I would like to point out that the younger brother( Darkness) is not evil. He agrees with his older brother that there is a balance. He was tricked by salem because he felt someone actually admired his works. Darkness isn't evil it's just the opposite of light. That's why he stood with his older brother and apologized to him when he realized he had made a mistake.

Though it is worth noting that when the Gods created humanity and gave them the four great gifts that are symbolised by the Relics (Knowledge, Creation, Destruction, and Choice), they put them on Remnant for them each to take everything they had learned and decide which path to follow: *_"The path of light, or the path of darkness"_* This would imply that they meant the path of good or the path of evil.

They are specifically gods of creation and destruction, light and dark. None of that is good or evil. The choices thing still stands but its not a choice of good or evil. The children died in Salem and Ozma’s fight, collateral damage. I think it was confirmed on the blu ray commentary that during the many periods of reincarnation, Ozpin met the four sisters and they reminded him of his children and so he bestowed a large chunk of his magic onto them, and they became the first four maidens. As others have said, the children shown in this episode are not maidens, but they were Ozpin’s inspiration for the maidens many years later, when he met the four sisters who pulled him out of his depression (as shown in the Four Maidens World of Remnant)

Oz's kids aren't the Maidens, the Wizard was one of Oz's past lives, probably one that had given up, and the 4 Maidens reminded him of his daughters, and they were probably the ones who roused him out of his apathy.

Think back to the opening monologue of the first chapter of RWBY Volume 1 the narrator (Salem) says “Mankind, born from dust” Mankind evolved from the ashes of the original humanity. The semblances Huntsman and Huntresses’ wield today are a “semblance” of the magical abilities of the original humanity. And the dust crystals, used for fuel and weapons are formed from the ashes of the humanity that got wiped out. Basically the 1st generation of humanity are the 2nd humanity’s fossil fuels

I like the idea that dust is the crystallized remains of the previous humanity but I just can't see that accounting for the sheer quantity of dust that exists. I think it might actually work better for dust to originate from the moon fragments that fell all across the planet, crystallized and imbued with power from contact with the god of darkness.

Yeah RT kinda shot themselves in the foot by showing those kids immediately after it's established that Oz is a massive liar. So many people assume that he just lied about their origin story in V5 and that the kids are actually the first maidens. So much confusion and disagreement among viewers because of it If they put in a little scene with the old wizard giving away the power during that montage of the past lives it might've cleared up a lot of the confusion

Now this is a story I’m going to tell About a young girl that fell under a spell Her name was Salem and I will not skim How she was cursed to become the Queen of all Grimm In a Kingdom, set very far away In a tower was where she spend all of her days Imprisoned all her life by a dad with no chill Nothing to do but practice her magic skill Until a man named Ozma busted her out They made a pretty good team there was no doubt They then set on out for adventures ahead But Ozma got sick and poof that’s the end Salem begged for him back to end her strife But the Light God said that’s the circle of life She went to his brother and got her man back But the Gods rescinded and she launched an attack They made her immortal because they’re total wads So she chose to lead an army against the gods They left after removing all the humans for treason Oh yeah I forgot they were Dragons for some reason After some years people came back with no magic Faunus were there too but their lives were more tragic Salem was secluded to hide her disgrace Until Ozma returned but with a new face With her lover back in hand Salem gained a new ambition To Lead the world, but that was not in Ozma’s mission Regardless of that their power made people ogle Then they had some kids, counting four in total Things were seemingly great for our favorite witch Then their kids starting showing a magic twitch She found her family try to leave without a word So she blew them all up, now that’s absurd Salem was left alone again to stew in her hatred And Ozma kept coming back with his worldview jaded So that’s the story we did not skim How a lonely girl became the queen of all Grimm

the God of Darkness is not "Evil" he is the God of of Destruction and Chaos, the God of Light is not the God of "Good" he is the God of Creation and Order. The God of Light gave people the Gifts of Creation and Knowledge, the God of Darkness gave the Gifts of Destruction & Choice.

Yes, but he also said that he was "cursed by the gods" to reincarnate into someone else. Obviously, we know that's not true. He "volunteered" for that quest given to him by the God of Light. Nothing Oz says can be taken as factual confirmation of anything. He's lied about almost everything regarding history. The maiden's "fairy tale" could just as likely be a way to tell half of the truth of where they actually came from. Without someone besides Oz confirming it, we can't know for sure if they are or not.

You guys missed it or didn't realize, but the daughters stuffed animal on the ground during ozma and Salem's fight symbolized that they got caught in the crossfire and died. The 4 maidens that ozpin eventually met and gave them power were different people that reminded him of them.

Jinn isn't literal like a genie, she gave RWBY a *ton* of extra context she didn't have to, here, just because. Her emphasis wasn't on Oz when she said, "You can't", It was on the word "can't", because as we saw in this episode pretty well, Salem is completely indestructible. The creators said Jinn enjoys answering questions, and that she's like a storyteller. If possible, she likes answering the question in a way that's interesting and gives full context. Besides, if she was so literal, that would *greatly* lower her usefulness, given you only get 3 questions a century. She was literally made to help humanity, and she's clearly capable of context, so her being literal with Ozpin alone here would be weird.

I believe both Kerry and Miles on one of the livestreams said that Faunus origins part of the story was cut from this Chapter but it will be used at some point. It could be used in the RWBY anthology, the Shallow Sea adaptation episode but it's just a story that isn't necessarily canon.

I always thought the proliferation of dust around the world was due to the broken moon debris that fell back to Remnant in the form meteorites and dust. Spreading around the planet as it rotated. The dust and debris from the moon had magical properties because the dark brother blasted through. Leaving magic properties on it. He did say that it was his gift to humanity before taking it back.

Fun Facts Fact 1: Miles Luna considers this to be one of the most complicated episodes the RWBY crew has ever made, on every level. Not counting credits, this is the longest episode of RWBY to date. Fact 2: Jinn refers to the Grimm as "The Brother's Grimm", most likely referencing The Brothers Grimm, two brothers responsible for the famous classic collection of German fairy tales, which includes Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White and Hansel and Gretel. Fact 3: Ozma and Salem's daughters wear dresses reminiscent of the four Maidens, blue (Winter, who also has ice crystal-like details), pink (Summer, whose yellow skirt also has a big Sun), green (Spring, whose bow and dress trimming also has a leaf-like pattern) and orange (Fall, with the upper parts in brown, similar to Amber's clothes). The eldest daughter in blue also has a chain headdress and belt like the ones worn by Jinn. Ozpin is a good guy, but he has 2 problems: 1st, he has a guilt complex, he blame himself for things that he's not guilty for, so he blames himself for everything Salem. 2nd, he has developed compulsive secret keeping even when he doesn't have to, like the bird thing or the lamp with Grimm

But you have to remember that in the previous episode, he said that Lionheart wasn't the first person to turn against him despite his loyalty. It's hard to trust someone with secrets to only have those secrets be used against them.

He's probably lived long enough to learn from experience that even innocuous and seemingly irrelevant information can be dangerous when collected and collated by an adversary. Anyone who ever gets a security clearance will have taken information security training and that's one of the things you learn. Even if some information is all individually unclassified and seems harmless it might become damaging when combined.

About the Maidens and the relics, each relic is locked in a vault, and each vault can only be opened by a particular Maiden. So that's why the Maidens are important, you can't reach the relics without them. Cinder is important because she is the only one that can get the Beacon

Fun fact: you can see that even after falling into the pits, Salem doesn't develop the black veins all over her body, making her look more like a chinese doll rather than a Grimm witch and it's something that developed over time. That was a choice made behind the scenes as the writers thought it would be weird that Ozpin would find Salem with the veins attractive

Normies you all should go back and rewatch the World of Remnant episode about the Seasonal Maidens. You will have a better appreciation for it now knowing that episode is Ozpin recounting a part of his own life story, of how he was saved from centuries of depression and seclusion by the kindness of four young women who reminded him of his daughters and helped him heal. Also, if you remember that the maiden magic power is bound to a person's soul, and that the reincarnation blessing/curse placed on Ozma's soul and was carried with the magic he gave them, then you'll understand more the significance of what he must have done to give them that power. He must have literally ripped his own soul apart, magic and partial reincarnation included, and given the pieces to them.

It's my own head cannon that the castle in the forest of forever fall was the one from this epsiode. I'm glad they payed attention to this episode. Oz built the vaults, which he linked to the maidens. He put the relics inside the vaults

And this is the episode that made Ozpin and Salem my favorite characters and also made me start hoping that somehow, Ozpin and Salem's relationship is how they defeat her. After all, it's what started all this, it's only fitting that it helps end it. Since it pretty much confirmed that the original maidens were their children, perhaps part of Ozpin's curse was also inherited, and that's why the maidens' magic goes from host to host? Or maybe he did give four young women powers after they helped get him out of his depression, perhaps reminding him of his four daughters, and they're how he came up with the idea to give the maidens his magic in thanks. One of my biggest questions about the reincarnation thing is, does Ozpin keep his original semblance(if he had one), or does he use the semblance of his current carnation? Does he keep the semblances of his old lives? After all, the souls start separate before merging into one, so how does that work? The gods did also tell Salem how to remove her immortality, by learning the value of both life and death, she would be able to rest. But she instead kept trying to spite them, leading an army to try to kill them. Yeah, they definitely could have done something else, but Salem was also doing everything wrong. But all this adds complexities to both Ozpin and Salem that I love. (I also kinda ship them, but not as they *are* together more like I wish they were *still* together having lived together and changed for the better) but Ozpin doesn't control who his soul goes to, I'm sure many times he got reincarnated into the body of someone who already had a family, which kinda sucks cause it means he's likely lost many families, and I'm sure there's been at least one time his soul entered a woman's body, which must have been weird. The God of Light was trying to follow rules he and the God of Darkness created together, one of which is not to disrupt the balance of life and death. The god of darkness didn't really care for the rules, and was just going to do whatever he looked (as he said) but after hearing Salem lied to him because GoL wouldn't do it he realized Salem was manipulating him to bring Ozma back, she didn't actually believe only he could do it, like she had told him. They punished her for trying to manipulate them, and when the GoD destroyed humanity, GoL wanted to give humanity a second chance he knew eventually they'd evolve back into existence, so he gave Ozma the chance to help them. I don't think the reincarnation was meant to be punishment for Ozma, but it turned into one. Unlike Salem, Ozma didn't do anything wrong and i believe the GoL wanted to ensure Ozma didn't have to go through what Salem did, what he didn't count on was Ozma and Salem doing everything they did. Just my thoughts on this episode.

Unless of course, someone accidentally stumbled across the Fountain of Life's remains, something that potentially has already happened in Volumes 5/6... The theory I’ve had since this episode first dropped is that Cinder could potentially be immortal too and no one, including herself, knows it yet. After all, she did fall into a mysterious pool of water below the Vault of the Spring Maiden at the end of Volume 5, which was soon after Cinder had noticed the extra effort put into this Vault over Beacon's and wondered aloud what this extra effort was for. My guess is that Ozpin built this Vault directly over the Fountain of Life in order to safeguard it from misuse by others, and that Cinder coincidentally stumbled upon it when she fell into the abyss. This may or may not come to pass, but I think it's possible that the pool of water that Cinder fell into last episode might have been the remains of the God of Light's Fountain of Life, the very same one that granted Salem her immortality all those millennia ago. We see Cinder sinking and choking in this pool in V6, Chapter 2, and now here in the very next episode we're introduced to the Fountain of Life and witness Salem do pretty much the *_exact_* same thing as Cinder when the God of Light cast her into the Fountain. So for all we know, Cinder might already be immortal herself. It would certainly be a massive help in her quest to surpass and overthrow Salem. *_”Hmm, it’s certainly grander than Beacon’s. The Maidens are not connected to the reilcs, they are connected to the doors that t he relics are locked behind. The maidens are the keys to opening each specific door. One maiden to one door. It doesn't matter which relic you put behind a door or how many relics. Only one maiden can open that specific door. So when Ozma found and locked each relic behind its own door he made each maiden the jey to one door.

They finally paid off all your questions about the moon. But if you'll notice, they haven't paid off at least 1 question. I said my "theory". So while it feels like you've stepped into the final act, there's still a ways to go on this journey yet. And I have no doubt that they'll pay this off with a bang. Man, ya'll might be caught up just in time for Volume 9. From what I know, it's been slated to come out in 2022. There are two ways for Salem to die: either she learns to accept the balance between life and death (which given her attitude even before her immortality is highly unlikely), OR the Brother Gods are summoned back… and in the latter case, if humanity isn’t united, they’ll all be destroyed along with her. Which is where the difficulty for Oz comes in, because he’s in a never-ending battle with Salem who will fight to undo any unifying he tries to perform here…

How this episode is presented is that these flashbacks are truths that Ozpin knew and was hiding from them, but from what we see his first reincarnation happens long after humanity returns to remnant so he wouldn't actually know the nitty gritty details of how it happened and thus we wouldn't see it either. Everyone has their theories about how they come back but unless Salem for some reason chooses to divulge that information i don't think we'll ever get a concrete answer, and i personally don't think its necessary to explain every single aspect of the lore unless its absolutely crucial for the progression of the plot. The only way i could ever see it coming into play is if it's intertwined with the Silver Eyed Warrior origin stories

Without the gods, it's implied that humans rose from nothing the way they did on Earth, eventual evolution, and with normal mammals etc also being on earth from before man came back, other animals also evolved, becoming Faunus. That means Salem likely walked alone for millions of years. No wonder she's looking to bring the relics together to end it.

We learned in chapter 1 of volumev1 that humanity was born from dust. Salem was the narrator. She also told us that humanity still doesn't know everything about dust. I guess that dust is like fossilized magic leftover from when The God of Darkness wiped everyone out. Btw...this whole problem is all The God of Lights fault...He created an unnecessary monster out of a grief stricken woman for no reason. I believe that their daughters all died with Salems attack on Oz. They were the inspiration for him giving the four sisters powers centuries later . I think the World of Remnant videos are all Canon to the show. It doesn't matter if the question is worded differently. She is immortal. She can not die. The God of Light said Salem can't die until she learns the importance of life and death.

Ozma's and Salem's Daughters are not The Maidens as the show does not state that, also The Story of the Seasons must happain afterwards and it did happen as Ozpin reveals that the old wizard in the story was in fact, himself in one of his previous incarnations and that he gave them their powers. Meaning the story is real and the Daughters can't be The Maidens. Becuse they are too young, they exist before he became The Wizard as none of incarnation that we see are look like him, they die in the fight, were born with thier power instead of obtain and it doesn't make sense that they can open the Vault if their power didn't come from Oz

I disagree. The God of Light stated that it was his brother, the God of Darkness, who destroyed humanity, and he was 100% correct. The God of Light didn't support it - in fact he turned away at the time - it's just that there was nothing he could do to prevent it without getting into a tug of war situation with his brother just like they did with Ozma, except this time with the entire human race. By bringing Ozma back, he is offering the chance for humanity to unify and redeem themselves, to make up for his brother's actions against the first humanity.

Here’s the thing about his questions to Jinn. He said how could HE destroy her. Not how could she be destroyed. Jinn answers things literally. It IS impossible for Ozpin to destroy Salem, but that doesn’t mean it’s not possible
