happened in "Empresses in the Palace"* ; but unlike in both dramas, *the aunt becomes Empress Xiaojingxian* 5.1. lol I still remember the *KEEP IT ON* voiceover you did in the original episode recap 5.2. regarding Ruyi's title -閑 actually has 2 meanings: the "idle" definition is actually the alternate character for 閒 (figuratively *Y/N moon-gazing outside their doors* , i.e. indolence for farmer-peasants but cultured behavior for the scholar-aristocrats) -the other meaning for 閑 is basically with regards to *security/guarding against outside forces* ; as well as an alternate reading for 嫻 itself -嫻 is figuratively *a woman confined within the household* (hence the definition of "elegant/refined/gracious"), which was the ideal stance in most countries (not just East Asia) until just recently 6. Jin Yuyan being "a lady of the Joseon royal family" (朝鮮宗室王女): her "official" background was that *she's a "distant cousin" of the current Queen Mother* . With that logic and the discussions surrounding Jin Yuyan's plotline, it's referencing King Sukjong's mother Queen Myeongseong, ergo an -Andong- Cheongpung Kim clanswoman though *historically Imperial Noble Consort Shujia's family roots were from Uiju, the Joseon-Ming borderlands* ) (I changed the wording because as Ruyi mentioned *Joseon was a semi-autonomous feudal vassal state since its foundation in 1392 and upon formal entry in China's imperial tributary system* ; it was only in 1897 that King Gojong declared independence from China and declared the Korean Empire) 7. more info on Bai Ruiji: 7.1. Langhua only mistakenly skimmed the surface: *Ruyi's mother Lady Langgiya helped Bai Ruiji in the past* (for reasons I am unaware due to not being a native Chinese speaker), and somehow ended up at Nanfang as a _pipa_ player 7.2. "the late emperor [Yongzheng] likes _pipa_ ": the only tie so far to "Legend of Zhen Huan/Empresses in the Palace", as apparently *one of An Ling'rong's seduction skills towards the Yongzheng Emperor was the pipa* 7.3. Viva Ho's casting was truly spot on 8. so that explains why Hailan has difficulty walking during that time...coupled with the fact that they're all wearing flowerpot shoes with the central heel is an absolute nightmare 9. it's hinted that 3rd prince Yongzhang was developmentally delayed at that point; but historically *he had a weak chest compounded further when he contracted tuberculosis from his mother* hence why he was very behind his younger half-brothers

Regarding your point about Joseon and Jin Yuyan: if the novel starts with the Yongzheng Emperor's death, then it's 1735 and the Joseon king is Yeongjo. The queen mother at this time would be Grand Queen Dowager Hyesun (posthumously Queen Inwon), his adoptive mother and Sukjong's third queen (or fourth if you count the deposed Jang Ok-jeong). Both Queen Inwon and her long-dead mother-in-law, Queen Myeonseong (she died in 1684, so 18 years before Queen Inwon entered the palace and 51 years before the novel's timeline), were Kim clanswomen, but neither of them was from the Andong Kim clan; Queen Inwon was from Gyeongju Kim and Queen Myeongseong was from Cheongpung Kim. At this point, Andong Kim had only produced some royal concubines and Munjong's first deposed crown princess, and it will be only during the reign of Yeongjo's great-grandson that they'll get their first queen (and then two more, and the Andong Kims' monopoly on the court through these women-not that they were innocent victims used against their will, particularly the first one, Queen Sunwon-heavily contributed to Joseon's fall). As for Joseon's status, I'd say it was more of an autonomous vassal state than a semi-autonomous one. Neither the Ming nor the Qing ever got involved in their internal affairs.
@盧璘壽로인수6 ай бұрын
@@G.SCmaria 1. oops thanks for correcting me on Queen Myeongseong's clan 2. though Ming did not so much interfere with Joseon affairs... 2.a. *Joseon still had to offer tributes including women to Ming* : Queen Sohye/Dowager Queen Insu's 2 paternal aunts (Han Hwak's sisters) became Yongle & Xuande Emperors' concubines, the former having a strange penchant for Joseon women (rumored Yongle's biological mother was a Joseon woman) 2.b. for 2 centuries *Ming (starting from its founder Hongwu Emperor) refused to recognize King Taejo (Yi Seong-gye) as the founder of Joseon* : erroneously believing "Yi Dan" (Taejo's taboo name after ascending the Dragon Throne) as the son of Yi In-im (an influential pro-Yuan minister during Goryeo's final years), and that "Yi Dan" had killed the last 4 kings of Goryeo (Gongmin, U, Chang, & Gongyang) as well as Yi In-im himself, hence a usurper who obliterated the Royal House of Wang (King Gongmin was assassinated by one of his bodyguards who was also his paramour, King U was seated by Yi In-im himself, only Kings U & Chang were sentenced to death poisoning by Taejo himself, while King Gongyang was assassinated by strangulation) it took until the publication of _Dà Míng Hùidǐan_ (大明會典) in the late 16th century for Joseon scholar-bureaucrats to send numerous petitions addressing the genealogical errata, and Wanli Emperor had to issue a second volume. Joseon ministers lamented wasting time, effort, & money for such non-beneficial partnership, and it happened a few years prior to the Japanese Invasions (1592-1598)

It is interesting how different the book 1 from the drama drama ruyi was well mannered and self yet still playful and chill despite her situation while book ruyi was on 24 survival mode to the point where when the emperor visit her after the cream scheme he comfort and she immediately falls crying in his arms also the reason behind the emperor neglecting ruyi was because he realized how dangerous the situation for her so did it to protect her but little did he knew the common sense for empress and hui (and for other historical cdrama villains 😒) is: how dare they to try to live well can't they just let themselves be bullied and die in silence! (so that was how wan survived for so long) I mean Seriously in the drama it was just obvious jealousy but the book they have that weird obsession their time basically 5% duties 5% everything else 90% plotting against ruyi they try so hard to find a reason to hate her and a ways to scheme against her imagine having all this much of power and use it most of the time to bully others no wonder these two barely lived a decade in qianlong entire reign
