RW Angel Tribal Deck Tech

My paper RW Angel Tribal deck tech. This deck is not fully optimized yet, it was built out of almost entirely things I had laying around. For example, Swords to plowshares is needed, and upgrades to the mana base.

Yay! It's finally here! Have you considered trying out Tithe or Nahiri the Harbinger in this deck? I've found Tithe to be much more flexible at getting Plains out of your deck than Gift of Estates, and Nahiri is excellent card filter and removal. But other than that, the deck looks super fun to play.

Yeah Tithe is more optimal choice over Gift of Estates, but I built this deck out of mostly stuff I had laying around. Tithe is $10 *shudders* so I didn't have any of those. Ive messed around with Nahiri a bit, I think its in the reanimator version but I have to double check. She used to be in this deck, but I had enough to ultimate her one time, and I realized that the best thing I could do was Gisela at least in that particular game so I decided to cut it, since it also draws a lot of attention. She is great for utility of filtering and killing enchantments though. Good card choices. I think you'll really like the reanimator version. I'm going to film that one in MTGO and just focus on a few key interactions, so it wont take me all week to edit down :)

I am surprised you didn't include Gisela, the broken blade. Very strong beater of blocker early game due to first strike and lifelink, and if she melds with Bruna, you have a very strong lockpiece.

Ive been meaning to actually. When I built the deck she was few more dollars than I wanted to spend, but I haven't spent a ton of time refining the deck since. She'll probably take the slot over angel of finality, since its never as good as I want it to be. Once planar bridge is online, you can find either half and meld into Brisela.

The deck is really impressive. I love Boros Angels, Usually I pefer aggresive looking creatures, but angels are so beautiful that I wanted to find something with both and Boros Angels is perfect. Gisela and Aurelia are my babes

Thanks! This is one of the decks that I'm most proud of over the last 2 years or so of the channel. I posted the updated decklist above in the description. Yeah Aurelia and Gisela are my favorites too, and nothing makes me happier than having both on the battlefield. I once had the better part of the dream team assemebled. Aurelia, Gisela, Reya, Both Akromas and Avacyn. Games don't usually go too long once you have that though.

Love the deck man, helps me model my own edh deck. I play avacyn angel of board wipes. Im trying to play an artificer sub theme with the most powerful artifacts in edh paired with cards like the new Karn, Ethersworn Canoisist, Platty angel, stoneforge, batterskull, ..... im only about halfway done but I love it so far.

Interesting. I was considering a similar type of build when i did the Zetalpa video but I wasn't going to be able to play test it enough to really make it work right before filming. Id be interested to see what you come up with.

Blade of Selves on most things is pretty amazing! Heres a dirty trick I stumbled onto at some point. Burnished Hart with Emeria Shepherd, or Burnished hart with Angelic Renewal... enjoy :)

Cool deck bro. I am missing archangel of thune and the 2/4 angel that makes oponent not attack when they receive damage from it. Also I'm exited for a Lyra Dawnbringer thats coming out in Dominaria. It costs 3and 2 white for a 5/5 that has flying, first strike, flying and it gives your other angels +1/+1 and lifelink

Yeah Thune was just reprinted so it should come down in price, I traded for a full price one like 6 months ago for my other deck. Sad face. Blinding Angel is the one I think your thinking of, that's a card that I have considered at points, I probably need to give it another look. Yeah the new angels look cool, we'll definintely be checking those out once they get released.

So this is totally sweet. Ive been playing with the idea of running a "combat tribal" style angel edh deck with Aurelia at the helm. So far Ive got just about all the instants and sorceries that give extra combat steps, the Odric that has the Master Warcraft ability, Master Warcraft and a few choice equipments. Youve given me some great ideas for the needed ramp, and getting things into play. Id forgotten about Beleb's Portal, thats a great card. What are your thoughts on running Cryptic Gateway?

Glad you're enjoying the content! I actually have an attack step tribal version of Aurelia that I haven't published to the channel. It can end games very quickly since you're getting 3-4 combats a turn, assuming you don't hit one of the aggravated assault combos. I haven't played Master Warcraft all that much though I feel like I should. Disrupt Decorum is something that I also want to test out more, it makes it so people can't hold up blockers and really messes with their defense. I tried cryptic gateway in this deck for a few games and I wasn't getting much value out of it. It doesn't help if you have less than 2 angels, and I found that I didn't really want to tap them out since they are my primary means of defense. Its an interesting card, and Im sure it belongs in a deck somewhere I just don't think this is the right one for it.

Groovy! Thanks for the reply. Master Warcraft is a really good finisher. I also wanted to suggest Blinding Angel, shes smaller, and one of the cheaper angels to cast, but really messes things up for your opponents with a Whispersilk Cloak, or similar. Oh, and I too run the pubstomping Iona, but only for control matchups, lol. Its really kind of a "feels bad" card for me. Keep up the groovy vids!

Sweet deck PJ, I especially enjoyed that Platinum Angel Star Wars alter. Angel of Finality is a good card with an effect that is relevant in Commander, it just needed to have flash. As for the lands I would suggest Wind-Scarred Crag over Stone Quarry, might as well gain a life and Rugged Prairie. Another great haste land is Flamekin Village scryfall.com/card/c14/60 Looking forward to the next deck tech.

Yeah the mana base on this one really needs some work. I know its about to be reprinted and should come down quite a bit, but as of last week rugged prairie was $22...shudders. I really want to get a plateau and a few khans fetches that will smooth things out. Oh good call on flame kin village forgot all about that one. I didn't even realize it was a star wars alter I just thought it looked cool :)

Yeah I was actually thinking about Knight of the White Orchid all week while I was editing this together. Should definintely add one, it ramps and a land, and gives another thing to equip sword of the animst and mask of memory to nice and early. Herald's Horn is a good card, but strangely more expensive than it feels like it should be. This deck was built on mostly stuff I had laying around, so its not completely optimized. The RW reanimator list will have more optimal card choices, and I'm pretty sure Heralds is in that one. Great card choices though!

Those are some seriously sweet alters! Especially the Platinum Angel on Hoth instead of Mirrodin :-P Do you think it would be stupid to run a card like Expropriate in The Ur-Dragon?

It doesn't seem to have any particular syngery with the Ur-Dragon, but its such a powerful card on its own that I don't know that it needs to. Think of it like having a separate win condition in case things go wrong with the main plan of slamming dragons. However, if you're in a good position already I could see it just ending the game. If you have UR Dragon and another dragon or 2 in play, opponents will be basically forced into the money vote since they know they'll die by voting time....your basically forcing them into a really awful decision of lose the game, or probably lose the game. After walking through it, yeah sounds pretty strong :)

Also, yeah the alters are sweet :) Is that hoth? I just thought it looked call and wasn't super expensive. Some of them I bought before I had the deck just cause I got excited. Then needed to find a home for them, which is sort of where this deck started from...needed a home for the alters.

I'm always torn between if I want a card altered or foil. The only reason I thought it was Hoth is because that's a T-47 right, but I guess the rebellion used them on other planets as well lol. Thanks for the analysis on Expropriate. It seems like one of the strongest bombs around, and the Ur-Dragon deck already can support a slightly higher curve, so I'm thinking why not give it a shot. Yeah me too! I was really hoping we would get a 5 color angel in commander 2017, but it wasn't meant to be. Maelstrom Archangel is a really sweet card, and I wish I had an angel deck to run it in. Empyrial Archangel is also pretty cool, wouldn't mind having a home for Bruna and Sigarda as well.

Yeah it could easily slot into the staff of nin slot. Id like to get something that was cheaper on the curve since 6cmc competes with our commander and a handful of creatures in a deck. The reanimator version of the deck uses all of the wheel effects which is nice, since they are cheaper.

Anya and Basandra are needed also Avacyn the Purifier also I would lose Iona for Malignus combos with Gisela and Aurelia like none other

Malignus is fine, but not needed for this deck. It really needs evasion to be effective (trample, flying) otherwise it gets chump blocked by 1/1s all day. Anya does almost literal nothing, and Basandra can be useful once in a while, but there is just better things for that slot. Avacyn has been in an out of the deck i need to play test it more.

Lol tons! Ive gone through so many iterations on her but where Im at right now, I would say that I have 3 main archetypes: equipments, 45 creature, and angel tribal, and then each of those have a few variants within that archetype. Ive thought about making a chart on it, cause I think it'd be funny. Some commanders just speak your name. It is cool when a commander allows you different ways to build around it so you don't have to do the same thing overtime. I could see going a few different routes on Karador.

Iroas is great in an Aurelia deck, just that this one is Angel focused. But i include him in other Aurelia builds. Aurelia has enough devotion to turn on Iroas which is really nice.

Great card. The deck generates mana pretty well because of sword of the animist so it could definintely make use of it. I currently have Savage Beating, which could be swapped out for it. I might have an extra one laying around so Ill have to slot that in and see how it plays....Savage Beating does get more funny points in my opinion though :)

A little bit of support in your tribal deck is fine. Probably wouldn't go over like 5 though. Adding 1 stone forge mystic doesn't make it not an angel deck.

The choice of legendary lands and artifact lands may seem weird, but they help to maximize card advantage with Board the Weatherlight, if you cast it on turn 2 for example, it has a 38.89% chance of hitting a card, and that goes up the more turns pass in the game. The legendary creature count also helps make sure Blackblade Reforged can always go on something :)

Probably a good choice! Hopefully it comes down from $7 that's just more than I want to pay for that particular card. Actaully sunbirds invocation might be cool in that slot, and I am pretty sure I have an extra one of those. Yeah I should replace the Path with Swords. This deck was built almost entirely of stuff I had laying around, so its not completely optimized. When I do the RW reanimator version you'll see optimal card choices.

I want to challenge your statement that Sword of the Animist is, and I quote you here, "the most important card to make the deck work." It's got to be equipped to a creature, that then has to attack. But, but... how are you going to get those super-expensive creatures out to begin with AND get the sword in play attached and attacking? It's a catch-22 is it not? I think Land Tax could be the most important card in the deck! Fetch it with Enlightened or Idyllic tutors ASAP!

So like, theres no way I can respond to your question without sounding like a dick, which is unfortunate because I try to respond to everything in a sincere manner, so it will bi-product of the way your question is worded... I guess my main question is, have you played the deck? Have you played any significant amount of Boros or Aurelia? Land tax is good, but its not ramp. On the other hand Sword of the animist is seriously broken in an Aurelia deck. You get 2 lands a turn, plus a 3rd if you make your land drop. You can easily out ramp the green player in 2 turns of combat. This has been my main deck for 5 years, so im pretty sure I know what the most important pieces are. There are plenty of creatures at 2-4 CMC that allow it to get going at a reasonable time. So yes, Land Tax is NOT the most important piece to make this deck work, in fact i cut it to move it to another deck with super low land count because this deck functions fine without it, but sword of the animist IS the most important piece to making the deck work.

I totally concede to your expertise in Commander, Boros and specifically: Aurelia. @@SOLtoo You are welcome. So yes, sorry if that came off harsh. Anyway yeah multi producing ramp is the most important aspect of this deck, and sword of the animist is a card that allows you do that easily. That also means that Thran Dynamo, Hedron Archive and Worn Powerstone, and burnished hart are solid, tho lately im not as impressed with WP. Im looking at adding Gilded Lotus back into the deck as again, multi ramp super important but also thinking about dowing dagger as it fills a similar role. Another thing I've found is that cost reduction is really good, ive started using Oketra's monument and on top of Herarld of War and Urza's incubator that can do some great stuff also. So yeah making your lands is very important, but in todays day and age still not good enough by itself, you need to ramp and you need to get ahead mana wise especially in such a high curve deck like that. For your sake I might recommend cutting an 8 drop (red akroma), and cutting a 7 drop an replacing with 4-6 CMC angels, just to reduce the clunk a bit....im very comfortable with the high curve, but if your newer to the deck it will likely feel better to you that way. I do recommend you check out the decklink in the description. Ive updated the deck sometime within the past few months and its had numerous changes since 2018 and that should get you going.

Sweet! I played Aurelia twice. I had winning combos in hand twice, but there was some awkward disruption in play, portcullis, and confusion in the ranks. Probably needs a wear/tear. I don't think the eldrazi and blight steel fit into this deck. I would focus on smaller and more combo piecies, combat celebrant, and eldrazi displacer.
