It’s a wood building.Still the largest free span wood structure, last I looked. My Dad worked in the mill that was in here ,in the forty’s Fifty’s. It was a big mill , but inside this building it was tiny. The plywood part would create its own rain clouds . Dryer tenders had to wear rain gear or get soaked . Elk an deer wondered in and out when the doors were open. It was magnificent when you’re four years old . Still is . Long story short , there used to be two , stupidity ,,, saw one burn to ashes an Memories.

Hi Russ - We visited the museum in June of 2021. It is worth going back again. They have added so much more than what you videoed two years ago. Even in the airplane display. I don’t think there was an empty space in that room. Oh the history…. I agree, it is a great place to take the kids. You should see the display of fire trucks and engines now. You won’t be disappointed.

Amazing building and aircraft! I worked for General Dynamics (Lockheed now) in Fort Worth in the late 80’s. The structure inside is huge and very long. To see those F16’s lined up on the assembly line was something I’ll never forget! Thanks, Russ!! 😘

My family and I were just there earlier this week. The building is absolutely gigantic, and they filmed the mothership landing sequence for Close Encounters of the Third Kind in a similar hanger in Mobile Alabama. To see one in person was a treat, and to be able to walk up and touch the aircraft was worth the admission price alone!

Hi Russ! I don't know about you, but I don't think a blimp would be my first choice for transportation in a war zone! Really cool building. I'll bet the whole town can hear those doors opening. Thanks! That was fun! What a great summer! Stay safe! ✈️

Hi Russ, thanks for the video on the air museum. The last time I was there it wasn’t that fancy. You walked thru the giant sliding doors. At that time they had a WWII carrier fighter plane my dad flew. There is an air museum in Madras, Oregon.

There are 2 blimp buildings like that at Moffett Field, here in the San Francisco Bay Area. We used to have an even bigger blimp building, but it's skin was coated in asbestos, so all that is left is the skeleton. One forgets how big they are until Air Force One (a 737) is parked next to it, and the airplane looks tiny.

LisaMarli Supposedly Moffett Field's Hangar One will be restored by 2025. If you believe Google who is in charge of it.

If they didn't plan on restoring it, they would have just torn it down. They're raising private money to do it, so it might take a while.

Great video as always Russ. We visited the air museum 22 years ago. There used to be three of the blimp hangers. They lost two of them in a massive fire longtime ago. They were storing hay in the two that are gone. Spontaneous combustion started the fire. When you were mentioning about the honey comb look. All of those hangers were constructed from wood beams during WWII. I think there was a video in the theater describing how the men built it all by hand. They broke some amazing construction records putting those buildings up.

Noticed a lot of water on the floor of the hanger, imagine trying to fix a roof leak on this building! The Houston Astrodome was plagued with this problem.

Hi,If you ever want to see a blimp Hanger with the doors open if your ever in Orange county city of Tustin has two hangers and one of them always has at least one set of doors open .The only difference is they are made out of wood inside but the doors are cement, they look exactly the same as the one you went to.

Akron, Ohio has a huge hangar similar to that. Owned by Goodyear. My grandfather used to work there and I remember him saying that there had been so much testing done in there and the building was so huge that it had developed its own climate atmosphere inside. He said there where times it would actually snow or rain inside the building.

I’ve been and seen this outfit. I doubt that any thing I could say would prepare someone new for the scale of the place. There are 6 sliding doors on each end, all over a hundred feet high and weighing 60 tons a piece. It’s over a quarter of a mile long. This building could swallow the Queen Mary.
