God, Jaune was such an MVP throughout this entire volume. Putting aside all of his leadership, positive attitude, and knack for coming up with great plans; his dedication to the mission, his growth as a fighter, and his development as a character improved vastly. People have always cared for non Title characters, and Jaune went through the developments early on that help now just like Ruby has an attitude that lets her have hope the most. Ren and Nora are also getting the same developments that he did early on, so don't pretend as if Miles is somehow or suddenly writing about side characters for himself.

Weiss yelling "Get back!" with tears in her eyes while shooting Gambol Shroud at 37:05 always gives me chills. It feels very emotional that she's too distraught to think of a witty comeback and symbolic that she is using her friend's weapon.

Weiss stayed the most level headed out of everyone in the fight but when she saw her friends fall she tired staying focus still but the emotions got to her sadly. It breaks my heart because Weiss is my favorite character. :(

I love how they animated Weiss' hands shaking at 37:11, because Weiss does not use guns. She never has, the closest thing she has to a gun are some of her projectile attacks with Myrtenaster, so holding a pistol for what may be the first time would feel weird to her. Not to mention she's, you know, just witnessed the assumed death of three of her closest friends and is kind of running on adrenaline and emotional overload.

I love the sequence of seeing Jaune, Penny, and Weiss ready themselves to fight Cinder at 37:44. We don't normally see these three fight alongside each other, so I lament the fact that they didn't have a 3v1 against Cinder. Also, like if you think Weiss should dual-wield more often. She knocked Neo into the portal with the Staff of Creation at 35:30 and seems to hold her own against Cinder with Gambol Shroud for a short while.

Weiss carried this volume and it shows, she has had the best character development, she’s a bad ass bitch and she fought Cinder while dual wielding Mytrenaster and Gambol Shroud. She lost her family, believing they were dead and continued to fight while crying on the inside. She is my favorite character in this series.

The vibe of these fights feel very different to previous volumes. I really don't know how to describe it though. Best I can do is that they feel less like spectacles, apart from a couple, and more desperate and hard fought.

I get what you mean. Especially the final fight, it felt very much like an unbeatable battle, yet they draw the fight out as long as they could. Witch made the entire impact even better ... In Volume 7 the fights felt more cinamatic and fast paced, but only appeared at the last three episodes.

It feels different in a good way in my opinion. I actually love the fight scenes in this volume because it happened in two days, Weiss is in combat mode again finally, Ruby having a breakdown, no rest for the heroes, Neo still being a badass and Cinder finally winning since volume 3. Felt more like a Marvel endgame fight scene but I'm not complaining. People did wanted the villains to win and it happened and I'm proud which is why volume 8 is my favorite volume with Volume 3 coming second. Just my opinion

The motorbike chase is probably my favorite sequence this volume. It may not be a “fight” in the regular sense, but it’s frenetic, doesn’t take a second to breathe, and the music matches the action perfectly.

The facial journey the animated for Cinder when Rhodes drew his weapons on her was so incredible and heartbreaking. She's still so hopeful at first because now she's free, but then as realization dawns, she is so hurt by his betrayal and lack of support in a pivotal moment. Then, that hurt understandably turns to rage and determination, she's come this close to freedom and no one is going to stop her now. Just a few seconds of changing expressions conveys SO much and it's really a testament to how talented CRWBY is.

I love how they handled Jaune's development as a Huntsman. His improvement is palpable, but he's still quintessentially the same character. He goes from barely being able to hold a sword to slashing through Grimm easily, but he never truly loses his underdog kind of feel: he's still a little clumsy with landings, awkward, and goofy. His strengths are amplified as he grows, but his flaws never really go away. I absolutely love that about him. I just wish they afforded that kind of development to Ren.

Winter was clearly not fighting as hard as she could have been. She just had to give the others more time. Pretty sure that had it just been Cinder and Winter, Cinder would have lost. Cinder clearly was fighting as hard as she could.

@Tommy Cinders09 Winter at the time was distracted by Fria dying and lost focus, she also was up against an enraged Cinder who could summon weapons. In the last fight against Cinder, she held her own even after having been almost shot by Ironwood's weapon and was still able to keep up with Cinder. Had Winter not just been trying to give Weiss and Jaune more time and had simply been fighting Cinder with the hope of legitimately defeating her, she would have won. Winter was already capable of using the winter maiden powers as soon as she got them, but was capable to a somewhat greater extent since she can already control them much better than Cinder could. I would also go so far as to say that Winter started out with much more power overall. She was able to block Ironwood's attack, was able to fight Cinder one-on-one with no help, and would have won had Cinder not attacked Weiss and Jaune. Winter is severely underrated.

The Schnees are able to manipulate their glyphs with dust. What could they do with magic instead? Maiden powers, Summons and glyphs on top of a top fighter in general, Winter now literally IS broken 😂 Out of the 3 maidens we know I'd say utility wise she's the most powerful. Sure Raven's a pretty damn good fighter but so is Winter. Sure, Cinder's semblance comes in handy in combination with maiden powers but there is not such a great variety of what she could do with it. Think of a summon which is enhanced by i don't know fire magic which explodes in your face or which is amplified by stone so you couldn't break it while a maiden who's good at hand to hand combat constantly attacks you and keeps spamming magic and glyphs. I personally hope that they make her set a new strenght tier. She ever sees Cinder again, she should be able to finish her off with a pretty big bang.❄❄❄❄

Imo, both grim are near equal levels of danger and threat, with the Apathy beating out by just a tiny bit. The Apathy being dangerous and threatening in the sense of dread and exhaustion they cause, while the Hound is Dangerous and Threatening since, out of all of the other grim we have seen, he is the first setient grim that can think, act and feel for it own while still remaining loyal, not to mention that it can adapt to it's situation on fly just to perform it's orders

@@SnowBeeQt I mean obviously it's because of the animation changes that occurred at the tansition from v3 to 4 (the animation engine switch + with Monty no longer around...), but I saw someone say something like, the characters being "weaker" actually conveys and sort of embodies the way they felt invincible and full of hope and confidence when they were young students at Beacon, but once the real threat had risen, they felt how weak they actually are against Salem and although they're still young people, their old juvenile briskness sort of dissipated, which, although not ideal in the sense of how enjoyable and exciting it is to watch, does make sense

Ironwood vs JNR, Oscar, Winter, and Emerald is honestly more a testament to how strong Ironwood is than for the rest of the fighters. Dude got ambushed, fought unarmed against 6 people, and his brain literally stopped mid-fight unable to process that he's been betrayed by the one person he didn't expect it from, and still held his own. And he beat Winter less than an hour later (Winter only won due to Penny after she basically lost)

The only thing that makes Penny weaker is because of her emotions. She can hold off for a while but unlike Winter, she is the type that runs or do support teammates rather than being able to fight head on. I know that Penny is powerful, but in this Volume she hold her own. Winter is an Atlas Elite, which was a level with Qrow's but Penny is a little bit under (i mean, weaker) than that.

I love how Jaune getting left behind is basically an accident lol. All the other characters get knocked off by one of Cinder's attacks or traps, but Jaune doesn't make it simply because he couldn't run fast enough and Winter was too distraught to remember he existed.

In a fair fight, I'd agree that Winter would curb-stomp Cinder, but a few key factors swung the fight in Cinder's favour. First, Winter had just newly received the maiden power so while Winter probably had more firepower due to her having full maiden powers, Cinder has her beat in her experience with the use of maiden power. For example in the final fight, Winter only really uses the maiden power to fly, boost her semblance, and generate some wind, both Penny and Cinder were shown to do more with it. Second, Winter came from an emotionally draining fight with Ironwood, the guy was her pesudo-father figure (cuz god knows Jaqu-ass Schnee wasn't) and she literally killed him. While Cinder also fought a bunch of people before Winter, she was winning those fights so there's no reason for her to have bad mental, if anything winning those fights and having everything go well for her was boosting her mental. Third, Cinder has no moral scruples so once Winter had her on the back foot she decided to attack Winter's aura-less (defenseless) sister as a distraction. Which bought her enough time to get the hell outta dodge with TWO entire relics. Fourth, as soon as Cinder was out of the portal she destroyed the teleport system making sure Winter couldn't come after her.

I think CRWBY forgets how much only having one eye debilitates someone, considering Cinder has gone this entire time of having the one eye without any drawbacks even though as a character it would help her. Winter would and probably would win even more because of that debilitating weakness, weird rwby super senses or not. Cinder as a fighter is all over the place, erratic and wrathful with complex strategy saved for division and cheap shots to key players to scramble her worse matchups to better herself against them. Winter is consistent, controlled and while emotionally she’s just the same amount of all over as Cinder here, she’s got control, she retreated in the right moment and such. Cinder’s scaling in the show has always been off which tbh we may find out more of considering she can’t have gone from trained in a basement to global terrorist that fast, even if she’s a prodigy. Salem’s had to have juiced her somehow more than the grim arm, which they forgot AGAIN isn’t protected by aura so she should definitely be more impaired by taking damage through it. Penny blasting her at Amity at least did knock her out and her robot arm did our strength the grim one. Winter beats Cinder in terms of righteousness and for the most part consistency in her abilities but Cinder tbh is just so all over the place in this series it’s hard to even nail where tf she lands on the ladder. TLDR cinder is too wack in this shows already wack scaling that her vs Winter is not a wash because half the time CRWBY doesn’t remember to real world concept in their magic show cause at this point losing an eye don’t bother Cinder and aura scaling is either two touch or hey you got punched in the gut but a two ton Goliath’s punch doesn’t hurt. Good lord I need a better scaled show to watch

Can we just take a moment -(of silence)- to appreciate Ironwood as a character? This beast of a man went from someone we'd expect to come out of a series like RWBY, to straight-up being a modern Tywin Lannister. Willing to put an entire city to the torch to get what he wanted done, and silence anyone foolish enough to open their mouth about his actions. During his ultimatum broadcast, I legit got chills. This was an antagonist done right. Doing everything he could to keep what little of his kingdom alive, and slowly descending into a sociopathic madness the more he lost.

This is a long one, so sit back, grab some popcorn, and get ready to either agree with me, or roast me. People may disagree with me, but I really love the fight scenes recently, and (imo), I say they'll equal to Monty's in their own way. Monty's fight were amazing: They had elegance to them, they were swift and precise. And the camera work in them made it 20x better. But I feel like we never fully explored into the characters strengths and weaknesses a lot. We had scenes where with RWBY v the Nevermore in Volume 1, they had to work together and use their strengths to combat the grimm, and with JNPR v the Deathstalker doing the same thing. But since most fights were with grimm, or goons of the White Fang, we never really saw each of the heroes weaknesses. We only really saw them in fights with stronger grimm or with other characters, or villains, like Roman Torchwick, Neo, Cinder, and more to name. Now it could just be me, but whenever I go back and see the fight scenes, they'll very cool to watch and hook me up, but I just don't see those weaknesses unless it is those scenes. Hopefully I'm not the only one that sees this. With a good amount of Volume 6 fights, Volume 7 fights, and Volume 8 fights, they are 1000x better than Volume 4 and 5 for the most part. They may not have the flashy camera movement that the Monty fights had, or 100% the elegance of them, but you can see that in the fights of Volume 6, 7, and 8, each movement for the most part in the fights are thought out, and they lead to each step, similar to how Monty wanted to make his fight style. Like for example, let's compare the Geist grimm fight from Volume 4 and 7. The Volume 4 fight had some cool scenes in it, but I think we can pretty much agree that it felt slow, clunky kinda. Of course it was the first fight to the new animation program they were using, but for a near 5 minute long fight, I feel like we got robbed. Like, the elegant movement wasn't there, and it was more a way to introduce the audience to the 4 characters, but they could of done it better. With the fight in Volume 7, it was faster (like a 1 minute 30 to 2 minute long fight basically), and at first I thought it really couldn't have been done. But they properly introduced us to the Ace Ops and how they could work together as a team, introducing each of their strengths when paired, and keeping the elegance of the fight. Even compared to Volume 4's Geist, the Geist in Volume 4 kinda moved slow, clunky, like how the characters were. The Geist here, being basically the same shape and size, felt more faster, more powerful as well. Just go back and see the scene where Clover joined the fight, as the Geist is trying to time a stomp to hit Harriet, it sees Vine closing in on it and tries to hit him. Vine dodges the attack though and knocks the Geist into the wall, but it recovered and went for a powerful and deliberate strike on Harriet. This recovery took just less than two seconds, from the time of impact on the wall to the time of impact on the ground with it's first. We can tell a clear difference between how these two fights go, and I feel like CRWBY included this second Geist grimm fight to try and rectify their first one, and imo, they damn well nailed it. Showing that each and every character has an importance in the fight. Now what I do wish for a fight like this is to be slightly longer, but I think we all have to realize that Volume 1 and 2 fights weren't very long either. RWBY and JNPR versus the Nevermore and Deathstalker may have been around 5 minutes combined, but each of those two fights separately (RWBY v Nevermore / JNPR v Deathstalker) were around 1 minute 45 seconds, to about 2 minutes and 30 seconds. Even though they've shown they can do the elegant / fast paced, action thrilling fight scenes, I feel like those aren't 100% to Monty's yet, and they still have a way to grow. However, I did say they'll equal to Monty in their own way, and I mean that. As I said, Monty's fight, up against a typical grimm or goon, never shown the characters weaknesses much. The gang always just kicked their asses 24/7, unless it was Roman, Neo, Cinder, or a few others like the chainsaw dude or the Nevermore grimm. With the newer fights, we're focusing more on usually character v character, or more powerful grimm like the Hound. And here, we can see the characters struggle, we see their weaknesses in the cracks of their strengths. Ruby may be fast and elegant with her semblance, but her weapon is her weakness because it's slow, and heavy built. So up against a normal standard, medium or heavy built grimm, we may not see that weakness. Like how we didn't see it against that alpha grimm in Volume 7 (forgot it's name, sorry). But up against an opponent like Harriet, whose semblance is speed, Ruby couldn't use her weapon because it would slow her down. It's a reason why she used her semblance, to keep distance from Harriet and tire her out. We can physically see that in the Volume 7 fight. It's also a reason why Ruby struggled against Neo, and I feel like a lot of people knew this as well. Ruby's fight style is get up close or disorientate the enemy with her semblance, then go in for the attack with Crescent Rose. She did this with the goons in Volume 1. She was constantly on the move, and closing the gap each time. Neo's fight is with elegant movement, make the enemy tire themselves out before you attack. We see Neo doing this to Ruby during the fight. She's over there standing, just dodging and attacking when needed. Ruby knows this is how Neo fights, but I feel like with the grief of Yang's "death" in her head, so can't think straight. And we can see that, Ruby knows she can't win a 1v1 fight against Neo on attrition, so what does she do. She baits Neo into a trap, which I feel like is also a weakness of Neo (surprisingly). Reason why I say this is a weakness of Neo isn't because it's super easy to bait her or anything. I'm saying this because when you catch her off guard, she loses her elegance and her edge. We can see this partly in Volume 7. Oscar caught her off guard out of nowhere and he got the hit on her. In Volume 8, she thought she was fighting an old lady. Not someone that was previously a huntress that could easily counter her fight style without trying. I feel like she can be caught off guard (not easily, but still) if she thinks you're not around. And I also think that another weakness of Neo is she's almost narrowminded (not badly narrowminded). If she's focused on this one thing, I feel like she doesn't think fully, or keep an eye on her surroundings. We see this when she fights with Maria. She didn't like how an old lady just almost bested her, so she was gonna go for the kill, but she got blasted by Penny. I feel like if she wasn't narrowminded, she would of seen that attack coming. Same thing when Ruby knocked her off the bridge. I feel like if she wasn't focused on killing the person in front of her, she would of reacted against Ruby's plan. I could go on 24/7 about the weaknesses and such we see in the volumes, but I figure I won't. In my opinion, you can make a compelling and very entertaining fight scene a different number of ways. You can either do Monty's style, or this current CRWBY style. Because as I said in my opinion, both of these fight styles are very entertaining and compel us to watch more. What are your thoughts on this essay lol.

I love how now fights have background, I mean not just showing fight but also characters' weaknesses, personalities. Cuz of that ı love Ace Ops vs Rwby fight so much. Also one last thing, about cresent rose slows her down, thats why she spins and makes it dance around her, to gain momentum not just for power but also to covering up her weakness of it. I agree and disagree... Volume 4 and 5 were the weakest volumes in fight scenes. Volume 6 started to show potential again with neo vs cinder and adam vs blake and later with yang. Volume 7 is when it became real good since volume 4, even resembling Monty's style.....however not in volume 8...Volume 8 fights has that charm fight scene from volume 7 but it became less choreographed and just bland to watch. Little fight dynamics (see fight scenes of tyrian, clover, and qrow- these are nicely choreographed and has dynamics).

But I believe that is in part due to them losing Monty and trying to find a fight style that works best for them, which trial and error always works and it did with Volume 6 and 7. I can also see the argument for V. 8. I do agree, the fight scenes aren't as choreographed as Volume 6's Neo V Cinder / Blake + Yang V Adam. Or the fight scenes in Volume 7. But I think the reason why for that extends from two reasons. 1) Maybe they wanted to try to explore the characters strengths and weaknesses more in a fight, which put back the choreographed fights. Or 2) This volume was made during a pandemic, so maybe they had to make due with what they could do at the time. Though your argument still stands. V. 8 wasn't really choreographed. honestly, this volume has some of my favorite fight scenes. my all time favorite may be the ace ops fight, but the fights in this volume were all consistently amazing. The winter, emerald and ORNJ vs ironwood fight, the fight where theyre all on the bikes chasing the hound, the cinder vs rhodes fight, hazels fight against salem, winter v ironwood ("You chose nothing, this was a gift" ALWAYS gives me chills, winter v cinder, theyre all some of my favorite fights in the show. Theres a reason volume 8 is my favorite volume in the series. the new style of fights really improved in volume 7 and 8, and i cannot wait for the fights in volume 9.

I'm a little late with my comments, but I just wanted to say the fights this volume (person against person fights) all felt more weighted and real, like the odds of winning and losing feel so different compared to other volumes (and yes I'm counting Adam and Clover getting shanked sue me) and with Penny's death, team RWBY + Jaune + Neo falling into "whatever the hell you wanna call it" I get the feeling that the fights in Volume 9 are going to be harder than anything we've seen before.
