I spy my Grandpa's Letterman Sweater at 11:37! He used to run a barber shop in downtown Killbuck. He passed away in August of 2019 at 88; so glad to see it displayed.

Great video Russ. I live about a half hour north of Millersburg, and ride my bike from Fredricksburg, to Holmesville, Millersburg and then Killbuck. Its the only bike trail in Ohio that the Amish can ride with their horse and buggies on. Its about at 36 mile round trip and well worth it. Been in that theater and that too is a gem.

We are originally from Wooster, now retired near Daytona Beach. Used to hang out visiting friends in Killbuck, and went to the movies at the old Duncan Theater. Been to all these small towns that Russ has shown on his videos. Great seeing Killbuck, Millersburg, Sugarcreek, Winesburg, Berlin, Walnut Creek, Bunker Hill, and Trail. I remember going to see the Cuckoo Clock when it was at Alpine Alpa. All great videos.

What a cute small town! I love small town museums. There are good ones in lots of small towns where you wouldn't expect them. The docents, and even the people in the gift shop tend to be volunteers who love the place and will tell you all about it. I also stop at small-town libraries when I'm on the road, to use their WiFI, and they're also very interesting.

Hey Russ, I believe those large “wheels” were actually’Mill Stones’ from a Gristmill where farmers would bring their corn and grain to ground. There’s a restored one not far from me here in western Washington, it’s powered by a water wheel in a creek. Gotta love small towns USA. 👍

It does flood quite a bit in that area of 62. It's swampy on the North side of that road. I remember that old theatre. They had a midnight showing of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. I was the only person in there. It was shut down for some time after but my cousin and my brothers went there after they reopened it. My cousin swears he felt a rat run across his foot. So we then started calling it the rat palace.

4:36 The building on the left has an unusual wall angle/configuration that, to me, screams one-time service by a railroad right-of-way. That museum was really neat, Russ, especially the dinosaur bones. Imagine tooling down Main Street and having a T-Rex run in front of your vehicle. I'd get the h-e-double-toothpick out of there as fast as possible! Glad you decided to visit your friend otherwise we all would have missed this. Enjoy. Edit: Just looked at Google Earth. The building to the right at 4:36 apparently is the old railroad depot. Should have known.
@Lilybets3 жыл бұрын
The big building at 4:36, used to Rice Chadwick Rubber Company. I remember when the trains used to run. There was a track right next to the building. I lived just down the street from there. My parents both worked there, so did I. Most of us from Killbuck worked there at one point in our lives.
@michaela.chmieloski31963 жыл бұрын
@@Lilybets Thanks for the information, Betsy, it is much appreciated. I love local history no matter where the "local" is located, and it's always appreciated when someone with firsthand knowledge can "fill in the blanks". When looking on Google Earth the size of the rubber company's building screamed "town's lifeblood" to this old chaser of ghost railroads. Many times a town such as yours had that one major industry that enabled everyone living there to make a living--either directly or indirectly. Thanks again for the info. Be well.
@Lilybets3 жыл бұрын
Yes, the old depot was across the road from Rice Chadwick. It was pretty run down when I lived there but they've fixed it up now. The train tracks split there. One on each side of main Street. One ran along railroad street, hence the name and the other crossed the creek and ran out across the bottom. Interesting fact, a president, I wanna say Teddy Roosevelt but I can't be certain, it was before my time, stopped on the train in Killbuck. Right by the church just up the hill from Main Street. When I was just a kid, the trains didn't run often but when they did they went very slow through town. We played on the tracks. Sometimes, they were under water. Killbuck is very low and is surrounded by swamps and the creek.
@michaela.chmieloski31963 жыл бұрын
@@Lilybets That's interesting about the tracks splitting as they ran through town. I looked at a USGS map from 1915 and there was no indication that such occurred. Need to look at a map of more recent vintage (1940s-1960s). Will look into a POTUS coming to Killbuck on the internet when I get a chance. Sounds like the line was run down (deferred maintenance) when you were a kid, hence the slow speed of trains when passing through.
