One thing I like about it is how they write the adult characters. Whenever Oobleck, Port, or Ozpin are talking directly to the students, you really get a sense of all that they've been through and how they are trying to nurture their students into future huntsmen.

Great reaction! :) Btw...about the Grimm...there are some RWBY episodes that are like a mini-series called World of Remnant that gives some backstory and information about the world of the show. There are four episodes for Volume 2: Dust, Kingdoms, Grimm and Aura (this last one was released on the DVD and Blu-Ray). I would recommend watching them as well.

Rwby is very good at hiding how dark it actually is.
@kevinmackey31668 жыл бұрын
I think it follows in the tradition of things like Naruto and Harry Potter, which start out seeming like they're for kids but raise the stakes and get more serious as they go along.

Anyone else just start cracking up when he said this is the darkest rwby has ever been?
@MyFeuerFrey9 жыл бұрын
+ithpally Well he is not wrong. While RWBY always had a darker tone behind it(since the very first episode), its easy to forget what kind of the world they live in when they are within the safety of their kingdom and having hijinks like prom dances and food fights. I would not say it got "darker" here. More like, the characters got exposed more to the world beyond their childhood. Its true even for the real world - as we mature, the world that seemed bright and colorful gets a lot more scary for us.
@ithpally9 жыл бұрын
Harry Dresden I meant it more as its funny because he has no idea what is to come.

I think the main aspect on why this is darker is because we are seeing the world through the eyes of those four main characters and as the show established, they are VERY much oblivious to the things behind the scenes and the world. So as the show opens up to show more of that world beyond highschool life and safety of the kingdom to them, the tone looks darker. So yeah we get more worldbuilding exploring how the world looks outside the areas and towns protected by the huntsmen. As World of Remnant videos state, m ost of long standing cities and towns have the benefit of advantageous terrain and natural barriers, thus defending them is easier, while any villages or towns outside of those zones get quickly overrun by Grimm. Mountain Glenn was essentially Kingdom of Vale's try to expand, hoping that the mountain and the cave structure could be used to hold off against Grimm. Sadly, as it is said by Oobleck, the said expansion ended up a failure, reducing Mountain Glenn to the same tragic decaying ruins like majority of the world beyond the kingdom's defense. We also get in-show acknowledgement that Grimm are drawn and attracted by negative emotions. Which also helps to explain why all the way back in the forest in season 1, that ursa went after Cardin instead of Jaune or Cardin's team. We also are introduced to a new type of grimm - *Goliath*. These grimm lived for hundreds of years if not more and evolved to the point of having some form of intelligence. Unlike younger and weaker grimm who go after any source of negative emotion, these ones actually showcase restraint. They are waiting. Patiently waiting for humans to slip up I guess. They see no reason to attack randomly and risk losing their own lives, so they wait. Grimm don't need to feed. They don't die of old age. So they can wait for centuries. Humanity can hold out for hundreds of years but eventually they are bound to do something that these smarter grimm could perceive as an opening. And that is what is so terrifying about this prospect. In the end we see Oobleck evaluate the team members, as he picks upon Yang's "see pro huntsman in action" line as a sign that they are not exactly all-in into it. So he interviews the team members to discover their motivations. We learn that Yang is in solely for adrenaline and adventure. Weiss sees it as a duty and expectation of her family name and Blake - as a way to do something right in the world. Sadly, Oobleck does not seem to be quite satisfied with the answers going by his reaction after each of them. We can see that they are not exactly sure of WHAT or why they want to do. Ruby, surprisingly is never asked about that, which I guess it not so surprising since we did not exactly see Ruby hesitate so far, unlike with the others. Yang has problems with her mother, Blake with her past, Weiss with her family legacy and abusive childhood. Ruby does not seem to do that. Ever since the day her mother Summer died she was on this path for better or for worse. The episode ends with uncertainty for the future. Weiss, Yang and Blake are left pondering the meaning of Oobleck's questions. Even Ruby's "it will be better tomorrow" is kind of foreboding for anyone who knows their tropes.

Shayne McConnell That's actually sort of accurate - the main aspect of defense that lovecraft's characters have are their ignorance. Humans are safe because they don't bother to think what is outside their boxes that they live in. In same way our perception and the perception of main characters in RWBY is limited to the safe and happy parts of the world they live in. The moment we and they are exposed to things beyond that, that world looks a whole lot less safe.

Just a suggestion, if you haven't already, you should check out the World of Remnant videos. They explain more about the world of RWBY and its lore, Grimm included. I think it's best to watch them as they are placed on Rooster Teeth's RWBY playlist.

This episode and the next were aimed to giving you an understanding of the other three members of team RWBY. We already know why Ruby is doing what she is doing. She told Ozpin, and later she told everyone before they became a team. Side note, I know i said this before, But you would love the world of remnant videos. The Grim, Dust, Kingdoms, and Aura are the most important.

I highly suggest watching all of the Volume 2 World Of Remnant videos when you get a chance. Especially before getting to Volume 3. It will give you a better idea about how things work in the world they live in. They really are like mini history lessons. They tend to be only a few minutes long too so they are quick to watch. It can give you more light to the characters with how everything works. The world building in RWBY is truly phenomenal if you take the time to learn and figure it all out haha. Loved the reaction by the way. Also once again your comments are getting spoiler-y with lots of people hinting and trying to be subtle when they aren't so be careful reading things!

+Shadow Angel the first was very rudimentary. The second was cleaned up quite a bit, but still clunky. The third was pretty damn great. The only thing that could stop the fourth attempt from being incredible, would be him getting hired by RT or another company. Watched back-to-back, they show an incredible amount of improvement.
