She was Malaysian, which is more than 90% identical with bahasa Indonesia. About 15 years later my daughter, husband and their daughter lived in Bali for 17 years. They built a business that thrived for more than 12 years but the terrorist bombing caused their customer base to dry up. They had another girl and stayed for a few years more and then returned to the USA, primarily for the older daughter to go to college. I'm over 80 now and those 2 years in Java were the best years of my life. Best regards, David

Mt then he asked us if we'd like to go to the palace to see where lives and we chuckled and said yes. Believe it or not, he was a prince and did show us around inside his istana. I've seen several comments from Indonesians complaining about Americans/Westerners, "Vet them" or "don't encourage the entire western civilization". Hmmmm...is it something to do with Indonesia being mostly muslim? because we see plenty of muslims here in NYC that seem to hate America and Wester civilization yet they come here anyway. In America we don't treat people this way, everyone is welcome as long as they enter legally and do not break our laws. So, what is different about Indonesia with all the hate?

@@gobofraggel7383not really Muslim culture, more eastern culture and lack of law enforcmemt E.g. public display of affection is fined in Indonesia, but will the politeknik really do that? @uk.kencot28 күн бұрын
@@gobofraggel7383I don’t think it’s a direct causation of being a muslim majority country. Indonesia is unique in a way that we are very diverse, but we are diverse within the inside. We have hundreds of indigineous ethnicities, but we don’t get many exposure from foreigners. Unlike Westerners whose more eager to travel, most Indonesians don’t have passports and don’t migrate too far from where they’re from. Since we are young, we are taught with our local wisdom, such as politeness (being friendly and engaging towards everybody including strangers are considered as polite and seen as positive in general), willing to abide with local rules (if you know “dimana bumi dipijak, di situ langit dijinjing” mindset), respecting whoever is older than you, no indecent acts in public, no nudities, etc; and we tend to live within a group that shares the same values. Being inside the group is a huge thing for most Indonesians, because the group validates the presence of its members. That’s where religion taking its part. It becomes one of the most common places where you can be validated by a group. Moreover, Islam shares a lot with indigineous Indonesian value (cmiiw) or at least has been embedded to our society for a very long time ago, so it feels natural for Indonesians to follow Islamic value in their daily life, even if they’re not Muslim. Younger generations might be more open though that really depends on which social structure they are in, but biggest part is their social and income’s class. Let’s take an example of my personal experience. I grew up in Jakarta, and when I moved to Yogyakarta for University, I was seen as someone who is unreachable by some of my peers, even though they might never had a convo with me. They thought, I was this girl coming from big city with big pocket, and a lot of them associate Jakartans as arrogant rich people. While in fact, my family is also Javanese (Yogyakarta is a special region in Java, so yes they are Javanese) and I am fluent in Javanese, I’m also Muslim, and the only difference was just I grew up in Jakarta. So, yeah, what does the Indonesian think if you are a foreigner with so much difference? Must be worse than what I had, isn’t it?

Retiring comfortably in the US these days is almost impossible. I'm planning to retire at 59 in another country outside the US that is free, safe and very cheap with a high quality of life and good healthcare. Here in the US more people might face a tough time in retirement. Low-paying jobs, inflation, and high rents make it hard to save. Now, middle-class Americans find it tough to own a home too, leaving them without a place to retire.

The cost of living keeps going up, up and up!! Rising prices have affected my intention of retiring at 62, working part-time, and building my savings. Lady, you look so sweet and kind. Indonesians are raised to respect the elderly, especially women. The social norm is to always prioritize the seniors, and we respect our parents, especially our mother. We do not want to mess up with Mom, never, I think everywhere you go, people will be more than happy to help you. in Islam, great respect is given to both parents, but the mother is given a higher status. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized the importance of the mother by stating, "Your mother" three times when asked who deserves the most respect, and then mentioned "your father" fourth. The mother is the number one priority in terms of care and respect, and this will apply as well in our daily lives when seeing elderly women. Of course, there are also not-so-nice people even in Indonesia. Welcome.

Hi Kate, Dan &Umi Stiff here. We live about 5 hours north of you in Jepara. I am an American and retired here 10 years ago. Our village, Tempur, is inside of the old Mt. Muria Volcano. A couple, Tim and Marisa Notier, stopped by to visit and did 5 videos of the place. They have been traveling the World for 7 years on their motorcycle. Their KZbin channel is: 2up and Overloaded. Look for the one named; Village inside of a Volcano Indonesia. It is very easy to get here via Van travel. We would love to have you come visit. You made the right choice. Cheers

Jogja is certainly one of the nicest places for non natives (Indonesian) to live. If you have a USD 3000-per-month job which can be carried out remotely and want to live in a less expat-populated area like Bali, living in Jogja, Bandung, Solo, Malang is heaven. I lived in Kansas for 5 years. It was nice and I enjoyed it. I met many nice people, too. If your expertise is in industry or engineering-related field, living in the US is challenging and I think I will enjoy it. So, it's up to each person. But for ibu Kate or anyone who wants to enjoy a more relax, more affordable, and more peaceful life, living in one of the mentiioned cities is a good choice.

We will be part of the G7, the top 7 largest economy in the world, in 2030, just like the current U.K. In 2045, No. 4, right after the U.S. The recent gov't that just ended yesterday was the best gov't we've ever had. 300 projects at his first term and another 300 projects in the 2nd term. The new president I predict will be pretty good as well, despite the new president's past. I see him genuinely liking the last gov't objectives and shows sincerity already. He is keeping half of the Ministers from yesterday's regime and vow to continue the last president's objectives and goals. The new president has even recruited a few activists from the 1998 riots. Maybe the new president is trying to ask for forgiveness from the activists. Jakarta's governor is up for an election this month, and I am convinced the guy Kamil will win. He has international awards, and the current Economy Minister won the Best Minister in the World in Dubai about 2 years ago. She was the Minister of Eocnomy for 20 years and will continue to be that. She worked for the World Bank before as a director.
