EXCELLENT would not have tried it without this video. One comment and one tip. Where it says "now would be a good time to replace the worn strap," it could have added " Now IS the time to insert the strap." TIP find the caption text, copy it to Google Docs, edit it out the general comments and number it as steps. Although we watched the video many times, it was great to have the notes. We hand wrote them... knew there had to be an easier way.

Funny story: while we were trying to get the awning back in order after some wind damage (but while the wind was still a factor), the pull strap picked that very moment to break away from the drum. Lesson learned.

I never post anything, but had to make an exception here... Great how-to video! It saved us some money by not having to hire the local RV repair shop to do the work (plus they couldn't have gotten the RV in to do the job for weeks!) We watched the video this afternoon and then replaced the awning on our Class A motorhome this evening. The job turned out to be pretty easy to do, considering I didn't have a clue how to do it prior to watching this video. Way to go guys. Great job!

I did not have assistance when installing the awning fabric on the RV. I rolled the fabric the long way and folded it in half. I carefully climbed the ladder with the awning over my shoulder. Getting the awning started was the hardest part, but once it started it slid down the track easily. I went from the rear of the RV as I had better ladder positioning. Once all the way on I cleaned the track and removed the old fabric as I went. I spent several hours worrying about how I would get it done, and about an hour actually getting it done. Yes, it would be nice to have had help but just doing it myself made my day complete.

Great video! I did install mine by myself in 4 hours .lots of breaks and figuring out how to tackle the next part alone. It is possible, but I wish I had a second person without question. Pay attention to the small details. Like trimming the cord before installing on the tube. That took 30 minutes of cutting in place to rectify my mistake. Silicone spray was a god send!

My wife and I are senior citizens, and we replaced our awning today. It took three hours, but we had pre-existing hiccups to work out. A sudden wind storm ripped our awning in two, which left our tension springs in the "extended" position. I released tension from both ends, and started fresh. This video helped "de-mystify" the situation. We only made one mistake...we forgot to install the pull down strap before rolling up the awning and setting it in place. Thanks for taking the time to make the video.

I did the same thing, except remounting the tube. I didn't roll it up, but brought the arms down and put the drum in the arms with the awning rolled out. That was far easier than climbing up the ladder with a loaded tube. Then, after spacing the awning, rolled it up to adjust. Worked out better for us old men that way.

thank you for this fantastic video. My husband and I did this in a mind blowing FULL day. "Why?", you may ask. Rusted screws. My 2007 awing was never replaced. It took one hour to remove the first set of rusted screws. If you note that you have rust on your screws, add penetrating oil and time to your list of items to have handy. The best method that worked for us was penetrating oil, hit screws with a hammer (both sides if possible, and take a screw driver and hit under the screw head at an angle so that you are working in the space between the screw head and the main surface. When removed most of the rust adhesion seemed to be under the screw heads. This takes TIME. Be patient - we did not strip screws but that would have been another headache Other problems we encountered. 1) The pin, for keeping spring in place on the L side of the awning, I used was a small file for sharpening chain saws (I believe). The handle broke off as we were stepping the old awning down. I recommend using a nail or a cotter pin. That's what we used later in the process and with much more success. 2) Did I mention rusted screws? I have a Carefree Colorado and they use screws - not rivets on the awning arm where the spring is. As I was unwinding the spring, the one surviving screw (we did not notice that there was only 1) broke. That added a lot of spring adjustment time at the end. But hey, we learned a lot. 2) Our awning had never been replaced and cutting the old awning cord was a lesson in patience. 3) Add time to go to the hardware store to find replacement screws. I did not want to put rusted screws back on. We debated using a wire brush, but............. Chose the safer method. 4) Awning handle keeps falling off. We haven't resolved that yet. The rivets are not holding. 5) Sigh, there seems to be a funny kind of cotter pin that is on the top part of the awning arm. I don't know what it is or how to put it in. It is up and currently kinda functional. We just need to find solutions to the last 2 issues.

My wife and I changed ours in about 90 minutes. HOWEVER.... After removing the tube ends from the supports and starting to unroll the awning, I was on the side with the pin in the end cap. Rather than holding the tube I grasped the end cap. The tube twisted a little, removing tension on the pin (a very small screwdriver) and sure enough it fell out. I was stuck there having to hold the tension of the cap and not able to reach the screwdriver on the ground. It was an "interesting" situation having to ask a kid walking by to please hand me the tool... All in all it worked out. Thanks for the great instructions.

My Dometic awning is 25 years old and this process worked great. The only difference was on mine you insert a nail on the side of the left end cap to lock the spring instead of using a screwdriver to insert it through two holes as described in this video. Also, mine only had two rivets. Remember the end cap and spring mechanism are connected as one piece so once you remove the rivets just pull the end cap off with the spring. Great video.

@RVgeeks
@RVgeeks 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Norman! A couple of things.... First, can we confirm that you have the same make and model we used for demonstration in this video (the VERY popular Dometic/A&E manual pull-down awning.... model 9000)? If that's the same one you have, the next thing to look for is the hole itself. It's very small, and can be hard to spot. If you've rotated the roller slowly, looking looking for that hole, and are sure there isn't one for the awl, the next thing we'd suggest is to release the tension on the spring instead of pinning it. You'll need a vice grips, and you can carefully follow the instructions on page two of the repair manual. Here's the link. Hope this helps! Please let us know how you make out. www.rvrepairmanual.com/manuals/awning_replacement_instructions.pdf

Your instructions were perfect and made the replacement easy. I could not use a punch to "pin" the end cap as mine was flat and the pin hole was hard to get to. I used a common nail which held perfectly. My mistake was I forgot to remove the nail and it bent over inside the tube. I was able to cut the head off the nail and push the bent piece in to the tube. All is fine now. Thank you for your Video..

Didn't get the awl in correctly and it managed to unwind itself. But I added the same amount of turns back in as I did on the right side and the awning pulls down and retracts just fine. You guys are the bomb! We were completely clueless on how to purchase and install a new awning for our little 22ft hi-lo RV. This video took us straight from how to measure width for purchase of awning to complete install. Removing the tension was intimidating but we just played the video and watched at intervals during the install and it worked perfectly! Took us about 2-3 hours to install. And one tip from us ... the awl we bought was way too big. Tried a pick which was also too big. Not sure if they make different diameter ones or not. We ended up using a hex wrench instead of an awl or pick and taped it into place with duct tape. Also, we had two awning anchor screws (not one)... so check that too!

I saw Tom and Kate’s video with you guys doing this exchange of the fabrics. Something you can try next time on an old school manual awning is take the flap from a cardboard box and cut it off. The longer ones work best. Place it between the inner and out arm and close the arms on it. This is a safe gentle way to center the arms exactly where they need to be. Also looks like there awning could stand be be adjusted up one hole higher on the stops. Loving what I’m see. I used this method my self to change a fabric last week at work with no help from anyone.

I used this video today on an older (2005) roadrunner with the original awning in really bad shape. I’d say it was at least 95% the same as mine. Only difference was the hole to stop the left hand spring was hidden under the old wire of the awning, only found it after I took it off and drilled out the plastic bead. Overall a very helpful video, took me about 3 hours with 2 guys.

Getting ready to install new awning. This is a great instructional video. Most videos I've seen is basically this procedure with some variations but I've always wondered why you can't just pull the awning all the way open, It will lock in open position, cut a slot in the endcap at the location of the awning rod, prop or hold the tube up a little to get some slack in the fabric, slide the awning out, slide the new awning on, unlock the awning and let it roll back up. Done. Am I missing something?

Hi Ron! We’ve never tried it that way, but it does sound like it might be challenging to have the entire awning unfurled while trying to get one side out of the roller tube and the other side out of the RV… and then get the new one back in. If you think it’s something you can manage and want to give it a try, we’d love to know how you make out. But we think it could be really difficult to handle doing it that way.

Great video, had no helper and was able to replace a 16' Awning using your technique. I would prefer a helper, but a couple of suggestions if you have to go it alone. I was able to "push" the the top bead all the way through (Use silicon as suggested in video.). On the tube beads, I set the left end of the tube (1/3 from end) on the bottom run of a step ladder and slid the bead in just like the video showed (Silicone). Also have to put a step ladder in the center to roll down and roll back up. You can set the rolled up awing on top of the RV and then climb up there to position the end caps. Thanks again!

This video is great to assist with awning replacement. My model was slightly different but this helped tremendously. Overall from gathering of tools to completion took about 2.5 hours. Remember if you decide to swap to a new pull cord that you put the new one on before you rivet the spring back on. Ask me how I know. Otherwise had no real issues through this.

Great video, and thanks so much for sharing your wisdom! We've been putting off replacing our own slide topper awnings but you guys make it look so easy, what could go possibly wrong! Hah, just kidding, and funny outtakes. I can see how it's really important to do the prep work to help it go smoothly, lube spray, widening & cleaning the aluminum track/grooves, etc. And YES the RVGEEKSROCK! Great coupon code choice.

If anyone is curious. I struggled with my 21 foot dometic awning but finally got new fabric installed and its working. If you have a Dometic 21 foot. If you mess up and let the spring unwind during disassembly youll need to wind the torsion spring on the left side exactly 12 full turns CLOCKWISE and pin it before walking it up to install it in the arm.

The ratcheting mechanism makes tightening the spring easier, but if the spring is the least bit weak, it could come loose and fling those right at your face.

The crossbar on the A makes all the difference. ;) About those hats. They've both been washed a few times. If you air dry them brim down on a flat surface, like an oven rack, the brim will be less wobbly. Jon in rural BC, Canada

That's a great point about the A, Jon, since without the horizontal part, it would indeed be a V! Those are our ratty old work hats, so we think they're pretty much beyond help! LOL

How many times should we turn the tension of the vise grips flew around and unwound without us being able to count?
@RVgeeks
@RVgeeks 3 жыл бұрын
It depends on the length of the awning. Google your model number awning, and “fabric roller tube assembly” you should be able to find the owners manual online with that info in it. It’s usually about 12-16 turns.
