The Reykjavík Grapevine

The Reykjavík Grapevine

3 жыл бұрын

The volcano in Geldingadalir is becoming even weirder and has now transformed into a kind of fire geyser. Currently, all of the craters have now dried up except the one scientists call Number Five. And said crater is behaving like a geyser, spewing lava and fire into the air. When we were there, the lava fountain reached probably over 200 metres and it’s clear that the volcano area is transforming even more than we expected.

Too funny! I live in the Pacific Northwest USA. More on the East side of Washington State. A week ago the temperature was 78°F by 10am. By 12pm it was 40°F and the clouds showed up. Started to rain, then sleet, then gropple, then snow! An hour later KABLAM!!! We had an epic thunderstorm followed by a fast warm up to 80°F. You could see steam rising from the ground. This started another round of cold, rain, gropple, snow plus Thundersnow! And a Partrige in a pear tree (quail really)! I gave up taking the garbage out, put my nighty back on and went back to bed! Now I just found out a friend in Texas is getting a new truck! All thanks to the hailstorm that took out the first new truck. *sigh*

I am glad that I finally found out that there were actually 5 volcano's in the area. Thanks for all you do. I was looking for the views of the volcano's from March and April.

I think the lava flow (in that valley) should be named "Valsdalur" ... ( Valur's Valley ) ... in Icelandic. ('hope I spell that correctly). It would be appropriate, for all your work there, and your informing ALL of us in the world of these events... excellent work and dedication. Thank you, Valur (and Polly)... --- Doug, USA

@@roodborstkalf9664 That is (probably) the correct spelling, Roodborst. I speak, read and write 16 languages... Icelandic is NOT one of them. Thank you for your kind help in correct spelling of the word ! Cheers, from U.S.A. --- Doug

@@eyja3 Thank you, Eyja...I made my best guess...but I am not an expert in that language, at all. I still think it would be a fitting tribute for him...entertaining and very timely, informative reporting. He captures the world's attention, and delivers the news of that event tremendously well. Thank you for your kind note...my best to you and your family, and to everyone in Iceland. --- Doug, Florida, USA

Once again, you've taken us to the mouth of the beast! Stunning! It reminds me of an ancient saying - "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth". This is like being there! Thanks once again.

When BoB first erupted all the shots were from a single viewpoint and you could see the lava gradually encroaching and filling up the shallow valley and evaporating the surface puddles. It would be very interesting to see a view from that point today (or as close as it's possible to get) to see the change in the landscape. Any chance you could do that for us.

Would love to see you use the power of your press pass to sponsor an RVK Newscast with a collaborative discussion between Phillip Ong (geologist) and Duane Dupont from Hawaii PODD and IS geologists. Hawaii also has effusive volcanoes. Hawaii PODD has a structured approach to discussing volcanic factors like tilt, gases, GPS changes, and earthquakes. IS geologists would provide the IS data. What a great show that could be.
