RWBY Theory - Glynda herself IS the Relic of Choice

Glynda goodwitch has always been a character I and many others have wanted to know more about, her past, how she met Ozpin, etc. I've always thought that Glynda had some connection to the relic of Choice and Beacon's Vault but a thought occurred to me recently, what if Glynda is actually the spirit of the relic? What if she is the relic? These are my ideas on this theory and I would love to see what you all think in the comments below!

@@eliezerbrion280 I mean, I know we've already seen who Salem is, and was in the past. But what if Glynda IS Salem. Like, shes a cover up for Salem, since she's not been around for an unknown reason. (given other characters haven't been as well, this could be ruled out.) She could have been trying to gain back the trust of Oz without striking fear in him, as it would walking up as Salem herself. We've seen that Glynda is a very powerful huntress in the show, and so is Salem. (Now this part is a stretch, but goes with the video theory.) She could have some kind of shape-shifting power as well, and she uses that to hide her true self.

Cinder is identifiable by her glass queen chess piece, she’s the fall maiden (correlates with the crown of choice) and she wants power. They’re going to make her make a choice. It’s all symbolic. They also haven’t used Glenda since the fall of beacon, showing that she’s not an important character.

In fullmetal alchemist, the oldest homunculus, Pride, takes the form of a little boy. When the protagonists fid out about it, they go through pictures detailing the same little boy near people in positions of power, with his age shifting from younger to older, so it would be appropriate that if Glynda was the relic, she could change her appearance minimally to appear older or younger and then even disguise herself as a new person.

Something else to take into consideration, since we don’t have a good idea as to how the relic works, what if glynda is supposed to be an ‘oracle’. Someone that the relic of choice speaks through. Rather than glynda being the spirit, she’s compatible with the spirit and the only way to use the relic is by wearing it and having it speak through someone. Obviously it wouldn’t be smart for ozpin to use it himself, especially when he was the king. So maybe he has a special advisor who uses the relic for him, and glynda is that advisor?

If Ozpin was constantly supplying magic to Glynda, what are your thoughts on what that means for her post-v3 with (Headmaster) Ozpin's death? We haven't seen her onscreen at all post-v3, and we've just had that one reference from Prof. Port in v4 that she is "working round the clock to restore Beacon to its former glory". The one time we see her onscreen after Ozpin dies is at the very end of v3 (during Salem's voice-over), where we see her trying to rebuild something with her semblance, but failing. Could that be a sign that she's weakening without Ozpin alive? Do you think that Glynda, the person, could fade away even though the relic itself would obviously endure? It will be interesting to see if/how Glynda returns to the story when the action inevitably shifts back to Vale a few volumes down the road.

I like the idea, however somewhat of a counter theory, the relic of choice grants a person great magical power but it merges with a human disappearing from view, so it is a persons choice to accept this power. Basically it turns a person into something a kin to a maiden in power. When the person has the power of the Relic the only way to retrieve it is to have the Fall Maiden decide to kill them to make the choice of killing them or losing the Relic all together.

I know it's not related to the relic of choice but I think I have a theory on the relic of creation. I believe it is based on the Blue Fairy from Pinocchio. We've seen the vault and it's has a bluish theme to it. We also see that there's alot of Pinocchio themes being introduced between Penny, Pietro, Monstro etc. I think they will use this staff and it has the power to make Penny into a real girl so that she can become a true person. The Blue Fairy could bring pinocchio to life and make him into a real boy. Adjusting this to the RWBY story I could see a Fairy being the deity of the lamp. I think that with the Relic can create many things and if someone's aura is around like Penny you can bet it can create a new real body for her, yes it can only do one thing at a time but I don't think there's any "3 question limit" on it because it's continuously emitting energy. I don't think it can raise the dead no. But if someone's aura/soul is still around then the relic has a lot more leeway to create/change their Aura even if their Aura is inside someone else (namely if pyrrha's soul is inside of Cinder). Monty was smart and I could see him doing this 2 birds one stone. No clue on the relic of choice but it's based on a fairy tale/fable so who knows. I think we need to rely on the stories and fairy tales/legends to an extent to guide us with regards to the relics. I don't think Crwby is going to stretch it too much with them character wise.

Dude I absolutely love this theory, the only thing that makes me think that it might not be true is the fact that she seems to becoming more human already in her characteristics, emotions, mannerisms etc so she might not not need to. We have already seen she is "human" enough to gain the maiden powers. However, maybe these are just steps to her becoming FULLY human, as you said. I'm really excited for how this might play out in volume 8.

@@scoopadifuego I know they're playing around with it too much to not note it. She's changing more and more it seems as you say a stepwise change. Slow but steady. It's hinting at it we'll have to see how it goes down in volume 8. The Blue fairy used a "wand" which kinda looks like a staff if you think about it. There are other stories with staffs and creations but they aren't super well known alot of them are downright obscure and people look to far into the weeds I think. It has to be a well known fairy tale that can fit with characters in the arc/kingdom ideally from a writing standpoint and they have a good thing with the fairy.

It's a good theory. It also helps that her emblem is that of a crown (like the relic although it looks like a tiara), if this were to be true it would factor in how The Good witch from the wizard of Oz can turn into a Bubble much like how Jinn shares the lamp idea with genies. As the Relic Of Choice Glynda would have more power possibly choosing to age herself to keep up the lie that she's human. That said she seems to not take any of Oz' crap implying she has her own personality and isn't fully on board with him. Her summoning a storm while likely magic can also be elaborate dust use. I will say that her appearing in After the Fall and being brought up repeatedly when comparing to Carmine definitely I moly's she's gonna be more important later on. (Once they recast her voice actress) plus assuming Glynda was the extra measures in place it would explain why Cinder couldn't have gotten the relic from Beacon and why Glynda seems to be staying around Beacon to help repair instead of hunting down Ozpin

I have always thought Glynda was the choice relic since season 4. One of the main reasons is because she doesn't exactly seem to understand/display human emotion and is dedicated to the choices she makes. This is seen in the food fight episode where she gets annoyed at the students as they are supposed to be the "defenders of the world" - almost as if she is angry at them because they are not taking their choice to become huntsmen/huntresses seriously Also agree with the points made in this video and have been thinking them for awhile, especially because of the crown icon and her semblance seems very mystical and overpowered compared to others - which is something a relic would likely have if in human form

I like this theory and it does sound interesting, but I feel like Glynda is more of a guardian of the Relic? It's a theory Rozanime came up with on their tumblr. She can't technically be the summer maiden, because the maidens each are supposedly under the protection of each of the four kingdoms' huntsman academies. Fall for Beacon in Vale, Spring for Haven in Mistral, Winter for Atlas Academy in the kingdom of Atlas, which would mean the Summer Maiden is in Vacuo under the protection and supervision of Shade Academy.

I was the same, I loved the theory but thought it was a bit crazy. However, the more I thought about it the more I started to think it could be the case. I agree that her crown, her position at Beacon and her personality traits are all too much to be a coincidence and at the VERY LEAST, feel she is closely tied to whatever it was Ozpin meant by making the relic at Beacon more difficult to access. Some things I disagree on would be her storms and such from ep 1. I think that was just high level Dust Mage abilities on display (and this was before the maidens were a thing). Also, I don't think she ever had a relationship with James, that just seems like one sided (and shallow) interest. Otherwise, I feel that the Relic of Choice has the ability to choose...and that would makes sense that it have a human/spirit form. She can choose how she appears/ages/aligns etc. And so would not require Ozpin's magic to stay the way she is...but it still confuses why Ozpin's magic is dwindling. And of course, what Ozpin meant by making Choice harder to find...still I love the theory and have been thinking about it for a long time. Otherwise, is it just my crazy, or do you not see motifs of both the Gods in her design. She has features consistent with 'light', even her name translates to "holy', 'fair', 'good', but her purple/black tattered cape, the black leather and maybe even her crop seem more reminiscent of the God of Darkness. She's 50% Good and 50% witch xD. May not mean anything, but I see it as an opportunity to again link humanity with light and dark and their ability to choose. I have to wonder if the Crown references the Golden Cap from the WoZ books. In the book Glinda used it to send Dorothy's friends to various locations they wanted to be and set the winged monkeys free. Maybe it has something to do with freedom of choice? It seems King Vale could not simply choose to end the war with Choice, he also needed Destruction...but maybe Choice helps align the circumstances so that the user's choices can become reality if there is enough of a will/means to make them so? IDK, I have spent too much time thinking about this, but I do love the theory.

It's a wild one but sorry. I gotta call this a crack theory. I'm certain the actual vault is in the Emerald Forest. Glynda is certainly powerful. But lets be real. She has a soul. She has aura and a semblance. While the skills she displayed in the first episode are suspect and something I've thought over a lot. Its been said she keeps dust in her whip which she likely manipulates and has fine control over with her semblance. The purple rays she fires likely being focused gravity dust. Ruby even posed the question specifically of if Ozpin has done what he did to Qrow and Raven with someone else like Glynda and he said as much as he would like to. No he didn't because of of his finite magic. His magic is likely dwindling because he gave up so much of it to the maidens. His magic likely keeps them strong since the majority is there and he has so little left to work with. The fact The king of vale had the relic of choice in the battle shows he used it on people. Possibly using it on the other rulers so they would submit to his will or to make those he faced lose any will to fight by giving them the choice after displaying his power. Choice likely influences the actions of others. Remember that in Qrow's story. The aspect of Choice was based on the idea of being good or evil. It influences. Similarly to how Salem was overwhelmed by the feeling of destruction after her plunge. Pools of destruction that ironically create life to destroy merely influenced her thinking in a small degree and later she immersed herself into it and the Grimm. Devoting most of her own magic to the creation of the Grimm. The magic they possess in it's purest form controls the elements. Hence why this is the most basic power of a maiden. But they can do so much more once they understand this. Glynda who knows magic is real and has prioritized control of her semblance. Likely awakening such a semblance in some desperate bid for control within her life. She is one who is truly strong. But has every bit the limit of humanity. She stands by Ozpin's side by her own choice. She may control the body with her semblance. But she has no impact on the soul.

This reminds me of some of Glynda's remarks and comments to characters she interacts with. Ok so looking at the relics I had a thought. What if, when the four relics are united and the gods return to Remnant, and if they judge humanity as worthy, the gods will choose a worthy candidate and make them a king/queen? We have a crown that if you're right is also an advisor. The lamp would also provide insight on how to rule. Using this knowledge, the king can wield the staff to help grow his people or the sword to defend them. (kind of a crack theory I know).

Your theory makes alot of sense. In addition, to understand who or what Glynda represents, you may want to look further into her role in the "The Wizard of Oz." Thought she is considered a witch the story, she is also called a sorceress at some point. It alludes to her being good or even wicked at some point. In the story it is almost mentioned that she has feelings in regards to how things should be (good or evil) or how they should not be changed. It feeds into the idea of choice, being able to choose good or evil or change your nature.

If the choice relic is an object, maybe it can split a persons perception into multiple viewpoints, like the ability to break down any preconceived notions they might have? For example, if Ironwood came into contact with it, the relic could let him Matrix into his own mind and his psyche would split into various "facets" such as empathy, pride, fear, happiness, conviction, anger and the like in addition to his to his normal self. They'd all be able to converse with one another with the relic power ensuring all of these facets speak their respective "minds", leading to self-revelations or choices that Ironwood wouldn't have had or made before?

My opinion: Lamp: nothing to say, we know 90% about it. Staff: Lindsay (Yangs VA) joked on a podcast that it can bring people back to life, and that they should bring Forrest back. If this is true, then we’re looking at either Pyrrha or Summer. Sword: I honestly have no opinion on the sword yet, we need to see more about it. Crown: I think the crown will show the user the best choice of action. Example: Pyrrha had a choice of going to fight Cinder, or fleeing. The crown would tell her what the best choice would be and the user would have the choice of doing the two options. Example only, not saying it’s true. And also, if Pyrrha is alive again at the end of the show, the magicless crown would make for a great new headpiece. Again not true, but a theory.

Interresting theory. If I may. Glynda was unsure once though (as far my knowlegde goes), cause all the way back to volume 1. When Pyrrha paired up with Jaune, Glynda was not sure if Jaune was up to the task for the level off combat. She was right at that point, cause Jaune got in by fraud. Yet, except Cardin blackmailing Jaune for a couple off episodes, we have not seen Jaune come clean about this. Then again (at the time) Ozpin didn't agree with Glynda, Ozpin was silent during that exchange of words, so I guess Glynda took that as a sign to wait for a while longer. I wonder with Oscar's memories that came back, hopefully something about the relation between Jaune and Ozpin (maybe through his ancestors and Ozpin recognized Jaune's sword, since it was a hand-down). Also if Glynda would be a relic or the manifestation off the relic, what are Port and Oobleck? I'm wondering cause this also happend in volume 1, where Weiss recommended herself as the leader off team Rwby. Where Peter Port was agains that idea, because Ozpin knows best who would be the leader and Professor Port stated "That he believed in professor Ozpin for many years and never once let him astray". This does give me the impression that he trust Ozpin just as much as Glynda would. Lastly I'm glad Weiss got that conversation with professor Port, this made her open up to Ruby and the others more, that basicly was the start off her changing to the woman she is now, where she values her team like family.

When you said about Glynda being an intermediary, it reminded me of how in the fairytale about the crown there’s a woman who takes the crown from the king to keep him from going mad over all the choices he could make. We see Glynda speaking her mind to Ozpin like an advisor, as well as literally playing a support role in that we predominantly see her use her semblance for fixing things instead of fighting. Maybe she plays a role like that for Ozpin, taking care of things and keeping the burden of choice away from him while still advising him based on it. My thought also is, if Glynda is the spirit of the relic, maybe Glynda as we know her will have to “die” in order to use the relic - will revert back to her true spirit form and disappear. That would be interesting choice for Glynda herself to make, especially if she started out as a regular human who chose to become the vessel for the relic of Choice.

This is an interesting theory, and you make a compelling case. But I’m going to play devils advocate for a moment, as well as to theorize a bit on my own First there is a fairytale in the stores of remnant that suggests at the relic of choices power. Specifically it helps a person see a choice they will face in the future, before they have to decide. Basically giving them time to consider their options. The king in the story is haunted by this knowledge before eventually accepting that he has to live in the moment, and he can only do what he can. Based on that story I think it’s more likely that style of power instead of a guide that imparts wisdom. After all the act of imparting wisdom inevitable suggests an opinion, and while subtle that could easily interfere with the free will aspect of choice. Glenda is a fair teacher, but she isn’t unbiased. She is a rounded character with her own opinions, and she isn’t afraid to share them. Second, there are some conversations where she directly says she is less experienced than others, such as when she tells Ironwood he (Ozpin) has experience they simply lack, and that he should stop talking about trust and start showing it. I also suspect the crown on the King of vale is the relic much like the sword is. If we believe that the King was a version of Ozma, it follows that he might have both. After all he built the academies with the intent to guard them. You don’t make defences for a treasure you don’t have. I think he had it but that like everything it’s first a physical object, and secondly some sort of being. This being said I do think there is more going on with Glenda than an ordinary huntress, and it wouldn’t surprise me if she guards the relic of choice, or has magic of her own that we don’t yet know about. In the first fight we see her she displays more powers than simple telekinesis. If she was simply moving objects she would have to wait till those objects where broken to make the lance she used against the ship. Also she reforms the objects together leaving them basically unbroken, telekinesis could put them together but it wouldnt glue them in place to create a seamless connection. Finally she is based on a witch (literally the good witch). The two other characters based on either witches or wizards both ended up having true magic, this may very well be a pattern. Furthermore the exact witch she is, and it’s legend makes her the exact opposite of Salem (wicked witch of the west). Her legend ties her as firmly to the story of the wicked witch as she is tied to the story of Oz. It could be her backstory that led to her being Ozs second, or the nature of her powers, but in some way those two are directly connected. All of this together speaks more to me of magic as opposed to choice. Perhaps she is a maiden (though I doubt it considering Cinder didn’t recognize it, and her eyes don’t do the thing) or perhaps she is a fairytale we have yet to hear, much like how silver eyed warriors didn’t come up till several episodes after the lore drop of the maidens. The fact is we don’t know what Glenda is, and while I don’t think she is the relic of choice as you hypothesized, I do agree that she is more important than we realize. This is not the end of her story, and I can’t wait to here what theories you will come up with as it slowly starts to unfold.

To kind of expand on your theory, and to fit in with the fact that the relics to contrast with each other. What if the Relic of choice can show you three separate outcomes in the future based on the choices of the person wearing it. That could explain how the king of Vale was able to end the war since he had both the relic of Destruction and choice. This could also still work with whole idea of the spirit being a guide of some sorts as well, much like the spirit of knowledge will guide you by showing you the past and the mistakes made by others, the spirit of choice will guide you by showing you either a bright or bleak future of which you must choose what path you would like to walk.

You also have the moment during vol 2 chpt 1 with the food fight where Glynda was like “they are supposed to be the future protecters” or something like that, and Oz was like “that is true but for now they are kids so let them be since they won’t be forever” (more or less) it’s like Oz was teaching Glynda that just bc they chose this path doesn’t mean they still can’t behave like the kids that they are... idk this part just popped into my head towards the end of the video that would help support your theory
