This is the part I love the most in the entire series..

There was to much scheming, dirty tricks being played, death. Damn, I'd have myself have fake rashes, anything not to be selected to be a concubine or anything, not even a maid, to go into any palace. Id rather live in seclusion in the mountains. Never to marry or see a sight of any man. They were all so treacherous to one another. Thank God i didnt live in that era.

But read the autobiography of the last imperial eunuch: people were desperate to get into the palace to relieve family poverty. It's an extraordinary book, gives terrific insight Into these lives.

let me tell you there was no one side that didn't scheme, and that is especially true in the original novel: Fuca Langhua, Gao Xiyue, Jin Yuyan, Wei Yan'wan, Qianlong, & even the "good guys" Ruyi & Hailan themselves *all schemed*

It truly was survival of the fittest, law of the jungle, whatever you want to call it.

Beginning to end, both Ruyi and the Emperor were played against.
