andy torres As in, to change it, like it never happened. That's what Retcon means. Officially changing something that was considered official before. For example, the Star Wars Expanded Universe, which was considered canon (or apart of the overall story in one way or another), was retconned (changed) with the releases of new Star Wars films, to now make them non-canon (no longer apart of the story). [There are a lot better examples of that, but that's what I could think of offhand.

[If anyone's interested] I think I just figured out the reason why the last two openings feel so different from the first three. It's because of the attitude towards the composition style altogether. The first three openings had a slow build up to a med-fast tempo rock song with variations in said tempo throughout, who's lyrics were more all encompassing of the feel of the world of Remnant, and musically ended on notes that felt like it could be the end of the song as opposed to a cut-off-fade-out. The two newer OPs don't have that buildup, but rather start off med-fast tempo, and keep that tempo for the majority of the song, though keeping the rock music style, but toning it down, adding more soft sounds in the mix, and lyrically focus on more independent emotions of certain characters within the world, which makes the composition much more similar to the series' battle themes, as opposed to the recipe of the prior openings. It's not inherently worse, it just creates a divide in the feelings conveyed by the songs, and hence, puts off a lot of people who are expecting something entirely different from a new opening. Just feel like sharing.

That's a pretty good reason for why (i think) some of the FNDM was so thrown off by the openings. You're right, while Vol 1-3 openings started and ended like a full song, Vol 5's intro is kinda abrupt with how it starts. I can imagine some intensely dramatic scene, then people getting jumpscared over how intensely loud the intro starts off. That'd be pretty funny actually... if the intro played after a random cutscene like most animes... Nevermind.
