I’ve been a Ry Cooder fan for 60 years. One of the all time greats and he’s still going.

Ry Cooder, a musical gem. I believe he mentioned in an interview one time that his Jazz album was his least favorite, I don't recall why he felt that way. I've enjoyed it for decades. Thanks for posting this brilliant show

Thank you! I live in the UK and in the early 90s I persuaded the producer of the programme to send me a videotape. I think he was delighted to be asked. Even better it was converted from NTSC to PAL! The twist was I had it reconverted to NTSC and gave to Ry’s dad, Bill. He’d never seen it. The videotape is no more, so this is great! Thanks again 😊

Thank you Charlie for the stunning story!

Thanks, never seen this before! That looks like the Martin D45, Ry says was only good for playing slide with. 🤣 Also the homemade bottleneck from a Mateus wine bottle…it was green glass.

This is just delightful! I know that Ry kind of badmouthed the "Jazz" album and even went so far to say he was sorry he made it. But I've always thought it was great and seeing this made me appreciate it even more. What a tour de force. Thanks very much for posting.

Like others I will never understand why Ry was so disappointed with Jazz. Maybe it wasn’t where he wanted to be musically at the time?? But my goodness, he still managed to create some heaven for us all

Thank you very much ! It's wonderful and thank you for subtitles and the good presentation below the video.

Thank you Francoise. It's been a pleasure for me to work on this video. Ry Cooder is a living encyclopedia of music. I spent a lot of time in adding the subs, but it's worth I think.

Thank you for posting this. I didn’t get to see Ry perform until the 1980s, but really enjoy this performance, as well as the Jazz album.

Ry's Jazz album was always one of my favorites. And yet he says it was a failure and he regrets doing it. Why, I just don't know...

Unfortunately, it is not the complete broadcast. It is missing the set from The Golden Gate Quartet (but they did not use that name instead being introduced as "Bill Johnson, Pico Payne, Cliff Givens, and Jimmy Adams"). It included "Jezebel," "Shine" (backing vocals), "There is No Restricted Signs in Heaven," "Wade In The Water," and "Shadrach, Meshach and Adednego." I have no idea why their contribution was not included in this KZbin video (the previous version that I don't think is available had the same omissions). Maybe copyright issues? Maybe political correctness? (And, yes, I "saved" the original show onto a VHS tape off the air but I lost it, unfortunately, but I still have an audio tape version.) BTW, Ry is wrong here about "Maria Elena." It is not a "Tin Pan Alley South American dance tune." Yes, Buck Johnson played it in what seems to me like a danceable Dixieland version (kzbin.info/www/bejne/eqixm4mAeryNnrM). Instead, it was a love song composed in 1932 in Mexico by Lorenzo Barcelata and first released by Pedro Vargas in 1933. Yes, it was totally re-interpreted by Johnson but it is still recognizable from the Pedro Vargas version (FWIW, I heard it as a kid by other interpreters): kzbin.info/www/bejne/r3fTmpZrerFmqqs
