So my question would be if you had to make a decision on one of these roofs what one would you pick?

Coming from a commercial roofer of 25 years. EPDM is old tech. It also requires a chemical weld at all seams TPO & PVC are similar. Both use heat welds at all seams. TPO is stiffer and less flexible than PVC. PVC is easier to install and detail around penetrations. PVC is typically a few cents more than TPO per foot. They are both easy to maintain. One of the reasons I chose my evening is because of the PVC roof. Hope this helps some of you out.

There is a product on Amazon called Class A Customs Superflex rubber roof. I asked a question on that site and someone said that it is pvc. Would you happen to know about this product? I am planning on replacing the beat up EPDM roof on my 2007 Keystone toy hauler fifth wheel with this superior new pvc product.

Thank you for explaining the different styles of roofs. The warranties on these roofs are pretty much useless unless you follow their maintenance guidelines to the letter and can prove you did the maintenance. A friend fought with Heartland a couple of years back over an issue and actually had the problem addressed by his dealer but the manufacturer still denied paying for the repair. I sealed all the joints (front and rear caps and all protrusions) with Gaco's seam tape then used their liquid tap over the seam tape. Once all that was completed, I applied 3 coats of Gaco RV Roof Coating (silicone-based) to all areas of the roof and seams. I am reasonably satisfied I have a water-tight roof and have noticed a reduction in heat build-up in the trailer when sitting in the sun.

How do you determine what type of roof you have? Just bought a 2010 Excel Peterson Limited. The roof visual looks dirty but not damaged. I was thinking of coating it but don’t want to use the wrong product. I’m looking at Tropicool silicone or liquid Rubber. I have seen videos of people using something that does not bond well with the roof membrane and what a mess. Just want to get it right the first time.

Do you have any videos on the different types of slide out mechanism and how to maintain them I am not a big fan of the cable set up from what I have read I wish the cable could be changed out to hydraulic
@BTBRVReviews5 ай бұрын
Switching from a cable system to a hydraulic system isn't practical, because the cable system uses the sidewall for support. Typical hydraulic, rack and pinion, or through frame systems use the frame of the RV.

Our 2020 Riverstone Legacy has the newer “Dicor DiFlex II” roof topper, but I’m not sure where that fits in this roof material overview. I found this interesting and informative and didn’t realize there were that many types of roof membranes on the market. @BTBRVReviews4 жыл бұрын
Well, it's depends on what type of fiberglass. On travel trailers and small fifth wheels it's likely a sidewall Gelcoat vs a higher end unit with a hand laid or sprayed fiberglass using resin. There are many brands that use Gelcoat for the roof material in their lower end units.

I understand this doesn’t apply to full-timers but it’s crucial for a camper to be under some type of shelter when not in use. My camper is 3 years old and looks new because of it. We camp once a month.

As a plumber I have to side with PVC. Why? Think of your plumbing vents on the roof of your home. They never chalk or crack and remain strong even after 35 years. PVC HAS excellent UV tolerance and does not even yellow in the sun. There’s another way also but I am still developing it. When fully developed it should be a lifetime roof. Our RV’s deserve that. Especially for the cost.

The most important part is the thickness of the roof membrane and in stallation which you failed to mention as most rv roofs are paper thin to keep weight and material cost down which results in seperation from fixed openings and tears and puntures from loosening deck fasteners (staples) tree limbs or foreign objects tracked on to roof membrane,. Compare single ply roofing systems for comercial and industrial applications where useful life is up to 30yrs and not 10-15 yr prorated RV roofs that are poorly installed. The biggest threat to an rv is water damage and the manufacturers put the minimum resources into it IMHO. Your just promoting their products.

As a RV Roof installer, I can say the info here is pretty accurate. All of these roofs are decent and durable. But with their strengths, they also have their drawbacks. Runner is very durable but can dry out over time. They adhere well (with older glues, but that’s a different conversation). The PVC roofs are sensitive to chemicals and react. Most of the issues I’m seeing with blowing up roofs is caused by the reaction of the vinyl and the butyl and sealant. Also the sealant is good for about a year honestly. Each year it should be carefully removed and new applied.
@philipdishongh50744 жыл бұрын
Jason, Can you further explain a couple of things? What chemicals are PVC roofs sensitive too? And, which sealants are only good for about a year? Which areas of the roof are you referring to?

TPO is absolute trash. I work for a company that owns a lot of commercial properties. It's just not a durable material. We have properties with TPO, EPDM, PVC, Mod Bit, Tar and Gravel, etc. TPO has the most problems by far and that's across a pretty large sample size. It's just not durable.
@BTBRVReviews4 жыл бұрын
Not the same material. Even PCV in commercial applications is different. PVC tends to be thinner than TPO on buildings where as PVC is a few mils thicker on RVs.
