How to check & service the RV main breaker panel & transfer switch to prevent bad things happening like FIRES.
In April, I covered the MAIN things I do DURING or AFTER every WINTER to get your RV ROAD READY for the next season. One of these items was to Clean all electrical connections, along with the main breaker panel in the RV and the transfer switch.
• Annual RV, PM Items to...
This video is a good lesson to show you how to do a VERY IMPORTANT PM item, to two very important electrical items. The main breaker box in your RV & the transfer switch. This will give those of you who are afraid to work on electrical items the confidence you need that you can do this stuff yourself-safely-and protect your RV from an unnecessary disaster like your RV catching on fire.
The first thing to do is unplug your RV from shore power & make sure the generator is not running.
BREAKER BOX
• Look for torque value on the inside of the panel cover or on the breakers themselves
• If you don’t have a torque label on your panel or on the breakers themselves go here: www.rvtravel.com/rv-electrici...
• All torque values on the RV Breaker Box & Transfer Switch are in INCH" lbs. not FT’ lbs. You’ll need a torque-limiting screwdriver that can be set from 20" in-lbs to 60" in-lbs like the one I have in my Amazon Store. The price of these things are all over the place. But I chose a good, well built, easy to use mid-level tool that will get the job done & won’t cost an arm & leg. You know how I hate & DO NOT buy cheap tools. Be sure when you're thru using this torque screwdriver or ANY torque wrench, always back it completely off so there’s no tension on the spring. That way it won’t lose it’s calibration while not being used.
• Over tightening can cause broken lugs/insulators so that’s why you just don’t tighten these lugs & screws each time. This is important. When people check for loose screws or lugs & they don’t use a torque screwdriver, overtime they will turn every screw/bolt, at least a 16th or 32nd of a turn, even if they're tight enough already. Doing this on a regular basis means you're going to eventually way over tighten all of them. A torque screw driver will prevent that.
• Back off each screw a little, & then retighten them until the torque screwdriver clicks
• If you want……as an added inspection, pull breakers & check poles for any over heating or arching issues. If there is, clean those connections & poles
• Do not use dielectric grease, or post protectants on these connections like you would on outside electrical stuff like in your battery bay or other outside applications where corrosion can be a problem. And NEVER use Loctite on any of this connections
• These torque values are not very much. They’re in INCH" lbs.
TRANSFER SWITCH
We’re still Unplugged from shore power and the generator is NOT running
There's more to it than this-but in a nut shell-when you plug into shore power or run your generator, the transfer switch is responsible for distributing all your 120V power to your RV.
Not paying attention or ignoring doing PM on your transfer switch can cause all kinds of unnecessary electrical problems in your RV and sometimes fires.
• This is why we want to service this baby every year. It’s just to important to ignore or put off
• Use Damp Rid to help control moisture in the electrical bay
• Remove cover
• Look for torque value on the back side panel
• Begin servicing….

You reminded me today that it is so very important to watch until the very end of any instructional video! I have not been backing off any of my torque tools for probably the last two or three decades! As soon as you gave that advice, I immediately remembered that was the way I learned about those tools at about age 11 or 12. Sometimes what we know best turns out to include some important things we forgot! Thank you so much for all your videos, even though I am a van guy, obviously everything still applies to what I do, besides you guys are all always a lot of fun!

It's nice to see that you mentioned-*very important to watch until the very end of any instructional video* I have some limited data tools that YT provides me on my channel to see how folks watch my videos. With this meta data, I can clearly see some folks will watch long enough to get what they think they need and then move on. Some will even ask me a question that I already covered in the video....but they didn't watch it long enough to get that info. My video's are instructional in nature, but at the end I try to wrap it all up in a summary or cover things that most content providers don't bother to cover. Like the backing off the tension on the torque wrenches. My problem in doing this is, I have to always watch the length of the final video. It's hard to keep peoples attention past 15 minutes or so, and if you look at my video library there aren't to many vid's that are in the 15 minute range. It just takes more time than that to show what folks need to know. Knowing this, I really try hard to announce or give clues to stay tuned b/c there's more important info coming up at the end. But honestly, I really don't know how effective that is. But you did stick to the end and you came away with a real valuable nugget. thx Bill 👍🔧

I find no fault in your video. BUT... it is important as you loosen those connectors on the breakers to make sure the wires to not drop and if they do you must loosen and put the wires back. GREAT VIDEO. as always. I did want to tell you we got the BLUETTI 200ACMax. It worked great. On a trip we traveled four hours and ran the overhead air without using the generator. We used 70% of the batteries but the RV was nice and cool as we traveled. It was so very nice. Additionally, I have been working very hard to keep up my maintenance. You are my mentor. I will buy your torque screw tool driver from your store today. THANK YOU AND MAY GOD BLESS YOU.

One of you commented below: *You need to make sure people know to make sure the wire doesn’t inch out when they loosen the screws , some may try to come drop down if your not careful* *My reply* It would be pretty hard for those big wires to do that, but the point is well taken. So just keep your eye on each wire as you loosen it and make sure it hasn't dropped down a little. If it has, just hold the wire up in place and then torque it.

Hi, I kind of stumbled across your channel and love it. My wife and I own a 2007 45' Holiday Rambler DP w/tag and 4 slides which we absolutely love. The problem is that it has more buttons, switches, and gadgets than a space shuttle. Unfortunately, I am not the most mechanically inclined in some areas and one of those areas includes electricity. I'm not afraid of it but I am intimidated by it as I do NOT know anything about electricity nor the lingo. People just start talking about it in electrician lingo and I am lost during the first 5 minutes. Your channel and this episode is probably the first one, specifically dealing with an electrical topic, that is actually helpful to someone that is not an electrician. I really appreciate that and the first thing I am going to do this weekend is perform the same PM that you just did. I also looked at your Amazon store and it seems ever since COVID, all my wife and I do is shop via Amazon so we might as well help you by using your store. I didnt know that people had stores that you could shop and help them by doing so. I'm also going to look through your playlist as I am certain that there will be a lot of helpful videos. Thank you again for making these videos so that anyone can actually understand them. Who knows, you might have just helped me avoid a devastating RV fire. Those are so incredibly scary and I feel terrible for anyone that has had one. Take care and God bless!

Terry, Thank you so much for taking the time to comment the way you did. I know they're many folks that can identify why your fears and that's precisely why I did this video. Also, can't thank you enough for going thru my Amazon Store to purchase whatever you need whether it's RV related or not. It's a great way to say thank you for all our efforts. That's a BIG rig you have there. When we're first looking for a FT rig, I had my eyes on a beautiful earlier model Prevost-I believe it was a 1999 or maybe 2001 I forget-but was priced right and in great shape. BUT....as you said, it had so many bells & whistles I walked away. To much stuff to go wrong and maintain. At this stage of my life, I like to practice the KISS method as much as I possibly can 👍🔧

Great video as usual Martin. Those were not on my PM list but going forward it will be. One safety thing I would add is put a meter on the connectors to verify the power is off. I’m not entirely sure, but on mine, even when shore power and the generator are off I have an inverter which powers the refrigerator so I think I would also have to turn the master power switch off to cut all power completely. Anyway just my 2 cents worth. Thanks again and I’ll be buying that torque screw driver from your store

Martin, I have read the maintenance standards for electrical boards and breakers in the past. One thing it says is circuit breakers should be turned off and on 6 times with no load each year. You need to know the mechanism is working. If not replace the breaker. Although you didn’t show tightening them, the neutrals are typically more of an arcing overheating problem than the hots. I have no explanation why but, they showed up more in thermal scans. A thermal scan will show problems way before they get bad. Not very confident sand paper in breaker clip is good. A couple grains of sand can hold the clip away from the bus and possible arcing.

Hi Martin, I am a new sub so don't know if you ever covered this topic but one of the greatest threats to the the electrical system in an RV is an electric cord reel. All the major manufacturers use the same engineered design that is prone to failure. Research 'slip rings' and see the damage (more pics for your collection😉). My 50 amp RV was damaged when the white wire (neutral) no longer made contact inside the reel which created an 'open neutral'. 110V will double to 220v which your appliances will not like. Fried the harness for our 110 dryer which was running at the time and tripped the main breaker which protected more loss from occurring. The 'slip rings' are part of the commutator or center hub of the reel. One brand (Southwire) provides no access to check or maintain them while the other does (Glendinning is screwed on versus rivets). Most RVers will place their electrical protection (surge or boost) at the parks' power pedestal, unaware that their reel could cause extreme havoc. I now have my power protection after the reel inside my electrical bay. In fact, I removed the reel and instead of carrying just 30' of cord plus weight of reel, carry 50' of cord without the risk of damage or fire.
@RVstreet
@RVstreet Жыл бұрын
thx Dean so much 👍 No I haven't covered the problems with a reel b/c it only applies to a very limited number of RVer's. But you're right. Those cord reels can cause all kinds of problems. I never liked them. It's one of those bells & whistle items that I can live without. But if you wanted to keep it then what you did by installing your surge protector AFTER the reel is a smart thing to do. But as I mentioned, MOST Rver's don't have a reel and therefore putting a surge protector at the pedestal if they want to go portable is just fine. I actually have two. One at the pedestal and one hardwired in my electrical bay. I like double protection AND if I see a severe storm coming in the forecast, I just unplug till it's over. thx for taking the time to comment Dean and glad to have you aboard my friend. Oh.....btw...here's all my videos, JIC you're interested: kzbin.infoplaylists

OK finally got enough cool morning weather to get into checking the torque on all my connections. Historically I have done this about one time a year on the main transfer switch, every time finding loose connections. This year was no different. Like Martin my incoming and outgoing connections were all out of whack in my transfer switch. Ground wire connections on mine are to be set at 35 inch lbs and the main supply lines are 45 inch lbs. Its shocking how loose they can become in a year. But then again an RV is often referred to as a traveling earthquake so its essential this is a regular maintenance item. The main breaker box was another project and went well with the exception of about 1/3 the breakers. The torque spec on my breaker panel is 35 inch lbs. My breakers (WBGO 2016 38Q) have flanges surrounding the screw contact connections. The shaft on my torque driver would not access the terminal screws (too short to get between flanges on breakers to reach the terminal screws) so I need to run to HF to see if they have a longer shaft driver end to access the screw terminals. One other minor glitch is the ground bar terminal screws are softer metal and the the slots started rounding off during the torque process. One I mangled up badly but there were enough blank spare slots to swap that bad boy out. It would be wise for all to adhere to Martin's advice here and make this a regular PM item- at least annually to save your rig from damage!

We had our new to us 36" Keystone Fuzion's transfer switch burn up a week after we brought it home, Apparently, there had been a recall on this particular transfer switch and it was never done. Great video as usual. Always appreciated. Could I request a video on the BIRD, what it does and how it is maintained? I'm having an issue with mine, but cant tell if the issue is the relay or the electronic module. Since i don't understand how it does what it does, its difficult.
@RVstreet
@RVstreet Жыл бұрын
Well, there are several types of BIRD systems. One set up for a gas coach and a different set up for a diesel coach. Then there's a BIRD and then a BIRD-2 and Big Boy System. With that being said, I have a BIM system and mine has started to act up too. These solenoids and the relay are known for going bad. The switching back and forth between chassis and house batt's over time will overheat and pit the contacts. The relay can also go bad. They can show signs of failure OR they can just fail without warning. It's recommended to change these out every 5yrs. or 10yrs for sure. My coach is 10yrs. old and is showing signs of failing to charge the house batt's while underway. So I'm replacing all 3 solenoids and the relay soon. If you do Facebook hit me up on messenger and I'll attach 2 different PDF's that explain how these work for either both gas and diesel and they also have diagrams.

Hey, Martin! Hope all is well with you! I've asked you a question before. In your mind, what are the top ten preventative maintenance items a new RV'er in a new-like used (2009 Winnebago Aspect, mini-C) Rv needs to think about first? I'm sitting here thinking I probably need to do everything and don't know where to start! BTW, watching your videos gave me the confidence to change my leaking city water connection and my shower head and faucet! A big deal considering I have zero experience with anything even remotely along any sort of maintenance line. Take care! Chris in West Texas

How about 11 top things - Are you full time or use it part time during the year? Not knowing this here we go: 1) Flush your water heater at least once a year. If you have a suburban water heater replace the anode rod when you service. Atwood water heaters don't need a anode rod 2) Install a water softener and full RV water filtering system 3) Change your oil once a year, change air filter every other year. This applies to your generator too if you have one 4) Clean and condition your slide seals once a year 5) Check and service your roof at least once a year, preferably twice a year 6) Clean the evap coil on your AC unit up on the roof. Be sure you're unplugged from shore power and generator off when you do this 7) Don't neglect the outside of your rig. Protect it at least twice a year with RejeX 8) Be sure to have a TPMS installed and make sure your tires are inflated properly with the correct PSI according to your weight. Doing this alone can prevent you from having bad things happening in the first place. Replace tires around every 5-6years regardless of how they look 9) If you have lead acid batteries, install an automatic watering system and be sure to check and fill them every other month with distilled water, especially in the summer 10) Service your outside steps once a year and then con't to lube you step metal linkage arms every 3 months. Be sure to also support your steps underneath to the ground with blocking of sort when your parked 11) You RV is 13yrs. old. If you haven't done a total flush of your brake fluid or coolant do that. Brake fluid should be changed out every 3yrs. and coolant every 4 or 5 years. Have a good shop do these two things for you. Otherwise, you can do all these other things yourself Chris and I have videos on all of them. Don't be afraid. kzbin.infoplaylists

I’ve heard a minimum 14/3 and no longer than 50 ft. I’m foing to stay a week at a friends house and the 15amp plug is 80ft away. Is it okay to double up 2 50 footers? Thanx in advance!!! 👍😃🍻

For 50' you can get away with 14/3 but I would not allow much of it to lay in the sun. Heat can build up resistance and increase the chance of throwing a breaker. I certainly would not run 2 - 50', in the sun or not. Go up to 12/3. You want to be safe. The longer the cords the more resistance. Leaving it out in the sun makes resistance even higher. Besides, in the future you may end up moochdocking somewhere else that has a 20amp outlet available......like we did this summer. In that case you need a 12/3 to take advantage of the full 20amps. Even though a 12/3 cord is rated for 15amps I ran my 50' 12/3 to a garage 20amp breaker this summer and even ran one AC unit. Even with that AC running and my battery converter running, my incoming voltage only dropped to 112volts. Plenty safe for the cord and the AC compressor. So IMO, just start with 2 - 50' 12/3' and you'll have all your bases covered. I have real good 14/3 and 12/3 extension cords that I carry with me in my Amazon store in the Everything Electrical category. And thank you Mike for supporting us thru our store. You and all our fans are so awesome 😎 🙏 www.amazon.com/shop/rvstreet

Hey guys. Without being a dopey friend, when you were inside on the breaker box ya spelled steel wool, steal. Just a small typo. You thinking of a video on a complete transmission fluid change and the filter on the transmission cooler yet? Keep up the great work 👍 👏 💪 👌. In Ohio now heading to Niagara falls at the end of July then Wisconsin for my daughter & deliver her a Lectric XP 2.0 Step-thru bike. Take care and as always, I got your back. Steve Robinson

Good catch Steve. I should of caught that. Joanie also proofs the videos before we upload and she missed it too. Oh....we've been to NF too and it's beautiful. Be sure to take your passport with you so you can go to the Canadian side to see the falls from the front. American side is good too but Canadian side is better.

Hi Martin. Your videos are GREAT. Very, very instructive. I to own a Winnebago Vista but mine is a 30T. Guess what fuses and breakers no where near what what yours looks like. In fact I have to research the heck out of this panel to find out what's what. Anyway, is there a way I can contact you personally? I'd like to share photos etc. I'm running into push back with Winne, Camping World where I purchased as well as the box manufacturer.

If you do Facebook, go to my YT home page and click the FB logo and hit me up on messenger. You can attach photos there. Forget about getting any help from CW but I have found Winnie VERY helpful over the phone by talking to a specialist. You can also download all your diagrams, schematics, plumbing etc from their website Winnebago General Inquires for MH’s - Call early, they open @ 8am their time. 641-585-3535 or 641-585-6395 Service Dept. 800-537-1885 and then there’s a menu option. Be sure to have your VIN# or your serial# ready. Email to parts dept. wgoparts@wgo.net

I now have a small 30A travel trailer. The breaker box is easy to find, but where would I even look for a transfer switch? One thing RV manufacturers don’t give owners is the schematics for the RV. No electrical, plumbing or even ductwork, so I’m a bit stumped.

OK I really appreciate your video. Only issue is I have a South wire transfer switch and everything in my transfer switch is self contained. There is no way to see the switches. So how do I clean that?

Hi Richard, The link to my Amazon store is in the description text under every video. Some folks do have a tough time finding that area on some devices. So.....I did a video to help show all the ways to navigate around youtube videos on different devices. I think you'll find it very helpful: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mKHVcqZ-hJxgfJo But for now here's my Amazon Store link. Just bookmark it and that way it'll be easy to find in the future, anytime you need to shop on Amazon for anything: www.amazon.com/shop/rvstreet thx so much Richard for wanting to support us 👍🔧
