What I loved a lot about Ice Queendom is the fact they showed what Weiss and her glyphs were capable off. Weiss was using dust, glyphs and her rapier in succession and not just summoning and we need to get back to that.

I think I figured out what's "wrong" with Shion's visual design: it's too busy. RWBY, especially V1, had to work within the limitations of low-end 3D software of the day. So the designs had to be fairly flat but still read well at speed. They have a few key details, but are mostly formed from simple shapes that can read decently well in silhouette. Shion was made for the anime. That means their design doesn't have limitations, so the animators get to do whatever they want. You can also see this with most of the designs for team RWBY within the nightmare world. They're *way* more busy, with more details than their canonical designs (at least, the early canonical designs).

Also, can I add that I hate the intro for IQ? Not the song, I have it on my phone, but the visuals. It's so downright lazy, using stock footage for it, it's one of the rare openers that I skip over every time because it's not exciting or well-made. I thought it was only going to use stock footage during the first three episodes, and then when we finally get into the nightmare, we'd change it to the *real* intro, but nah.

The part that baffles me is if this series was something like 8 years in the making, why does it feel so rushed? I honestly do respect the sentiment they had to keep their promise to Monty wanting to make an anime, but the state of this anime can feel more like they needed something to pad out the Volume 9 delay, than something legitimately planned across almost a decade. I'd say the ship scene where they streamlined multiple episodes of character intros and exposition was the only part in the whole show where I felt "Wow, they've really thought about this."

Agreed. They're half the family of team RWBY. Yang's purpose was to find her mom and get answers. team STRQ was as popular as team RWBY and played a major role in the world. RUBY is a blank slate, they could have given her a purpose related to her family. The focus should have been on team RWBY and the STRQ family.

I would never expect Judge to make a full blown rewrite of RWBY, but I have always wondered what she would do with these characters and this story. Just like a 20 minute video on how/where she would take this story would be really interesting. Anyways great podcast! My only thought is if you had like jot notes/points, and then get all your feelings out a specific point, and then move onto a new point, would have made this more organized? The whole podcast did admittedly kinna feel like a mush of ideas - HOWEVER - I actually understand that because the podcast felt like two people venting a lot of feelings that they haven't been able to express elsewhere - so I understand!!! Like I'm not trying to be a jerk - at all. I just found it a bit hard to follow because they'd say, "Now we're gonna talk about (blank)," and then proceed to talk about something other than (blank) for a while and then (blank) never really gets discussed - happened a few times in the video. But I totally understand - it's clearly just two people relaying their thoughts. Just something that I was thinking during the entire course of this podcast. Anyway, I love Celtic Pheonix and Judgemental Critter SO MUCH ♥️♥️♥️

To be honest, Ice Queendom had a lot of problems (most of which you two do an amazing job putting into words and exploring here). But at the same time, it's the first time in a long while that anything RWBY related put a genuine smile on my face. It's silly and it has its issues, but it feels closer to the show and characters that I fell in love with years ago than anything the actual show has done in recent memory.

I'm curious if we got a fundamental idea of the nightmares wrong and it's less the rawest Id of the person and more the there the person they'd hate to be, jaune hates and fears being a useless baby carry, Weiss despises the idea of being her father's attack dog and the best way to express that if the scar on her face is a badge of honour for her in reality and a symbol of her freedom and Blake sees the white fang becoming Adams ideal and she fears following that path so her fear of becoming another Adam a sadistic monster who uses legitimate problems to allow him to indulge in his sadism and anger. In essence the dreams I feel especially for Weiss are picking at every bad thought she's had and hurting her by saying this is you.

I think a neat thing they could have done with Jaune, while also having a moral quandary with being in the mindscape is - have Jaune feel compelled to save the sillies, despite Weiss both consciously and unconsciously wanting them to be locked away, and by fighting Weiss's innate will so much, you could cause damage to the real Weiss and possibly even kill her due to the strain on her mind and personality you are inflicting meanwhile, Jaune wants to be a hero so much that he still acknowledges these people aren't real to the outer world, but his rationale is "they are real here, so they must be saved and set free" or even by extension, by saving these mini-weiss and Pyra that Jaune is saving the real weiss and brushes any critique of his plan aside, as "how could releasing someone's inner child be bad? She should embrace it and it'll be for the better" - essentially putting his own thoughts and values onto Weiss, only for it to eventually backfire and he might end up having a decent arc - maybe this could also play into how evil Weiss is defeated, only for everyone to then have to fix the damage done to her or.... just not have Jaune in it at all, like... in-universe it makes sense, I guess, but meta-wise he does nothing and really could be written out. "oh, but he saves Ruby!" Yeah...... and there are a thousand other ways she could have been saved, and the same applies to any other contribution he had

I don't see what's so "baffling" about the nightmares as they're portrayed in the show. Jeanne's nightmare: being scared & weak. Weisse's nightmare: being trapped in her broken family and becoming what her father wants her to be (a holier-than-thou, xenophobic despot like himself). Blake's nightmare: Adam and his ideology (being a vengeful psychopath who uses violence & fear to get what he wants and calling it "judgement" for humanity's crimes against faunus). It all seems pretty clear and understandable to me.

With the relics, I assumed they were places Weiss was resisting the Grimm, and the relics were what represented it. When they take the relics from their places, the nightmare closes in and takes over(the dorm room and silly jail). It's not explained in the show, but that was my conclusion.

Original RWBY was what American thought anime was in bad and good way I think it made a lot of the character compelling because you could tell the type of character they were going for but it was just off enough to be it's own thing Ice Queen bridges the gap and you're just left with that exact characters you've watch many times already done worse.

Just as you mention the dub, i have to say that some of the characters mostly Weiss and Blake seem really hit and miss they have snippits of good but most of the time they are really dull, it feels very first reading. Also Ruby having the high pitched voice in volume 1 sounds so odd to me.

The humor of the show was weak in the og series anyway lol the writing has always been inconsistent so any adaptation will need to figure out the tone. Humor is subjective but i think rwby's initial fanbase was built around rt's fan and its history with inside jokes and gags that the cast has that the fans are familiar with

Celtic Phoenix throwing some hard shade at fate despite the fact that Fate/Zero isn't the best out there. Carnival Phantasm is a glorious comedy and F/GO just has parts so much better to me than Fate/Zero. The 5th story chapter of F/GO part two is just phenomenal. "Stars, Cosmos, Gods. Ansus, Antrum, Unbirth. Anima, Animusphere."

I don't remember where they said it, but I think the silver eyes were like something they pulled because they didn't know what to do at the end of Volume 3 and they were running out of time. Quite literally a Deus Ex Machina, which might be why they took so long to explain it. A little detail I thought was neat about IQ was that you actually saw Weiss reloading her weapon, it was weirdly satisfying.

Mr. Popo is based off of a specific design, but I don't think the intention was to invoke black face imagery. Akira Toriyama has drawn many black characters before, and even in the same series. They just look like black people in his art style, they don't look like Mr. Popo so I don't think the intention was to invoke an image of that. Also shocked to hear that you like Ruby's voice at all tbh. Always hated the sound of it regardless of the volume; it never gets better.
