Totally agreed! If the current truck was stock, I would have swapped it out instantly. However, they have made so many excellent upgrades that it is more than just getting a new truck. It is also having to replicate most, if not all of the upgrades in the new rig as well.

I say keep the truck you have put so much time, great enhancements, very important improvements, and many memories on a pickup that has served you guys a lot. Mark. I’ve said this a few times. I believe you changed your truck battery to an AGM type battery. I did that to my old ford truck and had nothing but issues. Changed back to normal lead acid battery and it all went away. This from the internet. If you installed an AGM battery in your truck and are now experiencing engine issues, it's likely because your vehicle's charging system isn't properly designed to handle the AGM battery, potentially causing undercharging or overcharging issues which can affect engine performance; it's best to consult a mechanic to diagnose the specific problem and adjust the charging system if necessary

Yep, I called this as soon as he added the AGM. The AGM will also cause low voltage on startup, it won’t provided high enough cranking amps.

I was going to mention the battery connectors. We've had multiple messages when the battery wasn't making good contact. We also had a DEF pump go bad, and replacing it fixed the problem of "cripple" mode. Also, trade ins so often don't give you what the truck is worth.

Option 3 should at least be a consideration, we were having def issues and decided option 3 was half the price of replacing def and dpf. 80k miles later, no issues. Truck runs great, and gets better mileage to boot. Downside would be, if you need or want to sell, it will be private sell. If yall like the Truck keep it. I’m sure the delta on the new rig was a sticker shock. Also note, try some lead acid batteries in there, we had some gremlins with agm. Have a great day!

Y'all I've never owned a diesel, but every friend of mine that has a newer diesel, regardless of make has had issues with DEF, injectors, etc. at some point during ownership. I have a 2020 F250 6.2L Gas with the 6 speed...no such issues. IMO, repair it and keep it as long as you can...you have your rig modified to work for y'all. I like the "real life" dilemmas and how you all handle them...great content!

I deleted the emissions on my ‘18 F250 Platinum because once the def, dpf, and scr problems started they just kept on coming. When the dealer gave me a quote for thousands ($5k + in parts alone) to replace the full dpf/scr exhaust system I chose to delete all of it with a 4” straight pipe. I’m not here to argue the legality of it because federally, those systems are mandated. My state/local area does not require an inspection of non commercial diesel vehicles. But my truck has been flawless since and it cost me around $1500 doing all the work myself to delete the emissions. I did not increase the power level at all. The truck was louder so I added a resonator where the DPF was to quiet it back down.

Mark, I and many others have found out that a new truck isn't really the solution these days. With reliability down and even brand new trucks in the shop frequently, I've come to the conclusion, if you can afford it. Get a new truck and keep the old one. That way as a business owner you always have a back up plan. Plus it also let's you keep your journey and content based on taking a truck to 200,000 miles alive.

Our travel trailer weighs 4 tons. We bought a new '19 duramax and hated it. It cost so much i had to sell my daily driver also and use the diesel. The exhaust filter hates stop and go, which is how our towns roads are laid out. Kept the diesel 15 months and traded for a new 2020 gmc 2500 gasser double cab. Pulls the trailer just fine, a blast to drive, and no problems in 5 years. Love it !!

I have a 17 f250, I loved it when I bought it, has 160k mi on it. I recently put a good amount of work/money into it. New shocks, brakes, fluids, windshield and had it professionally detailed. It felt like getting a new truck but I wasnt saddled with a payment for a few years.

You can buy a new truck but that does not mean your not going to have issues. Your truck also has the better transmission over the new trucks.

Mark and Trish, we are full time RVers and we totally get your frustration and disappointment level. We have dealt with these moments many times. Labor Day weekend of 2022, we were on our way to Gatlinburg TN to spend the weekend camping with family. We were climbing a mountain going into Asheville NC and the motor in our Ford F250 Diesel blew up. We were 5 hours on the side of the road in 90 degree weather waiting for a tow truck with two dogs panting in the back seat. We also had to cancel all our camping reservations we had made for our trip to Maine. Took a month to find another truck. Disappointed, yes, but it's not the end of the world. Just keep on keeping on.

Glad to here Kaleb is on the mend and in a walking boot. I broke my tibia a few years ago, not as bad as he did. However, the non wieght bearing for more than 10 weeks was hard. Wishing him a fast recovery when he starts rehab.

We went there as kids with my parents back in the late 1960's. and 70's on March break in a tent trailer , Drove from Toronto Canada. I remember I 75 was not even totally complete. Spend the 1400, and if you still have problems, then trade in the truck. It is really hard to find a dealership that knows how to troubleshoot difficult electrical problems. If you have a intermittent corroded connector pin, or corroded ground connection (wiring problem), they will just keep chasing their tail costing you money.

Its Always Something! I got to a WalMart this morning and my Ram wouldn't shut off, how weird is that. My son's F250 had the same def issues as you. It took 3 dealerships but he finally found the right mechanic. He is light free now for 18 months. You made a good decision to keep it.

Agreed with some of the other comments about the time and money you’ve put into setting the truck up for what works well for you guys. Option 3 is a leap, but very highly recommended in the diesel world and opens up significant reliability and efficiency improvements. Plus with the cost of new vehicles, quality & craftsman going downhill, and even more tech in them, sticking with your current truck with a few “adjustments” is my vote! Cheers!

If you include the panhandle to the areas of Florida you are going to, you need to add Ft. Pickens to your list. It is a national seashore. You won’t find a prettier beech. Fort is very interesting. Campgrounds are within walking distance of the beach and the bay. If it is the right time of the year you can see the Blue Angels practice right above the fort at noon once or twice a week. It is one of our favorite places.

I'm glad to see Caleb is doing much better. On your pickup, I'd keep it, but washing it to make it feel like a new one won't help the horse power. Which we needed to do because our gas truck struggled a little going over mountain passes. So we got New 2024 f 250, which is the first thing I noticed was the turning radius. I loved it. I’m firmly on team ‘Keep the Truck.” The cost to get a new truck to where your current truck is at would be SUBSTANTIAL. The 6 speed trans in yours is very solid and you’ve already fixed the biggest issue with the DCR pump. The HO engine option in the 23+ trucks is cool but I can tell you they drink DEF like CRAZY. If you traded in to a new HO truck you’d be going through a lot more DEF than you are now. Forget 200k miles, I say the race is on to 300k. My daily driver VW has 350k and it runs like a sewing machine. Mileage is just a number.

We're currently at our RV trailer in the Ft Myers area & can sympathize with you re the weather. As I write this, the forecast has improved significantly. I can also relate to your truck issues; had a 2014 Ram ecodiesel since new, used it to haul our 35' trailer on many trips & finally in 2019 back & forth annually - Ontario to Ft Myers. Started having def issues, spent 4 days in Knoxville in Fall 2023 waiting for parts. Similar issues in 2024, to the point where I left the trailer here. (travelled back w/o trailer last May & truck never ran so well!!) However, die was cast re diesel and after much research decided on a Tundra hybrid. Has HP & torque that exceeds some 3/4 ton gassers - maiden voyage home with trailer will be in the Spring. Expect it will develop a significant thirst while towing, but no def issues and presumably no CEL will be a pleasant change. Weight loss program for the Ram aka your Option 3 was a serious consideration. Best of luck with whatever you choose!

Just bought myself a Christmas present a 2024 F-250 7.3 gas peasant spec XLT . Being a mechanic on European cars I’ve seen more DEF issues on VW and LR products I went gas for my personal vehicle but as a mechanic I like diesels when they break . I can say I’m impressed with my 7.3 so far but with only 444 miles and I haven’t towed with it yet , only time will tell .

My husband LOVES his Ford F250. Ours doesn’t have high miles, yet we’ve had a fair number of (expensive) things go wrong, including the turbo going out. That was extremely unfun. All that to say I felt your pain when your truck went into limp mode. Been there.

Option 1 - Keep it considering all the upgrades you've done. Regarding option 3 - keep all your old parts incase you change your mind later. You will thank me later for that piece of advice. Also for removing dog hair in the vehicle, consider a Lilly brush mini pet hair detailer. Makes cleaning so much easier. Brush hair together, remove with hand then vacuum left over.

Im at the same point with my 2016 Dodge. I love the truck and altho i havent put anywhere near the kinds of mods you have with yours, you do get to the point where you question how far you go. I have decided to put the 2300 dollar water pump into it, use it for the summer camping bookings and re evaluate in the fall.

The only way to avoid those def problems is to do option 3. With def it's one thing after another. My mechanic described it a peeling an onion. The computer stops at the first problem you fix it and the system rechecks and it finds another issue. A new truck is under warranty with def but the problems still happen. Option 3 stops that and you get better fuel economy and more power.

We just went through this with our 2011 Ford Expedition. Prices are so crazy right now that it cost less to do an engine swap than to get the same year rig again with (likely) the same problems and more miles. A significant upgrade was prohibitively expensive. Such a stressful decision making process! Hopefully it comes back from the shop tomorrow.

I think you can get better deals outside of Florida for sure. I searched for my previous F250 Tremor in 2022 and talked to dealerships in almost every state in the lower 48. Dealerships in Florida and Texas were the worst from a pricing perspective. Bought my Tremor (with no markup back then) from a Ford dealership in Heber City, UT. When I needed a long-wheelbase F350 Granger Ford in Iowa hands-down. 2% below invoice exactly 12 months ago (they are one of the largest Super Duty dealerships in the country and treat their customers fair). I think they offer 3% below invoice on 2025s at the moment.

We have a 2017 Ford F350 Lariat, had DEF issues. Found Power Stroke LLC in Fort Meyers. Excellent people, honest, fair and do great work. They only do Ford Power Stroke work. 👍

Glad im not the only one. Labor day weekend of 23 our family was traveling from southern arizona to bryce canyon for a family reunion. Just outside Phoenix our truck hauling our 40ft fifthwheel died. After 2 hours of troubleshooting i gave in and called a tow truck. Long story short we spend 27 hours on the side of i17. I was ready to sell right then. After having a clear head i found a wire that i pinch on a previous repair. We still made the family reunion. The decision to fix or replace is a huge decision especially when you have spent time and money to get the truck you love just right.

To confirm your thought that the new truck was not as tall as yours, yes, in 2020 Ford dropped the height of the trucks 1.5" to help with gooseneck/5th wheel towing. As someone who is still using a 2004 Dodge 3500 with 210k on it, thinking about refurbishing, I am on Team Keep It. I will probably replace it as the RV hauler here in a few years (still keeping the 04), but it's probably with a truck with over 100k miles. 2 is 1, 1 is none applies to trucks unless you become your own shade tree mechanic. If you do get a different/2nd truck as a diesel, aim at a 1ton so you have payload for if you do want to get back into 5th wheels, or really step out there into custom living quarter horse/cargo trailers.

Trish has it correct. Truck issues are nothing compared to family health issues. I have to remind myself of that sometimes too! Best of luck on being able to be patient for these issues to be in the past. Having recently let go of my favorite truck for a new truck, I can relate to the dilemma. I think you should do whatever repairs suggested and go from there. If you still have problems you can then buy a new truck. The worst that can happen is that you might spend a little more money. You can make more money, you can't make more time. I love my new truck and I have fond memories of my favorite truck that I had for 18 years! Mark, as the comment above stated, it could very well be the battery change unless these problems were there before that. If you do trade, I would get the high output power stroke. Either has plenty of power but you can't ever have too much. You can recognize if truck has the high output by the door emblem. The H.O has red emblem and the standard engine is black emblem. Standard engine is 475 hp/1050 torque and H.O is 500/1200. The new models ride and drive amazing! We are going with the 350 just for the extra payload and towing specs. To me, even the 350 rides as good as the F150!! Good luck on the issues.

Fix it. It will happen to the next one too and maybe sooner. Reductant codes now days are more common than air. The weird collision and sensor issue you had driving to the dealer , was likely snow or ice from washing in the cold and interfered with the collision detection sensors out front. Pretty common in cold states . The reductant code you either need the sensor itself or likely dpf or def pump. SCR rarely fails. Based on their quote likely the def sensor or injector as dpf is usually twice as much. You could honestly probably find used from someone who went the third option with low miles.

It took me three times going to the dealer to get my DEF system fixed under warranty. Keep on the dealer if you bring it in to get fixed. It’s typically not just a computer issue.

Glad you kept the truck (at least for now). I had a timing chain issue with my 3.5 eco and although it was a pricey repair, it doesn’t compare to the cost of the new ones, then add in the cost of your upgrades. My truck does everything I need it to do. These aluminum bodies last forever, even in the salty world of upstate NY.

It’s been a long while since I’ve left a comment. 😊I couldn’t resist throwing my 2’cents in on the new truck. Just think of all the mods you’ve spent years making there are just too many to count, you would have to start that whole tedious process all over again. I for one am very glad you decided to give the old girl another chance. I personally think it would be far better content to sort of document the kinds of things that start to go as the truck ages and accumulates mega miles. All the other channels trade their trucks in after just a year or two, sure it’s always nice to get something new and pretty close to six a figure price tag. Mature people make rational and deliberate choices. Love your channel keep up the good work.
