2:52 Not me crying while editing this smh how does this drama manage to gut me no matter how many times I watch it 5:16 to be clear, she stays imperial noble consort until her death (9 years after RuYi's), but since her son became the emperor, she posthumously got the empress title 6:14 I just gave myself whiplash rewatching that, sorry it was so abrupt lmao 6:42 Nah I lied it's definitely YunChe second, Rong 3rd. I think I had just watched Rong lay some truth on the emperor at the time and was momentarily swayed 😂 7:34 Was so surprised to see so many votes for the emperor yesterday! Audacity to me screams "who do you think you are??" Or doing something bold as if there are no consequences. And for the emperor, I hate to say it but there literally are no consequences- is it still being bold when you know that you can do whatever you want with impunity?😅 Mei though from the moment she was introduced had me putting my hand on my chest like "excuse me?"🤔 No mom award because my mom did not make it through this one. She asked me in good faith if things were going to get better for RuYi (around the cold palace era) and I couldn't lie to her in good conscience 😂 8:59 I promisseeeee you you cannot be more disappointed in me than I am in myself. Of course, it's nothing to do with his character, I hate him as much as the next guy but.... I don't know what happened. He got me 🤷

I think you made one small mistake. The soup that the servants were feeding Wei wasn't the same poison that the emperor gave her the first time. I watched those episodes a couple of times only to find out that they were giving her mushroom soup using the same mushrooms she's been feding to 12th prince. When I first saw Wei all old in dark clothes in the bed and then on the floor, for a moment I thought she was Baba Yaga. She did look like a witch in her old age. And I think this was the author's opinion why when her body was dugged up she had high level of poison that she looked like she was buried the day before. They say it's because she had a hard time sleeping after giving birth to so many kids which I call BS. My mom's reasoning is if the Emperor loved her so much that she popped out 7 to 8 kids, why wasn't she empress when she was alive? It wasn;'t until her son became emperor that she got that title which was WIDELY unpopular at the time since the woman had to be alive to be given that title. When one is dead it's under empress dowager. So imagine the court's and the people's outrage when that happened. But then again the REAL son of Wei wasn't a good king to begin with. Especially during the drug wars.

If you pay close attention, many character tropes from Zhen Huan are in this drama: the empress that was losing her powers to a consort (Ruyi and her aunt), the forbidden romance between the protagonist and another man, the consort that didn’t want to join the harem and was unruly (Rong and the other woman that cut her veins after Yongzhen died), the glamorous villain (Jia and Hua). Also, I love how Ruyi referred to all the dead consorts by their name. She’s not thinking of them as women with a status and the emperor’s women. She’s now seeing those women as they are: humans too. She even wished she could drink tea with all of them. Ruyi died in peace after all. She’s not the typical harem protagonist that goes from low-ranking concubine to high-ranking consort through scheming. She’s even willing to forgive all those women and goes with no regrets. I doubt that most of the scheming consorts will die like her: from the Empress Dowager, to Hailan and Yanwan ❤

Notes: The fates of everyone else, IRL: -Zhen Huan: final title 'Empress Dowager Chongqing', outlived most of her son's harem, died at 85. -Yu: final title 'Noble Consort Yu', lost favor after her son's death, lived to be 78 -Wan: final title 'Noble Consort Wan', longest surviving consort of Qianlong (lived to be 91!) -Qing: final title 'Imperial Noble Consort Qinggong', raised Yongyan, who later became the Jiaqing Emperor, lived to be 50. -Ying: final title 'Noble Consort Ying', raised Yonglin and Jingyuan, became roommates with Wan, lived to be 69 (nice). -Rong: final title 'Consort Rong', continued to be one of the Emperor's favorites until her death at 53. My personal picks for the awards: Dum-Dum Award: Korchin Eyinzhu, Consort Yu! Seriously, you got yourself locked up on *three* seperate occasions and never learned anything. Smarty-pants Award: Chen Wanyin, Noble Consort Wan, for staying the hell out of everyone's business and actually surviving this series as a result! Favorite Character Award: Keliyete Hailan, Noble Consort Yu! I have a soft spot for people whose devotion to their loved ones is so great that they're willing to do morally dubious things for them. (Second place is split between Ying and Rong). Hardest Worker Award: Split between the entire palace ceramics department! Lotta teacups, dishes, vases, and various other fragile objects broken in this series. You deserve a raise and a vacation, guys. (Second place goes to the eunuchs in charge of carrying the sedan chairs. That's gotta suck.) Best Actress Award: Zhou Xun, no disagreements here. You go girl!!! Audacity Award: Madam Wei! You called the Emperor 'darling son-in-law', lady. The *emperor*. Purple Reign Award: Aisin-Gioro Yongqi, Prince Rongchun! Again, no disagreements here! Favorite Type of Scene Award: The 'having a family banquet but Some Drama comes up' scenes! Runners up are split between 'two highly-ranked consorts verbally sparring in a way that requires you to have a Chinese dictionary on hand' and 'ooo someone I dislike is getting *punished*' Hottest Bachelorette in the Office: Ulanara Ruyi, the Step-Empress! Seriously, something about Zhou Xun's voice just causes me to melt into a puddle, every time. Hottest Bachelor in the Office: Li Yu! The 'lawful good' variant of Jinzhong. Actual analysis: -Ruyi and her aunt pretty much had highly similar polar opposite arcs. Both were step-empresses, both were confined in their palaces towards the end of their lives, and both still remained empress on death despite their real power being taken away. The difference is that Yixiu clung to her empress title at the cost of everything else, while Ruyi was willing to let it go for what really mattered. -It really strikes a chord with me that, in the end, Ruyi's final act is to dream about making peace with all her sisters---even those that wronged her. She was able to rise above her own jealousy, anger and grief to recognize that they were all victims of circumstance and the patriarchal society they lived in; the real enemy wasn't each other, but the men who controlled them. All she wanted was to be with the Emperor and watch her children grow up happy and healthy---the bare minimum she could've expected of her life as a married woman. -The fact that Ruyi gives Rongpei a seat after all this time---being able to sit in a palace mistress' presence would've been a huge honor for a servant, let alone being allowed to drink tea with them. The act of sharing a table and a pot of tea would imply that all participants were of similar, if not equal, social standing, so the fact that Ruyi encourages Rongpei to do so is groundbreaking. The cups and pot they're using also appear to be fairly plain, unglazed ceramic, rather than the fancy china they normally use. Near the end, she also uses tea metaphors to subtly nudge her towards a new job: 'The tea is faint'='I'm about to die'. 'Go get some new tea and switch the pot'='Go find a new mistress to serve'. Sadly, Rongpei doesn't take her advice, and commits suicide to join Ruyi in the afterlife. -At Ruyi's funeral, Rong says that they shouldn't be sad for her, as she 'should be with her youthful lover now'. This is a callback to what Ruyi told her: she once had a 'young lover' as well, meaning Hongli before he became the Emperor. Now that she's dead, presumably, she's with that version of him. -Hongli's final act for her is symbolic in so many ways. He gave his other wives, even the ones that he hated, lofty titles and grand funerals in order to embellish his image as a caring and devoted husband; here, he's roundly criticized by his court for downgrading her funeral and refusing to even give her a posthumous title. This is the one thing he's ever done that makes him look bad, but is in accordance with her wishes. He understood, from her hair cutting and her burning of the portrait, that she didn't want to be his Empress, or even his wife, anymore. However, as a royal, there would be plenty of records of her being both of those things, and as long as she was tied to him in that way, her spirit could never be free. The only way to grant her peace would be to completely erase her from history, never to be judged as an Empress or a consort again. -Hongli and the Empress Dowager both agree to have Yanwan killed after he decides to name Yongyan as Crown Prince so that she can never experience the benefits of being the Empress Dowager, which is what she wanted all along. Presumably, she was holding out until one of her sons inherited, at which point they could pardon and free her. He also declined to make Yongji his heir because of Ruyi's letter, not wanting him to experience the stress and loneliness of being an Emperor; Yongji died at the age of 24, and was given the title 'Prince of the Third Rank', oddly low for a legitimate son, perhaps for the same reasons as his mother. -The green plum/qingying tree that Ruyi has been tending the entire series, and which has seemed dead up until now, begins to bloom again after Qianlong passes away. This could be symbolic of several things: Ruyi's spirit finally being freed after Hongli cuts his hair, agreeing to her 'divorce', or potentially, them reuniting in the afterlife. Personally, I think he'd need to reincarnate plenty of times before she'd ever be willing to take him back, but the final shot of the drama is of a young Qingying walking towards the camera, which seems to support the second interpretation. I guess we'll never know. -The ending of the drama states that 'after Qianlong's court, never was there another Ula-Nara woman entering the palace to be a consort'---Ruyi spared her clanswomen from her fate. As far as I can tell, this holds true in real life as well---there are no recorded Ula-Nara consorts after Qianlong. In recorded history, we know vanishingly little about the real Empress Nara. I say 'Nara' because we don't even know which Nara clan she was from---likely Hoifa-Nara or Ula-Nara, but we can't know for sure, because most of the records surrounding her have been destroyed. We don't even have an official portrait of her; she may be in the background of some paintings, and there is a painting called 'La Concubine' by Jean Denis Attiret that is rumored to be of her, but again, we can't be sure. We know that she was the daughter of Narbu, of the Bordered Blue Banner; we know that she was married into Prince Bao of the First Rank's manor as a ce fujin, we know she was made Consort Xian, then Noble Consort, then Imperial Noble Consort, and finally Empress. We know, at some point, that her seal and edicts proclaiming her Empress were taken away, most likely because she cut her hair; that she was confined to her palace and died in disgrace, and that she is the only Qing empress to have no posthumous title. Like so many other women in history, we know her in relation to a man. We don't know what her favorite food was, or her favorite flower. We don't know if she painted, or rode horses, or played Go. We don't know who she was friends with or who she hated. We don't know what she really thought of the Emperor, if she ever loved him or simply cared as a proper consort should. We don't know what went through her head as she cut her hair, as she watched her seal and edicts being taken away, as her palace was locked and her servants removed. We don't know her name. We know of an 'Empress Nara'. We don't know of who she really was. With a wave of his hand, one man obliterated her and her memory. And, in a great and beautiful irony, such an act ensured her immortality. The mystery of the Step-Empress is enduring. Plenty of dramas and books have been written on the subject; people discuss her almost as much as her husband. The woman behind the mask is gone, but the Nara Empress lives forever. There have been debates, especially in this fandom and in others, about what type of posthumous title she should've had, or if she would've wanted one at all. If I could submit a humble suggestion: Empress Jizhu (记住--'remember, commit to memory'). (Thank you all for reading my rants. I am but a humble, extremely amateur armchair historian---and an American, English-speaking one, at that. Most of my knowledge comes from other commenters and Google. The fact that anyone actually bothered to interact with any of my comments about this fringe fandom and the drama it revolves around warms my cold, lifeless heart. May your dramas be well-plotted, your costumes historically-accurate, and your ships endgame.)

I’d like to suggest an award: The Top Scheming Consort Award: 1st Place: Hailan. She might have not been favored, yet she knew how to play harem politics. She was never caught by anyone other than Ruyi, and she was never demoted. She didn’t need anyone’s help, and I even suspect she schemed to make Ruyi the Empress for her own good, not RuYi’s. She enjoyed a relatively stable position, and she also almost became Empress Dowager without being favored! 2nd Place: Yanwan. She was smart, and knew how to use lust to manipulate the Emperor. She wasn’t born into high nobility and became a posthumous Empress. She’s not higher because she couldn’t have done it without creepy eunuch, and she was caught and demoted many times. Although she succeeded in putting her son on the throne, it wasn’t in the way she intended and she spent the rest of her life in misery. 3rd Place: Jia. The master manipulator. She was so good in the first phase of the drama. She’s not higher because despite her efforts, she didn’t succeed in either becoming the empress or putting one of her sons on the throne. She was also caught and demoted, and there’s the theory that she wasn’t really smart, but it was her maid, Zhenshu, the mastermind behind Jia’s success. What do you all think?

I agree with this ranking, as much as I disagree with OP putting Jia with the Dumdum award. Her first scheme that failed was near foolproof if Ruyi hadn’t switched the bracelet. If she did anything dumb, it would be that she was too obvious with her contempt for Ruyi, and her ambition. Otherwise she took down a bunch of people and you gotta give her props. Hailan def deserves to be top 1 tho. She knew when to fight and when to back down. She had the whole package - manipulation, good timing, personal talent and for that she has a good success rate and a decent kill list.

Again, appearance: Hongli wanted to be perceived as having filial piety towards his grandfather and not have a longer reign than the Kangxi Emperor (61 years), so he "officialy" retireretired as "Taishang Huang" in his 6th year, only to remain the de facto ruler until his death in 1799. Yongyan then forced Hongli's favourite corrput favourite official (or better: favourite corrupt official) Niohuru Heshen to hang himself. During Hongli's reign, the civil and military bureaucracy was already corrupt (a Ming inheritance). Hongli threw money at it, money that Yongyan ddn't have.

It occurred to me during this episode that Ruyi's Rongpei is very different from the Empress Dowager's Fujia and the Emperor's Yuhu. The latter two are subtle and conscious of etiquette and decorum. There was a scene of Fujia training a young lady (I think she was Shu Ping while in training) how to move. Rongpei on the other hand was promoted by Ruyi into position after long years working laborious tasks, and she's a blunt talking one who took a broom to Yanwan's servants. Suoxin was loyal and capable, she wanted to stay on and serve Ruyi. But Ruyi wished for her to marry a good person and live a peaceful family life, instead of continuing to serve her in the palace. She wanted the same for A'Ruo too. Unfortunately, A'ruo betrayed Ruyi and didn't come to any good end. It is quite telling a fulfilling family life was what Ruyi saw as true happiness. I wonder why she asked Rongpei in the novel to look for another master if she could, why not encourage Rongpei to ask for permission to leave the palace?
@dramarecaps4217
@dramarecaps4217 11 ай бұрын
The only thing I can think of is that RongPei seemed older than the rest? We don't really get to hear much about her backstory, but considering the actress that they chose is clearly older looking than Suoxin, Aruo, etc., I think we're supposed to get the vibe that she plans on being a lifelong servant (like the Empress Dowager's maid) and either doesn't have the means or the inclination to marry and start a family.
@cheryl8069
@cheryl8069 11 ай бұрын
@dramarecaps4217 yeah, Rongpei was older, and she'd worked in the palace for a long time and didn't have family. I guess there wasn't any place outside viable for her. And Ruyi probably trusted that Ying ang Rong would help look out for Rongpei. Esp Ying who's dad wields great influence

I have so many more thoughts but, can I just say I was sobbing like a baby with the way you edited Ruyi’s final conversation with Rongpei? Like, watching that I realized that no matter how bad those consorts were, I couldn’t hate them. They’re all helpless victims of a rigged system where they have to fight for favor or die unloved, unremarkable and disgraced by their families. I say, the way Ruyi told Qianlong that their relationship was over is the most eloquent way I have ever seen someone tell someone else to go pound sand. Ruyi is a “loser” because she refused to fight like what we see in normal harem shows. But she also won because she never forgot who she was. She just wanted to love and be loved. When Qianlong said “maybe she shouldn’t be in the palace”, he was absolutely on the mark. She should have never been the emperor’s woman because there isn’t really such a thing as true love when it’s all about gaining glory for clans and crown prince shenanigans. For all her flaws, though. Ruyi was a model empress. She never caused drama, she was kind to all imperial children and she saw her fellow consorts as humans - not titles. I love her and I am glad she’s free. I wish in my head, I could give her a temple name she deserves. Thank you, Drama Recaps for all your videos on Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace! I could have never gone through it again if it weren’t for you and this community! Looking forward to your Yanxi recap but please take a break if needed. Watching this drama really drains lol.

To add: Maoqian should get honorary dum-dum award because she really blew it for herself. All she had to do was be a nice, agreeable, caring wife and watch her husband get promoted each time while reaping the benefits. But she had to be an idiot and go in there guns a blazing. Now she’s under house arrest for the rest of her life (who are we kidding? Ling probably had her killed off screen) and divorced from her husband because even the emperor agreed she was SO unbearable that he agreed to have Ling Yunche divorce her. She gained nothing and lost everything. A true dum dum.

I have a love-hate relationship with this drama. 40 years of being married to the emperor and being in the harem, Ruyi still decides not to do anything to protect her loved ones from all the schemes. You possibly can't be that delulu to think no one is planning to hurt you or your loved ones.

During that final meeting when the Emporer says "Ruyi-ah," so affectionately I was concerned for Ruyi falling for his shit again or acting like she did to appease him. This creep physically and emotionally abused Ruyi for years. All of the carnage ultimately pointed to him and his choices. It could never have been a healthy relationship in the first place because the Emporer was already married as a prince, other wives, wives with politically powerful families/clans, a disgraced former Empress as an Aunt, his mixture of power and personal susceptibility to vice etc...etc...but mostly, I think because Ruyi could never divorce and leave that awful place.

@@StinocoI personally didn’t feel it was cringy, and I think I’m really sensitive to cringe. The main character is extremely intelligent, and some of her successes could be seen as a stretch, but I don’t think she’s a Mary Sue at all. She has multiple failures and setbacks. She’s just extremely smart and strategic and is constantly on her guard so she’s able to outwit her opponents a lot simply because they’re predictable. And frankly, it’s really refreshing to see a series where the main character isn’t a bright-eyed, naive lady who has her spirit broken over the course of the show. Since we are at the end. Though I don't know if you'll continue your drama recaps series, I have a few dramas you can look into that you might like. - The Legend of Mi Yue: A drama about the first Empress Dowager of China with the lead played by Zhen Huan's actress! Along with a few other Legend of Zhen Huan actresses as well. The writing does get a little choppy near the end I should warn. - The Legend of Xiao Chuo: I have yet to watch this, it's a drama about the Empress Xiao Yanyan during the Great Liao (also known as Khitan State), which existed between 916 and 1125. All I know that Ling Yunche is an Emperor in this drama and deserves to be suggested purely from that. - The Legend of Dugu: Didn't get to finish this but it's about the three Dugu sisters and how three of them managed to become empresses, with one being the precursor to the Tang Dynasty. It's a bit weird at times and the main lead actress is NOT who you're going to think it is. It does have one of the hottest male romantic leads I have ever seen in my life and that is not an exaggeration. This does have a sort of sequel series as well. - Magnificent Century: This is not a Chinese harem drama, but a harem drama about the Ottoman Turks and has a sequel series. It does not have perfectly consistent writing however but it is still extremely entertaining. Note: Whilst an English sub is available on KZbin, the episodes arent really in order despite on how they're mumbered.

Ruyi really was the last Ulanara woman in the Qing dynasty and it is something worth noting how she wished no other woman from her clan to suffer the same fate she did. I wish we saw more of Hailan and her fate after Ruyi died. All the scheming was for what for Hailan? Then Zhen Huan coming out alive of 2 reigns. Someone give this woman an award. The ending felt cheap for Yanwan and honestly a bit unrealistic. I expected an ending more like Jia for her, but the reality is she did live long after Ruyi. This drama was such a crazy ride! I've only ever watched it alone, so I always wanted to see it with someone else to bounce thoughts off of. This series has been so much fun to watch and talk with others in the comments. I know originally this series was going to be 90+ episodes until it got cut down to 87. I wish they could somehow give us that extra footage! The only lacking thing this drama had imo is that we really don't know much about the princesses. We see a lot of the princes ig because they fight for the throne and so are woven into the main plot. But its weird that Consort Chun had her daughter 4th princess and we literally never see her. Not even at her death! It was so odd to me. I'd have liked to see more of 7th princess too. And 8th princess is never even mentioned, though I just assume that's due to the consort who has her being cut from the story. I also wish they could've added in the end is that Ruyi would've left letters for more people other than her son. Especially for Hailan, who was there for her since the beginning. Maybe Ying and Rong, or even Suoxin would've been so nice to hear Ruyi's thoughts. Its almost like she's gone and we never really get to hear what's going on in her heart at the end of it all.

Thank you so much for your recaps!! I started watching the recaps until they stopped then I randomly watched clips without really knowing the order but had a general idea how things went down. Anyways I was so thrilled the rest of the recaps are available now bc I love your hilarious spin on it. I did not watch this drama bc it’s so heavy I can’t deal but I also want to know in detail what happened 😅, and you gave me that girl. THANK YOU!

Regarding Ruyi just referring to herself as “I/me” during her last conversation with the emperor, I think Yanwan did the same thing. When she was telling the emperor that she didn’t care, he never got her heart either. If I’m not mistaken. It’s like the first time she’s ever spoken to him honestly in the whole series 😂 😊

Oh great, now my life has no purpose. No but seriously thank you very much for all the excellent work and your incredible charisma your videos have been the best part of many of my days especially difficult days and I will miss them a lot :( By the way I don't know if I can process the award you gave to the creepy eunuch considering that his smile was what I hated the most about him, every time I saw it I wanted to punch him. This drama is very melancholic but it also has an undeniable beauty, the idea of Ruyi finally being able to be free, of the intrigues of the hate and of that "love" that hurt her even more than many of her enemies in the harem is bittersweet. And Ruyi's last scene with the emperor is so great, you can literally see how despite the pain it is for Ruyi to accept that flowers also wither, she knew how to let go, because only then could she be truly free... Also, I don't know if I'm wrong, but from what I understand, after the death of Empress Nara in real life (aka Ruyi), Emperor Qianlong did not appoint a new empress, but it was Consort Ling who took care of the affairs of the harem (as Imperial Noble Consort) until her own death and then when their son became the new emperor he granted her the posthumous title of empress.

you're correct! Which is why their changes in this ending makes me so mad xD
@rodrigosalguerorivera6355
@rodrigosalguerorivera6355 Жыл бұрын
@@imogencrusader6306 Yeah, the series is not really an exact account of what happened (at least of the part that was recorded in history) but considering the progression of the story that the series presents, this could not have ended much different than it did, I mean, Ling is the main villain in this drama so you can't just let her "win" even more when the ending is already tragic enough.

@@rodrigosalguerorivera6355 oh i getcha! I think that's the problem since this drama calls itself a historical drama and not a fiction. Like they did everything else so perfectly and then just dropped the ball for the finale.

I love how in depth you go on the titles. I noticed with empress dowager Ruyi and emperor would refer to themselves as ‘archen.’ Anyone outside of the empress presents can refer to themselves as bengong if they are in and head of their palace otherwise it’s Chén qiè but I’ve also noticed Ruyi uses it when with the emperor.

This drama is unrivaled for me, be it the acting, the visuals, the storylines... I am still looking for something similar years after watching it, and I can't find it. Story of yanxi palace has some good moments but the acting cannot compare, Legend of zhen huan is also immaculate but I already watched it several times, legend of miyue has some incredible male leads that you can actually like! But the storylines are lacking after a while. If anyone has recommandations I would appreciate :D Thanks for the videos again, once again you gave us the details that non-chinese speakers could easily miss, that's why I love your work so much!

Ruyi’s look of disappointment when the emperor asks her about taking the seal back says it all. He still doesn’t get it none of it was bout status or titles it was bout him and the promises he made and broke.. even her last scene Ruyi wish was that all of the kids got a chance to grow up and live well..

We always wondered how the hell the beginning of Jia's downfall happened. She was such a schemer in the beginning. I thought at first it was because of Zenshu, her maid back then. That perhaps some of Jia's other schemes and plans came from her. But then I realised Ling is also such a schemer. They were both so great on scheming in the beginning but then declined later on. I think after Empress Fuca died, Jia did not really see Ruyi as a strong opponent and with how strong her maiden clan was, she became arrogant. Ling thought thay since Ruyi is locked up and had a serious falling out with the Emperor, she thought Ruyi can no longer stage a comeback. She just didn't think that the combined forces of Ruyi, Hailan, Rong, Jiang Yubin and with her paranoia would be her downfall. I can never forgive the emperor. All he said is "it's all in the past." Not a single accountability. Half of the shit Yanwan did would not have happened if he wasn't such an ass.
