Does the Emperor BLOCK OUT anything he doesn’t want to hear? Because Yongqi literal last words were to forgive Ruyi and the Emperor still believes that Ruyi was abusing him. It’s possible that Yongqi wanted to keep a secret if that was the case but do you think it would be his last words? It’s clear that the Emperor has a narrative and he doesn’t even question or think twice about things that don’t fit his narrative. 🙄 Anyways poor fifth prince. Notes: -IRL, Yongqi did actually have a recorded mistress from the Hu clan who he had a daughter with, alongside a mistress from the Ru clan, a ce fujin from the Socoro clan (who birthed his only son Mianyi, who he calls out for on his deathbed), and a di fujin/princess consort, of the Sirin-Gioro clan. In the drama, Lady Sirin-Gioro doesn't really appear much; as her and Yongqi were an arranged marriage, they mostly keep to themselves. Posthumously, he was titled '榮純親王/Prince Rongchun of the 1st Rank, with 'rong' meaning 'glory, honor' and 'chun' meaning 'pure'. -In the drama, they refer to Yongqi's disease as 'bone cellulitis', which isn't entirely correct: he died of bone tuberculosis. Even though TB is usually thought of as affecting the lungs, it can actually spread to other parts of the body if left untreated, and in that time period, it would be considered a death sentence, as there weren't any effective treatments before antibiotics. Ruyi is also diagnosed with TB, which opens up the possibility that she may have caught it from Yongqi, which makes things even sadder. -The bootlickers are Lu Changzai, Wu Changzai, Kui Daying, Rui Guiren, and Qing Pin (although she's less active than the others and refuses to hurt other consorts). So yeah, nobody important---I had to go to the Wikipedia page to get their names. -Ling's worst mistake was going after Yongqi and Lady Ulanara; Ruyi's biggest flaw is that she won't do much to defend herself, but when it's someone she cares about, she and Hailan will absolutely go after them (see: Suoxin, Yunche, etc). If she'd left them alone, she might have actually been able to outlast Ruyi and rule the harem without her interference. -Ruyi's words when she learns of her diagnosis always kill me: she hears that, with treatment, she might last another 3-4 months, and she replies '3 or 4 months is enough'. She has nothing to lose and everything to gain now, and she knows it. -I believe Hongli confiscated Ruyi's imperial seal and the decree promoting her as Empress. Not many seals survive---most were destroyed after their user's death---but there are some that survive from Empress Dowager Cixi and Empress Xiaoke (the last Empress of the Qing); they are made of jade and gold, respectively, and feature a double-headed dragon adorned with tassels. This seal would have given her the ability to officially issue written decrees, should she want to.

In the novel, Muping is not as closely affiliated with Yanwan's group and after Ruyi's death, joins Hailan and the Mongolian consorts in undermining Yanwan's authority to the point that neither Yanwan or her posse can stop them (and both her and Meiruo get promoted to noble consort soon after the incidents involving Yanwan's kidnapping of Jingyuan (and disrespecting both the empress dowager and Mongolian consorts in the process) and trying to influence Yongyan to be disloyal to his father in favor of her, which again further decreases Yanwan's influence in the harem).

Ep. 81-82 notes (WIP): 1.1. *Ruyi never saw anyone else* while on her way back to the Forbidden City 1.2. Barin Meiruo actually had to coerce Fulong'an (one of Fuheng's sons, married to 4th princess ; Yuhu was last seen during the Empress Xiaoxian Eulogies 1. Fuheng & Jingse had a discussion wherein Jingse questioned how Wei Yan'wan knew what was going on, and Fuheng then aired his own misgivings about Wei Yan'wan, to which Jingse agreed; *while they dislike Ruyi, they mistrust Wei Yan'wan more* 2. much of Zhen Huan's dialogue is absent, but the core message remains (questioning Qianlong's intent of deposing Ruyi + reminding him of Shunzhi Emperor + you will regret it) 3.1. Ruyi did get down the carriage and meet Hailan, though Rongpei urged her to call Ruyi "主子" instead 3.2. Jinzhong was there and took away Sanbao and the rest of the servants on the spot 3.3. Hailan saw Ruyi's dropped fragrance sachet as she was returning to Yanxigong Palace 4.1. soon enough Qianlong ordered the withdrawal of Ruyi's "books and treasures" (冊寶) containing all her titles (Consort Xian, Noble Consort Xian, Imperial Noble Consort, Empress Consort of Qing) 4.2. Jingse then tells Qianlong her discussion with her uncle Fuheng: how Wei Yan'wan knew Ruyi was having an argument with Qianlong and actually fetched her as "support"; hence Qianlong immediately began to be suspicious of Wei Yan'wan 1. Sanbao and Yunzhi being taken away happened later on, but at least they went to pro-Ruyi masters: *Sanbao went to 12th prince Yongji* (by extension with Hailan) while *Yunzhi went to Jin Wan'yin* 2.1. Ruyi was indeed under palace arrest, but *nowhere was it proclaimed that Ruyi cannot have visitors* 2.2. Ruyi was in the middle of her Buddhist devotions when Hailan came, and this is when *Hailan showed the ruby ring and urged Ruyi to fight back one last time* 2.3. Hailan was the first to see Ruyi's tubercular coughing 3.1. the dream with Ruyi's aunt happened after the conversation with Hailan 3.2. in the original novel, Empress Xiaojingxian's berating words were much harsher, but the climax of their conversation was *Ruyi asked "did you have peace and happiness during your time" and Empress Xiaojingxian kept silent until she vanished from Ruyi's dreamscape* . in the drama, Ruyi then says "I wish that Ula Nara clanswomen will never enter the Imperial Harem" which was used in the drama's theme song "沉香流年" official MV 1.1. the flowers were *sent every 3 days, and reflected the seasons* : _yulan_ magnolias in spring, white lotus in summer, chrysanthemum in autumn, plum blossom in winter 1.2. the incense is *hawthorn* , which had a *clean scent and smoke-free, sent every 15th* 1.3. Lingzhi noticed that *Yongqi's offerings weren't high class* , which *Ruyi interpreted as a compromise with Qianlong* 2. it was Ruyi who immediately understood the foreboding implications of the 榮親王 title, and immediately prayed for Yongqi's safety and well-being 3. Qianlong *never made any intention of setting anyone as Crown Prince* at the time (despite *Qianlong already in his mid-50's* )

9:17 I just don’t understand why Yanwan has a PERSONAL grudge against Ruyi! Ruyi has done nothing to harm her and didn’t treat her badly. That’s seriously my least favorite thing about Yanwan. If she was just a cunning, ambitious and ruthless woman who learned that the only way to carve out a place in the harem is to be merciless I can get on board with. But her attitude towards Ruyi and Yunche are just absurd. Why does she expect Yunche to be loyal to her after all that she’s done to him? Why does she expect anything out of him when she’s made it clear that she will choose power over him. She’s so entitled, thinking she can use him like a tool but he should love him. It’s straight up delusional. It loses the respectability of her character. Yes, I have more respect for a ruthless murderess that owns up to fact that she sacrifices people for power and her rationale is “I’m doing this to secure my future”. Because even though that’s evil it feels less skin crawlingly disgusting than her entitlement (which went so far as attempting r*pe, by the way).

I mean, the drama never mentions this but I will, Ruyi let her suffer under Jia for years because she was bitter that she dumped Ling Yunche. That's enough for me to understand Yanwans hatred and desire to destroy her life. As for the Yunche stuff, yeah that's drama only, where Yanwan is far more pathetic and fierce than she is in the book.

@@imogencrusader6306 I was annoyed at Ruyi for that too. She should’ve helped Yanwan regardless. It’s just not enough for Yanwan to do all that she did to her. I have heard about how Yanwan is much more fierce and assertive in the books. I would like to see that version of her, tbh. I almost like Yanwan’s resourcefulness and proactivity, but I don’t like how mopey and entitled she can be in drama.

@@imogencrusader6306 Hm? I didn't get that feeling at all. YunChe asked RuYi for help saving YanWan. RuYi was bitter at first, but seeing that YunChe still loved her, decided to help. RuYi tried to get YanWan away from Jia, but realized that the more she showed she wanted to save YanWan, the more Jia would want to hurt her. So she told YunChe that they should wait. Also, at this point the empress was in power (and loving how uncomfortable this was making RuYi) so she would never have approved any kind of transfer for Yanwan. RuYi makes a ton of mistakes, but in that case I really think she did all that she could.

Ep. 83-84 notes (WIP): according to extant historical records, 5th prince Yongqi *only had 2 surviving children* .1. Mian'yi - only surviving son by his secondary consort Lady Socoro, later became Prince Rong (榮郡王) .2. a daughter - later married a Borjigit clan member from the Alxa (Alashan) tribe 1. Ruyi's end-stage TB diagnosis happened *before 5th prince Yongqi's death* , during the flower & incense deliveries (I headcanon she was infected by Su Luyun, since in RL Imperial Noble Consort Chunhui, 3rd prince Yongzhang, & 4th princess all died from TB) 2.1. Ruyi found out about *Yongqi's critical state in the first lunar month* , but it was only *2 months later that Ruyi was allowed to visit the dying Yongqi* 2.2. Yongqi had been confined at Chonghuagong Palace and only Hu Yunjiao was inside the sick room burning incense, and she was quite rude to Ruyi on first greeting (before being ushered out by her maid servant) 2.4. This would be their *first meeting since the Haircut™* as well as their *final interaction in life* 2.5. amidst the mourning Hu Yunjiao forced herself and *accused Ruyi in the same tone* of mainly *the Ling Yunche affaire* (actually a bare reference, "things he shouldn't have seen") and *instigating against Yongqi* ; then and there Hu Yunjiao committed *śụıćįđə by head banging* (Qianlong later posthumously raised her to _cefujin_ rank) 3. Ruyi asked *Yexin to investigate Hu Yunjiao* 4.1. after a four-month timeskip, *Xiangjian only found out Ruyi was dying was one of Wei Yan'wan's Morning Greetings™* where the sycophants were cooing on 17th (and youngest) prince Yong'lin: Imperial Concubine Jin referred to Ruyi as a "deposed Empress" and Xiangjian sparred "With what decree?", Jin bit back that she's dying anyway and Xiangjian all but ran and forced herself to Yikun'gong Palace 4.2. Xiangjian saw Hailan kneeling on the ground begging Ruyi to be treated by Jiang Yubin so that Suoxin won't worry, and *Ruyi only dismissed her, saying that she would be at ease if Hailan took care of herself* 5.1. Wei Yan'wan went to Yikun'gong Palace under the pretense of health concerns, even bringing ginseng to match the alibi 5.2. *Wei Yan'wan and Ruyi verbally sparred for the last time* , where Wei Yan'wan revealed that *Hu Yunjiao was her pawn and that it was she that intensified Yongqi's illness* 5.3. Ruyi even prodded Wei Yan'wan about her ambitions for the Phoenix Throne, and just frustrated Wei Yan'wan for the last time by saying "You have never defeated me" and "Me and you, it's all up to the Emperor. I'm so £ụćкįñ9 tired of this șħıţ" 5.4. Wei Yan'wan just laughed as she left, satisfied with her own power, even prodding Chunchan on some potential way to deal with Ruyi at a later time 5.5. at the same time Wei Yan'wan didn't see Consort Ying & 7th princess Jing'yuan looking at them in disgust; they were ordered by Ruyi to come to Yikun'gong Palace 6.1. after Wei Yan'wan left, *Ruyi burned an old embroidered handkerchief that appears to have been from Ling Yunche* (most probably in exchange for the boots), as it was kept safely; she thanked him for it and *hoped to meet him again safe and happy in the next life* ; Rongpei then threw the ashes in the courtyard 6.2. Ruyi then asked Rongpei for a dagger and after asking if Yongji would be safe, *stabbed herself in the chest* , and in her final moments her mind seemed to present her with *a vision of a lush greenery and a smiling man among the flowers waiting for her* (his identity is not specified, but the mention of tung flowers suggest this might be Ling Yunche's spirit waiting for her, as it was previously mentioned that there were tung trees in his childhood hometown) 6.3. Rongpei noticed *Ruyi facing the sky, interpreting it as dying with many grievances* ; without another moment *she held Ruyi's embroidery scissors and slashed her throat, her last words being "I'll accompany you..."* 6.4. Hailan came in too late 7.1. *Qianlong heard the news through Jinzhong* , noticing he wasn't the least sad; he even *dismissed the new concubine he was bedding* (the girl even complained *Ruyi chose to die on the eve of Ghost Festival* ) 7.2. Qianlong ordered *12th prince Yongji as chief mourner while Consort Ying was in charge of the funeral* , and at the same time *upgraded Xiangjian to Consort status and placed Yongji & Hailan under her care* ; he secretly ordered Jinbao to *recall Liyu back* from Yuanming'yuan/(Old) Summer Palace 7.3. Qianlong later mused on why *Ruyi was wearing the bead rose flower zan hairpin* as part of her eternal shroud

Wow thank you so much for summarizing all the main points from the book! That's so intense how Ruyi just died like that... and while I understand that she did it because she was done with the Emperor and royal life, she also wanted to lay suspicion on her final interaction with her archenemy - Wei Yanwan (in hopes to get her investigated bc why would Ruyi kill herself after Yanwan shortly leaves, right?) That's so sweet, I love that Ruyi may have saw Ling Yunche right before her death. They're definitely soulmates/kindred spirits and I love them so much ♥ I also wonder if the man she saw could've been Hongli when he was much younger, and maybe she was imagining a life they could've have, if they weren't tied to royalty. (I personally like the Ling Yunche vision more haha) BRO JINGZHONG IS STILL ALIVEEEEE IN THE BOOK???? I love that Han Xiangjan was promoted to take care of Yongji and Hailan. She, along with the other Mongolian consorts have usch a strong family background that when they're all aligned together, they're unbreakable. Even Wei Yanwan can't do anything about it and it makes it maybe harder(?) for her to try and scheme/hurt Hailan and Yongji because Xiangjan has the power of her maiden clan + the emperor's favor. I just love how (for once) Hongli used his mind to do the rational thing BUT WHY DOES HE DO THIS AFTERRRR RUYI DIES?? 😢

I hope he, Langhua, Xiyue, Yuyan and Yanwan are stuck in the afterlife together, unhappy and aware that none of them really actually give two sh*ts about each other.

In the novel, Jin Yuyan's body is swapped with some random woman (probably a maid or other servant?) because Qianlong doesn't want her in his crypt and thus in his afterlife. Ruyi is buried with Chun, so they get to be peaceful tea-companions at least. I do so greatly appreciate the mental image of Empress Langhua and Noble Consort Hui having to put up with a) each other, and b) a random commoner & fucking Yanwan forever more. Definitely *not* the imperial upper class afterlife party they were expecting!!

sometimes empress apologist xD I feel that though, the Ruyi Royal Love Empress was a damn near character assassination, and I feel the need to defend her all the time too. I'm also gonna stand up a smidge for Yunjao here, because while she did keep running her mouth, I think she truly did love the 5th prince. You can't live and have sex with someone for literal years and feel nothing, which i swear is the point of almost all harem dramas ever, and she clearly *has* come to love her husband given she couldn't deal the active fatal blow towards him. She's still a villain, but let's remember she was prepped and primed by Yanwan (god i can't beleive this drama has me turning against her ;-;) , she didn't just wake up one day with no motive and decide to kill the prince and she only agreed before she met and lived with him for years. You know who I don't have sympathy for here? Hailan. She's over there sobbing "My son! My beloved son!" when we know for a fact she literally disliked him because he shared appearance similarities to his father. And, you know, the whole history of using him as a pawn that all but guaranteed he would die young and early before his prime. I understand she probably did love him in her own way, but the drama's not done enough to show that, and so i'm far angrier about Hailains reaction to her sons death than Yunjao who at this point is just looking to die and be with her husband before Yanwan cuts off the medicine for not doing her job xD And that's my unpopular take on this episode! I thouroughly enjoyed hearing your take as well though

I felt as bad for Hailan when Yongqi died as I felt bad for Lvyun when Yonghuan died. Both seemed sad over their princes dying, but you can't help but feel it is a little hypocritical knowing they didn't treat them good, especially compared to other princes (Yongzhang in Lvyun's case and Yongji in Hailan's). It feels like they felt guilt for the way they treated their sons (especially Lvyun). I think Hailan seemed way sadder because of what's mentioned in the first reply. She has lost someone she thought would be a great asset to Ruyi, so because of her extreme devotion she was devastated. But I was still shocked to how strongly she cried. Had the drama intended to show more of her love towards Yongqi before it was cut ? However, and I'm a Hailan fan so I'm biased. I haven't lost my sympathy for her nor do I think very badly of her. That was very frustrating to see the way she treated Yongqi at times, slapping him because he felt scared that he's loose Ruyi's love once Yongji grew up (like bitch what???). I think tall of it is just a product of harem life and its consequences... The only reason Yongqi exists is exactly because of this : Hailan was pressured into playing the harem game and getting the emperor's attention. Her devotion to Ruyi only grew deeper after each scheming against Ruyi. She doesn't have the strongest family background, so the only thing she could have relied on was her son, and by then... she was already in the game too deep. This is not to say she couldn't be blamed. She has a lot of faults and wronged Yongqi so much. Yongqi truly deserved so much better. He's the only one we can fully feel sorry for. Being used all of his life as a pawn for his royal mother, to die in a scheme that targeted her, yet still being all throughout a nice and talented boy. Fuck Yunjao, fuck Yanwan, fuck the emperor and fuck Hailan's parenting (on its emotional aspect).

You know, when I was doing LOZH, I knew going in that I had a bias against HuanBi and tried to reel myself in and listen to arguments for her. I still hate her though. Years later, even just seeing her face makes me upset. YunJiao is that kind of character for me. Even if I could understand logically some of the arguments for her, I just can't accept them and they don't move me at all. No one forced her to do anything. She is one of the rare people in this world who had the power to control her fate, and she chose to kill her loving husband because someone told her that his adopted mother had wronged him. When she had a chance at the last minute to call it off and at least not cause him any more pain after he died, she still went through with it. And then ON TOP OFF ALL THAT SHE FEELS SORRY FOR HERSELF. I just can't. I cannot forgive her, or understand her, or want anything but the worst for her. But same, it's nice reading your take as well lol

I would say she had some scheming up her sleeve too. She approached Jingse during Yongqi's memorial to nudge her to spy on Yanwan's way of raising Yongyan, which led to Yongyan being taken away and the final straw for Yanwan to lose her trust in Chunchan and attempt to kill her, blowing Chunchan's loyalty to bits. Chunchan is like the star witness in the final confrontation scene and Ying enlisting Jingse's help is one of the big keys to that. It's also significant that it was Ying out of anyone else who could talk to Jingse, bc I think Jingse still hates Ruyi but will at least listen to any of the Mongolian consorts (of which Ying is the most important).

Poor fifth prince, he was a good boy :( But in more pleasant news that demon eunuch has died :D (thanks Yanwan for your one good deed) The scene in which Ruyi finds out that she has a short time to live is very interesting, clearly she is determined to end the threat that is Ling but to a certain extent she seems happy? relieved? And it's very understandable considering all that she had to endure but it's so sad to think that her life has reached a point where death may be her only chance to be free... Agh I always found it very silly that the emperor so easily believed what the fifth prince's concubine said against Ruyi considering the prince's last words! When I saw that scene I was almost convinced that the emperor just wanted any excuse to justify his treatment of Ruyi. Nobody can be stupid enough to believe that, it just doesn't make sense. Can i make you a question? (if possible), I know that the relationship between the fifth prince and Hailan in the books is not very good due to the clear preference she has for Ruyi (in the series this issue is somewhat softened) soo how did Hailan reacted to the prince's death? did it hurt her? Or did she only care about it to the extent that it might affect Ruyi? Thanks and excellent job as always!

I think a big part of why Yunjao is so instantly believed is both because the emperor is so biased against Ruyi, but also, before the investigation it looks as though she's using her life to report the information. Killing herself before Ruyi or Hailan could retaliate and have her tortured which....was a big thing back then. But mostly the emperor is determined to hate Ruyi at this point xD

I suppose exactly because they don't have a good relationship, Hailan isn't mentioned much in this part. When JinBao rushes in to tell RuYi the news, he says: “荣亲王沉疴已重,愉妃小主哭求了皇上很久,皇上才允许娘娘去见荣亲王最后一面。” "The prince is seriously ill. Consort Yu cried and begged the emperor for a long time to allow you to see him for the last time." So I guess when she got the news, her first thought was that RuYi should see him It's mentioned that Hailan has been taking care of him, but she isn't there when RuYi goes to see him. The next time we see Hailan, she is kneeling in front of RuYi's palace trying to get her to get treatment for her illness. So yeah, seems her son's death did not affect her too much, and she remains single-mindedly devoted to RuYi's cause

We know they’re suffering but we don’t get to see it like no I wanted to have some episodes where yeah it really shows it not some scenes. But more then that I wanted to see Ruyi’s sisters and her son I didn’t want to focus on the emperor 😒 I also wanted to see Wei Yanwan’s followers get some type of smack down like you just know after her downfall they’re all running around trying to climb up the ranks but the higher consorts are all pro Ruyi and I don’t believe for a second any of them would give the time or day to any of those snakes. I would be such an asshole like “Oh weren’t you rocking with Yanwan? Now you want to latch onto me? Don’t even breathe in my direction.” 😂

At least with some of Yanwan's followers like Consort Qing and Noble Lady Rui, if the drama still follows real history with them, they die before Yanwan herself is killed off (the real Imperial Noble Consort Qinggong dies in 1774 and Noble Lady Rui dies in 1765 while Empress Xiaoyichun dies in 1775) and even those that survive her like Noble Lady Lu and Noble Lady Wu die before Qianlong himself passes the throne to Jiaqing (Noble Lady Lu dies in 1788 and Noble Lady Wu dies in 1781, Qianlong abdicates the throne to Jiaqing in 1795). Following real history, none of Yanwan's posse of sycophants survive before the end of the drama (excluding Consort Jin in the novel, who lives till the Daoguang emperor's reign, but at that point, she's been rendered infertile by the emperor and will eventually be dying alone as Qianlong's last consort). Of course, it would have been satisfying to see how their final fates are handled but the drama skips over the period of time between Yanwan's death and Qianlong's death so we don't know what happens in the years before the drama's ending. And yes, I think it is also a big missed opportunity in not delving into what happens in the drama with Ruyi's family and the rest of her friends in the harem.

I was a little upset at Ruyi for completely giving up on the people in her life, specially her children. She is so laser focused on her love and loyalty to the emperor that when it finally truly falls apart, it seems she doesn't care about anything, even when she takes action later, it is to open his eyes and achieve 'justice' for those wronged by YW, but this does not help the living, ignoring or pushing them away is too little help, the most she did was give her son to the ED but what about the lives of all those who served her loyally and got sent out of her palace :/. Yes she ran out to see 5th Prince but why wait for an emergency to take action? She still has some power to make positive impact and yet chooses not to use it even at the end. I still stand by her though, but she could have done more if she let go of depression and made a plan to be sent to the summer Palace or something.

Most hated characters are the emperor, Princess Jingse and Consort Ling. They’re… just… not the best written characters in the show to say the very least. I mean I’m sure they’d be more well rounded and better written in the original novel. Like Consort Ling was very hardworking to catch up on literature and skills and cynically helped a lot of people to get them on her side. Jingse should have been cut from the show, what tf is even her purpose lol. When Consort Ling was already at super villainess that can get away with everything level at that part of the show already. Then they got Princess Jingse *conveniently* flipped on Consort Ling for the stupidest reason just right before the finale.

The emperor contradicts himself every two seconds and is giving emotionally unstable. The voice acting also made him look goofier

In the drama we see them go bonk! and immediately die with a theatrical single drop of blood slowly trailing down their face, but I always figure it is meant to illustrate the more realistic severe concussion with brain swelling & brain bleed, whiiiiiiich in ye olden days of yore was pretty much a death sentence. No need to show the person lingering for a day or three, unresponsive in a coma, before they eventually die. It's much neater and tidier (and quicker) to just do the dramatic blood drip and declare them dead.

Qianlong and Yanwan just don't stop with their asshole actions. At least Yunjiao is dead and Yanwan is going to be following her soon as Hailan and co. target her but I can't feel satisfied since the emperor himself ultimately doesn't suffer any serious repercussions. He realizes his wrongdoings in the series and novel but I really wish he would have died as miserably as his father did, not only alone but also having his misdeeds thrown right back at his face by people who were wronged by him and are anticipating his death.
