We visited Nátthagi, where the lava is now filling slowly. It’s obvious that the lava will go over the highway in the end, the only question is, how long will it take to reach the road. Also, there was an earthquake in Brennisteinsfjöll (The Sulphur Mountains) but it’s probably just a shift of tension in the area.

Amazing to see! Roman from Gut'n Tog hiked that valley last week before it broke through. I recognized that big rock immediately. The interesting thing about this volcano and it's fissures are they are directly above the tectonic plates where the Eurasian and North American plates come together. It's exactly on the lines. Awesome!

I’ve been waiting for the latest update from Valur. I didn’t actually realise how wide the lava flow was down in the valley until now. I was a little concerned when Valur was describing the new type of lava being like slivers of glass & wonder if the strong wind could blow the glass & people could breathe it in or get it in their eyes. That could be deadly. I’m sure the experts wouldn’t let people go there if it was too dangerous though. Stay safe, best wishes from Australia 🇦🇺❤️

There's a stupid person born every minute of every day. That guy didn't have the common sense . He said he hiked at home often. He has evidently never been around a volcano

Could we make partial dams in a zig-zag pattern so lava must travel 9X as far to reach the road?

I was just wondering if they could make a quick series of small berms across that big flat field. I think it's so liquid right now though that it's dangerous to put equipment near it.

So much video is available regarding this natural phenomenon, but the professional sound quality of this channel is unmatched. Notice how the remote individual microphone continues to work fine as our intrepid reporter turns his back on the camera while hiking away. Notice the incredible build-up of that jet engine sound as an effusive event occurs in the volcano's crater during a long sequence at the end of his narrated report. This is my favorite media outlet in the world right now.

I think they knew it would eventually overflow but they were hoping to divert it long enough to coax it to a different path.

Welcome back Valur! In Hawaii, those glass threads are known as Pele's Hair after Madam Pele, the volcano goddess who is said to live in the crater of Halemaumau on Kilauea (see it's not just Iceland that gives difficult names to its volcanoes). It's usually formed from fire fountains, or where lava is moving fast. Please don't touch it - it is glass, it is REALLY sharp, it can irritate your skin and cause serious injuries if it gets into your eyes or lungs. The light in today's Newscast is amazing - Art has done a beautiful job of catching the unearthly colours of the ground, the glow of the lava peeking out of the blackness - and that incredible Nordic sky (I'd almost forgotten what a blue sky looks like - clearly you're having our summer!)
