Very nice job. I really liked how you had the camera right there in plain sight of what you were working on. So many others talk, talk, talk about what they're going to do and then don't even film that part. They jump past it so you never get to see them actually do it. I was here to see how difficult it would be to get those seals lined up, and you showed it perfectly. Unfortunately, I'm replacing the gray and black valves in a 28-year-old 5th wheel and both valves are inside an insulated compartment. I had to cut a big access hole in order to even see them. Now it's a waiting game for the valves to show up. Thanks again!

Love your videos... they're always worth the watch, even when one knows how to do the specific topic. If I might make two suggestions on this project: 1) You would likely have found this task much easier, had you used a smaller and less bulky 1/4" drive socket, rather than 3/8". The lighter weight and size of the smaller drive would greatly enhance the ease of use. This is particularly true for applications in which the valve is in the center of the underbody (like my Minnie Winnie). 2) When tightening your bolts/nuts, it would be better to alternate sides... first the one that was hardest to reach (as you did), then the one on the opposing side. Finally the remaining two (which will also be on opposing sides). Also, plan to tighten all bolts/nuts in at least two steps, somewhat more loosely first, then tighter on a second round... maybe even a third. This will reduce the likelihood of cracking the valve. Of course you would do the same in all such projects, such as tightening lugs on your wheels, etc. Keep your great videos coming!

@@RVgeeks You're welcome. Shortly after my comments, I started to replace my own gray water valve. I have a 2000 "Minnie Winnie" that I purchased in 2014. I keep in good shape and I've done many upgrades. I spend about 6 mo a year on my sailboat in the Bahamas and most of the rest of the year traveling in the RV. With COVID and various other challenges, I haven't been on the move since returning from the Bahamas in Oct, 2019 (where I had a front row seat to Hurricane Dorian). I'm about to head north for the summer and decided to replace the valve before I left. Unfortunately, my project turned out to be a bit more complex than yours. I doubt that the valve has been replaced in its entire 21 years. All four nuts were solidly rusted to the bolts and the heads of all the bolts were so badly rusted that no wrench (or channel lock) would grab them. I eventually got them out by grinding off the heads with my angle grinder. What took you 17-1/2 min to do and film took me over 4 hours (trying various other methods along the way)! Hopefully, it will last another 21 years (although it's highly unlikely that I will).

Great instruction! What do I do if my gray water valve is stuck closed and water is in the tank?? Just get ready for a real mess?
@RVgeeks Жыл бұрын
Hi Jeff. First off, having this problem with the gray tank is FAR better than with the black tank! That said, one way or another, you need to get that valve open. We'd suggest having the replacement part on hand before trying anything. Then if you need to use a vice grips to yank that rod straight out, just be sure to keep a second hand on the pipe to avoid pulling too hard on the plumbing connections. Even if the seal around the valve is stuck/jammed, you should be able to pull it out if you pull hard enough (again being sure to hold the pipe to avoid breaking the drain lines). By forcing it open, you will almost certainly have to replace the gray valve immediately, which is why you'll want to have the replacement part on hand, probably this one, which is most common: amzn.to/3WuJSXN By coincidence, we just replaced ours this past week for only the second time in 18 years. It was getting VERY hard to pull, and we didn't want to wait until it was stuck. Hope this helps.

👍🏻. Nicely done. A few shots of silicone lubricant (never use petroleum products on rubber) on the rubber seals at install and blade handle every month will help extend the life of the valves. Routine maintenance, I do the toilet seal at the same time.

Thank you so much. You provide great information and incredable resources. I was wondering if you had some information on another problem I am having. I have a similar set up in my RV as you show in the "gray valve repair" video. I have 02 Newmar Dutch Star DSDP 3858. The problem I am having is a leak coming from my fresh water city fill hose. I use to have the hose reel like you have, but I had to bypass it because the brass connections were failing when I would fill the tank. I bypassed the reel with a 3' braided clear hose. It goes into a cartridge filter similar to yours. I turn the valve to fill the fresh tank. Once full, I turn the valve off and assume all is good. Recently, I have been getting a leak now coming from the fill hose. It feels like some back pressure pushing the water backward. Maybe the the valve used to fill the tank is failing. Any thoughts. Thank you
@RVgeeks Жыл бұрын
Two things.... first, our rig came from the factory with a backflow preventer on the fresh water hose.... positioned where the hose comes off the reel and goes into the RV. It failed, and we replaced it and have had no problem since. We'd suggest confirming that your backflow prevented is working. Second, check out this video, which we think shows a similar plumbing setup and repair to your rig: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g5vchmWbeNGDmaM

I had to take the main pipe off because I couldn't pull the gray pipes apart to remove the gray valve. It was too tight. I'm glad I did though. It gave me the opportunity to clean the seals on the black valve. They still looked fine but grimy. I also found that the gray pipe coming out of the camper had a flaw from the factory. Have you ever bought pvc pipe and a thin plastic piece is still attached inside the end? Like it didn't mold correctly? This was preventing good flow from my gray tank. Not to mention the hair, other plastic pieces and screw that were lodged in the gray pipe.

I recently purchased my first RV (Grand Design Reflection 313rlts 2016) to live in full time, it will be stationary. I have learned a lot in just the few weeks I’ve had the trailer thanks to some really good friends who have been RVing for years. But I do have a question for you and hope I don’t wear out my welcome here! Lol. I am hooked up to city water and have a regulator and a filter on that line. The water pressure in my bathroom sink is good, the shower is pretty good, but the kitchen sink is pretty low pressure. I also seem to have intermittent air in the lines in the bathroom sink, I don’t notice it in the shower at all, some in the kitchen.
@RVgeeks2 жыл бұрын
Hi Suzanne. Congrats on your new RV! Grand Design makes a beautiful unit! The first thing we'd try would be to turn off city water and try running off the onboard water tank & pump. That might help to isolate the issue. If it DOESN'T happen on the pump, then that might help determine where in the line the issue is. If it does, then you know it's something else. Also... be sure that any/all of your winterizing valves are turned in the correct position. Sounds like it could be that something's not set right. We'd also suggest checking out the Grand Design owner's forum: www.mygrandrv.com/forum/index.php Would be really beneficial to sign up there so you could post your question. Could be something specific to Grand Design's plumbing design that someone there could answer super fast. Let us know how you make out... or if you have follow-up questions, Suzanne. There HAS to be an answer to this! 😉

@RVgeeks5 жыл бұрын
Great question, William! We didn’t use any type of lubricant because the instructions didn’t call for it, the valve worked smoothly right out of the package (possibly pre-lubricated?) and the old one never got lubricated in all those years, so we figure it’s probably okay! If you do want to use some type of lube, Vaseline is probably not the right one, as it’s petroleum base and could damage the seals. We’d recommend using plumbers silicone.

I have a 45 gallon waste transport container on wheels that could catch it all (to dump in septic tank) but then it will be more water weight than I can physically carry. Any ideas? Guess I’m gonna have to stop using it until it’s fixed.
@RVgeeks3 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear Bonnie. When you say your handle is broken, did the entire rod slide out of the housing, or did the handle just come off the rod. If the handle simply came off, you could pull it with a pair of pliers. If the rod came out, you can try inserting it back in and rotating into the right to try to thread it back into the blade valve. If the rod came out and you don’t have it anymore, you can try buying a new black valve and using the rod from it to do the same thing.

We have this exact issue with our black tank. However, we have a cable pull system on a Travel trailer. My other concern is that its a 2018 Grand Design, so I'm surprised its failed so quickly. I wonder whether the valve just needs to be cleaned, or maybe its a cable issue?
@RVgeeks4 жыл бұрын
Could be either, Brazen Brits. We've heard of a lot of situations with those cable-pull valves where the cable disconnects and/or isn't actuating the valve correctly, allowing it to leak because it's not being closed 100% to seal. If you can get under the RV and inspect it while it's being operated to see if it's something obvious. It could also be clogged up a bit and need to be cleaned (not a pleasant proposition). We'd try the above first. 😉

I wish mine had been that easy. I have a Thor class c. The gray tank valve started leaking and I knew that I could replace it myself. When I disassembled the old valve I didn’t have to flex the pipes apart they sprang apart. Whoever had done the plumbing on it had misaligned the pipes and they were under tension. I added a flexible connector to solve the problem. I’ve done other maintenance on this camper and I wonder sometimes if there’s any pride in workmanship or quality control in those factories. It’s like we old carpenters used to say jokingly “good enough, you can’t see it from my house”.

Handle came off in my hand as I was trying to dump. Luckily it was ONLY the gray valve. Repaired there in the campsite, in true Cousin Eddie fashion, which I’m sure the neighboring campers loved. Ours was a little harder to do because the valves are underneath, near the center of the camper. So instead of exploring coastal Maine, I spent half the day exploring the underside of our camper. Fun. In other news, I still maintain that you sound a lot like Elliot Spitzer; not a bad thing really, it’s a strong voice...you should consider voice acting or politics.

Voice acting and politics probably require the same skillset! 😂 Sorry to hear about your exploration in Maine, but glad you got it fixed.

Nice video. Can you tell me what size nut and bolt came with the package? Mine arrived without any.
@RVgeeks19 күн бұрын
@@davidloehle8321 I’m so sorry, but I’m not sure, and we sold the RV last year! I suggest taking the valve to Home Depot or Lowe’s and finding a nut that will spin onto it.

Thank you for sharing. What if my pipes don't flex to pull out the old valve?
@RVgeeks2 жыл бұрын
There needs to be at least a little bit of flex to get it out. Might have to try pressing the sides apart just a little more firmly.

Really appreciate the video!! My husband recently installed an Acuva. He wanted me to let you know that he really appreciated your installation video on your Acuva. He said it helped him a lot installing ours. I have a question? You have mentioned that your RV is 14 years old. Did you purchase it new or used and have you had other RVs? Your RV doesn't look that old. It when you take excellent care of them. Have safe travels 😊💕🙌🙌

Thanks so much, Janice! Our first RV was a 2002 Fleetwood Bounder, and we then bought this one new in ‘05. We do indeed try to take good care of it. Thanks for the nice note. 😊

Very helpful! Thank you. I need to replace both, I will start with the grey first. Is the black as easy?
@RVgeeks2 жыл бұрын
Same process, but be extra sure to thoroughly dump and flush out the black tank first! 😉

Why not lube up the inside of new valve before installing?Thanks for this video,
@RVgeeks5 жыл бұрын
It apparently came pre-lubed, as it worked perfectly smoothly, and the instructions didn’t call for it.
@amarmot36355 жыл бұрын
I would have treated the rubber seals with 303 before inserting them. Very good demonstration, thanks.
@RVgeeks5 жыл бұрын
We didn’t use any type of lubricant because the instructions didn’t call for it, the valve worked smoothly right out of the package (possibly pre-lubricated?) and the old one never got lubricated in all those years, so we figure it’s probably okay!

Nice video but you did not address problems with knife valves that continue to leak. I have a 25' 2010 Chateau and would like to know if anyone else is having trouble with their tanks being so tight together that the rubber gaskets on the new valves become damaged when trying to install them. (Yes, I have replaced valves on a Jamboree more than once with no problem,) One repair shop had to drop both tanks on my Chateau about 5 years ago in order to get the gaskets on! ($330 for a job I did myself in the past for the cost of a new valve - $20) It's leaking again and I'd like to find a better, and cheaper solution. Thor does not admit to being responsible for something I suspect was a manufacturer's defect. Any help would be appreciated!

Having worked on a water dept. for years I think I would of rotated tightening the bolts on the valve rather than tightening one up then the other right across from it. But, other then that, good job.

Have your slide-out awnings always been green or did you update them when you had the coach painted? The awnings look great actually
@RVgeeks4 жыл бұрын
Great eye, Loda! We did indeed update those to green, and we think they look great too. They should never have come from the factory with white slide toppers in the first place. 😉
