Great video. A few things that come to mind.....the tip about the door locks is absolutely fantastic. Same theory for the storage compartments. I am amazed at how many people don't realize most locks are the same. Another thing, using a 30 amp dog bone to plug in a 50 amp RV doesn't give you the full power as a 50 amp hookup. A 30 amp is 120 volts from the pedestal. A 50 amp is 240 volts from the pedestal. A 30 to 50 dog bone doesn't make 240 volts. I couldn't tell from the video if you have one or not, but a connection to hookup the grill to the units propane is a must for me. I have an older RV so it didn't come with an external propane hookup. For less than 10 bucks, I put one in myself. Bought a long propane hose and the grill works off the units propane instead of carrying around a separate tank. Can't wait for your next video. We plan on buying our 4th RV within the next 2 to 3 years. I will be doing tons of research prior to that purchase. 1 more thing.....apparently that 4th egg isn't going to hatch. That would make a great souvenir if you retrieve it, blow it out, and preserve it. Just a thought. Sorry this is so long, no need to reply. Keep up the great work and happy camping!

Good stuff Mike! My weakness in the trades is electrical. We are constantly tripping the 30 amp. We were going to move to a 50 but the Birds started moving in the next day..LOL Hoping this isn't doing damage to our electrical? We have ordered 12' ft propane hose with quick connects for the grill and new fire pit. Those little tanks are expensive and they burn fast. Just hoping that we get the same pressure because we love the heat that it throws right now. Great idea on the egg. Thank you for all of this😀👍

The number 1 essential for a full time RVer is a dehumidifier. You make a lot of water and getting it out of your RV is essential. It makes the air more comfortable too! I think your weboost antenna is too low. I mounted mine on an extendable painters pole and it works great. Having a weboost literally the difference between getting calls or Not getting calls when inside the RV.
@RVOddCouple
@RVOddCouple 5 жыл бұрын
We have heard this but never had a problem with moisture so far...You are right with the weboost but nothing works for anyone in the resort we are in right now. This is the first time since we started 6 months ago that we have no internet or phones. Brutal! It's also the longest that we have stayed at one park. We love the those Birds! 😂
@JustPlainCommonSense
@JustPlainCommonSense 5 жыл бұрын
RV Odd Couple I didn’t think I had a problem with moisture either. The dehumidifier ran nonstop for a week pulling moisture out of everything. If you shower, cook and breathe, you have moisture built up in there.

We just purchased a back up camera for our RV and we are now saving ourselves from embarrassment from the arguments and yelling at each other when I'm trying to give back up directions! That is so worth the money! Love your videos and I have a list written of other items to get from watching this particular one. Also, you probably already know, (unless you have a composting toilet), to protect the black seal from cracking inside the bowl.......drain the standing water in the bowl out first, then with gloves, rub a little Vaseline on the black seal. I've been told that it makes the seal last longer and prevents cracking and/or water leaking out down to the black tank. I hope I made sense on this but you probably already know this.

Hello! I have an older fiver and I installed a built in 30 amp Progressive Industries surge protector with the led display. This eliminates the need for a external surge protector. It was very easy to install and monitors the voltage, cycles, amps being used, and fault codes. The warranty and customer service is second to none. I may be looked at by others as not having any surge protection for my fiver. Thieves may pass by my power pole or be tempted to steal my Marinco pistol grip shore power cord! Lol! Best Wishes!

Your list was pretty comprehensive and helpful. My wife and I are gearing up to purchase a travel trailer although we have no plans to full-time it. Our chief reason to RV is to travel with our fur babies (3 dogs and a cat). We don't like leaving them behind and RVing is a wonderful way to see one's country (Canada) or the neighbour's country (USA). We have researched tow vehicles and the safe weights that they can haul as well as the extra "bits 'n bobs" one needs to operate an RV safely and to provide a certain level of comfort and security. Channels like yours really do help and we have started gathering commonly needed items like power cords, power cord adapters, water supply hose, sewage hose and tools. I related to your past video about letting go of many of your tools you had amassed from your sticks-and-bricks. In my case I don't have to let go of anything in any permanent sense, but deciding which ones to bring along for RVing is a huge challenge with overall consideration being final weight. The baggage door locks being common between many RVs was an eye opener for me too. Fortunately there are solutions, but I will wait on that one until I have the actual trailer in my driveway to ensure I get the right replacement. As for the Steller's Jays, I had never heard of them before moving to western Canada. They're a common sight here and their nests are all around where I live in British Columbia. It will be really neat to see the babies take flight. Keep doing what you're doing. Ignore the bozos who are only there to throw stones. There's a huge difference between offering constructive criticism and being downright mean or rude. Your channel is entertaining and provides valuable information based on real-life experience.

Happy that we have been able to help. There really is a lot to think about and the more you take the time to prepare the more fun you'll have. Watch your final weight and go slow for the first 1000 miles. Check everything when you stop for a break especially lugs. We love the Steller Jays. We had never seen this type of bird until we got to Yosemite. We are getting much better at ignoring the bozos!!! We pay much more attention to the Givers than the takers. Thank you David and Happy Camping💚

Excellent videos. Have been RV'ing for years for holidays, weekends etc and owned several types from popup, travel trailer and 5th wheel. Absolutely the best time with our daughters growing up. All set now with new truck and 5th wheel for our new chapter in life, retiring this year and look forward to larger trips. Many of the items reviewed are key, from a safety side the surge protector, tire pressure monitoring, backup camera and good quality air compressor are important. Appreciate the information on doors locks, have been reviewing to replace. Take care - Safe travel!

I just ound and started watching your uTube videos. They're great and better than any reality show. We have a 24ft trailer RV and I installed a 600 watt solar panel with a 440amp hour AGM battery bank. We can boondock anywhere and stay at parks with no electrical with ease. Also, we installed a tankless Truma water heater and that made it all great. I think these are 2 areas you should look into for other OC's. I am now looking into better water filtration thanks to you. God Bless.

Hope you consider this a kind comment. Good stuff on your list. We use a old Weber Kettle as a fire pit, if one is not at the campsite. Also have a propane one we use when fires are not allowed (we camp and boon-dock in Eastern Oregon) A good size outdoor fan is handy to blow the bugs away. We are always outside rather than hunkered down inside so a mister outside will help out on hot days. Happy to see my pet jays are doing so well. Safe travels.

Hi you two! Another great video. You asked for additional ideas of what people might need, so here goes: 1). an analog (mercury type) thermometer for both your refrigerator and freezer. We’ve owned two RV’s in our long camping life, one a fold-down tent trailer and now a beautiful Merceds Sprinter (Navion by Winnebago). They both had to have their refrigerators replaced. Poor or incorrect installations nowadays is quite common, and we had the one in our motorhome replaced under warranty. You’ve got to watch your temps and not just assume these absorption refrigerators keep and hold the temperatures in the “safe zone.” We have thrown out hundreds of dollars worth of food when the temperature not only hit 42 degrees (unsafe temp for extended period of time), but when we found the frig up to 68 degrees! A simple hanging analog thermometer could have helped save us a lot of money. It seems the manufacturers of RV’s don’t always consult the installation manual...just install so it will fit, and to heck if there is adequate breathing of the unit and air circulation. 2). That comes to another item for the refrigerator: a couple small battery operated fans to assist in air circulation in the refrigerator. 3). Tire pressure monitor. This is especially valuable when you take long trips in hot weather. Pressure increases with heat and could damage your tires or even cause a dangerous blow-out. 4). Ice chest... great to keep drinks cold, BUT it can come in very handy if you have refrigerator problems while on the road. Block ice works best and lasts longer. Anyway, I hope these few things help someone (especially new RV’ers) with very prevalent problems. Once-again, thanks so much for your videos. You guys are a breath of fresh air! ❤️🦝🌲⛰⛺️📷💻

Lol. I can totally relate to the backup camera. We have had so many disagreements and a few yelling about backing up the fifth wheel. Lol. Thank goodness we have grown and now the Class A has a built in backup camera system. When we had the fifth wheel it use to shake when the boys and us walked around. Bo matter how level we were. Then we discovered the wheel chocks and the stabilizer for the hitch. Oh glory days when we got them. No more shaking! Those baby birds were such a glorious sign God put before you. To remind you to take life slow, cherish each moment and that lifes to short and to treasure each moment.

Couldn't agree more on the back-up cam. It is, by far, one of the most useful devices I have purchased for my RV. The model I chose even allows us to see behind us while driving. I just bungee the display to my rearview mirror and off we go! That said, I have been both an observer and a participant in the classic "backup disagreement". It's practically a right of passage for RV couples.

Thanks for your channel, keep it up. This is one of those RV items you can't live without, and also allows you to get rid of a large object. I tossed my dish strainer and use a roll up dish drying rack. I use it to dry dishes, but can put hot pans on it as well. I also put bowls and the such on it, if I'm pouring from one container to another and if I spill, it just goes down the drain. Here is the amazon description "Sunblo Roll Up Dish Drying Rack, SUS304 Stainless Steel Over The Sink Dish Drying Rack | 17"(L) x 13.5"(W), Foldable, and Easy to Store, (Black) "

I’m getting tips from you and a few other channels that I trust, so that when we buy our Winnebago Minnie Winnie in a couple of years we will be ready. We won’t be full time, but we want to see this country while we are still somewhat “young”. Thanks again!

Hi Jeanne, The 4th egg never hatched. We only have 3. But it's actually a good thing. If it hatches late it's chance of survival is low because the bigger birds hog the food. And just because she lays an egg doesn't mean it's fertile. Sometimes she lays a 'blank". Minnie Winnie sounds like a cute rig! I don't think you have to go full time, but I do thing you have to take the opportunity to adventure while you can! :-) Thank you so much for the kind words. :-)

Hello all, I have a small weather station on my RV that I love. It give me some weather forecast, interior and exterior temperature humidity, wind speed etc. I remove the station when I travel and install when in camping. Washing machine is a great add-on. I have a small washing and spinner machine that I put in my bath. Some RVers don’t have much room. I put my clothes on a rack for drying. This prevent me from going to laundromat very often. Great video thanks for your time sharing!

I highly recommend a surge protector from my personal experience. I was a seasonal camper a few years back and a lightning strick hit an electrical box 3 campers down from us on our row. All 6 campers on that rows electric line had damaged except mine and one other other because we had surges. The damage on 3 of the 4 were so sever that their insurance totaled their campers. Like you guys said - you pay thousands of dollars for these campers and please just pay $200 or less for a surge. Love the channel-great videos.

A must have for me is a propane mosquito fogger. It sometimes makes the difference between being outdoors or having to stay inside. Another for me is a Coleman propane stove where I threw away the regulator that came with it and put a fifteen pound regulator on a twenty pound refillable propane tank with a hose connected to the stove. When we are grilling outdoors, it is nice to be able to do all of our cooking outdoors. Those little one pound tanks run out of fuel far too often and they are not refillable. Still another is a tie down strap for the awning. I have one that goes over the awning and another that goes under it. This limits the amount of up and down motion the awning is allowed and increases dramatically the amount of wind it can withstand. Caution, when the sun starts to bleach the strap over the top, it is also weakening it. I did not think about that and the top strap not only bleached out, but it broke in a moderate wind in Florida this winter. This allowed the awning to flop and it tore back from the roller. Lesson learned! When hooking up to the campground water supply, most people say to put your pressure regulator directly on the campground spigot. I find that it works a lot better if you put the water filter on the campground spigot and put the pressure regulator on the output of the filter. You can get better and more consistent flow rate (in your shower especially) doing it this way. This has gone on long enough. There are other things but these are the major ones.
@RVOddCouple
@RVOddCouple 5 жыл бұрын
We always appreciate the time that you take to teach us Carl!!! All Great information Carl! We also use a fogger. You're right on those little propane canisters, they don't last long. We were told that they are refillable. We'll check next time we are close to a hardware store. We will pick up a tie-down straps for awning. Great tip on awning strap, we'll keep an eye on it. I like the wp regulator on the Rig side of the hose. I don't like the sun cooking the water in the hose and then not being filtered. Thank you as always💚😃💚

Great tips guys; thanks. I think you are dead on with being true to yourself and accepting the "needs" and "wants" that will make the RV life enjoyable and acceptable. I watched a video where a guy compared different wheel chocks and it was amazing how little the trailer shook with the X-chocks compared to the others; worth the investment. I can see basically all that you have suggested in our RV future. It's been cool watching the bird family grow.
@RVOddCouple

Appreciate your feedback. Yes, we wanted to make this different than other essentials videos. This is not a "bare bones" to stay a night in an RV. This is "to make your RV feel more like home". We had no idea those X chock absorbed so much of the movement. Our only regret with those is not getting them sooner.

I think the both of you are simple amazing! Also I want to thank you both for all the help and knowledge you have past on to all of us. Thanks to you I cancelled my order for a new RV with camping world. It was a nightmare from the start. I reordered with Stoltzfus and I should have my Thor Sequence by the end of July. I am a retired N.Y.C firefighter and fire safety is something I would like to pass along. I would not use a dogbone to plug a 30 amp into a 50 amp. A 30 amp cord is for a 120 volt system to supply only 3600 watts. A 50 amp cord is for 240 volts and 12000 watts. If the increase in power flows into your 30 amp RV it could cause a fire or damage your RV. Thank you Danny.

Great list! We picked up our first TT yesterday and will start the moving in process today. First thing on the list is measuring the length of the camlocks, so we can get the new door locks and camlocks ordered and be the only ones with keys to them. Not only do you need a water filtration system, but we also invested in a zero water pitcher. The campground we’re staying at currently in South Dakota tests at 419 which is really bad especially after going through 2 filters before it comes out of our faucet. I’m very sensitive to all kinds of contaminants so it just made sense to invest in the Zero water system and back up filters. We don’t only stay in parks but boondock regularly so it’s very important to filter water properly. We’re also set up with solar panels as well. If you’d like a little advise about solar panels my husband would be more than happy to share our experiences (wins and fails)..

JT StrongArms/BAL arms help a lot with shake, maybe 90%. The JTs are easy to adjust without tools. Two-way radios are a must for backing. The plastic rugs for outside. For a "wifi booster" Ubiquiti makes a few products that will do the job much cheaper than the products marketed to Rvers. I use a NanoStation M2. It's an older product that is still in production that was primarily used for homes that have internet service delivered wirelessly. It does that some basic networking knowledge to setup, but for under $100 I can pull in the campground wifi signal at much, much greater distances.

Tire minder system. A suggestion, we are going to purchasing a single axle traverl trailer. My plan is to get the 4 tire system moniter the rv tires PLUS both spear tires. No one thinks about the spare tires. Our tow vehicle has a monitoring already built in. Just a thought to pass on. Keep you spares ready to go.

Okay, did you guys orchestrate that rocking RV imitation? LMAO! At least I didn't have a mouthful of hummus this time. Haha! You need to make a bumper-sticker: "If the RV is a'rockin' go ahead and knock. We're only doing laundry." :D

LMAO SR!!! We really didn't choreograph that move, but when we saw it we both laughed and loved it..LOL. We are so connected right now. Thank you for the laugh💚

After 40+ years, my wife and I have backing in a site down to a science. Back-up cameras didn't exist when we first started. It would have saved many a "disagreement'. #1 rule, stand in the back driver's side corner and remain visible in rear view mirror. Our glamping essential was a luxury Diesel Pusher with things like powered cord and hose windup and W/D. Love our Clam.

Isn't it funny how contentious backing up can be? I always stop and watch when a neighbor is backing up. It's so funny, especially when one parter is OCD. Luxury has definitely changed. I'm easing into the camping life. But admittedly I'm a glamper. Thank you for not judging :-)

I love the way you both say the truth. You'll respond to everyone that leaves a nice comment is so true. Keep up the great videos. Thank you. Sorry to ask, but how did you get your logo so large on the left side of your videos?

Thank you for the kind words. Glad you enjoy the video. No worries on the logo. We have a clear jpg that we size in the left corner. We add it ourselves. We use final cut pro to edit. Hope that helps.

About the "Zero G" water hoses . . . I changed over on 5 hoses at home, including a 25' one for the motorhome. 3 of them leaked at the connection the first time I used them. Made in China, and total junk! I'm glad I didn't throw away my rubber hoses.

Interesting. We haven't had a problem with ours but that's good to know. We'll be on the lookout. Thanks for sharing!

@@RVOddCouple I too read the reviews and was disappointed, now I don't know if I should get the Zero G? Too, you mentioned you purchased a 50' hose, but your video shows you have a 25'? Which one did you purchase? Two 25' hoses are expensive, but too, you don't have to drag out 50' if you don't need to. So, did you purchase two 25' hoses, or one 50'? Thanks, Kevin.

Kevin Deshaies we purchased two 25’ mainly because 25 isn’t enough to reach sometimes. Absolutely loved the hoses at first. They were easy to store, wrap up and didn’t tangle. About 2 months in they both started leaking at the fittings. Now I use them for black tank flushes and a sprayer. They haven’t broke but still have slow leaks

@@RVOddCouple Cool, thanks for the reply, I won't get the Zero G's then, thanks again! I just purchased a 35' hose, it was cheaper than a 25' hose, go figure!

Walkie talkies! Must have for hiking, going to market, or backing up they cannot be beat. Also stop into an army surplus store and buy a John Wayne can opener. You can wear it on a key ring and they always work. Nothing worse than pulling in for the night and go to make vittles and realize you left the main can opener down at the creek. Third must have is mineral oil and baking soda. Mineral oil add to your batteries periodically and baking soda to clean the batteries when you get to your destination. Your batteries will last longer and keeping them clean is so easy to do. I also had the Coleman like yours but I also carried an electric grill as well. Nothing worse than having steaks ready and no canisters. Nice to have a backup.
