@@shadows_star Well......no.....Monty died.......He had a VERY distinct style and understanding of fight choreography, they didn't trade the quality for the animation, they just, sorta lost the key creator for their fight scenes....he was basically the lynch pin to all of Rooster Teeth's fight animations.

Torchwick’s speech makes so much sense now. Saying he can’t afford to lose, saying “you can’t beat them, I can’t beat them.” I’m wondering if he actually knew about Salem, that she can’t be killed, and just simply worked for Cinder because he felt he didn’t have any choice but to do so. Not that it makes him any good or morally grey, he’s still a villain, but it really does make one think 🤔

Or one step down. Remember how Cinder threatened Ravens group? The references to being "a gambling man" and the quote you said, it's possible that he and Neo were in a tight spot in life, or financially, and Cinder/Salem got them out of it. They found out about how strong or influential Cinder/Salem is, and so thats why he says that. He mentioned that he's been "hired" to destroy Vale, but perhaps he's actually paying off a debt.

If you mean her backstory, I believe Monty had planned the story to fill about 8-9 volumes before his unfortunate passing, so it's very possible her backstory is included in that, since it is a major plot point ^_^

Every attack just seems so strong and full of energy, they move so fast and it's a delight to watch - I'm not sure what's missing in the newer volumes. It's not just choreography. I wasn't particularly a fan of the change in animation from v3-4 but attacks seems so sluggish and they get tired immediately. It shouldn't feel that way when their lives are at stake and it's such a shame

Like OBRN may just be a side team, but we can tell they've actually been teammates for a long time by the way they bailed each other out on multiple occasions. Same with all the other minor characters. Honestly could watch a series with any of the minor teams as the main characters.

The name "Pyrrha" literally means "the flame-haired", or in general, "THE RED-HAIRED" (that's how that mystery woman in season 6 is credited, so it's how I know that really wasn't Pyrrha's mother, or any other relative of hers). You're right in that she was Fridged, so hard that as far as I'm concerned, she's now the new standard for the "Women in Refrigerators" concept. And Penny almost broke THAT new bar!

Even more so when you realize the real function of that fight was not to give Pyrrha narrative agency in her exit, but to show off Cinder's new power-set. It was a weapons test, much like the Red Trailer was for Ruby. All Pyrrha objectively was, was the punching bag. And that's on top of all the narrative ineffectiveness baked in to that moment.

@@2097Pyros It's also just excruciating for the audience (well, mostly Pyrrha fans). Up to that point, Pyrrha was effectively built up as the "invincible girl"; a true unbeatable champion warrior. _However,_ Cinder almost never even puts any effort into attacking her. She just floats menacingly in the air as she casually counters all of Pyrrha's moves; it's a silent way of telling Pyrrha "Pfft, why don't you try harder? _Maybe_ you'll actually hurt me with one of those attacks sometime this century". It's all the more effective considering Pyrrha's death was, to at least _some_ degree, was her own fault. Nobody put a gun to her head and outrighr forced her to challenge Cinder herself, especially since she personally was told how much power the Maidens held. In the end, Pyrrha doesn't even land any kind of crippling wound or scar on Cinder; all she really did was _INDIRECTLY_ let Ruby unleash her Silver Eyes for the first time, but even then it still cost Pyrrha... you know... _her life,_ and she was no longer even there to witness it anyway. It all set up Cinder as a ridiculously strong adversary (at least until later Volumes) just by having her effortlessly crush Pyrrha who was fighting a suicidal duel the entire time.

@@mrreyes5004 And even that loses its narrative impact with a) Pyrrha NOT being an appropriate catalyst for the Silver Eyes (that goes to one of Yang, Penny, Qrow, Weiss or Jaune in order of most effective to least effective), and b) later information being established about the Silver Eyes that negates the narrative need for ANYONE to die for it, let alone Pyrrha, specifically the information that emotions fueling the desire to protect, and NOT those from grief of loss. It makes one wonder: if that were actually the case, then they'd ABSOLUTELY flare up when Penny died, as well as when Ruby sees Yang's injury. With what they claim is the case compared to what they showed, it objectively becomes a clear case of the writers trying to gaslight the audience, pretending that they totally didn't set a new "Women in Refrigerators" standard. And I clearly remembered the season 1 commentaries, then talking about how they elevated JNPR to "Main" characters late into development, from the B-squad they were originally created as. Problem is, when you do that, you give those characters more entitlement to drive the main narrative. What we got, and what we continue to get with JNPR as a whole, is the writers using them as the B-squad they were crated as, and NOT as the Mains they were claimed to be elevated to, and that includes how they removed Pyrrha from the narrative. In short: they were lying the whole time about JNPR being Mains, and only called them that because they knew they were aping off of the Game of Thrones popularity (they freely admitted the Game of Thrones inspiration, I've taken to calling it the "Redhead Wedding"). Pyrrha was claimed to be a Main, used as a Support, and left as a Star Trek Redshirt.

@@2097Pyros Half of the characters that ended up as recurring or secondary main characters after vol 1 were because people (either the writers or the audience) liked them too much; Roman was supposed to be a one-off enemy for V1 but viewers liked him enough that the writers waited until the Fall of Beacon to off him. Plus, to be fair, knowing the source of each member of JNPR's inspirations (Jeanne d'Arc, Thor, Akhilleus, and Mulan), it's almost surprising that Pyrrha has been the _only_ JNPR member killed off so far. It's not surprising that JNPR, or at least Jaune, ended up being turned into a bigger role, since he works as a foil for Ruby as they each have to learn how to face different challenges of their maturity as team leads. Also keep in mind that Ruby's eyes activating only after Pyrrha's death might have been more the result of a building sense of futility from the multiplying tragedies of the day, since by that time she'd had to witness Penny's "death," the arena and school being viciously attacked, it's very possible some students and spectators were maimed or slaughtered by Grimm, White Fang, and virused Atlesian armors during the defense attempts, and on top of that the implication that Ozpin had fallen and watching Pyrrha die in front of her would easily serve as the final straw trope to finally unlock her new power. I don't think it's as clear-cut a cast as you are claiming that the writers are attempting to gaslight viewers, though I am more than willing to concede that it's very likely that the lore of the Silver Eyes was only properly pinned down in Volume 6 or 7.

If the reaction to seeing someone die is going to be that explosive, it HAS to be someone the character is connected to well beyond just an acquaintanceship, and Pyrrha's not beyond that. She's basically a friend of a friend. I listed those specific characters BECAUSE they had that strong connection to Ruby, either built up during the show, or it's a chronologically pre-existing bond that gets emphasized. On top of that, prior trauma does not play an active part in this. It's basic narrative investment and return. Hell, Akira Toriyama got this right when he chose Krillin as the death catalyst for Goku going Super Saiyan. Also, nice to know that your knowledge of JNPR's source material shaped your expectations of them. Funny thing about making that connection is that such a connection treats the new character as nothing more than an extension of the old one, and not a character in their own right. AKA: you fell for their trap. Why do you think they made that knowledge public? Because they KNEW you and countless others would make that connection, and rationalize their eventual deaths as "good writing" no matter how it came (or might come) about). They knew how to manipulate you, and this was just one of those ways they've done it. The gaslighting with the Silver Eyes "lore" was another, and it ended up being more damaging in the long run, as I detailed over 3 months ago.

The volumes nowadays kind of go for big fight scenes at the end of all time, we're probably going to get some fights with some grimm or something before we get a one-on-one fight I just want to see Ruby what ruby can do in a one-on-one fight the fight with Harriet really wasn't shown that much plus if they can show Qrow using his scythe in a one-on-one after I don't know how many years of being teased with it and we get a hell of a showing in skill from him I would love to see what ruby can do what her sign in a one-on-one fight that's not always cutting away to something else I really want to see what she can do and the only time we actually seen her actually use her scythe and away we would imagine was against neo for like a good four seconds

@@peterlopez771 THANK YOU. I appreciate the jump in quality for fights since volume 5 but Ruby herself hasn't had a well choreographed fight since her volume 4 character short. During rwby vs ace ops she swung her scythe twice. TWICE. That's it. And it's not like it's a difficult weapon to work with cuz Qrow gets great choreo all the time. We've had enough of Blake and Yang. We need more Weiss and Ruby.

I hate how the maiden powers are just a regular thing now. Amber seemed like such a devastating foe, giving the like of Emerald, Mercury and Cinder a challenge. Now maiden powers just seem like the run of the mill dust, just on command. Edit: also ironwood was so badass back then too

When Monty Oum passed, it changed. But volume 3 still got fight choreography that was entertaining. From volume 4 and up, they just jump around now and swing whatever weapon they have. I know we’ll never get Monty Oum style again, but I wish they stuck to the choreography level of volume 3.
