@@buntyjoy1800 Gentlepersons I have to disagree with both of you. And @jeffsimon9594 - Rwanda was - indeed - the wrong solution, and whilst I agree that the Conservatives were wrong - I can't completely accept the fair point. There was another option. Professor Tim has espoused often that the processing of the asylum application backlog is part of the way forward - and at the same measure to host a full international conference on the intention to update or amend the 1951 Refugee Act. And I have agreed with this! It was the sensible thing to do so and the reasonable thing to do as well! I would say however! That the wear down in the Home Office started just after Cameron stood down as PM and Theresa May became PM ! After having been in the Home Office for 8 years - surely morale there was at an all time low and after she assumed the office of PM ! It struggled with the existing backlog under other Home Secretaries - the two final straws were Patel and Braverman. Sajiv Javid found the home office in such a mess between these two, that there was very little he could do to redress the balance and my fellow Bristolian would have found it as unfortunate and daunting. Being the sensible person he was - it would be almost impossible to do something about it, even if he wanted to. - and Johnson and - later - Truss had made it all the worse! The Current Government and Home Secretary will have a lot of work to do, to get it back into proper functioning condition. Which is why, elsewhere! I said there's two priorities for Starmer's government. One: The NHS and Two: The Home Office. The third priority remains dealing with the problems of Cost of Living! The two priorities I have listed remains the two main ones. Though the third unlisted one, remains a point of vitality! The damage done to the Home Office is a critical concern equal to that of the NHS! Both of these remain the highest concern. I hope that helps to explain some of it. To you both. It's something that I have observed and take note of having to be dealt with.

Why is there no break down for these contracts ? Who is being paid what ? there needs to be transparency in these deals . This is a huge some of money for nothing . Yeah - the Tories made the dumb deal with Rwanda in the first place. It's not really up to Rwanda to refund the money seeing as how they entered the agreement. I don't really know enough about the Rwandan government to criticise it fairly, but taking the money offered by a bunch of suckers in the last government who wanted an expensive gimmick to show people they were "doing something" is on the previous government, you can't blame the Rwandan government for taking advantage.

@sarahwinfield398921 күн бұрын
You know as well as I that no effort will be made to retrieve tha money we have paid Rwanda. The UK is like a bank for the rest of the world where it can simply print more and more money to put in the pockets of the selected few. Examples include the post office, the water companies and other utility companies, local councils, HS2, the French government, the BBC, privatised rail companies, etc.etc.
@stephenfarthing381921 күн бұрын
The simple solution is to seek liability from the main problem themselves. And the point is that those who put up the idea should be taken to court and made to pay damages - in relation to this unworkable notion! That should apply to those in office in government who supported it!

On April 9th 2024 the Torygraph reported that the UK government has sold 160 of the houses it had built in Rwanda to the local population. I'm not sure what remains, and the number of refugees that can now be housed. However, I suspect any sane government wanting to distance itself from this inhumane policy would avoid any solution involving Rwanda because it has negative connotations.

As Austerity is estimated to have contributed to over 120,000 premature deaths in a country far wealthier than Greece, any such suggestion is not only distasteful, but frankly deeply cynical and shortsighted. You see, Briton is a debtor to the European Union too. Britain is still repaying the sums due under the TCA, which it hasn't yet fully implented according to the agreement and WTO rules.
