❓ About This Episode: Last year we released a video outlining the RV roof modification that many campers have been performing for years. The modification involves using Eternabond Roof Seal to permanently seal your self-leveling lap sealant in order to prevent on-going roof resealing. Well, it has been a year, and everyone wants to know if this modification works. Thanks for watching, please like and subscribe!

Well researched and informative video. I get that a few people won’t like the way it looks, but I couldn’t give a shit what my roof looks like if it was all sealed up. Besides, I think it looks good. As if lap sealant looks good anyway.

Very informative. I have a question, when installing the material at the cap screw covers, do you wrap over the top edge or stop at the metal trim? I also have a suggestion that I haven’t seen on any of the videos relating to Eternabond. When applying the material, it’s best to “round” the corners. This helps keep the “square” corner from lifting or something snagging the corner. Thanks again for the videos.

Makes you wish Eternabond made entire RV roofs. I’d pay a few hundred extra for a roof that lasts 15-30 years with no leaks. Good video, thanks!

You CAN, Look into PVC rubber roofs. They're last 15-20 years at least. It's more expensive than tpo or regular rubber membrane but it's well worth it in my book.

I have an awning that was showing age from sun damage and hail. I put a 6" strip over the top of the awning with it rolled up. Has been a year and still holding strong. Cheaper than a new awning and the rest of the awning is in good shape. I'm considering doing this even to a new awning.

I suggest every RV keep a small roll of it around for emergency repairs. It is a great product for patching scrapes and punctures in to your roof, or anything that you want to keep water out of. I have used to it to patch many things. In fact I have the remnants of a roll from 2005 and used ~5 in sq to patch a small hole and the tape was still good. It's been more than 2 years since that patch and it is still holding.

Looks like a good solution, we painted the roof sealer on our dicor a couple times. It did well, but needs reapplied every 2-3 years. I did it because our Lance had a minor skylight lead when we brought it home and it hasn't leaked for five years since. Now we are picking up a new Imagine in the next couple of weeks if our dealer gets a timely delivery from Indiana. I definitely see the need for both my thumbs AND a roller as these 61-year-old hands need some backup, LOL. Thanks for the video and follow-up. Cheers, Davey - KU9L

I did this to my trailer when installed a new 60mil roof membrane. Even used it on several areas under the membrane to make sure of no leaks. 3 years later and not even a hint of worry about leaking. I did not use any lap Sealand and did pure eternabond tape on edges and around evetyhing on the roof. Followed Ray from "Love your RV" with several mods that have worked out great. The rope at the back end under eternabond tape has worked out the best. Forces the water to the outside gutters. Great 1st videos as well as your as your follow up.

These RVs are ALL slapped together for fast production and quality suffers tremendously but it's just how it is now adays sad but true. Keep a small roll in the camper drawer for those unexpected issues.. Also they recommend using a Eternabond Caulk specifically designed to seal the edge of the tape.. Great videos. I have been working on rvs for nearly 5 years now and agree with your techniques including using self leveling lap sealant on any leading edges of the tape just as a barrier from anything eventually working it’s way into that leading edge. If I may suggest when removing a penetration of the roof (ie vent) I found an oscillating tool with a knife edge blade inserted careful not to puncture the roofing material works well to remove old sealant in mass as well as a narrow putty knife with the corners rounded. As far as cleaning anything I use an orange oil based cleaner after Oxiclean for heavy organic dirt. The best product for cleaning stuck on glue is rapid remover on a semi-saturated small rag to soften and eventually remove any glue residue. It’s pricey ,but, very effective if you allow it to work for you.

O.K. Gentlemen, I have a question. I've just purchased my first RV. Don't get excited, lol, it's a 22' 1984 GMC Citation Supreme Class C. Yes, it still has the original aluminum roof. And it is immaculate ! However, with the couple of times that I have been up on the roof, not for an in-depth inspection, I have seen areas that look like the sealant is starting to crack and lift & are going to need resealing. I'll do my research further as well as respect both of your opinions if you care to answer. And I do hope you choose to. I'm wondering if I should put a membrane on the entire roof? Not only would it eliminate seams but I also believe it would make it quieter during heavier rains. And if either of you think so, what are your reasons as to why? If that is going to be the first step, then I would reseal it all & then install the Eternabond. If I am following correctly.

Ross I did this 3 years ago and for those that have slides I would suggest doing those as well. The mfg already have a strip running from end to end on the slide box. RV’s are not really an invest but anything you can do to protect what you have invested into is just common sense. And you should still inspect your roof regularly which I do monthly or each time I move because limbs and other garbage seem to fall on it.

First, we had pop up campers for years and sold when the kids were in sports, have recently purchased a used camper trailer and your videos are my number 1 source of information, thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience. This camper has needed some tlc, and I know from you, what to tackle and how, Unfortunately we have pine trees along our parking spot, and I have done some manage to the roof that I have been working on. I am going to use this stuff along the top side edge like you did, and wondered if you have regretted attaching the bond to the replaceable trim cover stuff, that 1 inch replaceable trim that covers the screwed down trim tracking. Since that trim is destroyed by the sun, and needs replacing ever so often, which I did just do on ours. But given it might need replacing again, what are your current thoughts on how you went half way down and stuck the bond to it? Regret it? Worry bout it for the future?
@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS
@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the nice comment Chad. If the bottom half that piece degrades from the sun (the top half wont because its covered), ill just pop it out at the bottom and slice the eternabond at the top where it connects. New eternabond would need to be installed on the sides but you can go over old eternabond with new. they actually mention this in their video. its a little work but ill also put some plastic and rubber seal treatment on it when during my maintenance and after 6 seasons its showing no signs of degradation.

@@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS I’m working on an update. It has cracked in a few areas and I’ve been working on coating over them. I personally believe that the cracks are fine most of the time as you have to remember that under it is multiple layers of the roofing, an epoxy base coat, and your factory TPO. They did offer to send someone out for the warranty work but I am doing it myself. To me it’s about the lifetime warranty for failure. They say your warranty is intact even if you never get on the roof. I still recommend washing it and inspecting it yearly though. Overall I’m still happy with it

Good observation Ron. I figured the eternabond would help protect that piece. Plus I put 303 on it every 4 months. I am getting some leaks now after two years. I believe it is getting past the section of tape on the hinge side of the vent. That is a difficult area to get the best seal because of the uneven areas where the hinges are. Did you have any tricks to work around that area of a vent? I think an extra strip of Eternabond above the hinge area to raise the level of the tape might work. Oregon is a rough place to have a leak!

I have a fiberglass roof that goes down the side to the 'rain' tray/drain. The RV tech tried to seal it with the eternabond but it eventually lifted up. Now the other side has popped up. Going to just fill it up underneath with sealant hoping the works. Would love to seal around everything with the eternabond.

Eternabond is extremely difficult to remove and if applied correctly on an approved surface it is never going to pull up as it did in your experience. I would be mindful of using that rv tech again for this application. I have done exactly what you said over 2 years ago and neither side has lifted. It was definitely not prepped or applied correctly, or both.

Ross. Thanks for this lesson. We are just starting this RV experience soon in our 70’s. Waiting on delivery of our new TT. Since we live in Florida and it will be stored outside, should we think about installing this ASAP as a preventative or could we wait for a year and see how the seams are looking? ( or maybe wait 6 months for a cool day.) LOL Speaking of that, does Eternabond adhere better on warmer days?) Thanks again, Larry

I would at least do the vents and over the fridge unless you got a12 volt fridge and didn't get a vent for it. I would also do the front and back. As for the sides, i would wait if it's brand new. As far as the skylight, remember that skylights can get old or crack and eternabond is hard to remove so that's a personal choice.

it seems to be a little stickier on hot days, but applying pressure is important regardless of the temperature. it doesnt matter when you do it, as long as the sealant is in good shape and clean. Good luck with your new RV and dont hesitate to ask questions.

Advantage of doing it soon after taking delivery is everything is clean and hasn't been degraded by the sun. In FL, I'd consider getting a good cover if I was going to leave it in storage for more than a couple months. I cover ours in the winter in Idaho while we go to FL. No, we don't take our RV that far. Yet. Next winter we're making that trip.
