Great videos! So sorry to hear about the diagnosis but believe your positive attitude and faith in God will see you through. Oil pressure switch - If I'm not badly mistaken, there are two types, a normally open switch and a normally closed switch. My old Onan 6.5 NH Series A has a normally open switch that closes when the pressure is up. To test it, you would ground the wire that's attached to it.

Thanks Martin , Great video, I have same Generator Onan 5500 HGJAB , older model 2003 Fleetwood Pace Arrow and about 350 hours! ive owned since 2009, Never had a single problem With the generator, Im glad to say! never had a big problem with the entire Motorhome, Its in tip - top shape, But i have never looked at those Slip Rings, ill do it on next service! I keep up on the maintenance every winter! Im not a full timer ,but love Tinkering with it in my spare time ! keep up the great videos!

Thanks Martin and Joanie for all you do to keep us more informed on our Rv’s. I have run a Honda 2000 for more than 8500 hours with no more than replacing an exhaust valve and spark plugs. Lucky maybe, but changing the oil after 75 hours whether it needs it or not and a little marvins mystery oil goes a long way! I don’t I understand why some people get nervous once there hour meters hit a1000 hours. You are right in saying a little maintenance goes a long way.

Thanks for that Patrick. Ya, I just bought a Honda EU 2200i for an emergency back up. Last winter taught me some lessons on having extra power sources in the event all power goes out. I can run this 2200i for 8hrs. using just 1 gallon of gas and pump 15amps into the coach which is plenty to operate the coach when no city power is available. To use my Onan generator to power up the RV, I'd be using 1/2 - 1 gallon/hr. depending on the load. This Honda is a great little unit. I'm going to be doing a video soon in the future on it and other things I've done to prepare for emergencies.

This is an outstanding series on generators! We have an ONAN 5.5 HGJAB on our rig. One operating glitch we had I learned through the school of hard knocks. On a trip to Alaska from Georgia on the Alaska Highway we ran across many miles of dirt roads that were VERY dusty- mostly in the Yukon and northern BC. Being absent minded we had run the genny for a good many miles to get some needed power on these dirt stretches. Many rigs, including 'bago gassers locate the gennies behind the rear duallies. That's not a good match for generators on the rig traveling dirt roads. The amount of dust and grit thrown by the rear wheels was awesome and it wound up in the generator compartment and thoroughly jammed the genny air filter, killed the engine and rendered the device useless until I could find a new filter. That turned out to be a long way south from the Yukon in Montana where I finally found a Cummins dealer. Thankfully there was no apparent damage to the genny except a totally jammed air filter! The moral of the story-- don't use or seriously limit using the genny in extreme dusty conditions-- especially if your genny is behind the rear wheels!

With the spark plug socket and the rubber insert is partially for drawing it out or putting it in,but also protects the spark plug from the socket from slipping onto the tip of the plug becoming broken and causing the tip to break

I have been watching you for about a year and your videos have been great. I just picked up a 2013 Tiffin Allegro this summer in really good shape. This is a huge purchase for me and I want to keep it in great shape and your channel has provided me with a good plan to operate and maintain. I would like to see a video on how you maintain your roof. Mine has a fiberglass roof like yours and I have cleaned it but I am not sure the best way to maintain it or if it needs a roof coating like you have listed on your Amazon page.

When bought a 1981 class C, the only manual that was included was the generator manual. The generator hours meter (which works) displays 176 hours.

Great information, thank you! I have an off topic question about using the geneator to operate the A/C while driving rather than the vehicle A/C. We purchased a used Allegro 34' and were told by the dealer that it was more cost effective to use the coach A/C offthe generator than the vehicle A/C because it put less wear on the engine and actually saved fuel and cooled the coach better. Wanted your thoughts. I forgot to mention we are in Arizona where temps can reach 118 in the summer.

Great video again. I just fixed are Chevy Colorado 2008 the serpentine belt tensioner was nosiey so I watch some KZbin videos and changed part and serpentine belt. Quite again. Oh are generator is a marquis 7000 onan with 1800 hrs. Anyone flat tow a Chevy colrodo 2008 going to check in braking system. Had a life check. Found out I have superficial bladder cancer. I have an onan emerald plus 6500 LP gen in a 1992 RV. It Starts but shuts off when start button is released. Slip rings cleaned by gen repair guy. but not generating voltage so it shuts down when start button is released. Another video mentioned unplugging the oil pressure switch wire and grounding out the wire to determine if the oil pressure switch us bad. If you just unplug the wite like you did, wouldn't that look like a bad pressure switch or low pressure and cause the gen to not run? shutdown?. I'm planning to test mine this weekend and also have a voltage regulator ordered in case it is bad. Love the details in your part 1 and 2. Watching part 3 next.

If the gen shuts down while the switch is plugged in but it runs with it unplugged that means the switch is bad.

We had that the problem you talked about. When we were moving into the coach, we turned on the generator to use the lights , but still kept running down the house batteries. I checked the generator and sure enough the breakers were off.

For example, should you always disconnect from shore power before cranking the gen unless the output breaker is OFF. or does it not matter. Just trying to understand is there something I might have done that could have caused my voltage regulator to fail. Or perhaps dirty slip rings cause it to fail. Not sure it is bad bc I still need to check is the oil pressure switch or voltage regulator causing the onan 6500 emerald plus gen NHEFA26100H to shutdown when start switch is released. Gen repair guy said there is no way to test the voltage regulator unless he had a second working gen to test it in. Do you agree?

Martin I have a question for you I’ve done a complete service on my generator oh and 500 oil filter oil fuel filter spark plugs air filter took off my carburetor and completely cleaned it and it looked good but when she runs It idles high and then idles low idles high and idles low I just ordered a brand new fuel pump to try that any other ideas

Hi Brian, It will run rough for about 5 minutes when you first start it up. It needs time to smooth out. But when I serviced my generator the first time, I not only did a 500hr. service to it but I also installed a new fuel pump and a fuel filter. I'd do both if I were you. Make sure you also have at least 1/4 tank of gas in your fuel tank. An then afterwards, exercise it once a month with at least a 1/2 load on it for 30 minutes to an hour. I usually exercise mine while we're traveling from one location to another.

Hello Martin. I have recently been introduced to RV Street and have watch a number of videos. Outstanding videos. Firm believer in backup parts as we live on a CO ranch and parts were not very close. I have a 5.5 HGJAB - 1038L, Specs L. Cummins Onan RV QG 5500. The particular fuel pump on your list is not in stock. I believe I found a match from another supplier. Before I order would like some clarification. 1) Would this fuel pump work on our unit? Here is the fuel pump description you identified. "E11015 Electric Fuel Pump for Cummins A029F887 A047N929 Onan Marquis Gold 5500 generator Fuel Pump Replaces 149-2620". What is the AO number and where can I locate. I have the manual and the generator tag and can not find the AO number. Just want to order correct parts. Apologize for length. Again great videos. When I tell my wife she asks why on extra parts and I explained Martin said to get spares. Seriously she is in a agreement.

"Where can I locate?" If it's currently not available in my Amazon Store I'd just search the web. But these type of parts are usually back in stock soon. Just book mark my store and then check back say once a week. As far as the one you found and will it work i'm not sure. My OEM Part# was Fuel Pump 149-2620 but I've already replaced mine with the one in my store. I'd either call or email Onan for exact number you need to be sure if your in doubt.

I don't think I understand your question. OK, I came back after thinking about your question some more.. EDIT: Crawl under the RV and take a look at the back of the generator-in the corner-and just make sure it's not leaking a little gas around the fuel filter or the fuel pump. Other than that, take the front cover off the genny and inspect the fuel line that feeds the carb and make sure there's no leaks there either.

When your staionary at a campsite - can you open the RV bay door to help cool the system? - I am not speaking about the actual onan generator cover.

There's no reason to open the bay door where the generator is. An air cooled generator will stay cool @ proper running temp just fine with the bay door closed. No advantage by opening the bay door as long has it has been serviced properly and on schedule. 👍

Any experienced mechanic knows the reason for specialized spark plugs sockets. It's not to hold the part in place so you don't drop it, it's to prevent misalignment resulting in insulator breakage. Swivel sockets on spark plugs is risky business

As an experienced mechanic I NEVER use any kind of socket to replace spark plugs for the misalignment issue you brought up. I ALWAYS put new spark plugs in by hand. Sometimes using a swivel to remove spark plugs is unavoidable like in this case where the access area is real tight. Over 50yrs. I've never had an issue using a swivel on a socket if necessary. You just have to be careful. thx for your comment so I could clarify this for others 👍

Do you usually auto level or manual level? I always manual level but I have a Power Gear leveling system. For your system not coming back up..... Look for the breaker for the jack pump motor. It is a small black box, unlabeled of course, usually near the batteries. Reset it and then you should be able to retract the jacks. Have you read your leveling manual? Sounds like your coaches LCI leveling system also may not have been calibrated. Here is the process. LEVEL ZERO POINT CALIBRATION Before auto-leveling features are available, the Level Zero point must be set. This is the point to which the system will return when an auto leveling cycle is initiated. To set the zero point (controller module must be fully secured in production intent location), first run a manual leveling sequence to get the vehicle to the desired level point. Then activate the Level Zero point configuration mode. This mode is enabled by performing the following sequence: 1. Turn panel off. Then turn panel on. 2. Perform the following: -Press the FRONT switch 5 times. -Press the REAR switch 5 times. 3. At this point all LED outputs will blink, and the buzzer will be off. 4. You are now in IDLE mode ready to set Zero Point. 5. With a carpenter’s level, manually level the coach. This will give the leveling controls the reference point for the Zero Point Configuration. 6. When coach is completely leveled manually press the RETRACT ALL switch 3 times to set the zero point.
