He was a lot of things in vol.8, but to me he was the most interesting character, an individual losing himself and lost despite him sacrifices his friends, sanity and his soul.

I feel like a lot of people don't really understand the genius that could've been Ironwood's character. I mean Volume 7 did it pretty well, we slowly see Ironwood lose grip of his sanity and with his semblance "Mettle" explains a lot of his actions. But in Volume 8 he just plays the role of your average villain just for plot reasons instead of what they have been building upon: A desperate leader stuck in a dilemma trying not to recreate what happened at Beacon. Nonetheless, Ironwood is still one of my favorite characters in RWBY, just a shame it was poorly executed at the end.

Ironwood was what the world needed. Someone who would find a way to keep things running even without oz. He was the right man for the job. Someone prepared to do anything in order to keep the relics safe, and in turn, keep humanity from being purged by the gods. I keep thinking about how things could have gone differently, maybe if they had told him the truth, if they had talked and tried to figure out how to best use the relic, because chasing team RWBY with penny on board cost them wayyyy too much time. But then again, he probably didn't think that they had anything important to say, and for good reason, he was making all the tough choises untill now, in his eyes, what could they know? But in the end, what's done is done. Our characters did what they thought was best and that's what all of us can ever do. Failure is a part of every story, I just hope they learn from it. I'm just sad that he died.

I really hope ironwood doesn't live past Volume 8, really. He was probably the best crafted character in all of RWBY in V7 only for them to butcher him completely in V8 in my opinion. Rest in Power, General...

I know it's not a very popular opinion but i don't think james is evil and deserves redemption etc. He doesn't have magic powers, he is not chosen from the gods or have silver eyes. He is a simple man that start from very low with the purest motivations and earn his place as a headmaster. He spent his life in active battlefields side by side with others soldiers. With all this years of experience and his semplance general ironwood was a tactical genius. In volume 8 he is the only line of defence left for the relic and perhaps even for all remnant. Team rwby acts with passion and emotions. But emotions cannot stop Salem, james had to fight an impossible war against the armies of salem and his own people. His final moments was alone in the vault trying his best for all of remnant...

Personally, I'm not convinced he's dead. I think his situation was survivable (Atlas didn't land very fast), he could return to the story in a logical way (Qrow and the Ace Ops are in a plane directly above him, would feel some desire to search for survivors, and there'd be drama as a result, plus room for the Qrow-and-Ironwood confrontation that 7 and 8 kept hinting at but never happened) and the show signaled his death much less strongly than the others (they could have pinned him under something or show that he couldn't walk because of a leg injury; could have shown the cave he was in collapse or flood; show one of his guns underwater or a robot hand sticking out of something). The show's not shy about signaling these things, so the fact that they didn't makes me suspicious. This is by no means a guarantee to put all your hopes and dreams on (him dying after finally giving up and realizing the magnitude of his mistakes while on a collapsing Atlas makes perfectly fine thematic sense), but I think him surviving is more than a tinfoil hat "But I want it to be true!" theory like most similar fan theories.

Very well done, Apo!!! (As ALWAYS!! 😄) So many want to blame anyone & everyone for the General's downfall. But, at the end of the day, James Ironwood only had faith in himself and his sembance...... And Salem played on that. I do pity him!! He had a warrior spirit but a tin heart. 😎👍🌹✊😰

Ironwood did nothing wrong, from a certain point of view. He only turned to Martial law once he'd exhausted all other logical options, and he only attacked Team RWBY once they betrayed him to the point where they were themselves the villains. He only attacked Winter because he saw her fighting alongside Emerald, a known associate of Cinder. Raise a glass to James Ironwood: the white knight who sacrificed everything for his pawns.

... Yeah, RT seems to have this belief that they can't make any characters more interesting than the main cast. If they accidentally do, wuh oh, guess the only solution is death. Judging by this I don't think Winter is long for this world. Maybe Qrow isn't either. ANYWAY. Video is really awesome! Tu sais en regardant le volume 8, j'avais espéré qu'Ironwood se rendrait compte de ses erreurs pour enfin collaborer avec Ruby et les autres. Mais au final c'était pas le cas mais malgré tout, j'étais quand même satisfait de son développement ainsi que sa chute. Il était persuadé d'avoir raison et n'écoutait personne pas même Marrow et Winter. Tout ce volume 8 a aussi pointé du doigt les erreurs de Ruby et les autres donc pour moi c'est pas un personnage ruiné. Ton amv est toujours aussi bonne et je crois qu'à ce rythme je serai en cours d'idée pour dire ce que je pense de tes amvs XD

Poor Ironwood, the only actual mature adult in the group and they all betray him. If they had had actually listened to the one man with real military experience instead of their own over emotional childish hearts they might of had a real chance to beat Salem. But I suppose they're all probably going to die now because of this.

(Foreword: Yes, I'm one of those dudes who can't write short comments. I'm sorry😅😅😅). I honestly feel sorry for Ironwood. As for me, he is a very cool character. A rarity in our time - the true hero gradually goes mad, becomes an enemy for the main characters, and at the same time continues to believe that he is doing the right thing until the end. Eventually, dies, with no redemption. In this, the general reminds me so much of Adam (who I also like very much. As for me, the most underrated character who deserve a lot more screen time). And how can you blame Ironwood for anything at all? James had so much on his plate at once, anyone would go crazy. The only thing I didn't like about the story was that no one focused on Ironwood's Semblance, Mettle. Ace Ops and Winter were with him almost to the end. But none of them mentioned that all James does is the effect of his Semblance. I think the scene where Ironwood attacks Winter was very appropriate for that. Instead of starting a fight with the general, Winter could at least try to help him and ask him to stand up against his Semblance. And the moment when he let out a tear... I think James wasn't in control, it was all his Semblance. And this tear was a sign that the real Ironwood was locked up somewhere, trying to get rid of the influence of his Semblance, but he couldn't. So, I like to think that Ironwood, from the end of Volume 7 and all of Volume 8, was obsessed with Semblance, and almost couldn't resist. Hell, he'd sacrificed his own arm under Semblance's influence, getting a wound that would have knocked an ordinary person out in an instant. He left a huge number of people to die. This is completely different James that we saw in the earlier volumes. What else is this, if not proof that such a powerful and influential person was broken and frightened by all the horror that is happening in the Atlas? He's tired of fighting, but he keeps fighting. His soul was simply tormented by doubts, fear and distrust. The "betrayal" from team RWBY and the open threat from Salem was the last straw. General James Ironwood was so completely broken that he didn't even notice that his innate gift, Mettle, had become his enemy and jailer. He set all those who were dear to him against him. A tragic story of a well-written character.

Finally someone actually has the same idea of Ironwood as I do. I mean he was so sure he was doing the right thing that he ended up becoming an enemy. Its as the saying goes "You either die a hero or you live long enough to become the villain." Ironwood did exactly that he lived long enough to become the villain despite believing he was doing the right thing. Also I agree he is like Adam. Potential heroes who lived long enough to become the villains.

Imma straight up say it, Ironwood deserved so much better than what Roosterteeth gave him. In spite of all the mixed feelings I've had about some of the storytelling decisions in the show, I've legitimately enjoyed all 8 seasons thus far, and will likely continue to enjoy the seasons to come, but... If there's two things that make me utterly furious, its what Roosterteeth did with Penny and Ironwood in season 8. At least you did Ironwood justice, as the epic character he truly was and should've continued to be
