Abandoned Mine Exploring with Tom and Julie

Abandoned Mine Exploring with Tom and Julie

Жыл бұрын

In this abandoned mine explore we experience the mine explorer's find of a lifetime after rappelling down the shaft of this 1800s gold mine. This is a return to the beautiful mine that we visited two weeks ago and featured in a previous video. If you haven't seen the video of our first trip to this mine, here is a link to that.
• One Of Our Favorite Mi...
We brought our climbing ropes and gear to rappel down the 200 foot deep shaft. We had no idea what to expect or if there were even any drift levels. The shaft is very steep, nearly vertical, with no skip track or wooden infrastructure. Before we could descend the shaft, we had to secure the trap doors that would open and close to allow the skip to be raised up and to dump into an ore car. They had come loose from their hinges and were hanging precariously over the shaft by a single rope. After securing the trap doors, we rappelled down the shaft and found a working level about 80 feet down. We also go all the way to the bottom of the shaft to see what is there. After exploring over 1000 mines in the last eight years, we have not seen any with better artifacts than this one has.
We hope you enjoy the video as much as we enjoyed this very rewarding explore!

now that is some cool find you two ....the harder to reach areas always produces the best stuff ...looks like they were using a skip bucket to hoist the muck with ....really loving that Carbide lantern ....that is very rare indeed ....good job ....really nice looking Powder box ... good job making the 200 feet .... you might want to use a chest ascender ( Croll ) ....we smashed that like button and now we expect you guys to rappel more shaft ....so you know what we are gonna say huh

Yes, some good finds in that small drift. Apparently, not many people have been down there. I figured they used a skip bucket with that flat car. We've been down a lot of shafts on rope over the last few years. That sort of thing is coming to an end at my age. (67) Thanks for liking and commenting, Jeff! Much appreciated Sonny J.👍😄

Yes, the rope length worked out perfectly. We had more rope at the top but we would have had to climb back up to get it. As I was going down, I thought for sure the rope was going to come up 10 feet short. Yes, some very cool finds in this one. We see a lot of foxes at the bottom of shafts. They must come into the mines to hunt rats, at least that's my guess. Thanks for the comment, brother Eddie. Hope all is well with you!👍😄

Hi there, ! Tom & Julie, you's two certainly put a lot of hard sweat and work into this mine explore, I would have taken the rare miner's lamp out ,and donated it to a museum, because someone will eventually take it for themselves,and the explosives box as well , better for it's preservation,and more people to see and enjoy. Very kindest regards, STAY SAFE ❗
@TomandJulieMineExploring
@TomandJulieMineExploring Жыл бұрын
Hi John. This one was a bit of work. It's a physically demanding hobby. My thoughts on the museum is that there is already a mining museum in just about every town in these mining areas and very few mines with artifacts left in them so I like to leave things as we find them. I appreciate and understand your view on that, though. Thanks for commenting!👍😄

Hello Julie and Tom. Well that's really really cool finding those artifacts at the 80 foot level. I would say that since those artifacts are still there that you're probably the first they have ever been down there of all the years and all the videos I've ever watched about mine exploration this is the first time I've ever seen a Miner's lamp. That was truly an awesome find. And also finding that cart that still had wheels on it. Excellent video that was definitely worth going down at least to the 80 ft.
@TomandJulieMineExploring
@TomandJulieMineExploring Жыл бұрын
Hello Stephen. You don't see many lamps like that anymore. The flat car was fun to see, too. I think you're correct that nobody has been down there in a long time. I think one of the reasons no one has gone down there is that the trap doors at the top were hanging by a piece of rope over the shaft. I didn't show it in this video, but we had to haul them up and secure them before we could safely go down the shaft. Sometimes, it pays to do a little extra work like that. Glad that you enjoyed the video and thanks for commenting!👍😄

I have never seen a dynamite box up close before so that was super cool. The ones I have seen from a distance looked like pine boxes. This box you found looks like hardwood? With the dovetail edges it almost speaks of military grade box construction. Given the age of 1944, I wonder if that Dupont box was originally military surplus from WWII war effort? Great stuff. Kudos to you an two. AWESOME sauce!

I knew a guy that used a lamp like that over fifty years ago. He couldn't get it to light the time that I was around so I can't say that I ever witnessed how bright it may have been. Have you cleared the center of that car, you might have found a pivot for a bunk. My guess is that it was one half of a pair of cars used to haul timbers, rail, or other long material. Thank you for going the extra mile on this awesome mine.

Hi David, I have used a carbide headlamp for a job I was working in the late 70's. They are surprisingly bright. I wouldn't compare them to a high output LED, but they work. I have ZERO knowledge of climbing, but that Jugging looks like a last resort when all else failed. You guys are amazing!!
@TomandJulieMineExploring
@TomandJulieMineExploring Жыл бұрын
There are numerous ways to ascend a rope. The easiest is by using a powered ascender. It is a battery-operated device that is heavy and expensive. You can also use two ropes and foot ascenders, which is easier but requires more gear than the method we use. I don't think it took more than half an hour to jug up 200 feet. Some people spend 30 minutes on a treadmill, we spend that time getting a workout on a rope. Thanks for commenting, Ken!👍😄

Thanks for another great explore you guys. A difficult rappel is a sure fire way to keep the people out who tend to loot these awesome historic artifacts. So neat to see them safe and sound down there. Looking forward to your next video!

That's exactly right, Brian. If you can drive up to a mine and walk in, there won't be much for artifacts. Thanks for the comment!👍
