Honestly, sometimes I just feel like you weren't paying attention to the drama at all. The Emperor wasn't always the Emperor. Do you think he has been the Emperor for decades now? When it started, it's literally written in the screen that he JUST became Emperor. He wasn't even Crown Prince or his father's favorite. Why would you think the Empress is the one that chose to marry the Emperor? He wasn't Emperor then, he was a prince. And there is no such thing as a monogamous marriage in this period in China. Men were expected to have consorts and concubines. The ones that didn't were the odd one out.

The Empress also wanted to embarass her own niece as she didn't want to become a concubine for the Third Prince and thought very lowly of second wives (The Empress was a second wife), so she punished her by marrying her off to a "prince without future" as a second wife.

Also, there were MANY instances of the Empress pitting Lingrong and Zhen Huan against each other. That time when Lingrong was waiting outside the palace was one of them also

On rewatch, I think the reasons JinXiu and Fang Momo became targets for YingLuo are A) Fang Momo stole YingNing's possessions after she was killed, and probably would never have said anything about it, and B) JinXiu's attempts to get YingLuo killed came at a point where she had no real leads on what had happened to YingNing, meaning that if YingLuo died, no one would avenge her sister (or even believe there was anything to avenge), and she wasn't about to let that happen.

Not really divorced tho. A concubine becaming a nun was rather common, especially after the Emperor died. This also happened in Europe with royal families. It was common for a Queen to "retire" to a nunnery. The word of the Emperor is law, so if he let her, as he did, she wasn't doing anything illegal, and she always put it in a way of "doing a historical observation" or "assisting in a family matter" so the Emperor wouldn't be threaten by her possibly becaming an Empress Wu. Sure, I do think that Hua Fei missed power, but I think she missed the Emperor more. I think she's one of the only women that actually truly loved him by the end. I think the Empress was actually more devoted and obcessed to her title than she was in love with the Emperor.

I don't really like Ruyi, I think the acting and plot is much inferior, and all the very clear plastic surgery the actors did also takes me out, because it's supposed to be a period drama. I saw a lot of chinese netizens complaining about it too.

One big difference between Ruyi and Fuca Langhua is simple: Ruyi is reacting to Jia's attacks on her, Langhua acted to destroy potential challengers, usually before they did anything remotely wrong or even offensive. Also, Ruyi's "punishment" to Jia is incredibly light: A promotion, and a few days of aural pain from the earrings. Given that Jia's antics could have seen Ruyi lose her head - and DID see her friend crippled for life - that's an incredibly light punishment. That it's punishment at all makes it stand out, but it is in no way proportional to Jia's offenses against Ruyi. And if Jia had been smart enough to let it lie, Ruyi would have considered the matter closed.

Actually, Yunzheng could rest reasonably assured that the next Emperor WILL be his son. After all, Hongli's parentage is not in question. And this suits Zhen Huan just fine, since she's ridiculously jaded about palace life, and wants better for her kids. And I really think Zhen Huan's feelings for the Emperor were at least a little ambivalent, even at the very end - if her whisper of "Si Lang" and her closing his eyes after he died mean anything, her hatred for him was, even after all that had happened between them, not entirely unmixed with old tenderness.

When Yixiu married Yunzheng, he was still the Kangxi Emperor's Fourth Prince - and not especially favoured to take the throne when his father died. So, actually, Yixiu *did* pick a husband whom it would've been OK to only have one wife and a passel of kids with. It was later that he got interested in the throne, in the Kangxi Emperor's final years.

YiXiu could have adopted 4th Prince as an "act of benevolence", thus gifting herself a potential heir beholden solely to her. That she did not do this is a good way for the writers to show that - for all her low cunning - Ula-Nara Yixiu is fundamentally not a terribly intelligent woman. All of her power and standing rests upon the Emperor's oath to her late sister Chenyuan, and she seems fundamentally incapable of (a) recognising that, and/or (b) developing her own sources of power. Patronage would be one - of all the harem, the Empress (only!) had a limited right to involve herself in matters of state without the Emperor's express invitation, and she could have used that to build a powerful, unobtrusive faction; one that would be silent on 99% of issues, but when the topic of the Crown Prince comes up, suddenly rears up and speaks as one. Intra-harem patronage would be another - become the 2nd-best friend to all but a handful of concubines - that is to say, Hua-fei and her followers. Adopt & develop her own potential Crown Prince (above), especially since there's already at least one senior, motherless Prince. Instead, she left Hongli to rot at the Summer Palace. Finally, she could have ENCOURAGED junior (only) Attendants & Companions to give birth to children - with their mothers being of such low status, all involved would consider it a privilege and a favour for Her Majesty to adopt their kids, giving her a potentially endless succession of Crown Prince candidates - plus marriage-brides, and credit for constantly supplying the Emperor with new bedroom companions. Yixiu had so many ways to improve her situation - even barren - that wouldn't have hurt a single other person. But she's Yixiu...
