RWBY Theory - The Spirits of the Relics

Soon we will likely see the relic of Creation removed from Atlas and perhaps meet the spirit that dwells within it. Let's see where this spirits inspiration could come from, as well as the inspiration for the other relics...

The sword in the stone, Excalibur, heralded the coming of the King of the Britons. The one who would pull the sword from the stone would unite the world and heal the land after ages of darkness. This could be the fate of Juane. His aura would be powerful enough to pull the sword from a stone and he alone would be able to wield it for whatever reason and it would be used for whatever purpose it was intended. Don't know what those reasons would be exactly. He could also eventually posses all the relics to bring about the reunion of the gods and mankind after the defeat of Salem. just a theory.

Also, Jaune's colour scheme is now very similar to the Relics; the Relics are gold and cyan, Jaune's shield is now white, gold, and cyan (for hard light dust). Since he also wields a sword, I'd be willing to bet he'll be important in some way to the Sword Of Destruction.

I've always thought of Glynda being the protector of the relic. Oz said that he made the crown harder to find than the others, and Cinder said that the relic wasn't in the vault. My head-canon is that the crown is actually *in* Glynda's cape.

Personally my thought for the creation relic is someone modeled after The Fairy Godmother in Cinderella. She sorta fits your theme too - not a main character, but important to drive the plot, blue tons (in the Disney animation, specifically), etc. And her whole thing is creation.

the sword of destruction could be Kusanagi from Japanese mythology. Kusanagi, (Japanese: “Grass-Mower”), in Japanese mythology, the miraculous sword that the sun goddess Amaterasu gave to her grandson Ninigi when he descended to earth to become ruler of Japan, thus establishing the divine link between the imperial house and the sun. The sword, along with the mirror and jeweled necklace, still forms one of the three Imperial Treasures of Japan.

I was thinking about Kusanagi myself. The WoR episode on the Great War shows a scene of fiery destruction and refers to unique weather conditions when describing the King of Vale's use of the sword, which could fit with the lore of Kusanagi being used by Yamato Teraku to command the wind and turn the fires meant to trap him against his enemies.

@@dragonoidmagnus837 I would definitely love to see Jaune wielding the Sword, which would certainly fit with the Excalibur interpretation since his character has a lot of references to knighthood. The issue of who would be able to wield the sword will probably come up regardless, since both Excalibur and Kusanagi have specific ties to royalty and the idea that only certain people are "worthy" to wield it. That could fit with Jaune, since some sort of unknown power or lineage might be the reason for Tyrian's cryptic comment back in volume 4 about "You (Jaune) do interest me."

That or the sword will test team RWBY and APNR (Arc, Pine, Nora, Ren or some oddly combo) to see who among them are worthy to weld it. Also i would love it if the sword has found its true welder, it becomes soul bound or inprints itself to the person it found worthy. It could be interesting to have Oscar be the one to retrieve the sword from the lake. It would make him appear as both Merlin and King Arthur, maybe the spirit referencing how it was a past lifetime that threw it in, in the first time. Kind of like how each in the past has taken from both aspects of the fairy tale, like Blake being both the Beauty and the Beast.

oh something I just thought of in regards to Jinn. In Aladdin, going into the cave and getting the lamp was a trap. Jafar was his own inside man in the Sultan's castle. What happened at Haven? Salem had an inside man in the form of Leo, and Cinder set a trap inside Haven for Ruby and our Heroes. Not to mention much like how Jafar needed to use another to get the Lamp from the Cave of Wonders, Cinder also needed to use another to get the Lamp of Knowledge from Haven's Vault. Also I STILL do not see Glynda being the Spirit of Choice.

When you said Soul Eater...I knew exactly what you were talking about, welp. "EXCALIBUR! EXCALIBUR! EXCALIBUR! From The United King, I'm Looking For Him, I'm Going to Californiaaaa!" I would continue but I think youtube would hate how long it went. Anyway, what I was thinking with the sword is more on the line of another running series, albeit a book series but still. The sword Malentarch (I think that's its name?) or The Mortal Sword from The Shadowhunter Chronicles. Where it's not much spirit-based but has a lot of different powers that in my opinion give it some sentience. It compels shadowhunters to tell the truth as it's the primary function, but it has the secondary function of eliminating/purging all demon blooded creatures touched with its light. This however is very complex to achieve, because the sword required two things a pure angel-blooded being, an Angel or Shadowhunter that has pure angel blood, and a bolt of lightning. (this is actually the show version, not the book version however they didn't clarify how it worked in the book, Valentine just wanted to turn it to a dark side of itself. Which could be another cool thing that our sword can do.) With that in mind maybe the sword could work like that in the RWBY universe, except the angel blooded being would be replaced by someone with oh I don't know Silver eyes limiting its use so that not everyone can use it. Follow up, maybe it could even act that it destroys what the user believes to be a threat. So if its a huntsman it can be the grim, but if it's Salem then all humanity. Those are my two cents on how it could work, but I do see some flaws in it.

I also think that Glynda is the relic of choice. If we look back at the food fight what did Glynda say under her breath. "They are suppose to be the ones to save the world......" Also in Volume 8 the creation relic smoke is blue, just like the blue fairy as you pegged it. Also who did Ruby meet first, Glynda, and then she was given a choice by Ozpin, a choice that would forever change her life and others

I’m probably really far off but has anyone noticed that pyrras head price looked similar to the relic of choice upside down? Not only that but after Pyrras death the only thing left what her head piece. Salem did say she hasn’t been able to find the relic of choice but maybe that’s because Salem’s looking for a vault and no one realizes it’s right under their nose. I’d find it very interesting for rwby to make a full circle and go back to becan to grab Pyrras crown. Edit: completly forgot Pyrras crown was merged with Jauns sheild

can I just say Atlas actually does somewhat follow the theme you came up with, as in the Story of Hercules he more or less served as a plot device to get past the dragon guarding the Golden Apples(atlas could do so because the nymphs tending the garden the apples were in were his daughters) though a more fitting inspiration would be a Spear from Japanese mythology, the Amenonuhoko, which was used by Izanagi to create the first island A fitting inspiration for the Sword of Destruction I found after a quick search is Asi from the Mahabharata as it's purpose is literally to destruction of the enemies of the gods, hell it's even stated to be made from a demon Edit: Or maybe Surtr who destroyed asgard with a flaming sword

I think it could be possible the sword of destruction would be a creature who’s tied to destruction, for example Jormangundr from Norse myth, Typhon from Greek or Tiamat from Mesopotamia

Is there any evidence for/against Jaune's sword being the Sword of Destruction in disguise? When Jaune was introduced he was, as Phoenix/Night phrased it, "annoying as all hell!" His Aura is also severely overpowered, to the point where even Tyrian took an interest in him during the Volume 4 fight (though I don't recall if it was his personal interest or Salem's interest). Crazy idea 1: He pulls it from the sheath/shield, so that could be "pulling it from the stone" since metal starts off in ore (stone-like) form. Crazy idea 2: When we first meet Jaune, he hasn't unlocked his Aura. That happens in Volume 1, and his Semblance is unlocked in Volume 5. We've seen how Ozma/Ozpin's conscience has traveled from person to person over eons, so we know that at least one person has the ability to jump in this fashion. It's already been established that Jaune's sword and shield belonged to his grandfather, who was a hero during the Great War. Could it be possible that the entity attached to the sword could pass down generationally, as Ozpin does, living in a small corner of the owner's mind and only revealing itself whenever there is the greatest need for it (i.e. a world war)?

That's an intersting theory, I was thinking about the Blue Fairy the other and thinking we didn't have seen her yet. About the Sword of Destruction, the Lady of the Lake is a good Idea but being hidden in Vacuo, I expect a more eastern inspiration like Kali, the indian goddess of destruction. And I thought of something not directly related, Emerald being inspired by Aladin, she may be the one who will steal the Lamp from Salem if/when she turns sides.

I kinda hope that the sword of destruction's spirit looks like Pyrrha and that it ends up being wielded by Jaune, since he and Qrow are the only good sword users in the group. I prefer that but it could look like Summer and be used by Qrow, but I find that less likely.

As it’s a sword of destruction I’d like to add a Muramasa sword, blades made by the great blacksmith were said to have such a thirst for blood that if it was drawn it could only be sheathed after tasting blood, often driving wielders to harm themselves to feed the mad swords’ bloodlust. Maybe it has immense psychological defenses that those who give into its bloodlust go crazy and lose their sanity if they use it too long kinda like the “one ring to rule them all” except they become berserk Ryuko from Kill La Kill

Because so far all we know about them. (Which is a fair amount.) 1: All of the relics were hidden in a vault under the academies. That requires a maiden to unlock. (Unless the theory of glynda being the relic of choice theory being true.) 2: The relics were created by the gods. (God of light.) 3: The relics can attract grimm. (Which was used as an plot device. And kind of inconsistent.) 4: So far, we only know of the relics of creation and knowledge abilities. (Also, i had an idea. On what type of question, ruby could of asked jine, back in vol 6 or 6. Untill the relic was stolen.) What can i do with my silver eyes? (Or maybe.) How do i master, my silver eyes? (Or at least, something that involved her silver eyes.)

I know I haven't watched the video you posted 4 days ago, the one about The Casualties of Volume 8, and the reason I didn't watch it is because I don't want to know about it, cause it's just your theory of what's going to happen in the upcoming season, and honestly, I don't want to get nervously worried about what will happen to any of the characters we all know, so I'm hoping for a miracle to happen somewhere in volume 8, don't know what kind of miracle, but dammit, it better be a good one.

The Blue Fairy does have a role in Pinocchio, but the one character that seems to be overlooked in this line of thought was shown right behind her: Jiminy Cricket. I haven't seen the Disney movie since I was a kid, but if I recall the fairy only had two appearances in the film (beginning and ending), and while important, Jiminy was in the movie from start to finish. I'm wracking my brain trying to figure out who he would be, but I haven't figured out any RWBY character who would correlate to him. If anyone can find a corollary, please let me know. I'm sure that if someone were to ID the RWBY character the significance would fall into place.

I saw Calixyn's theory about that and although it is an interesting idea, there are a few things that came to mind that don't seem to fit with me. The main one being that if Summer was in a relationship for long enough that she became pregnant and carried the child for 9 months, how would no one on Team STRQ or Ozpin not have known? I feel like that's something that would have been mentioned by now if it was the case. There's also the fact that it seem any child of a Silver-eyed warrior also has Silver Eyes. I.e. Maria and her father, Ruby and Summer. And then Cinder's age. Although we don't know how old she is, it seems very likely that she was at least early to mid twenties in Volumes 1-3 and just looked young enough to pass for a student. If that is Cinder's age range, then I don't think it would fit with STRQs timeline. Though admittedly we don't know all that much about their timeline, like how long after graduating did it take till Raven had Yang, etc. Just my initial thoughts on the idea, now Cinder being related to Ironwood is another case entirely 😁

I'm pretty sure we already got the blue fairy in Fria, she did confirm that Penny is in fact a real girl after all. A character we haven't gotten yet on the other hand is the Fairy Godmother from Cinderella. It would be apt with Cinder herself hinting at an Atlas heritage.

I think the idea of all four relics having a spirit within them is really cool but at the same time it would also be cool if that is something special that only the relic of knowledge has. Because I also like the idea of all the four relics being unique from each other and functioning in different ways. Plus I just can't imagine the sword of destruction having a spirit inside of it.

The crown of choice would also befit the fairy godmother from Cinderella, and with Cinder being the maiden who has the ability to open that vault would work just as well as the pinocchio plot in Atlas and arguably Alladin (Oscar Pine, weak but only connection I can make) and the Genie.

One thing to note though is in some other video you made a suggestion perhaps the three rulers (human) Salem rallied against the gods got turned into spirits of the relics as a form of punishment. you argued how the Asian looking woman could be Jhin. but of the three rebelling rulers we had 2 men. If we assume Glinda is the spirit of choice, then somehow the spirits of destruction (sword) and creation (staff) have to either be based on male characters or a genderbender case. I could see the medieval ish king with grey hair and beard be based on Arthurian lore by becoming a Merlin-esque character for the sword of destruction (not a main character, magic, related to sword, male). but that would leave a male character for the staff of creation

A another good idea could be to do a similar thing to a weapon from the anime Asterisk war. Where you have two powerful daggers that most people only could have for a couple of days. I've always been curious why Jin says that she cannot answer the future when Ruby asks what Ozpins hiding from them but when Cinder asks what are they planning (RWBY) Jin answers telling Cinder something in the future which she is not supposed to. She shows Cinder their escape plan before it's been created. Am I the only one or has anyone else noticed that?

Well, i have an idea on how Glynda came to be. Since the spirits are bound to the relic they possess/came from, i like to think that Glynda's body is that of a humunculus (possibly created by Ozpin), and due to the relic being inside her she gains life, aura. I would like to believe that Glynda Goodwitch is the first synthetic human with a perfect aura generator (I.E the relic), thus giving her a semblance and as i've said before, an aura.

Fun fact: the sword in the stone and the sword from the lady of the lake are actually to different swords. The sword in the stone and the one to deem Arthur worthy of being king is Caliburn while the sword from the lake is Excalibur.

Another possible reference for the sword of destruction I could think of is Stormbringer from Michael Moorcock's Elric series. Stormbringer is a cursed sword similar to the Norse legend Tyrfing. Though I wouldn't know what "spirit" would accompany it besides perhaps a mini clone of the god of darkness, perhaps? 😈

I would assume that if any artifact is based off of the sword in the stone would be the Crown of Choice actually, as since in the Arthurian Tale the Sword in the Stone is what proves Arthur's bloodline as a Pendragon and makes him the King of England, perhaps in that case they would use Merlin as the inspiration for the spirit of the crown or they could still use the Lady of the Lake.

The sword i could see as Ares, there was a sword wielded by geghins khan called the sword of mars (the roman version of ares) and khan destroyed pretty much everything in his path so would make sense. As fir the spear im thinking the japanese goddess of creation igizuami. And the crown either your theory or that being king arthur seeing as he was prophesied to unite all of england together and the fact that oz couldve hidden the crown in the tomb of the king of vale. Thats my opinion though

You could make the argument that Fria was the blue fairy from the Pinocchio story, aside from her colors being blue: by transferring her maiden powers to Penny she made her a “real” girl. On another note I am sticking with my theory with the sword of destruction that in order to use it you have to give up something of yourself, a law of equivalent exchange sort of thing.

It’s obviously an Ozpin incarnation that gives him the crown. Perhaps knowing that Glynda would be a good match for the king. However, the widow in that story uses the same crown to supplant Glynda (the spirit of the crown)

Ever since seeing the volume 8 opening, it feels like the colors of the relics are based off the god of light (gold and cyan), maybe the relic of choice and destruction are based off the god of darkness(black and red).

Another possibility for the Sword of Destruction could be a reference to Durendal, the sword of Rolds with Oscar being Roland. The spirit within would be reference to Mary, mother of Jesus as I think the Infinite Man(judging both from the story and picture related to the story) is a reference to Jesus. It would also be fitting as it would be Oscar as the latest saint saves the world by slaying Salme's massive army just like how Roland slew a vast number of enemies and sent his enemy's army away(and would also be a good callback to the King of Vale slaying all those warriors in the Great War that happened prior to the main series atarting). There is also local lore of Roland having hidden the sword away in a cave due to its sharpness and it wouldn't be surprising that like the other vaults under the academies, the Sword's vault is cave like and maybe is partially a natural formation. Like the legend, the sword had a previous owner(Charlemagne in the legend) and a previous version of Ozpin in Rwby. However, after the battle it's kind of sad, as Roland ends up being mortally woulnded.(this is interesting in itself as the legendary Irish hero Oscar also fights an army of evil and dies after sustaining a mortal injury) as is possible with Oscar and Ozpin fighting together and dealing Salem's death blow at the cost of his own life.

What I think each relic spirits might be: Relic of creation: the blue fairy makes sense to complete the Pinnochio ensemble, but I think the fairy godmother from cinderella might be a good candidate as well. I mean the fairy godmother creates stuff but has a limitation to her magic as seen by the time limit of 12 at midnight (it is somewhat similar to the limitation that the relic of creation has of only doing 1 creation task at a time.) Relic of Destruction: Merlin would be another good candidate for the relic if they think Lady of Vivane is too much of an obvious choice as he was the one that persuaded or requested Lady Vivane to pass the sword to King Arthur. Relic of Choice: This is a pretty hard one to find a candidate. For, not a lot of fairy tales have an important side character that predicts the future. But I think maleficent counts, as even though she curses Aurora in the story...she did predict her fate, well technically. (this makes sense as it kind of matches up with the powers of the relic of choice, where tho it can predict the future in a straight path... it doesn't necessarily mean it can be a good future.) Edit: A better candidate for the relic of choice might be Princess Cassandra. She was given the ability to predict the future but no one believed her abilities. And considering in the fairy tale of the widow and the king, they didn't really do anything much with the relic other than locking it up. So... it may hint at Cassandra being the spirit.

actually I think this concept of one of the relics being able to cause annoyance (or any other kind of negative reaction) upon most people is very interesting like, it's a genuinely good way of keeping the relic secure, with only a maiden (or at least someone as powerful as one) having the mental willpower to resist the negative energy and gather the relic safely

Based on the list of D&D elemental genies (and knowing there is players among CRWBY), my bet is relic will be inhabited by : - an efreet for relic of destruction (element fire) - a dao for relic of creation (element earth) - a marid for relic of choice (element water) (and of course jinn being a djinn for relic of knowledge, element air), possibly, elements water and earth symbolism could be inverted, but if my guess is right fire symbolism is pretty sure. forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Genie (and of course I know it's inspired by arabic mythology...)

Okay, these are more half-baked ideas and wants as opposed to legitimate theories, but hear me out. Creation - Being the Blue Fairy would be a pretty safe bet. As you said, it would polish off the Pinocchio theme and cast quite nicely. However, an alternate idea that would also round out a separate cast would be having the spirit reference the Fairy Godmother, rounding out Cinder/Cinderella’s theme. Unless, of course, Salem is Cinder’s version of the Fairy Godmother. Destruction - I mean, c’mon. It’s going to be Excalibur. The spirit is more than likely also going to be The Lady of the Lake (although it would be interesting to see King Arthur, Merlin, or Morganna appear instead). If they didn’t want to go that route, though, they could reference Kusanagi, with the spirit being Amaterasu. An idea I heard awhile ago that I thought was interesting would be having there be two spirits for the relic of destruction; Muramasa and Masamune. That’s an out-there one, though. Choice - this a tough one. Glinda isn’t a bad idea. But some more obscure ideas I have for the spirit. Hecate, the Goddess of magic, CROSSROADS, and night. Plus, she could be represented by the three-in-one Goddess as the maiden, mother, and crone. Another, definitely out there idea would be having the spirit be the Goddess, Hel. But the only reason I think that would fit is that she’s depicted as a split-faced goddess. Probably not enough to go off of, but it’s something!

Indeed, in one of the newer adaptation of this tale in animé ( fate) gilgamesh the demi-fond king of uruk as a word, ea, named the sword of rupture. It might be a cool reference to have the sword of DESTRUCTION to be based on the sword of RUPTURE. And yes I do say this because I'm a big fan of the Fate series and yes I do know this might be completely false.

Btw, Japan has a literal mythological staff of creation Amenonuhoko (天沼矛 or 天之瓊矛 or 天瓊戈, "heavenly jeweled spear") is the name given to the spear in Shinto used to raise the primordial land-mass, Onogoro-shima, from the sea. It is often represented as a naginata.[1] According to the Kojiki, Shinto's genesis gods Izanagi and Izanami were responsible for creating the first land. To help them do this, they were given a spear decorated with jewels, named Ame-no (heavenly) nu-hoko (jewelled spear), by older heavenly gods. Literal staff of creation! Also it would be cool for every relic to be from a different culture. Jinn is Arabian&Islamic, Excalibur is European, the Staff is Japanese and the crown... ok... well, the crown looks like a European crown too.

I always wondered why the question, "how do i save Salem?" wasnt asked? The god of light clearly said we will return to judge humanity, in hopes that humans will have learned better ways essentially. Destroying Salem doesnt seem like itd be part of that circumstance

One interesting thing I don't see these videos bringing up is that, while the Disney Movie made the Genie of the Lamp the most famous one it is not the only genie in the story. In fact, it is the weakest one and the truly impressive item is Aladdin's ring which contains the much more powerful Genie of the Ring. And that got me thinking. The sword in the stone is Caliburn, lesser to Excaliber. Glynda the Good Witch is lesser to Ozma, the True Queen of OZ. The Blue Fairy is called out in story as "just a fairy", implying that the hierarchy in that world goes higher. All of them are important plot forwarding magical figures like you suggested, but they are also explicitly NOT the most powerful beings/objects in their world.
