They didn't smile in the old portraits because the photo took so long to expose that they couldn't hold a smile steady long enough. It came out as a blur. Also, as you say, they had a different life. We take smiling for granted. They didn't have as much to smile about. Thanks for the tour! I will definitely stop there when I travel through Kingman.

Can you imagine what Rt 66 was like in 1950 which was when my parents took us on a vacation to see Hoover Dam, The Painted Desert, The Petrified Forest, and on to Missouri. I remember it being so barren it was almost eerie. Glad you are doing this video. I haven’t seen Kingman since 1986.

The Golden Knights' parade to celebrate winning the Stanley Cup is tomorrow. They're expecting what the police called "A New Year's Eve crowd." Russ, if you travel through Northern New Mexico, in "Grants" along Interstate-40, you will find "EL MALPAIS", a region covered with volcanic ashes eons ago that New Mexico turned into a State Park well worth exploring. And when you are around Las Vegas, go climb Mount Charleston, another "must-see" natural wonder. RICHARD

The picture of the man bending down to the toddler with all the family's belongings tied to the old ford; that's how dad came out west and I have an old picture of them just before they left Oklahoma. Grapes of wrath - Oklahoma dust-bowl depression going west to look for work. I believe he came through kingman on their way to so cal. He mentioned there was no bridge where they crossed a big river, (I assume he meant the Colorado), and took a river ferry somewhere. I've not heard of such a thing but there must have been one back then somewhere. That generation sure had it rough,....and then went off to fight in a war. Whew.

As a fine art photographer I got curious about why people didn't smile in old photos, so I did a little research. It happened for two reasons. One had to do with the fact that early photography was influenced by portrait painting. People didn't smile in portrait paintings because back then wide, toothy smiles were associated with drunkenness or madness. If they did "smile" it was a slight grin, ala Mona Lisa. The other reason they didn't smile was due to long exposure times in early film. People had to hold very still when their photos were taken, and it's hard to hold a smile for more than a very short time. Enjoyed the video. Looking forward to the next one.
@sisterluke
@sisterluke Жыл бұрын
These people back then didn't get their photograph taken everyday either. It's not like every family owned a camera. It was a big deal to get your picture taken and that very well may be the only photograph of you, with the exception of elementary school classroom photographs, a wedding photograph, military, or a mug shot or passport/identification. I'd imagine during the Victorian/Edwardian times, as you researched, it might have been considered inappropriate to show your teeth in a proper photograph. Pictures were supposed to be serious.
@goodoakpress
@goodoakpress Жыл бұрын
@@sisterluke The Victorian era was very different indeed. They certainly didn't have dental care like we have today, but they did have sugar. I remember one of my school history books talking about how tooth loss was a problem back then, which is probably another reason why you didn't see toothy smiles in photos. People may have had missing teeth.

The depression lasted longer in Arizona because it was a hard life before the dustbowl years even happened. Many mines closed in 1942. So they went from just scraping by, to depression where banks failed in the 30's, one meal a day for many people. Then with rationing from WW2, probably more jobs but still........it was out in the desert. You know they smiled when it rained.
@goodoakpress
@goodoakpress Жыл бұрын
@@FireShine-ss4sb my mother was born in Phoenix in 1928. Her father was an automobile mechanic, so while they were hardly rich, they were able to get by. Still, it's hard for me to imagine what the summers must have been like without air conditioning. My mother said people used to sleep on their back porches. Phoenix became a boom town after the war. They had evap coolers by then, and by the time I was born in Phoenix air conditioners had arrived.
