Depending on the type of wood, you could sand the heck out of the upper cabinets and maybe find the natural wood under is a lighter color worth covering with a clear finish but ... oh the work involved! A very light yellow above would be great, and a more grayish color below if the light blue / grey bugs you. Perhaps you could leave the wood, but take off some of the top doors? Open shelving would allow you to lighten up the feel with lighter colored baskets... Honestly, it’s all such a personal choice!

I am a painter by trade and have made a career out of it. There are a few things I would suggest. To get rid of the texture from the blue paint you will need to aggressively sand. Perhaps with a 100 grit paper then once smooth enough switch to a 220 to smooth it out more. Once they've been sanded well I recommend using a 1/4" micro fiber 4" weenie roller to apply to the larger flatter surfaces and for a brush i recommend a 2" Purdy Glide or 2" Purdy clear cut glide. For paint i would use a hybrid enamel. Not sure what you have for paint stores around you but I know Sherwin Williams sells one called Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel. Its a soap and water clean up product but very durable and pretty easy to use.
@lindaratzel78354 жыл бұрын

I never hesitate to paint. Wood is brown. Sometimes you might not want brown. If you sand between coats of paint you will have a much nicer finish. You have a lot of warm tones already and blue is cool. Big contrast. You could bring some warmth to the lower cabs and tie in the warm tones by switching to brass hardware (on all cabs), very in right now! If you repaint if you go more blue green or even a grey green (it would be muted if you add grey) it would be a bit warmer. Love you guys. One day we will be out there!

Journeyman painter here. You can use a roller but lay it off with a brush and use a quality brush (Purdy or Wooster). No foam anything. You’re better off just brushing them all out. Rough it up with 220 sandpaper to give it some “tooth” as painting over a gloss, without sanding, doesn’t allow for proper adhesion. Paint one cabinet door or drawer then make a decision rather than painting them all and having to repaint them all. Good luck! Beautiful RV!

When you said you turn on the lights the color was different than you thought it would be. What if it is the light bulbs not the paint, now hear me out on this. At Lowe's they had (and may still have) a display on light bulb choices, with bulbs in these little box displays. It looks like each light is in a different colored background in the box, when in actuality the paint is the same color in all the boxes, the light bulbs are actually what is different. The different "shades" of light changed how your eyes perceive the color. They are not different color bulbs like red or blue, they are different shades of light with the white light spectrum, they use different names like warm light, bright daylight etc.. I may not be explaining it well; but, if you can see the display you will see what I am trying to describe. Changing bulbs may be easier than repainting, food for thought.

@stevekramer41904 жыл бұрын
Steven is spot on here. I came here to say the same thing, but see he's got it nailed! One further point- I'm specifically looking at your LED lighting. It looks like bright white, which is the "common" color we get in LED bulbs, unless you specify differently. Buddy with an LED install buis told me about it when it came time to change the LED light strip on my awning. I choose a "natural" light, which adds more yellow and warms it us some. The Bright White is close in frequency to blue in LED speak, hence the reason the blues are coming out in your paint. Also, next time paint a large pc of cardboard outside. Once dry, take inside as a giant color swatch. Also useful in determining the color in natural outside light vs inside LED. My apologies if this has been fleshed out already by other peeps! Cheers, Steve
@meanderingmyrrkat87984 жыл бұрын
You explained it very well and it is true...also, most paint colors are matched under natural daylight bulbs...and paint always dries darker. I am currently restoring a vintage 85 Huntsman which was built with all wood cabinetry, beautiful but very dark and weighty...I am painting the wood cabinets and the interior walls, all are being heavy sanded, primed with oil based Kilz, then the finishing high gloss enamel again oil based...I've removed all cabinet doors to help reduce the weight - which ended up being 100 + pounds. Rollers really shouldn't be used on small surfaces, a good natural bristle brush, specifically Purdy, eliminates air bubbles. Just my humble input 😎

I'm old school, I like wood cabinets to look like wood. What you guys did looks good though. Kind of an interesting contrast between the dark wood and the light paint. If you are having trouble with the roller leaving a rough texture, thin the paint a "little" and change to a shorter nap paint roller. Be careful what you thin the paint with if you want a high gloss. Phil, an old guy once told me and it really works, Happy wife, happy life. Keep smiling

It's so funny to see how many folks wouldn't paint their cabinets! Since we couldn't go out in our trailer, we decided to paint it. One thing led to another and we have done all the walls and cabinets. And new floors. And we are in the middle of doing a new epoxy counter top since the old top no longer matched the colors of the walls and cabinets. For painting we learned that sanding and cleaning the surface was key. We also used the paint and primer combo from Home Depot, the Behr Marquee. It's expensive but worth it. Our big mistake was to put a separate primer that was supposed to be "sticky". It was an absolute bust and we had to re-sand and repaint some of the areas. Were we used only the Marquee it turned out great the first time. We did the cupboards a medium grey and the walls a lighter grey. I love it! We put in vinyl plank floor and will be finishing the epoxy counter tops in a week or so. I'm practicing on some small pieces first so I figure out what I like. All in all, I really love the whole look. I didn't hate the old colors, (except the floor and the fake tiles behind the stove...hated that!), but I absolutely love the lighter colors. And yes, I would do it all over on another trailer if I had the chance :-). I'm glad we weren't living in it when we did it! I'll try to remember to send pics when it is all done and put back together.

Tips shared by a professional cabinet refinisher.... don't use that paint line, it's not durable enough for cabinets. You want to use either Benjamin Moore Advance or Sherwin Williams ProClassic, I'd suggest satin or semigloss vs gloss. Get the paint sample in the same sheen. You need to do a lot more prep, unfortunately. You want to wear gloves when using those tack cloths! Lol I'd use BIN primer, clean the brush with household ammonia/ water 1/2 ratio. Sand and tack cloth after each coat of primer and paint. You'll need at least 2 coats of paint. Use a 2" angled Purdy brush and a 4" microfiber roller with the lowest nap available which should be 3/16 nap. Also, since you'll be rolling it on, after you've sanded it down, use a 220 grit sander after each coat and then before the 2nd coat, do a 220 then tack cloth and 320 grit and tack cloth. Keep the painted surfaces as flat as possible since the paint lines recommended have a self leveling agent in them. Best of luck.

However if you look at the before and after pics of the total paint jobs on FB RV interiors, you notice either all white with darker countertops and black appliances etc Some fabulous results there. Or. a darker base cabinet color like darker red, darker green , darker blue or Med. Dark gray to ground the look, contrasted with the white uppers and coordinated colors of wallpaper pattern etc on the walls. Perhaps taking the colors of the existing backsplash into the mix. Hope this helps.

When I was in the Air Force in the mid-70s, right after Viet Nam, there was very little money. Enlisted Guys kept getting caught drunk on base during work hours. To make sure that all the enlisted guys were ‘busy’, the senior NCOs had us lower ranked enlisted guys paint the inside walls of the open areas, twice. They picked a slightly lighter shade of green the second time so you couldn’t skip anywhere. And this building had originally been a missile assembly building, so it was BIG. That single fact caused me to leave the military for good. Too bad, because I went and got my degree, I could have had an outstanding career there. I just couldn’t deal with the pointless BS.

Cabinet color sure brightens the kitchen area. I had natural (lighter color) wood cabinets in my last rig, but it did require wood treatment, (furniture oil), every few months, to keep them shiny / newish looking and not drying out / having a rough texture / appearance. Light colors assist with the upbeat mood feeling. Your finished paint work looks very nice.

Like the top bottom dark light. We are going dark on bottom and light on top. Suggest a more brown tint for white, more towards almond etc. Use a wood grain sealer after sanding. Takes away grainy texture. Clean with TSP (there is a new chemical replacement for TSP which is a lot nicer to use ) then sand all surfaces as first prep step. Other than final paint coat, I use cheap brushes and rollers. Use good stuff on paint coat $$$.

We don't full time, so it's very doubtful we'd paint our cabinets, but 'to each their own' and so long as you're happy in the end, it was well worth it! I even hate painting in our 'sicks & bricks' but so far, we find we're outside any time the weather is nice, thus we don't spend as much time inside as you would either. Great job on you're donation count....fabulous job from those that gave, to you two from start to finish!

Never would I ever paint the beautiful wood. But, since you did paint the wood. The color isn’t right. A little to white. That’s hard to keep clean as well. A little darker but not sure what color? I’m sure y’all will sort it out. Keep up the good work. Oh by the way ... I saw y’all driving by last week or the prior week. So cool. Take Care

I had a remodeling business. I used a good acrylic paint on cabinets. I never had problems with streaks or bubbles in my paint t and it held up much better than an enamel.

Come on everyone, if you live in a space you are not happy with the color, why not just paint it! But, make sure you do it right, and research colors, try before paining everything. I painted all my kitchen outdated red oak cabinets gray, and never regretted - LOVE them. It turned out very professional like they had been sprayed! I did not have much experience but found out that if you use a de-glosser 1st followed by a high quality paint, you can save yourself a lot of grief and time. I recommend going to ACE hardware next time and getting a bunch of samples, and them when you decide on the color get the Benjamin Moore Advance cabinet paint along with a water base de-glosser. The paint self-levels and is super easier to work with. Also, research designer bloggers for top paints used in cabinets. Designers usually go with BM due to its quality and true to color results. Grays are hard due to different light in different spaces and influence of other decor - it either turns out too cool and blueish or warm and beige. My personal suggestion on your space it that due to the warmer colors of your countertops and other surrounding area, it may flow better to use a warmer tone of color and refrain from cool tones. I would have gone with a White Dove or if you still want that gray feel, Gray Owl ... all from Benjamin Moore. A purty or Benjamin Moore soft 4” brush and smooth surface small roller will do it for you! Good luck! I love your videos! Truly enjoy following your experiences traveling around the country.

I've painted twice, no regrets. My suggestion to you is choosing the lightest color on your backsplash for the top cabinets then a bit darker shade for lower cabinets.

I like the look. When you paint again, here are two pointers I picked up on KZbin; paint one drawer or cabinet door first and LET IT DRY. Second, when you paint, keep a couple of foam rollers (clean and new) handy, and gently roll the dry roller over the fresh paint. It will smooth out the brush and roller marks and make it look like you spray painted the cabinets. Love your channel.

If I had done what you did and had the same level of dissatisfaction with the result I would live with it a while to see how it looks in different light and different situations, assuming I had the opportunity to do so, of course. In our house we repainted the walls downstairs after we replaced the carpet with tile. I HATED the previous paint, and did a LOT of homework into what color to paint the walls. It turns out we chose the exact same color as before (it truly was the best match, though I wasn't thrilled), but we got it in washable latex satin finish instead of the flat spray-on the builders of the house had used. The different finish certainly changes the perceived color, and clean walls (instead of dirtied flat paint) also helped. But I found that as I lived with the new paint I noticed other characteristics of it that I also appreciated, things I hadn't thought of at all until I lived with it. If you can afford the time to do so I recommend living with it a little while, perhaps taking the rig out and about to see the new paint in different environments.

No way would I paint beautiful wood cabinets! We have a ‘97 Airstream with solid oak cabinets and wouldn’t touch them with paint! Kind of made me sick to watch this.

Great job. Very brave. Big help is foam rollers and self leveling paint is the trick. Benjamin more makes a water base/oil base paint that dries to a sprayed look. Love you guys.

I'm sure you knew you would get LOTS of comments on this one! We are still in the stick/bricks and have recently painted most of our trim. We left our balcony and stair rail stained wood, everyone loves the touches of wood that go nicely with the wood floors. House projects galore while we shop for our new home on wheels. Hoping to go see a 33aa tomorrow, but trying to not get too excited as it is over budget and I don't think they will come down enough! I like the painted wood, but agree it is a little too "baby blue" at least in the video. Glad to hear Phil's wing is feeling better.

We did have our kitchen cabinets redone by professionals in our stick home, it requires special cabinet paint from someone like Kelly More that’s self leveling and it took a few days of preparation sanding. I don’t think I would paint the inside of our Entegra Insignia though, way too much wood work. Love watching you guys though, have fun and stay safe in these difficult times.

Rollers always leave a texture. You can roll the paint on and then back brush with a Purdy paint brush. That will help get rid of the texture that you all ready put there and you can add floetrol to latex paint to help get rid of brush strokes etc. Good luck!

You do what makes you happy. However, I always do a sample spot and let it set for a week. Wife and I did that for our huge living room wall- then another test spot, then we had a totem pole of spots. After 1 month we both agreed on the color and LOVE IT!!!!

Well, I am a painter. I think the job you both did on your cabinets is great quality. I agree with you on the color, tho. It should only take one more coat tho and make sure to use a clear coat finish to protect your hard work. Water based polyurethane might work (ask the pros at your paint store). Your on the right track. One last sand and tack cloth before the last coat. Bing Bam Boom and you have one more peaceful quite day together painting (fun)! It doesn't have to be perfect, just awesome!

I admire your thorough approach to this project. Lots of attention to detail. I painted over our kitchen cabinets years ago using a fine, foam-roller (prime + finish coat) and it was smooth as glass. I agree with your comments about the colour - it is quite a contrast to the brown-stained wood and countertop. I would roll a new colour right on top of it ASAP (for best adhesion). Good luck!

I love that you painted!! I love a white kitchen and especially if this is your home then, go for it. I would probably repaint and go with white or try Wales Gray by Ben Moore. That is a smokey gray/blue paint that we actually painted the trim above our bed in our 5th wheel. Also we painted the bunkroom cabinets in white. We used Rustoleum chalk paint (find it at Home Depot or Walmart) as our base and did not have to sand. It comes in colors but the finish is not what you would want. (very chalky) Chalk paint is ideal as it adheres to anything and won't scratch off. So I took the linen- white, Rustoleum chalk paint to Sherwin Williams and they matched the color and I was able to get it in satin to finish it off. Easy!!!
