Ry is great and has been so for a very long time. I will never forget his jamming with some of us at Reed College in 1967, when he attended college there for a year. Playing with Ry makes you feel like someone has attached strings to your fingers when you play and is gently guiding you and lifting you up, infusing you with energy, bringing you inside the music. He is a phenomenon. I only wish that before I die I could play music with him just one more time.

I'm born and spent all of my 61 yrs in Croatia, Europe. Cooder became my absolutely the best musician, guitarist, character at my high school period. He has that...something. And his constant need not to be in front. He's The One in music to me. My point of all this: I've been a very good friend with a woman from Dallas, TX. And when we discuss music, she always wonders how she has never heared of Ry Cooder. That was. at first a great surprise to me even more. But, this will probably explain it all: just last week, she said she had a great time at Garret Strait concert in TX. Nashville singers like Garret are her thing. Nuff said.
@stevehatchett6636Ай бұрын
yeah, people need to expand their musical hozizon's....they settle for CW or what passes for CW these days 'cuz their friends like it. If she (thinks) likes CW take back a few years and turn her on to some Waylon Jennings!

In 1972 I had a late night gig at a college radio station. Labels would send comp albums and I was on the look out for anything other than the classical pieces I was supposed to play. It was my first chance to behave and do the playlist as instructed. I failed at that chance and got listeners calling from over 100 miles wanting to know who that guy was that I was playing. Somehow his first album just connected. 10 pm to 2 am 5 nights a week, Ry let us all into his view of music. We were all addicted. This went on for about a year. I was lucky. I got on board early. So glad to see people still discovering.

This man had such an influence on my dad who played in bands when he was younger, one of his old bands, who he still is old friends with made it quite big on the blues scene. I can see where my dad got his playing style from. I just bought him a Ry Cooder chicken skin music t-shirt for his birthday and he turned up today wearing it. I felt so proud that he's never changed his style in my whole life. I can't imagine him in anything other than what he wears. My friends used to take the piss out of me for it as a teenager but with the benefit of hindsight I now see he was just way cooler than their dads and I regret horribly not letting him teach me to play guitar. I'd do anything for that now or even just him to play something slow by Clapton and me sing. It's not gonna happen but it's a lovely dream of mine

@@chrisweir2544 I've floated the idea with him a couple of times, he's got reynauds syndrome now so he wouldn't be able to teach me but he could play a little bit I suppose and I could sing. I'm really hoping this year he'll come to ours for Christmas and I think I'll ask him to bring one of his guitars with him. Maybe one acoustic for me to sing to and an electric one for him to play how he likes to

I was at a show Buckwheat did for a corporation in New Orleans in May 2001, the company rented the aquarium for the night and had a great meal. The band played right in the middle of place outside. The concert went on for over an hour, it was amazing. I had heard Buckwheat on the radio and saw him on TV but they did rock and roll, and anything else you can name. The guitarist for the band was as good as it gets and all the band was. Never was at a concert like that, there was no barrier between the band and the people, they were as good as any live band anywhere. RIP peace indeed, he made a lot of fans that night there were a bunch of people, free food, booze music. I don't know what it cost to put on the whole thing but it must have been mind blowing.
